As we are blessed with yet another spring, God has granted us a number o f areas that will experi­ ence ‘growth’ and change throughout the Christian Appala­ chian Project.

W e are looking forward to our move eastward, and embarking onto new "’frontier". Forging new paths in counties and communi­ ties in need o f our services, we continue to link with partners throughout Appalachia that have similar service agendas. As these connections are made with organizations and service projects, we realize the importance

team work’s been to building a stronger Appalachia. The basis o f our mission was founded on this principle, originating with the premise that the programs would eventually be handed back over to the community in which they originated. Our partnerships are much like returning perenni­ als along the garden path, springing forth with blossom and blooming to wonderous beauty as time unfolds.

Although w e ’ve bid farewell to some form er programs, staff and participants, we welcome the first fruits o f newly hatched services and unchartered terri­ tory, and take value in Appalachia’s natural resource its people.

Her connection to Christian Appalachian Project began with Ben Prewitt, Vice President of CAP’s Planned Giving/Major Gifts. Stella and Ben were presenters at the Christian Country Music Awards and met one another, in Stella’s words, “by divine intervention” as she had been praying about the need to connect with a charity that served the needs of Appalachia. The meeting resulted in Stella coming to CAP see what the organization is all about.

During a three day excursion, Stella traversed through over four hundred miles of CAP’s service area, meeting employees, volunteers and participants from adminstration to crisis interven­ tion, child development to in-kind dona­ tions. “The number of programs and individuals who participate in CAP is a bit overwhelming at first glance and has to be experienced first hand to really get a good feel for the magnitude of our service,” stated CAP’s Ben Prewitt.

Ms. Parton will be joining Christian Appalachian Project in a celebratory ground breaking ceremony of a new CAP facility that will house the headquarters of the organization, located in the Hagerhill area. A concert is scheduled and various events to involve the community and surrounding area, as

the structure will benefit all of Appalachia and its residents.

On a brief encounter at a CAP shelter for victims of domestic violence, Stella shared prayer and paused over countless stories with staff, participants and their children.

The arena of domestic violence and advocacy for its victims, is one Parton supports at full throttle. In addition, she is publishing a book of poetry, with the proceeds to benefit the Domestic Violence Intervention Center.

While at the shelter, one of the residents came up to Stella after she had spoken, carrying a painting.

of wildflowers. As she admired the piece, Stella then requested to purchase the work. The stunned and somewhat starstruck woman sadly turned over the painting to its back to reveal a creased bend of the cardboard canvas backing, evidence of a husband’s anger.

This revelation certainly sealed the deal.

The painting is symbolic of how a person’s influence can instill, inspire and encourage self respect. She purchased not only a painting, but a piece of the person’s heart. Perhaps a down payment was made on the woman’s self esteem, who had never ‘sold’ her artwork before that moment, or considered what she accom­ plished to have worth. The monetary value was of no importance, the emotional investment that was secured that day was priceless.

Your will can contain all the information you think you want, and not be worth the paper it’s written on. This is more likely to be true if your will is old, or if you tried to cut corners by using generic forms from a stationery store. A will can be invalid if it is unsigned or wit­ nessed improperly.

There’s just no substitute for having a competent attorney involved. In the short run, it may cost you a bit more, but it will certainly provide greater peace of mind and possibly deliver your survivors from a nightmare.

It Conflicts With Other Plans.

Your will should be coordinated with your other estate transfer documents. For example, insurance proceeds and brokerage accounts pass outside the will to the named beneficiaries. Pension funds are also distributed outside the will. A will that truly works well will take all of these other assets into consider­ ation.

It Fails to Fulfill Your Desires.

Your will should accomplish exactly what you want.

Do you want your children to receive their inheritance all at once, or at various intervals? Do you want your charitable gifts to be used for unrestricted purposes, or do you want to earmark the funds to meet specific needs? Do you want to continue to support the work of the Christian Appalachian Project and give a percent­ age of your estate, or a set amount?

