CAP will end its fiscal year in August. Looking back at this year, CAP as an organiza­ tion has been very blessed.

Our blessings have allowed us to reach out in many ways to the people we serve over this past year.

Flooding, this past year in Eastern Kentucky, was the worst in thirty years. Many people lost their homes and their possessions.

We were there from the beginning. We were able to give food, cleaning supplies, water, blankets and many other much needed items.

Recovery efforts will take a long time, for some, years to build back what they lost. We will continue to help all we can.

As we promised, this issue o f The Mountain Spirit is dedicated to our forty years in the mountains. It is a tribute to all o f those who helped us touch the lives o f many through the forty years.

We are looking forward to the next forty years and would like to take this opportunity to thank all o f you who helped grow this great ministry. We live in the most giving nation in the world and I do believe that CAP has some o f the best donors in this nation.

The beginning of the school year in rural Appalachia triggers many emotions in students preparing for the ‘first day’ back to school.

O ctober 1964 also m arks the date o f the incorpo­ ration o f the Christian A ppalachian Project. W hat started as a dream o f a young Catholic priest and the

people who began to dream along w ith him has grown into the largest service organization in Eastern Kentucky, serving thousands o f people through dozens o f program s and over a m illion indirectly.

To exam ine C A P ’s forty years in the m ountains is to begin w ith the m inistry o f its founder, Father R alph Beiting, who was assigned to w ork in the Eastern K entucky portion o f the D iocese o f C ovington in 1950 only one year after his ordination.

A lthough he w as a native o f N orthern Kentucky, an assignm ent to w ork in A ppalachia w hen he was a sem inarian m arked Father Beiting with a love for the m ountains and her people.

Father B eiting knew that the counties to w hich he had been assigned were m arked by a high poverty rate, but very few Catholics.

W hen he is in a jovial m ood, Father B eiting says that to care ju st for the Catholics in the area w ould have left him w ith a lot o f tim e on his hands. In m ore serious m om ents, though, he says that as a sem inarian, he learned that all people, not just

Catholic people, were his respon­ sibility and the people who were under his care had physical as well as spiritual needs.

Helping children to dream and visualize themselves in a life free of poverty was the starting point for Father Beiting. In 1957, he and his associate, Father Herman Kamlage, pooled their small stipends and bought land on Herrington Lake in Garrard County, KY, to start a summer camp. During the days, children enjoyed water activities and sports; in the evenings they sat around a campfire and were encouraged by Father Beiting and other camp counselors to

make big plans for their lives. In the meantime, parents of campers were asking Father Beiting to help them find jobs.

CAP grew out of the initial relationships established at Cliffview Lodge, as the original camp was named. Father Beiting, with the permis­ sion of Bishop William Mulloy, bishop of the diocese of Covington, established CAP as an entity separate from the Catholic Church, an organiza­ tion to “help people help themselves,” a motto that remains to this day.

Father Beiting addressed that need for jobs by beginning such enterprises as a dairy farm, a woodworking shop and a greenhouse. Although the businesses were not designed to create a great number of jobs, each made a small, but significant impact on the local economy. For example, the dairy farm (started with six Holsteins

donated by the Abbey of Gethsemane and a borrowed bull) was operated by George Purcell, native of Garrard County and one of CAP’s first volunteers. Several years after it was established, George purchased the business and continued its operation, providing an economic boost for Jackson County, one of the poorest counties in the state at that time.

Human Services Become the Key Despite the success of these

businesses, in the early 1970s, CAP workers realized several steps were needed before healthy economic growth - or even self-

clothing - have been available to people in need throughout CAP’s forty years in the moun­ tains. Although such relief might seem like a short-term solution to a long-term problem, families are also given the opportunity to analyze their financial situations and determine strategies to make the kinds of changes needed to improve the quality of life.

Services to elderly people are another activity that has been a part of CAP since its day of incorporation. Frequently the economics of the area force young people to move away in order to find better employment opportuni­ ties. This situation leaves elderly parents with no safety net in case of illness or infirmity. The corps of volunteers in elderly services provides assistance and compan­ ionship to individuals, but one of their most important tasks is to see that elderly people have the opportunity to gather periodically for a meal or a visit with old friends. Sometimes all elderly people need is transportation, and the volunteer spends the rest of the afternoon at these gatherings listening to stories!

CAP has worked to help with substandard housing in the Appa­ lachian region for nearly 40 years, but since the mid-’90s, has shifted its focus to include new home construction in addition to repairing homes to make them safer and more

sufficiency for the region - would be possible. During these years, empha­ sis shifted to devel­ opment of human potential. Much of CAP’S emphasis continues on human services in three areas: family ser­ vices, educational services and services for people with disabilities.

