This past Summer and now Fall have really sailed by. So many beautiful weddings took place with the gathering of families and friends, touching vows, silly moments, breathtaking decor and so many happy couples. We’re in New England, so barn locations are still holding strong in popularity as well as tent weddings in various locations. Ballrooms in numerous sizes and locations give great options for weddings such as country clubs, hotels with city views and even mountain tops. We’ve noticed the surge in popularity of food trucks and mobile pizza kitchens with their delicious food options for full receptions as well as late-night bites. There’s been an abundance of beautiful cakes, dessert tables and the still popular Signature Drinks. We’ve also noticed the family pet becoming a popular guest at weddings. We’ve enjoyed the opportunity to view so many, in person, as well as the finished weddings from photographers and videographers. I’m always looking at the emotion, the story, the faces of the couple, as they say their vows, as they take to the dance floor for their first dance or as they take in a quiet moment together. The one thing I can say is that it’s really all about the couple…it’s what you want. A thoughtful, well planned celebration that’s all your style, that will allow you and your guests to enjoy the moments that unfold throughout the day. And who knows…maybe you’ll find your wedding featured in the pages of The Wedding Day Sourcebook! In this issue you’ll find some Real New England Weddings that will give you inspiration as well as story of a last-minute rescue that reminds us that it’s good to have some great connections and wonderful wedding professionals on your side! On a sad note, we say goodbye to the long-standing Springfield Marriott Ballroom, in downtown Springfield, who has been the location for hundreds and hundreds of weddings, parties, galas and more. If you’re wondering what wedding trends are going to be big in 2018, look no further. Whether planning a wedding yourself or just looking to see what’s next in the wedding world, read on. Below you will find the freshest themes and a forecast on what’s trending now in weddings. Long before the wedding, there is an engagement and with that comes an engagement ring. This year is no different in terms of couples continuing the theme of gifting a beautiful symbol to express their love and intention, however there has been a shift in the styles that are being gifted. A variety of non traditional engagement rings are seeing an uptick in popularity. No longer is the classic diamond engagement ring the only option for the “forever ring”. Nowadays, many couples are opting for a variety of new and old designs featuring beautiful gemstones. Emeralds, Sapphires Aquamarines and Rubies are among some of the most popular precious gems that are making their way into beautiful settings for the newly engaged. Perhaps most recently reintroduced to pop culture by Kate Middleton’s non diamond engagement ring, this theme seems to have luckily trickled down to the general public. A beautiful, heirloom engagement ring need not follow suite with what has been typical in past. Couples today are finally celebrating and gifting rings in array of vibrant hues. Another hot trend this season is one that is good for all of us, that is to say, green themes are in! With climate change a very real and daunting reality, many couples and vendors are transitioning toward greener options. Sustainable and/or eco friendly possibilities are becoming more prevalent and indeed, so too is the demand. Everything from digital or recycled paper invitations produced with soy based inks, repurposed/rented reception decor to locally sourced food and wedding favor options, living green now extends toward wedding planning as well. Similarly, we will be seeing a lot of literal greenery this season. Botanical inspired designs and elements will grace weddings of all kinds in the coming year. Integrating natural themes through the inclusion of lush greenery, organic inspired uplighting and outdoor receptions are just a few of the ways we will see nature taking center stage. It’s no surprise (and perhaps a further indication of the collective unconscious) the Pantone color of the year is “Greenery”. As such, this green theme is likely to also affect many couple’s wedding palettes. We will be seeing a great variety of greens (think sage, emerald, evergreen and kelly among others) being integrated into the color schemes of 2018 weddings. The days of having to choose one tone and stick to it are finally over. Millennials are notorious for loving mashups and this theme clearly translates as far as weddings are concerned. Mixed metallics (think various tones of gold, brass, copper) will be woven together in new, beautiful and unique ways. Whether combining complimentary tones as part of the wedding palette, accessories, bridesmaids attire or reception decor, weddings in the next year are sure to be gilded in a stunningly fresh fashion. As the old proverb goes, “what goes around comes around”. So true in many areas of life including weddings and this year is no different. In the coming season we will be seeing old world patterns and