Family Life Child and Family Develop­ ment Center/Head Start in Rockcastle County Achieves A Three-Star Rating A key factor in assuring a strong community is to under­ stand that it begins with children.

Quality child care is a crucial building block in achieving this goal and The Christian Appala­ chian Project’s Family Life Child and Family Development Center/ Head Start in Rockcastle County has always been mindful to provide this service. Currently, the center is participating in a program that strives to meet high quality standards in the service and education of children.

STARS for KIDS NOW is a quality rating system for child care and began statewide less than a year ago.

Family Life Child and Family Development Center/Head Start was awarded a three star rating, indicating that the program is seeking quality standards beyond the normal requirements for facility licensure. The child and family development center was graded based on good outcomes for young children which include factors such as staff to child ratios, program curriculum, staff education and training. Children who are cared for in a safe, stable and nurturing environment tend to develop effective social skills and are more likely to be well-prepared to enter school. CAP understands that in order for children to reach their full potential, they must spend time in quality settings.

“Our center has always strived to be of the highest quality for the families enrolled. To have this validated by the Kentucky Rating System for quality child care is rewarding for the staff and families and especially for the children. This is an exciting, happy place for little people to be and according to the STARS for KIDS NOW rating, they are getting high quality care on a

daily basis,” stated Sarah Dixon, Manager of Family Life Child and Family Development Center/Head Start.

The center presently provides enrollment and educational service to 44 three and four-year-olds in Rockcastle County. Another unique attribute of the center is educational resources offered to families with children from pre-natal through three-years-old.

CAP is also fortunate to have two other Family Life Child and Family Development Centers with a three star rating, Eagle Child & Family Development Center and Genisis Child & Family Development Center.

Making A Difference In An Indifferent World

Some celebrating in the home dedication ceremony of Sheila Faye Boatley included CAP Housing Staff-Brenda Thornton, Janet Glovak, Donna Thrush, Sheila Faye Boatley and her daughter, Sheila Renee Boatley.

On a bitterly cold February afternoon, Sheila Faye Boatley, Lancaster resident and single woman of 47 years of age, took on the reins and status of new home owner, through the housing program of Christian Appalachian Project.

Over twenty well wishers, family members, staff and volunteers of the Christian Appalachian Project, gathered in the sparkling new kitchen at 59 Doty Heights of Sheila Faye, to celebrate and christen her new abode.

In a dignified pose, Ms. Boatley stated, “I thank God most of all, for this home, and everyone that worked to help me. It was worth the wait.”

While ever grateful to all those responsible for assisting in the process, it was a very long journey,

nearly two years to final comple­ tion. The three bedroom home will not only provide a lovely residence for Ms. Boatley, in addition, her three grandchildren will enjoy overnight weekend visits with their grandmother.

Sheila Faye Boatley suffers from emphysema and a breathing malady called chronic obstructive pulmo­ nary disorder, which confines her to an ever present oxygen tank, that travels on a rolling cart beside her.

A warm, clean environment that her new surroundings will provide are a healthy necessity. She has been evaluated and is currently waiting for a lung transplant.

The Christian Appalachian Project’s Housing program, along with various community partner­ ships, makes a lasting mark on the

lives of the participants it serves.

The face of CAP’SHousing program has changed within the last few years. By implementing new home construction and coupling resources through financial institutions to establish affordable loans and mortgages, a number of deserving families throughout eastern Ken­ tucky are now home-owners.

In financing Sheila Faye Boatley’s home, CAP staff linked her to grant assistance from USDA, H.O.M.E. and Affordable Housing Trust Fund monies (state lottery funds).

Combining state and federal resources, equipped her with a suitable, affordable mortgage. CAP participation involved the donation of labor and construction, financial counseling and a liasion with the various institutions.

CAP Provides Relief To Aid Flood Victims PHELPS, KY. - Heavy showers and abundant spring rains developed into what has been described as one of the worst floods to hit the area in over a decade. With as many as nine people dead and others missing, President Bush declared the area a federal disaster. Swollen creeks and rivers caused by the torrential rains resulted in fast moving currents destroying homes, demolishing property and for some all was lost.

