Tera is enjoying herself in her past-work years and recalls days when she took boats rides with other participants in CAP’s elderly program and CAP founder Reverend Ralph Beiting. “I was afraid of water, but I told my daughter one day that I was going. Louise didn’t want me to go, but I did, and we had a bushel of fun.”

I have loved the Appalachian people and mountains from the time when I was growing up and my par­ ents always somehow found the money for at least a weekend, or sometimes an entire week, in the moun­ tains of Western North Carolina and East Tennessee.

I always have the feeling there of being in God’s country. Now that I have found Christian Appalachian Project, I can finally be a real part of an area I love with all my heart. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are right there with you everyday. God bless.

I can relate to pumping water by hand and going to the outside “privy”... seeing the stars/moon shine through the cracks. As a boy growing up in an alcohol abusive home, the only friend I had was my dog... I still remember the long walks we had in the fields and woods. After serving in the USMC, I married, became a Christian and raised my family in a loving home. God bless CAP! I try to donate each month.

From comdogs to elephant ears, from hand-crafted clothing to displays featuring baby chicks hatching, you could find just about everything at the Kentucky State Fair — even the Christian Appalachian Project.

CAP employees and volunteers distributed information packets about CAP’s various programs and answered any questions State Fair goers may have had. Information included in the packets consisted of audio books, brochures, hand fans, ways to volunteer, a ruler, and CAP’s 2009 calendar, which features pictures of Appalachia taken by volunteers and CAP employees.

Visitors could watch a CAP informational video and also register for a chance to win a subscription to The Mountain Spirit and the book Mountain Images.

Rainbow Respite Center Celebrates 20 Years W ith Open House On July 25,2008, the Rainbow Respite Center, in Mt. Vernon, Kentucky, celebrated 20 years of provid­ ing relief for adults with developmental disabilities, as well as those who care for them, by hosting an open house.

Partici­ pants, staff members and program managers were full of smiles and enjoyed S ta f f m em ber a n d respite p a rticip a n t sh a re stories a festive, homestyle at­ mosphere as they watched home videos, ate lunch and socialized. Parents of participants were there as well thanking CAP workers and volunteers.

Fellowship and good times were had by all who at­ tended the afternoon event.

CAP’s Rainbow Respite Center, located on Beiting Lane off of Wilderness Road in Mount Vernon, opened in July of 1988.

Since that time, hundreds of residents from Rock­ castle and surround­ ing counties have been cared for at the center.

CAP’s professional and volunteer staff provides P articipan ts a n d s ta ff enjoy a competent, loving at­ fe s tiv e atm osph ere tention to those in their care for one or two week periods so that the primary caregiver can attend to their own needs.