Through family services, CAP deals with families in crisis, as well as those who are ready for long-term development.

When families are in crisis, CAP workers know that the need to solve immediate problems elimi­ nates a family’s ability to look to the future for long-term solutions.

Counseling has been a corner­ stone of CAP’s family life ser­ vices for over twenty years. With fees based on a sliding scale, the access to professional counselors for help with psychological problems gives families and individuals the opportunity to wrestle with problems that would be difficult to handle without professional help.

Access to counseling is one of the opportunities avail­ able to people who come to a CAP spouse abuse shelter. CAP shelters are part of a successful coalition of such pro­ grams in Kentucky, and in its years of advocacy for victims of domestic violence, CAP has helped families achieve safe, peaceful environments.

comfortable. CAP helps families and individuals investigate lowinterest, first time home loans, making the dream of homeownership viable for people who might otherwise never have that opportunity. CAP also requires “sweat equity” from its home owners, helping other families to realize their dreams, as well. CAP also maximizes its resources by cooperation with other agencies that are involved in housing programs.

Educational Attainment is Key Much of the need for long-and short-term devel­

opment programs can be traced to a lack of educational attainment for the people in the areas that CAP serves.

During the early 20th century, extractive industries such as coal mining and timbering played a major role in the jobs that were available in the central Appalachian region.

Such jobs required more strength than education, so fewer and fewer people saw the need for a good education.

However, the industry experienced a cycle of “boom” times (when demand for coal was high) and “bust” times (when demand was low), and workers had difficulties providing for families. Although many families chose to leave the area, resulting in a huge out-migration to such places as Cincinnati and Detroit, where jobs were more plentiful, others stayed and struggled through hard times.

The habit of placing little impor­ tance on educational attainment, as became prevalent during “boom” times, made “bust” times even more difficult. Christian groups saw education as a long­ term solution to problems, and such educational beacons as Berea College, Hindman Settlement School, Pine Mountain Settlement School and Alice Lloyd College worked to elevate the education levels in mountain areas.

In the 1970s, when the Christian Appalachian Project began

turning more of its attention to human services, education pro­ grams became more prevalent.

Relationships with families had been established at Cliffview Lodge, and later at Camp Andrew Jackson.

These relationships laid the foundation for the enrollment at CAP’s Berea Child Devel­ opment, the first of many such centers that are today

titled child and family develop­ ment centers, because of the crucial role that parents play as the first teacher of their children.

CAP child and family develop­ ment centers in four counties prepare children for kindergarten, and help them explore their natural curiosity and discover a love for learning that for many children lasts a lifetime. Parents are asked to volunteer in the centers. In doing so, CAP has

found that parents take a much greater awareness in the children’s education and at the same time, learn the best ways to relate to children.

CAP centers have been recognized by the state of Kentucky for excellence through the STARS for Kids Now program and through national accredita­ tion.

Since Father Beiting estab­ lished Cliffview Lodge in 1957, summertime has meant camp time for CAP. Although Cliffview Lodge is no longer a CAP camp, youngsters ages seven through 14 enjoy activi­ ties at Camp Andrew Jackson (Jackson County) and Camp Shawnee (Floyd County).

Established in the late 1960s, Camp Andrew Jackson has had kids begin visiting every summer from the time they turn seven, then work at the camp as junior counselors and counselors.

Such continuity has given the camp an outstanding reputation.

As CAP permanent volun­ teers served as camp counse­ lors, they learned of the great need for activities for middleschool and high-school students in CAP’s counties.

That need led CAP to estab­ lish two youth centers that promote positive attitudes and leadership training for adoles­ cents in mountain counties.

Education Programs also Serve Those with Disabilities Services in the mountains for people1 ith disabilities are often difficult to find. Traditionally close-knit families care for family members at home, regardless of the difficulties of assisting people with physical or mental disabili­ ties. Through in-home services, community development and

supported employment, Christian Appalachian Project Resources for Independence in Community and Employment (CAPRICE) promotes and encourages inde­ pendence, and helps persons with disabilities develop competencies through opportunities, education and mentoring.

Recognizing that families that have members with disabilities often undergo more stress than a

typical family, CAP operates programs that provide respite care. Rainbow Respite in Rockcastle County provides residential care in weeks that alternate between men, women and children, as well as care in the home or in the community. Rejoice Respite operates in CAP’s eastern section as an in-home pro­ gram.

Parents Are Teachers helps families with children with disabilities not only attain goals of learning and selfhelp, but to learn about the rights of children with dis­ abilities and to learn needed advocacy skills as well.