“Fortunately the floods came during the daylight hours,” said Hilman Dotson, Magistrate for the 5thDistrict in which the worst flooding occurred.

“There would have been a larger loss of life had it occurred over night.”

In answer to the crisis and extreme tradegy, the Christian Appalachian Project (CAP) is responding.

Emer­ gency supplies are being provided in an action called Operation Relief, with the non-profit service organization delivering much needed goods to people in the areas affected.

On Tuesday, May 14, semi-trailer truck rolled into and unloaded at the Phelps Intergenerational Center, with goods that will aid in household needs such as bedding, lamps, towels, dishes, flatware and various houseware items.

“We are trying to fill the gap by assess­ ing what other agencies have already deliv­ ered, and provide supplies to address needs still present.” stated Johnny Thompson, Director of Operation Sharing, CAP’S in-kind dona­ tion program.

“As this goes

on and the clean-up continues, CAP will remain a presence as the need and requests change. It will be an on-going relief effort,” continued Thompson.

While CAP is one of several

agencies vowing to help flood victims, Intergenerational center director Janis Hatfield claims that all help is important.

“You just can’t imagine how much help we’ve needed and received during this time of devastation,” she says. “It’s like every time we need help, an angel appears and help arrives.”

In addition to food and water, other means of relief are provided

by American Red Cross outreach disaster relief crews. Teams of three to four venture out to survey the damage. After which, families may apply for assistance for home repairs and to replace lost and damaged items.

Charity Begins Early For Students At St. Camillus Academy Students at the St. Camillus Academy in Lily, Kentucky recently participated in a fundraising effort that netted close to $2,000. The students, ages ranging from 3 years old to 8th grade, competed in the annual “Penny Wars”, with every grade collecting to assist local philanthropic organizations.

“I am impressed with the willing­ ness of the children to share,” stated Sister Juanita Nadicksbernd, Principal of the Saint Camillus Academy. “They’re to be com­ mended for their efforts,” continued Sister Juanita.

“The intent of the “Penny Wars” and the result provides the children with a sense of responsibilty, that they are not here alone and have a responsibility to those that are

Just a day in Appalachia, where people laugh and cry, Natives and others helping and asking, “Oh Lord, why?”

It isn’t easy in these Appalachian foothills, living day to day, Working just to eat and pay those monthly bills. CAP Programs: The Elderly, Jobstart, Housing, Respite, and Adult Ed we teach, Teen Centers, Child Development, and don’t forget Outreach.

The Clothes Attic, Spouce Abuse, Counseling, and all the summer camps.

To help secure participants it takes people, envelopes, letters, and licking all those stamps.

This Christian Appalachian Project has been going since 1964.

Begun by a Catholic priest, Father Beiting, whom we all adore.

It wasn’t easy and there is much work yet to do.

It will be much easier if there were many - not just a few.

Days in Appalachia grow into months and years.

Through experiences we have learned there is laughter, but also tears.

There are victories and defeats - Lord, we know these defeats, but with your help and direction we will never know retreats. Lord give us your wisdom, your strength and your love. Help us to know you are with us here and also up above. Help us to love unconditionally, these people we hold dear. Give us your peace, joy, hope and faith and we will know no fear.

Strong Family Ties Help Build A Home With Christian Appalachian Project’s Housing Program One of the biggest stumbling blocks for portions of eastern Kentucky and its residents are that a large percentage occupy substan­ dard housing and live in conditions that fall beneath the poverty standards most of America lives above. For the Vanover family that reside on Hummingbird Road in Martha, a community of Lawrence County, Kentucky, their surroundings have greatly improved thanks in part to the Christian Appalachian Project.

Shevella Vanover and her 13 year old son Brent, became acquainted with Christian Appalachian Project (CAP) through the RESPITE Program.

