University and Athletic Administration

University President Director of Athletics

Dr. Lorraine Bernotsky Terry Beattie

Dr. R. Lorraine (Laurie) Bernotsky was unanimously named the 16th president of West Chester University by the Board of Governors of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education (PASSHE), effective July 1, 2024. A longstanding champion for public education and State System students, Dr. Bernotsky is a first-generation college graduate who leads the largest *R2 institution within Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education. Prior to being named president, Dr. Bernotsky held the position of interim president of Pennsylvania Western University (PennWest) as a loaned executive from West Chester University. Known for being a transformative leader in higher education, Dr. Bernotsky is prepared to help West Chester University chart its path toward the next 150 years.

As a collaborative and inclusive leader who is centered on student success, Dr. Bernotsky holds nearly three decades of progressive experience in higher education. She began her career at West Chester University in 1996 as a member of the political science faculty. When the opportunity opened to serve as associate provost and dean of graduate studies at West Chester University, she competed in a national search for the role and served for several years before becoming provost in 2015.

As West Chester University’s provost, Dr. Bernotsky successfully led the University’s Academic Affairs Division, which oversees approximately 850 faculty and is comprised of six colleges, as well as two schools, that offers more than 100 academic degree programs while also housing the Office of Institutional Research, the Center for International Programs (now the Center for Global Engagement), the offices of undergraduate admissions, enrollment management, financial aid, the graduate school, and undergraduate student support services.

Executive vice president was added to Dr. Bernotsky’s role in 2017 and, as the University’s second-in-command, she also assumed leadership of the University’s budget and labor relations function.

Recognized throughout the Commonwealth as a highly respected and effective higher education leader, Dr. Bernotsky was asked by Chancellor Daniel Greenstein to serve PennWest temporarily in the fall of 2022 as executive vice president and chief operating officer, providing guidance and direction in all operational areas. From October 2022 through June 2023, Dr. Bernotsky worked collaboratively in this loaned capacity to help strengthen PennWest’s operational excellence, strategic enrollment management systems, and long-term plans for financial sustainability. The positive effects of Dr. Bernotsky’s work ultimately led to her appointment as interim president of PennWest on July 1, 2023 by PASSHE’s Board of Governors; she assumed the role four months after her appointment as PennWest’s acting president and following the retirement of PennWest founding president, Dr. Dale-Elizabeth Pehrsson.

Terry Beattie begins his ninth athletic campaign as the Director of Athletics at West Chester University and 20th overall as a member of the Golden Rams’ athletic department. Previous to being named the Interim AD in 2017, Beattie served as the Associate AD overseeing facilities and game day operations. He also oversaw all of the grounds and equipment room operations for the athletic department.

A 32-year veteran in college athletics, Beattie recently spearheaded the development of the Michael Horrocks Emerging Leaders Institute at WCU, which provides leadership training and development to a select group of outstanding student athletes who, as recognized future leaders, will be taking on the mantle of leadership within their team sometime in the future.

In his eight years as the university’s athletics director, Beattie created a Sports Performance aspect to the athletic department implementing additional resources from which WCU student-athletes could benefit. His collaboration with a number of other areas on campus gives student-athletes access to mental health and sport psychology experts, an expanded and much improved strength and conditioning program as well as education on sport nutrition.

His work in the field of Sport Leadership Training gives West Chester University’s coaching staff and administrators access to some of the cutting edge research on how to become a better leader, coach and mentor to young adults.

He has also served on a number of strategic planning committee’s both within the athletic department and in conjunction with the university. During his previous 14 years in Southeastern Pennsylvania, Beattie has chaired search committees to replace head coaches and assistant athletic directors while coordinating scheduling for West Chester University’s numerous athletic facilities. He has also served on search committees on the university side.

Beattie supervised the athletic department’s nine on-campus facilities, including both John A. Farrell Stadium and Serpico Stadium as well as Vonnie Gros Field.

A member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), Beattie was recently named the chair of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Athletic Administrators for the 2023-24 campaign. He has also served roles on the NCAA regional and national advisory committees overseeing selections to the NCAA Division II Tournament in a variety of sports.

#12/5 SETON HILL (11-0, 5-0)

Head Coach: Maeve Gallagher Career Record: (24-15)

Opening Tip... After tying Harding for the longest active home winning streak in Division II women’s basketball with a victory over California (Pa.) on Friday, December 6, and seeing this 27-game streak snapped on December 7 by IUP, West Chester will look to start a new winning streak this weekend as the Golden Rams welcome unbeaten and No. 14/7 Seton Hill to Hollinger Field House today for the final event of 2024. West Chester is even at 3-3 all-time against Seton Hill, including a win in the first meeting in 2015 and another victory over the Griffins last time they visited Hollinger Field House in December 2022. The December 2022 meeting was also the last game of the year, played on December 30 of that season and was the Griffins first visit to West Chester since December 2017. The Golden Rams triumphed by a 90-72 final, earning their first victory over the Griffins since January 2016 when the team rang in the New Year with a 70-48 victory on January 3rd of that season. Today is West Chester’s final crossover game of the year as the Golden Rams immediately shift their attention to the rigors of PSAC East play upon returning to University Ave in 2025 with a visit to Shepherd on the docket for January 3rd.