In 1986, CAP was given an opportunity to expand the resources for its own pro­ grams, and to lend assistance to thousands of people in all thirteen Appalachian states.

Operation Sharing started as a program that distributed a large donation of children’s books. Every year, Operation Sharing distributes millions of

dollars worth of goods that it receives from organizations and businesses to hundreds of schools, churches and grass-roots organi-

Operation Sharing uses the slogan “We Deliver Hope” to describe its work throughout the Appalachian region, and indeed, the work that is supported by Operation Sharing brings hope to over a million people each year.

Through its forty years in the mountains, the Christian Appala­ chian Project has grown in some areas; in others it has developed pro­ grams and turned them over to be continued by others in the community.

In all those years, however, the motivation for CAP’s work is the needs of the community and those motivations, support from our donors and God’s grace will see CAP through another 40 years - and beyond.

Outreach Services holds annual School Readiness distributions

It’s nearly autumn once again, and for thousands of children, the beginning of a new school year.

So begins a flurry of activity before classes even commence, otherwise known as back-toschool shopping.

For many students, this is nothing more than an after­ thought; they assume Mom or Dad will take them shopping to the nearest department store for notebooks, pencils, backpacks, and the all-important back-toschool wardrobe.

In Appalachia, this isn’t always the case. Parents often worry that they will not have the means to provide their children with even the most basic of school supplies.

Often the child begins his or her school year with the same clothes used during the previous year, or simply inherits hand-me-downs from an older sibling.

To respond to this need, Christian Appalachian Project’s Outreach Services program holds

an annual “School Readiness” event, aimed at providing lower-income families with basic school supplies for each child.

School Readiness is a muchanticipated affair for both families and CAP workers alike. Volunteers Build with Love and Generosity

Far from the world of reality television shows that promise to make over a home in a weekend or less, the Christian Appalachian Project’s Housing Program strives to bring miracles to life every single day for families in Appalachia who otherwise could not afford to fix their homes. How do they do it, you ask? Well, all of these miracles would not be possible without people who are willing to donate their time and money to a worthy cause.

Whether it is financial support, or spending a week, month, or even a year as a volunteer, all aid in making Appalachia a beautiful place to live.

Additionally, it is the faith that everyone pulls together that sets the stage for great things to happen. After all, it is Jesus who says, “Whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me”. In keeping with the spirit of lending a helping hand, CAP’s Housing Program is helping homeowners keep their homes comfortable and safe.

This summer, CAP hosted 15 groups who graciously gave a week of their summer vacations to assist CAP in helping those in great need. They helped build one new house, one emergency wheelchair ramp, and made six minor repairs.

The Week o f Their Lives

“It’s the week of their lives,” Camp Coordinator Annie Molbray says, of the 1,020 students that attended one of CAP’S summer camps: Camp Shawnee, Camp AJ, Jones Fork Day Camp, and the Weeksbury Day Camp.

Each week of camp promised a new adventure for a different group of children and the affirma­ tion that each one of them has something special to give. It was a great time for the children to bond and to just have fun.

Imagine a week full of excite­ ment where children breathe fresh mountain air, sing songs, and play games that encourage teamwork, and it doesn’t take long for one to realize the long lasting benefits that come from such an experience.

Tme, it only lasted five days for each group, but in that short amount of time campers learned about character, virtue, integrity, and the love that God has for them.

While encouraging children to learn and grow, camp counselors served as good role models by providing strong examples of faith.

When asked about what was done differ­ ently this year, Owen Wright, the Program Manager for Camp Shawnee, pointed out that the age groups were divided up differently, and a new arts and crafts room was provided to accommodate larger groups. He expressed that one unique aspect of the program is that they continue to see children

programs like ENDOW, which stands for Educating on the Nature and Dignity of Women. It is a program where counselors reach out to teen girls to talk about what it is to be a woman.

Annie Molbray conveyed to them that it is not just appearance that makes them special but that “our inherent worth is that we are treasures of God.” A similar program was held for teen boys as well, highlighting what it is to be a man and having a pure heart and mind.

The teen boys spent their week at camp with a variety of activi­ ties that included blazing the old Overlook Trail.

The teen girls week ended with a “Run for Your Life Lucy Relay,” that was very similar to the teen boys’ “Run for Your Life Charlie Brown Relay,” where teens participated in a series of events to help their team win.

At the end of the relays it was not who | won that mattered, but 'J that everyone had fun on the journey.

At the end of each week, the campers were sad to leave but happy and excited to tell their friends and families about their experiences at a camp.