Brenda Crum, a caseworker of RESPITE, spent many hours sitting and playing with Brent who is autistic and non-verbal. In addition, CAP’S Prescription Assistance Program provided some of Brent’s medications during a period when he had no insurance coverage to pay for his medicines. Shevella contacted Outreach caseworker Tammy Caynor in the spring of 2001 asking for repairs to her mobile home. When Tammy

discovered Shevella was renting and could benefit from Housing, she referred Shevella to the Housing Program. One year later, Shevella and Brent are preparing to take up residence in their brand new home.

bird Road and they help Shevella care for Brent. Terry and Harold worked many sweat equity hours on Shevella’s home. Carol provides transportation for Shevella and she helped Shevella acquire much of the documentation needed by lenders.

“It was a blessing to everyone that had the chance to meet this family, they were wonderful to work with,” stated Delinda Huff, with CAP’S Housing Program.

Lead person Robert Moore and volunteers Jim Dalton and Jim Broader worked on the project for three weeks during WorkFest.

Workfest is CAP’s alternative Spring Break for colleges across the country.

Three temporary groups from the University of Massachuetts, St. Mary’s College, and the University of Dayton donated their time for this project.

The money for materials and contract labor came from Mountain Housing Corporation and from Kentucky Housing Corporation’s TANF Program. Delinda Huff, CAP’s housing specialist, coordinated the finances. Shevella’s monthly mortgage payment for a new home is much less than the rent payment for an aging mobile home with holes in the floor.

Shevella is very appreciative of the services provided by CAP. She will miss having Robert and his crew around, but she and Brent are excited about moving into her new home.

hen faced with the tradegy of a near fatal automobile accident that left her husband disabled, Sherry Love took matters into her own hands and headed for the kitchen.

There, with her friend Freda Goble, the two began a journey in establishing a cottage industry of candlemaking that keeps growing as each day passes by.

Freda and Sherry had both been in other venues of employ­ ment, Freda, a Licensed Practical Nurse and Sherry had a career at a local manufacturing plant. As fate would have it, family obligation, illness and a sparse job market, forced the two to look within themselves to solve their financial woes.

After prayer and a little patience they began making handmade baskets and selling them to their neighbors. It dawned on Sherry that they needed to come up with a product that would be consumable, something that would make people come back for more. The decision was forged - CANDLES - and they agreed to make the best one on the market, that would insure customer satisfaction and cement brand loyalty.

In 1996, the business was hatched in the kitchen of a mobile home and has grown into a large warehouse that employs fourteen people. This spring, they are nearly splitting at the seams and will be forced to look for a larger facility to house the ever growing operation. Their product is sold wholesale in Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, Tennessee and some additional southern states. Within the state of Kentucky, the product is the top seller for craft product at every state park in the Bluegrass.

There they met Marilyn Payson, who has been instrumental in assistance with developing a marketing/business plan, while identifying critical guidelines to promote growth and continued success.

“The teamwork is astounding.

This has been the epitome of me being a coach. I might have had a suggestion to get them out of their comfort zone, but now I am the cheerleader.” continued Marilynn.

“They have 1,600 accounts and produce 1,000 candles a day and each day they are increasing their production.” Marilyn said.

“It’s really just knowing how to cook, if I make apple butter I make it how my mama made it, it’s really just knowing the right ingredients.” stated Sherry very matter-of-fact.

“I add fragrances/scents like I’m baking a cake,” continued Sherry.

Sherry has become a certified “chemist”, learning the multitude of fragrances and mixing colors, studying the nuisances of bum effects and how to construct the best possible container for the product. Sherry’s wheels are constantly moving, she has even developed a special packaging unit to ship the product. In addition to

designing the candles, mixing the fragrances and coming up with color schemes to please any decorating taste, Sherry is a full-fledged inventor. She has created special equipment to fulfill the plant’s specific needs and one example was under construction. When ques­ tioned about an ice cream custard machine, she replied “I think I can rig this to be a lotion dispenser.”

The plant not only churns out candles, the women have expanded their line to include everything from body gels, wax tarts, lotions and room sprays, ranging in price from $2 to $30.

Sherry devised a candle capper, a ceramic topper that cuts down oxygen intake of the wick and thus prevents smoking and sooting.

Always with their customer’s satisfaction in mind and continued brand loyalty the two are realistic about business.