styles breathing new life. Antique chinoiserie china patterns are being integrated in new ways gracing stationary and wedding cakes alike. Baroque elements are being reborn as delicate embellishments on wedding gowns and accessories. Simple, natural and flowing hairstyles reminiscent of those popularized during the art nouveau movement are gaining momentum. Weave a little history into your wedding and you won’t regret it. While so many of the themes that are trending now are certainly lovely, one would hope that one in particular will continue to expand and indeed, stand the test of time. With more couples and vendors making mindful, environmentally conscious decisions, weddings will undoubtedly look and feel different than those in past. This necessary shift is something we can each incorporate in our own way. Even making small choices to plan a “greener” wedding, will collectively have a huge impact. Whether embracing a literal or figurative “green” wedding, with so many gorgeous, fresh themes gaining popularity, this next phase of weddings is certain to be not only sustainable but stunning as well. 14 Wedding Day Sourcebook

Emily Foxtrot Dance Lessons Q. Tell us about your Business: I prepare wedding couples for their first dance, work with family members for a parent/child dance, and teach general skills so they can really enjoy the music. Q. Detail what your services bring to a wedding celebration Dancing in front of an audience is a new experience for many people. With preparation, it can be a magical part of the wedding celebration. Whether it’s the wedding couple doing a romantic Rumba, a father/ daughter rocking out to East Coast Swing, or a mother/son twirling to a Waltz tune, choosing a song that captures the relationship and learning to dance together brings depth to this special moment. I teach a variety of styles so we can find a dance to fit almost every song. Another important aspect of wedding dance are the memories created in the minds of the participants and in the images that capture the day. There’s nothing quite like a picture of a fabulous dip at the end of the dance, and when the photographer knows it’s coming, s/he can be in the right place at the right time. Q. Tell us about one of the most unique details or touching moments you were ever a part of at a wedding A couple with limited dance experience said that not only was their first dance the highlight of the reception, when the groom did a turn it blew the crowd away and they erupted in applause. Q. What word(s) of advice would you give engaged couples that are planning their wedding? I would suggest discussing their hopes and concerns about the first dance. Some couples may want to go all out with a piece choreographed to their song, but even a small amount of education and practice make a big difference in confidence, ease, and enjoyment. Q. Tell us something about your business that makes you stand out/be different or connect with your client. My students and I enjoy each other because I’m patient and bring humor into the lesson. We focus on learning to dance, but having fun, feeling safe and developing confidence are the real goals. I never require a minimum number of lessons. Also, navigating the challenges of learning to dance together can be a meaningful part of preparing for the commitment of marriage, and I enjoy drawing the parallels between dancing and life. For Fun: Q. What’s your favorite food? Yes! (as long as it’s not too spicy) Q. What personally inspires you? I’m inspired by people who are dedicated to being the best version of themselves professionally and personally. Q. How do you spend your downtime? What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working so hard? Dancing (surprise!) and seeing movies on the big screen take my mind off of work, and I love to hang out with friends. Did I mention the ocean? Q. If you were a new addition to the crayon box...what color would you be and why? I’d be a new texture, like an oil pastel that spreads smoothly on the paper and you can mix into other colors with your hands. Q. Share three things no one knows about you. “I knew when I met you an adventure would happen” - A. A. Milne By Linda Ruel Flynn
This could not be truer when it comes to Keegan and Emily. So it was no surprise their wedding would feel adventure-like. They met as college students in Burlington, Vermont. Emily at the University of Vermont, Keegan at Champlain College. Over the ten years together leading to their marriage they snowboarded the U.S., hiked the mountains of Vermont, jumped into rivers, traveled to music festivals, refurbished a school bus into a camper traveling across the U.S., settled in Truckee, CA for a year, got a puppy, bought a house in Vermont, fell in love with Costa Rica-where Keegan proposed and soon after the adventure of wedding planning began. The wedding planning culminated in a three day party, complete with enormous bonfire, on the shores of Lake Champlain at Basin Harbor in Vergennes, Vermont. A warm and breezy day in July friends and family gathered to witness and celebrate. A close friend, Chris officiated the ceremony. Chris created a ceremony that truly spoke to Keegan and Emily’s love of