Each camper left with more confidence in themselves, and the hope of returning next year to experience another new adventure.

Martin County Child and Family Development Center Graduates First Class

By Carla Davis The Martin County Child and Family Development Center gradu­ ated its first class on Friday, July 16, at the Martin County Child and Family Develop­ ment Center facility located in the Roy F. Collier Community Center in Inez.

This is the first class that has graduated from the facility since it opened last October. Since then, the center has settled into what has become a structured yet homey, kid-friendly child and family development center.

Sometimes, parents may have questions as to what the Martin County Child and Family Develop­ ment Center has to offer children.

MCCFDC provides a service to

children aged one to five years.

During the day, children are cared for in a structured and loving

environment, with plenty of educa­ tional activities to stimulate and challenge the young mind.

In the center, there are several “stations” that represent different aspects of human development, from language development to pre-math to

the development of social skills.

In the toddler department, teacherstudent ratio is 1:5; in the preschool department the teacher-student ratio is 1:11. Staff mem­ bers are trained and certified to care for and provide a safe and nurturing environment for children.

In addition, the center also offers what is known as a Parent Night one evening per month.

Parent Nights are designed to give children and parents a chance to interact at the center. The center offers crafts, classes and possibly a local speaker or two to liven up the evening.

A driana Trigiani, multi-talented author and story­ teller and award-winning documentary filmmaker, playwright, and television and screenplay writer, hails from Big Stone Gap in southwest Virginia.

When she combines her storytelling ability with the richness of closely observed details from her Appalachian upbringing, the result is an entertaining and familiar read, the “Big Stone Gap” trilogy (Big Stone Gap, Big Cherry Holler and Milk Glass Moon).

Big Stone Gap (2000, Ballentine Publishing, 308 pages) introduces us to Ave Maria Mulligan, daughter of an Italian immigrant, who is not flourishing in her native southwest Virginia community of 5,000. Oh, she’s become a productive and actually indispensable member of this little town - she’s the local pharmacist, half of the rescue squad, and director of the annual town theatrical pageant. She’s always there for any local trouble, knows everybody’s private medical details, and is on hand for civic triumphs. Wired in to details, gossip and events, she neverthe­ less stands oddly alone, feeling always somehow excluded from her community’s heart.

That Ave Maria is a “furiner” whose mother came to the Gap from Italy isn’t her real problem.

After all, the Gap successfully assimilated other outsiders including Lebanese merchant Zackie Wakin, (brought in by name from Trigiani’s real-life Gap) and attorney Lew Eisenberg.

Besides, as anyone who has lived it remembers, you can be disquali­ fied from small-town social inclusion by being bom too far down the road, never mind the next continent.

It’s not even the entire problem that at 35 Ave Maria is on the way to becoming town spinster. Her central problem is that she rightly feels out of step in a culture where women by unspoken agreement

should prefer to be married, subservient, docile, and (superfi­ cially) happy, and she is none of the above.

She can’t find a spouse because only two local men meet her criteria and she can’t get their desires in sync with hers. The rest of the men are either preoccupied, not smart enough, or already taken. And she can’t separately address the needs of body and heart, as her buddy, the casually bawdy Bookmobile broad Iva Lou Wade, can.

Still with all that might be wrong with Ave Maria’s life, she’s able to go with the flow until a fateful letter from her late mother raises an issue that Ave Maria might have to uproot her entire Appalachian life to solve. Can she give up her present identity entirely, even if she suspects it isn’t valid, merely to chase the answer to a question? Ave Maria has to decide on a course of action, and once she does, further complications challenge her ability to follow through.

During this smooth-as-chesspie read, Big Stone Gap bursts into vivid life with more contem­ porary detail than other hills-andhollers fiction (because this one is set in the late 1970s). I doubt any Appalachian fiction has ever brought on Elizabeth Taylor as a character before.

My favorites in the crowd of colorful locals are the alreadymentioned Bookmobile goodtimer Iva Lou; preening but cruel teen queen Tayloe Slagle; attorney Lew Eisenberg and his ball-andchain, Inez; handymen Otto and Worley Ottinger, who unexpect­ edly become more than comic relief; and Nan MacChesney, the wise woman of Cracker Neck Holler, dispenser of good advice

not soon enough heeded.