“We have built the business on small shoppes, mom and pop stores that started with us at one case and then boomed to place a $20,000 order. If one of the small stores walks out tomorrow it wouldn’t be as devastating financially, as opposed to the dent a large department store chain’s departure would create.

“We are wearing every cap in the world running this business.” stated Freda Goble.

Freda’s capacity is varied, in that she serves as the office manager, in charge of personnel, she is the financial advisor, managing the books and accounting, while keeping everyone happy and

rolling.

Nothing is left to waste, even the “scrap wax” is utilized to create fire logs, mixed with oak chips the fragrant logs serve as fire starters and are rustically beautiful as well as aromatic.

Love-Lites, Inc. was born out of hardship and will survive the rough spots and forge toward a bright future. With a little luck, a lot of prayer, some sweat and tears, their flame will continue to illuminate and light the way.

Communities are like plants: some varieties grow quite well with very little added care needed.

Others often need a little something extra, a little nourishment mixed with patience.

And if communities could be compared to plants, the Christian Ap-

palachian Project (CAP) could be said to resemble a gentle shower of warm rain. Why? Because of its strong community coali­ tions, a philosophy that began years ago with CAP founder Father Ralph W. Beiting.

Increasingly more agen­ cies, both public and private, are realizing the intrinsic value of sharing resources and talents,

rather than operating in a vacuum. Public school systems are partnering with communities to assist with tutoring. State law enforcement entities are relying on communitybased centers to curb juvenile offenses. Non­ profit organizations throughout the nation are utilizing numerous media outlets in hopes that carefully broadcasted

public service announcements will tip the scales to provide a positive influ­ ence. Community partnerships, coali­ tions and contracts not only ease the burden of human service needs and responsibilities, but it also helps the process of finally turning over the fin­ ished product to the community.

In the past several months, several long-term, CAP-established projects such as schools, learning centers, food and cloth­ ing banks and residential shel­ ters, have gone on to become projects by communities, for communities.

One example is Hazel Green Academy. Es­ tablished in 1880 with an initial investment of $1,500 by three community leaders, “Hazel Green” operated as one of the first boarding schools in the region. For the past 12 years, the academy has housed the Wolfe County Arts Association and a lifelong learning center that offers classes in pottery, stained glass, quilt­ ing, writing retreats and conferences.

The center also hosts Women’s Wellness Weekends that provide a way for anyone, creative or not, to discover and develop the artist within. While the S pring 2 0 0 2

Academy is sustained by a grant from the Steele-Reese foundation, CAP also provides help in the form of grant mon­ ies, renovations and maintenance.

In Garrard County, Kentucky, CAP awarded two separate grants totaling over $5,000 to a local youth and teen center known as Up with Youth. The center’s beginnings were tough, accord­ ing to center director Dr. Everett Priddy.

“When we moved to 102 Buford Street - where we are now - all the grant money went toward completely refurbishing the building: new bathrooms, car­ peting, heating and cooling, every­ thing.”

While grants helped get the center off and running, Rev. Priddy insists that the partnership forged with CAP fostered independence.

“We’re trying our best to be indepen­ dent. We do our own fundraising and all services are strictly voluntary.”

The center opened in 1997 and currently serves 150-200 children ages six to 18, per week. Rev. Priddy also pastors at the Hyattsville Baptist Church in Garrard County.

Mountain Christian Academy in Floyd County has also remained a viable

alternative for private primary schooling. Estab­ lished in 1983 in response to the request of some 83 local families needing an education alternative for their children, the school rests on a reclaimed strip mining job purchased by CAP. Last year, a con­ tinuation grant was awarded to the institution as well as a 50-year lease, due to expire in 2049.

Adjacent to MCA lies the 22

Piarist School, a collegepreparatory facility founded in 1990. The Piarist movement began nearly 500 years ago with the opening of what is believed to be the first modern public school. St. Joseph Calasanz began this brave undertaking upon his ordainment and subsequent relocation to Rome, a place teeming with poverty-stricken

children. The school begun by St. Joseph was free and open to every child, regardless of reli­ gion. While Piarists pro­ fess vows of poverty, chastity and obedience, they also take a fourth vow to dedicate their lives to youth education.