nature and the power of the universe. From the beginning of planning it was important to Keegan and Emily that this event be laid back, not fussy, be blue (paying homage to the enormous blue hydrangea of Emily’s childhood on the Jersey shore)-white and green, incorporate hand-made elements whenever possible and be absolutely fun. Believe me, it hit all those marks with Friends and family members pitching in to make it happen. Hand made elements began with hand-painted invitations by Flora-Ly Studios aka Keegan’s mom, Linda Ruel Flynn. The branches of green leaves and blue hydrangea water colored on each of the invitations were carried through the escort cards and table names. Wedding favors were birch branch planters made by Keegan’s dad and filled by Emily with a variety of succulents and moss. Family spent the year gathering clear bottles, old and new, to create Emily’s vision of table scapes of single white flowers and greens in a variety of bottles on white linen. Emily and her Mom spent hours getting the right flower into the right bottle. Once guests added their birch branch succulents to the table the vision was complete and it was as magical as Emily had envisioned. Basin Harbor is a sprawling compound of waterfront, cabins, hotel, golf course and walking trails. A golf cart to get around is a must. Needless to say when a groom and his five groomsmen climb into one hilarity ensues. Especially when the best man is 6’5”. The bouquets, boutonnières and were made by Keegan’s mother, Linda of Flora-Ly Studios. The bouquet elements had significance to the bride and groom. The bouquets were blue hydrangea from Emily’s family home in New Jersey, white hydrangea from Keegan and Emily’s garden, white peonies from Alaska-Keegan’s favorite flower and a homage to his grandmother- with flowers from Green Mountain Floral to round out the beauty. Emily and Linda decided on the flowers after a couple of trips to Green Mountain Floral and chats with their helpful staff. The ceremony arrangements carried through the elements of blue, white and green. After some guidelines from Linda, Keegan and Emily’s parent’s did a great job putting these together. Jacob Albee of Burlington, Vermont crafted the wedding bands. Keegan’s is meteorite and platinum. Emily’s is platinum. The Western New England Bridal Shows Align with Unify Against Bullying Like many local businesses, The Western New England Bridal Shows try to do their share of making connections and giving back to charities and events that are close to their hearts and that help change peoples’ lives. This fall, The Western New England Bridal Shows will be giving a portion of the proceeds from the November 5th Fall Bridal Show at the MassMutual Center to Unify Against Bullying, a non-profit, whose pledge is to bring an end to bullying through the celebration of true diversity. Unify’s goal is to provide grants to those who are in the best position to make a difference, the front-line heroes who deal with the issue of bullying every day. Through providing funding and resources, Unify can show the children of the world that the days of ignoring bullying are over. Instead, they celebrate differences and come together as one community. Their motto is “When we stand together, We stand as one.” You can view the Unify Against Bullying website at www.unifyagainstbullying.org. “I met Leanne and Cole almost immediately before their ceremony as a last minute fill in for their original photographer who decided not to show up for work that day. Thankfully, we have a tight community of wedding professionals here in Western Mass, so when the Lord Jeffery Inn called with a Wedding Emergency to see if I was available within the hour, the only question I had was “Is the couple nice?” I was told they were so I loaded up my gear and sped off to Amherst. Upon arriving at the venue I was quickly introduced to Leanne + Cole and, as advertised, they were super nice. They were also super happy someone was available on such short notice after the unprofessional behavior of the no-show. We did, however, carry on. My time with them and their families began with the ceremony. As Leanne was escorted down the aisle by her parents, she immediately jumped into Cole’s arms as this was the first time they saw each other that day. They both smiled excitedly throughout the ceremony

which culminated with Cole stomping on the traditional glass. We made our way to the Lord Jeffery Inn’s library for family portraits, and then stepped outside for a few minutes to make some portraits of just the two of them amongst the flowers still in bloom in front of the Inn. After being introduced into the reception they went immediately into their first dance which was sung by Leanne’s sister. Some heartfelt toasts were given, which both caused laughter and moved others to tears as stories were told about the family’s journey leading up to the wedding day. With lots of dancing and an energetic hora behind them, we went outside for some nighttime portraits, after which Leanne + Cole danced the night away. Here are some photos from the day…” -Seth Kaye