I found myself thinking of the more autobiographical work Creekers, set in Pike County, Ky., in which author Linda Scott DeRosier maintained that small­ town America is pretty much the same in Appalachia as anywhere else, as far as the towns go; only by going out of the town limits and way up the hollers do you find the distinctively different Appalachian culture. Perhaps recognizing this similarity, Trigiani treats her Big Stone Gap characters as relatively normal, verbally. Many of them are a little weird, but the weirdness is not from being rural. Trigiani wisely underplays the mountain dialog, only occasionally dropping a final “g” or saying the extra “done” (“what he done said.”) Personally, after a certain point thick dialects become hard to decipher and lose their effectiveness in making an Appalachian character distinctive; Trigiani finds the point of effec­ tiveness and stays with it.

Though Trigiani and Ave Maria are both Italians in Appalachia, Gap is not Trigiani’s autobiogra­ phy as Creekers is for DeRosier.

(Trigiana originally set out to write around another of the story’s important characters.) But any reader who knows the area recognizes authentic detail Trigiani observed in Big Stone Gap when she grew up there in the late sixties and the seventies.

(Trigiani now lives in New York City.)

The narrative authentically refers to the mysterious mixedrace Melungeons of southwest Virginia. The triple duty Ave Maria performs as pharmacist, rescue squad member and com­ munity theater director rings true: The talented of Appalachia must

take up multiple roles. And a character pours peanuts into a Coca-Cola and shakes it up before drinking it, which is more or less required of authentic area fiction (the writers who don’t include the shakingup are faking it).

Also authentic are ithe limited choices and life arcs endured by the female characters, too often defined exclusively by marriage and/or children.

Counter-pointing Ave Maria’s solitary quest are large-cast townlife scenes replete with gentle humor. A crucial scene is set at the “Trail of the Lonesome Pine” annual drama run by the local museum (it’s a real event). Later the town preens for Elizabeth Taylor and Senate candidate John Warner when they make a cam­ paign visit as the famous couple really did in 1978, and the real-

life derailment of this spotlight moment happens in the book as it did for real.

After reading this I now can say I know a real person in the bit-part category Father John Rausch, a priest of the Glenmary order active in the area whose mention illustrates the struggle for a Catholic presence in the mountains, and underscores another reason for the Ave Maria to feel alone. Catholics struggle for visibility in a culture that exhibits suspicion, except regard­ ing the sisters who run the local hospital, who have earned the locals’ trust at a vulnerable time.

Readers with separate memories of the southwest Virginia southeast Kentucky - northeast Tennessee part of Appalachia will recognize similar background elements that will enhance their appreciation of an already excel­ lent story with engaging charac­ ters.

In the first paragraph Ave Maria is settling in for a rainy weekend with a book and a dozen chocolate chip cookies from a ==_ local bake !JF sale, which suggests a good setting in which to read this light and friendly, but clever and engaging, tale. And if the weekends stay rainy, no problem. Trigiani’s second book, Big Cherry Holler, brings us upto-date on a married Ave Maria in the 1980s, and her experiences with motherhood and aging make up Milk Glass Moon.

olunteers serving as camp counselors at CAP’S Camp Andrew Jackson were treated to a special book signing earlier this summer, during which they got to meet and talk with Cliffie Strong, author of Strong Survival: The Life and Times of a Mountain Woman.

Strong, who is a participant in CAP’s Elderly Services program, was asked to record her life in the form of a short book. The book, which features chapters of Strong’s life alternated with chapters about CAP written by author Ike Adams, is an interesting, easy-to-read chronicle of the struggles and accomplishments of a woman who has lived a true mountain life.

While signing books for the crowd, Strong happily spoke words of wisdom to the youth­ ful group: “There ain’t a person in this room that chose to be what they are, but everybody can choose who you are...you can be anybody you want to be.”

Strong, who is approaching 89 years old, encouraged the crowd to always strive for honesty: “There comes a time when we have to leave this earth,” she said, adding, “What are you going to think of your­ selves when you go?” She said with pride, “I ’ve never had to take something from somebody to live. I’m not ashamed of how I lived because I lived it hon­ est.”

Strong is a no-nonsense, hard-working woman, as her book illustrates. She told the group stories that weren’t found in the book, however. One short anecdote underscores her resourcefulness and willingness to work, as she told of under­ pinning a house for a neighbor to earn money for her first false teeth.

CAP Provides Relief to Flood Victims

While the immediate crisis has abated, the fallout from flooding remains a major issue for victims as well as for those who are striving to help them. Some officials are estimating a timeframe of up to a year and a half to return homes and busi­ nesses to pre-flood conditions.

When asked what Carrie would

say to someone who is consider­ ing volunteering at CAP, Carrie has one very important piece of advice: pray. “Ask God and seek Him, and if this is where He wants you to be, then this is where you should be,” she affirms, adding, “My experience here has been truly holy.”