According to Father Thomas Carroll, the school’s principal, CAPsponsored grants provide a stable resource to en­ sure salaries are paid. In addition to grants, the tuition-free institution also utilizes money generated from fundraising efforts of the fathers.

“People want to know how we can run a tuitionfree school,” says Father “Tom.” “I think we’re an inspiration to other [nonprofit-based] schools.

On the postsecondary level, CAP sponsors the Pikeville College School of Osteopathic Medicine (PCSOM). Five years ago, CAP donated $50,000 to get the four year program off and running. In May 2001, the school graduated its first

“I feel very grateful for the privilege of working with some of the finest volunteers from CAP,” she says of CAP’s depar­ ture. “And I know we’re all thankful that the attic will stay open.” Another means of assistance CAP provides is monies awarded through the Human Services Grant Program. Grants as high

as $5,000 are awarded yearly to programs that exhibit traits of commu­ nity service where it is most needed, as well as survivability. In FY 01, CAP awarded grants totaling over $375,000 to local human-servicebased non-profit pro­ grams.

The Christian Appalachian Project (CAP) welcomed nearly 500 students from across the nation to their 11th Annual spring break alternative Appalachian WorkFest 2002- Building Peace, Piece By Piece. Students arrived from destinations as far as Texas, Maine, Florida and Wisconsin. A break from classes and collegiate demands oftentimes finds students heading for warmer temperatures, sand, sun and someplace to soak up fun. However, CAP provides a volunteering experience that gives students a lasting, meaningful vacation, while supplying deserving families substantial housing. Students often realize their presence in Appalachia changes lives of those they assist, consequently impacting their own viewpoint in the process. Throughout the break groups repaired leaking roofs, removed rotting floors, built porches and replaced broken windows, as well as participated in the construction of new homes throughout eastern Kentucky. In addition to manual labor, the participants of WorkFest 2002 became acquainted with Appalachian culture and traditions through a series of evening programs and activities, through music, local speakers, artisans and entertainers.

Estalene has 5 children as well as grandchildren.

She baby-sits her 18 month old granddaughter, Jada, everyday, and also finds time to do some gardening and cooking.

Although Estalene was sad to see her family’s old home tom down, she is elated to have a new home. Ms. Edmonds is getting a low interest loan and some grant money to pay for the materials for the house, and CAP is donating the labor to build it.

Estalene Edmonds grew up on the very spot where her new home will be built. The old home she used to occupy was the oldest house in Martin County, approximately 200 years old. Both her grandparents and parents raised their families in the old home where Estalene’s mother made clothes and her father farmed.

Growing up, Estalene’s parents’ produced nearly all of the food they ate, even with ten children in the family.

Benny and Brenda Johnson love flowers and growing a garden every year. Benny is a disabled coal miner. They have two little girls, Amber and Stephanie and a pet iguana. Brenda has worked several jobs but cannot work now because of an illness. A new house will be built where their old trailer once set. The family is also getting low interest loans, grant money and CAP is donating the labor to build the house.

Tammy Caynor naturally emphathizes with those needing help when life gets tough, which is probably the reason she derives so much satisfac­ tion as an Outreach case­ worker in Louisa, a small distressed county just south of Ashland. In the morning, when she reports to her office, she knows the day will be filled with accomplishments making a “to do” list, crossing things off, meeting with partici­ pants, filling needs that are as varied as the folks who possess them: a young woman may want to finish her education, but is unable to afford daycare; a struggling, working couple might need car repairs to travel to and from work each day; a single mother who makes $30 too much per month to qualify for a medical card and yet is not eligible for her company’s

health insurance, needs den­ tures or perhaps an extraction of an abscessed tooth. Nearly every possible scenario has played out within the four walls of her small but organized office.

