Operation Sharing is continually looking for corporate donors to help in its ministry of “Delivering Hope” to those in need throughout the Appalachian region.

Volunteer Provides Serenity Through Service It’s fair to say that CAP’S child development centers are anything but quiet and serene. From shrieks of happiness during playtime to the clank­ ing of forks during lunch to singing during group time, there is always lots of sound and wound-up energy. Sometimes a calm presence is a rare luxury.

Cara Sukolsky, a volunteer in CAP’S Family Life Child Development Center, has provided just such a treat for the staff and children. “She’s added a lot of calmness,” manager Sarah Dixon says gratefully, adding, “The kids love her.”

Cara is a repeat volunteer, having previously served in CAP’SAdult Education program. Upon her return from her home state of Pennsylvania, she began her work at the child development center, her first time working with young children.

C l a u d e D a v id C o m e s t o C A P Lancaster - In October 1984, Women’s Day magazine, in association with Garden Kane Advertising Agency, sponsored a “giveaway” of 1000 Cabbage Patch Dolls. The dolls were to be given to a charity chosen by the drawn winners. The Miner family, of Braidwood, IL. was one of the selected winners. The Miners had entered the contest, hoping to be able to direct their prize to the Christian Appalachian Project. In November, the dolls arrived at CAP. Mrs. Miner recalls that, “Afterwards, I regret doing it. I remember seeing all of the terrible things that people were doing to get these things (dolls). There was even a woman pushed through a showcase window while trying to get one. However, Claude David, (Cabbage Patch name) arrived at CAP, and the Miners agreed for the doll to be raffled with the proceeds going to help fund CAP’s Seed Program.

The Appalachian Communities for Children, a community organization in Jackson County, will be raffling off Claude David this spring. The Miners who had “just wanted to make some child happy,” will be feeding many hun­ gry people through their donation of Claude David.

ain was forecasted for Memorial Day week­ end 2004, but Owen and Betsy Wright closed the windows and went on with their plans to visit family. When they returned to their home on Abbott Creek in Floyd County, though, storm clouds had gathered and the rain had started.

“They were talking about rain and tornadoes on TV, and the weather people kept breaking in and breaking in until finally it was all weather, all the time,” Owen recalls. “At one point they starting naming towns and roads in the tornado’s path, and when we heard a place that’s just about a mile from here, that’s when we decided to take

a flood. “It was like somebody turned a spigot on,” Owen said.

“Later we heard that we got four to five inches of rain in about 30 minutes.”

Roads in front and behind the Wright’s home were flooded, making escape impossible. “Be­ fore the water came up, I got our dog and my daughter’s pet rab­ bit into the house, and turned the power off.”

From the second floor of the house, the family watched the wa­ ter eventually reach the third step of the staircase, nearly two feet deep in the house. “We could see outbuildings and vehicles “whizzing” past the windows,” Owen said.

“To this day, there are things we can’t find, and we don’t know if we lost it in the flood or had to throw it away or just misplaced it.”

To be suddenly in the position of needing assis­ tance after 15 years of being a ser­ vice provider has given Owen a new perspective.

Owen shares that “We were lucky that nobody was hurt; this has made me understand what’s really important.”

CAP VOLUNTEERS REACH OUT D U R IN G TIME OF DISASTER When CAP volunteers first arrive in Appalachia, they have a pretty good idea in which program they will serve. Some are placed in one of our Child & Family Development Centers to help nurture young minds. Oth­ ers are drawn to Outreach Services, assisting needy families in helping themselves. Some feel called to serve in one of our Respite Centers. Whatever the need, CAP is blessed in that we always receives willing hearts and able bodies, ready for any task put in front of them.

For several volunteers recently serving long-term commitments, their willingness to serve was truly put to the test during the flooding of eastern Kentucky on Memorial Day weekend of 2004. This catastrophic flood prompted many volunteers to temporarily leave their service programs in order to alleviate some of the chaos and heartache that continues even to today.

The flooding that began on Sunday, May 30, 2004 was unlike any in the region of eastern Kentucky had ever seen. Many residents escaped with only the clothes they were wearing, only to look back and watch helplessly as their homes were ravaged by quickly-rising waters. Many people throughout CAP’s service area lost homes, 20

vehicles, and precious personal items that can never be replaced. The needs of these residents had to be ad­ dressed immediately, including things as basic as trash bags and cleaning supplies, and as complex as ensur­ ing sanitary living conditions and completely rebuild­ ing homes.

Immediately, a need sprang up for volunteers to as­ sist in so many ways. CAP volunteers devoted several weeks of their time to helping any way they could, from helping with mud outs to working at distribution centers, handing out basic living necessities. “Our vol­ unteers really got involved,” said Harold Underwood, one of CAP’s Managers of Volunteer Life, “They were super.”

Many CAP employees unofficially became short­ term volunteers as well, pitching in with any needed task, from coordinating delivery of supplies to helping hand out necessities to distraught families. Whether they were classified as employees or volunteers, so many members of CAP’s family gave of themselves for weeks, until the initial emergencies subsided.

Today, CAP’s volunteers and employees continue to help the people of Appalachia as they strive to not only recover from a devastating natural disaster, but also to come out on the other side stronger, more de­ termined and better able to help themselves and others in the future.

As CAP employees and volunteers continue to reach those in need in Appalachia, pray for our work and those we serve.

Dissolve the yeast in the water. Put the 2 1/2 cups biscuit mix in a large bowl; stir in the sugar. Add the yeast mixture, stirring vigorously. Sprinkle the work surface generously with the remaining 1/2 to 1 cup biscuit mix.
