William Dougherty
Within a Region for amplified hammered dulcimer and two pianos
Full Score www.williamdougherty.org
The work was written specifically for Franziska Fleischanderl (hammered dulcimer) and was premiered on April 29th , 2013 in the Grosser Saal at the Basel Musik Akademie in Basel, Switzerland
Composer’s Note Within a Region is a work centered on the harmonic region of a minor third (between B and D). The entirety of the pitch material is derived from a slow oscillation between the spectra of B, C, C#, D, and the microtonal regions between them. This limited harmonic palette is juxtaposed with highly disparate gestural material which first grows out of a single 7th natural harmonic on a C string at the onset of the work. Due to the special tuning (one piano is tuned down a quarter-‐tone and the hammered dulcimer is tuned down an eighth-‐tone), notated unisons sound as a blurred pitch region. Various written-‐out rhythmic devices such as the layering of multiple simultaneous tempi, accelerandi, and ritardandi serve to create a continuous undulation of the perceived tempo.
Performance Notes The score is transposed: Piano 1 sounds as it is notated. Piano 2 sounds a quarter-‐tone lower than notated. Hammered Dulcimer sounds an eighth-‐tone lower than notated. Accidentals apply for the entire measure in which they appear and are octave specific. Piano 2 should be tuned down a quarter-‐tone from piano 1, which should be tuned in equal-‐ temperament (A440). The hammered dulcimer should be tuned down an eighth-‐tone from piano1. The hammered dulcimer should be amplified using a surface microphone attached firmly to the soundboard. This should be routed to a mixer and a stereo sound system on the stage. The hammered dulcimer must match the dynamic capabilities of the pianos throughout. The goal is to blend the sound of the hammered dulcimer with that of the pianos. All tremolandi should be played as fast as possible except when otherwise indicated.
General Notes: = c. flat 31 cents flat = diminuendo to nothing (fast) (slow) = gradually slow the tremolo from as fast as possible to a complete stop = play the 7th natural harmonic – all numbers within circles indicate the sounding natural harmonic. The lower notated pitch under the circled number indicates the string/key on which to perform the harmonic and the upper pitch indicates the resultant sound.
Notes for Piano: The sustain pedal on both piano should be held throughout the entirety of the piece. All natural harmonics at the beginning are played on the C3 string. To acquire the notated natural harmonics, lightly touch the C3 string while firmly striking the key. If needed, use small pieces of tape on the string to denote the exact required position of the finger for each specific harmonic. The 7th harmonic will require a finger position 1/7th of the string length; the 6th will require 1/6th of the string length and so on.
Notes for Hammered Dulcimer: All natural harmonics at the beginning are played on the C3 string as with the piano (see above). The method of excitation differs in that you must strike your string with your mallet rather than striking a key. Make sure to use a mallet that brings about the clearest sounding natural harmonic. Never dampen the hammered dulcimer.