As a caseworker, Tammy has access to a multitude of re­ sources to help those who have exhausted all other avenues of help: family, friends and any other public or private funding agencies. But, just like the limited wage of most of her participants, Tammy’s funds are limited as well, necessitating that all participants must perform community service, either themselves or by someone else.

This not only helps CAP and the community at large, but the act of community service represents a value that has seemingly lost effect on some - the value of work and taking responsibility

for one’s own means of sur­ vival. Day after day, Outreach program manager Russ Taylor lays out the game plan to his team of caseworkers: Brenda Crum, Floyd County; Jill Stafford, Johnson County; Bill Krebs, Knott County; Tammy Caynor, Lawrence County; Parthena Martin, Magoffin; Iva Davis, Martin; and Molly McKinley, Mingo County, West Virginia. During the monthly staff meeting, Russ reiterates the process a caseworker must initiate when helping someone.

Just like a coach readying his players for a close game, Russ scrawls the positions on a rolling chalkboard. Arrows, flowcharts and quick erasures leaving a trail of chalk dust are the media for driving the following point home - participants must do commu­ nity service to “give back” that

which has been taken from the community. With this message occupying her thoughts, Tammy makes a conscious effort to help those who truly want to better their lives and are willing to work for Outreach assistance. One morning, a slightly pale, extremely thin woman comes into Tammy’s office, requesting help. The young woman had lived a lifetime in her 23 years; she was married with three children, no education or work experience, perhaps not even a chance to realize her own true potential. Lisa married when she was 15 to a man of 38 years.

Tammy explains the requirement prior to receiv -ing aid of any type. Lisa nods quickly and rises quickly from her chair, a signal that working would be no problem but in fact, a welcome relief from the isolation and loneliness at home. Lisa first cleaned the bathroom of the Louisa office, which, to her, didn’t seem dirty, and continued with vacuuming, watering the plants, dusting, washing coffee cups in the break room and mopping. When she looked up, it was almost 4:30. “Could I come back tomorrow?” she asked quickly. No need, Tammy thought. But before she could explain that the required number of community service hours had been m et... “I ’d do it for free,” said Lisa. “I just like

The next day was the same, only Lisa would answer the phone while workers in the office went to lunch and on breaks. She was careful to write the names down cor­ rectly, although she wasn’t sure about the spelling. But the second day must have been okay; at least, nobody complained. That first day was a year ago. Lisa helps almost everyone in the Louisa office now and they’re like family to her. Better, in fact.

“I want her to do so well,” says Tammy whenever she retells Lisa’s story. “She’s getting her GED, she’s helping us here at the office, but most importantly, she’s gaining more and more self-confidence every day. If there’s a lull in my day, I’ll give Lisa vocabu­ lary words to

study because she’ll be that much closer to passing the [GED] and getting a job.” It was this spirit of determina­ tion to help Lisa that turned Tammy’s own life around just a few months earlier.

During breaks and right before meet­ ings, Tammy would talk about how she came to know CAP. Much like Lisa, she saw that opportuni­ ties were hers for the asking, as long as she worked hard and improved. Tammy had worked hard for nearly anything she got.

Before getting control of her life with the help of CAP and other services, it seemed as though Tammy’s efforts were gleaning few positive results.

After moving from California to Kentucky, Tammy realized that everything, especially the people, were different. It seemed as if everything she needed was hers, thanks to her dealings with the people at CAP. Such help was comforting to a recently divorced parent of two small children.

During this difficult period in her life, Tammy remained in Louisa to stay near a mutual friend of her and her ex-husband’s. That friend was Ruth Branham, former Lawrence County caseworker. It was this relation­ ship that helped Tammy realize not only her options, but her potential. But first, Tammy needed to finish school.

When GED classes began, Tammy was on crutches due to a

knew it. fractured ankle. At night, she would go to class and during the day she worked. Because she was well within poverty guidelines, she would take her smallest son, Jacob, to the Genesis Child Development Center near where she lived. Payments were based on income, so the price was right, and more importantly, Jacob began a foundation of strength from knowing God through the Genesis teachers. Life was changing so rapidly; it was overwhelm­ ing. But so far, Jacob’s three years were already better than Tammy’s 25.