Wedding Guest Know-How! You’ve been invited to a wedding…or maybe even more than one. These awesomely happy couples want you to join in, share their joy and celebration. So, you begin planning, what to wear, if their celebration will be turned into a little vacation with multi-day events… oh and your dance moves! But there are those rare times when a guest just might do something, unintentionally, that might detract from the couple’s wedding day — in big ways or small. As a guest at a wedding you’re excited. Excited to be a part of a wonderful celebration, to connect with family and friends, give best wishes to the wonderful couple, take pictures, and just enjoy the moment. But, hold on, sometimes a guest might not realize that something they are doing is taking away from the day in some way — taking away time from the bride and groom, hampering the joy of the day or adding a distraction that is unnecessary. As someone who has seen their fair share of weddings, we’ll continue with some things to consider when attending a wedding. Pass On Wearing White You’re going to a wedding, planning your attire, your look. Pass on wearing white or ivory. That old tale still holds true. White or ivory should be left to the bride, but of course you can wear some white, just not an all-white ensemble. The same goes for “club” dresses that tend to be too short, extremely tight and sometimes showing too much skin. A beautiful cocktail dress, awesome shoes with complimenting jewelry is trending in. You can dress for the style of the wedding taking your clues from the style of the invitation and location of the wedding. Please Be On Time to the Ceremony You’ve received this beautiful invitation. The time listed on the invitation is the time the ceremony should begin, so be sure to get to the ceremony location at least 10 minutes earlier. Behind the scenes of a wedding, everything runs on a timeline. Wedding professionals move flawless through a schedule to give the couple those amazing moments, awesome looks, great food and music. And things can happen, if you run late or hit traffic, it’s not the end of the world. If you are late just sneak in the back. DO Be in the Moment This one is interesting. More couples have asked for an “unplugged” ceremony, meaning that they want you to put down the camera phones, the cameras and such and just “Be in the Moment.” Just watch, listen and celebrate their moment. Today’s couples hire wedding photographers to capture their special moments, décor, a beautiful cake, wonderful smiles, and family shots. The couples don’t want you to walk out into the aisle to take a picture with your camera or your phone in hand. They want you to watch them say their vows, even do their first dance, cut their cake and more, with you being in the moment, www.weddingsourcebook.com
having fun. Leave the majority of the picture taking to the professionals the couple hired. Many couples will encourage you to take pictures throughout the reception and include hashtags for social media and encourage you to use them, especially in photo booths. You may find it on a sign, on guests tables, in a program or near a photo booth. Be In Pictures Couples hire wedding photographers to capture amazing moments. They may even have a list of people to make sure they connect with. They make ask you to be in a photo with the couple…go for it. You may not like your picture taken, but make sure that the photographer can see you. Don’t try to hide as they want to be able to see you and capture the moment. Act As This is The Best Wedding... Ever Remember, it’s their day. They made the decisions on location, food, entertainment, décor and more all on their own…and you are a guest. A valued friend or family member they invited to witness and celebrate their special day. Don’t complain to the couple about the heat of the day, don’t pout about the food selection, don’t say so-and-so’s band was better. For this day, let this wedding be celebrated without question. You don’t agree with something, just take the high road and be totally happy with the celebration. Keep an Eye on Your Kids Weddings are about celebrations and often children have been invited to share in the day’s events. Children can be a wonderful addition to a wedding. But if you’re bringing your children, just be sure to keep an eye on them. Remember that weddings are not exactly toddler or kid friendly. Hot food, lighting and décor, crowded rooms, even the heat of the day can be a challenge. They can get bored at an adult event like this so bring along activities for them to do at the table (coloring books, small toys are a good way to go, things that don’t make noise) so they aren’t tempted to run around or distract you from the wedding activities. Also, if your children are not invited to the wedding, please don’t bring them. If it’s an out of town wedding, ask the couple for babysitter recommendations or ask the family of the couple if they know anyone. Have Fun & Dance A wedding is a celebration, so enjoy every moment. Hit the dance floor, enjoy the food, have some drinks, but don’t overdo it. No one likes a guest who goes overboard on the drinks. At the end of the night tell the wonderful couple that this was the best wedding you have ever been to. Give them a hug, wish them well and thank them for inviting you.