Life would be different for Jacob; she just knew it.

And this thought drove Tammy to even higher goals.

Upon receiving her GED through adult ed, Tammy enrolled in Ashland Community College that

Computers came naturally for her. So far, unlike life, they were rational and predictable.

In the fall of 2000, Tammy worked as a temp in the Louisa office, but her job would end when summer camps closed for the year and full-time employees would return to their regular duties. It was a trying time. But after her temporary position ended, Tammy decided to apply for a position as the housing secretary in Hagerhill. With computer training and first­ hand knowledge of CAP’s infrastructure, the job was a breeze. To this day, housing employees still talk about how handy Tammy had become. She loved the people in housing, as well as the people they served, but somehow, it wasn’t enough.

She had to do more. So

Tammy jumped at the chance.

She knew the area and she knew the avenues of help all too well because she had once traveled them. Plus, it would be that “something more” she craved but didn’t quite understand. Which made it even easier to take Lisa, a young woman who had enough experience for a lifetime, and show her a better way. In essence, she gave it all back. Together, Tammy and Lisa continue to work for Outreach, a physically demand­ ing job. Every day, they report to the Louisa office, where each day gives them the opportunity to give all the life­ changing support they had received, back to the community. Today, Lisa is still working toward her GED and Tammy has enrolled Jacob in public kindertgarten, a milestone that leaves Tammy happy but sad because he had to leave behind the family at Genesis who helped him learn, grow, pray and know that God loves him. “When I first enrolled Jacob, he asked me why they didn’t pray before meals like they did at Genesis; I told him to pray quietly to him self and he did, but that’s how much the staff at Genesis have impacted his appreciation for God and the power of prayer.”

Your magazine brings back memories of where we came from, what they called the “sticks” in Pennsylvania. The biggest town nearby was Johnstown or Altoona. We knew what it was like to be poor and were always so grateful to get relief - we call it welfare here. We’re going back many, many years, at least 55 years ago or more. Thank God for people like you who care so much. God bless you all for what you do and for such a fantastic magazine and for all the beautiful people of Appalachia!

REFLECTIONS ON WORKFEST 2001 The U.S. Postal Service’s motto “Neither rain, nor snow, nor sleet, nor hail,” fit Workfest 2001 like a glove.

We had all of that plus a couple of beautiful, sunny days. Bad weather did not dampen the enthusiasm of the group working on Ron and Helen’s home, it just made them more determined to complete at least one part of the renovation before returning to college. Helen came to love every person from each group, so thankful Thanks so much for a powerful and for their help in trying to make their home larger for the profound spring three grandchildren they are raising. I have never been as inspired as I have been during Workfest. The families we helped and the joy that they showed while they were helping us just can’t be ex­ plained in words. You have to experience it for yourself first hand. I want to thank CAP for giving me this opportu­ nity to help people in need and enjoying the smiles on their faces.

Coming to CAP, I wasn’t sure what to expect.

Now as I prepare to depart I’ve come to under­ stand more fully what this service experience is about. My bones ache, my muscles are sore and I am tired-yet also I am at peace for the first time in months. A sence of gratitude and spiritually is present here in such an environment. I find my heart and mind opening to the world at large. At CAP you can leave your “safety zone” and emerge into the reality of injustice—A journey that is utterly exhausting and yet uniquely fulfilling. In my brief stay, I’ve grown and matured in ways that could not have been predicted. We will all treasure this experience for many years to come.

Housing In 22 of Kentucky’s 49 Appalachian counties, over 10% of occupied housing is in substandard condition.

This translates to 46% of Kentucky’s Appalachian counties having serious problems with substandard housing.

CAP Volunteer-Kiara Klister and her father, Dave, a master carpenter from Wisconsin, teamed up, along with six other family members to do construction on a housing project in Owsley County, Kentucky.

While the U.S. rate for substandard housing was 5.3 percent of all occu­ pied homes in 1990, over half (57 percent) of Central Appalachian counties had a higher percentage of substandard homes.