Happening Pregame... Today’s game is Parent’s Day for West Chester, as the Golden Rams will pause to recognize and thank their families for their support and dedication to Golden Ram basketball. Following this brief ceremony, West Chester will also present Michelle Kozicki with a commemorative ball in honor of her 1000th collegiate point, which she scored in the loss at Chestnut Hill on Sunday.

WCU Women’s Basketball Notes ... West Chester (4-7, 1-3) got back in the win column on Tuesday afternoon with an exciting 71-64 OT victory over Pitt-Johnstown, which marked the Golden Rams second OT victory of the month after opening December with a 79-73 OT win over Jefferson. West Chester led 33-28 at the half but needed a late-game comeback after shooting just 9 % and being outscored 16-6 in the third quarter to trail by five heading into the fourth. Trailing by three late, Kozicki rattled home a three from the top of the key, which forced OT, and West Chester outscored its hosts 9-2 in the extra session, led by six more points from Kozicki to claim the 71-64 road victory. Kozicki led West Chester in scoring with a career-high 35 points on 10-of-17 shooting from the field, including a 2-for-4 effort from deep, while also going 13-of-14 at the line. Kozicki’s 35 points are the most in a single game since Leah Johnson set the single-game scoring record with a 44-point effort against California in the 2023 NCAA Tournament. The senior forward is one of just three players since 2020 to score over 30 points in a game as she is joined by Johnson, who did so twice, and Emily McAteer, who scored 33 vs Lock Haven a year ago. West Chester shot 46.0 % (23-of-50) from the field, including a 9-for-14 (64.2 %) effort from the field in the final 15 minutes, despite shooting just 16.7 % (2-of-12) from three-point range. One of the top free-throw shooting teams in Division II, West Chester hit 82.1 % (23-of-28) at the line, including a 13-for-17 (76.4 %) effort in the fourth quarter and overtime. West Chester Kozicki is now third in the PSAC in scoring, averaging 20.0 points per game as she closes in on her 1,000th career point at WCU after notching her 1,000th collegiate point on Sunday at Chestnut Hill. Averaging 65.4 points per game on 38.7 % shooting from the field and 25.6 % from beyond the arc, Kozicki and McTamney have been crucial to the Golden Ram offense this season, averaging 20.0 and 14.9 points per game, respectively. Kozicki also leads the team and ranks fourth in the PSAC in rebounding, averaging 10.1 rebounds per game after corralling 12 more rebounds in the victory on Tuesday afternoon. As a team, West Chester also ranks fourth in free-throw percentage, knocking down 81.3 % of its shots at the line, which is also the best in the Atlantic Region.

Seton Hill Women’s Basketball Notes... Ranked 12th in the Division II women’s basketball coaches poll and fifth in the media poll, Seton Hill (11-0, 5-0) remained unbeaten on Wednesday with a complete 79-69 victory over East Stroudsburg inside the Katherine Mabis McKenna Center at Seton Hill University. Led by 23 points from Christiane Frye, who averages a team-best 18.1 points per game on the year, Seton Hill used a big second quarter (17-8) to get much-needed separation from ESU in a game that saw the first, third, and fourth quarters separated by just one point. Seton Hill shot 47.3 % from the field and 47.8 % from beyond the arc in the victory, both of which are above its season averages of 46.6 % and 32.2 %, respectively. Mia Kalich leads the team in rebounding on the year, averaging 9.4 per game, which is fifth best in the PSAC, and she added to this on Wednesday, recording a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds in the victory over East Stroudsburg.

Up Next for the Golden Rams ... Today is West Chester’s final game and final home game of 2024, as the Golden Rams will depart campus after today’s game for the Holiday Break. As part of the Division II Holiday break, West Chester will not play again until 2025, when the Golden Rams visit Shepherd on January 3 for the PSAC East opener. This matchup at the Rams will be the first of a busy fourgame in eight-day stretch that will see WCU visit Shepherd on 1/3, host Lock Haven on 1/6, visit ESU on 1/8 and host Kutztown on 1/11 on what will also be Alumni Day.

Career Record: (41-29)

Opening Tip... Currently on its longest mid-season winning streak since a 15-game streak during the 2018-19 season, the West Chester University men’s basketball team looks to push its streak to double digits on Saturday afternoon as the Golden Rams welcome Seton Hill to Hollinger Field House for the final home game and game of 2024. After dropping its first two games of the season by over 20 points, West Chester has looked like one of the best teams in Division II men’s basketball in recent weeks, rattling off nine wins in a row to climb into the receiving votes category of the NABC and D2SIDA Men’s Basketball polls. West Chester also enters play on Saturday looking to improve to a perfect 7-0 vs Seton Hill after picking up win number six over the Griffins on December 30, 2022, in what was the final game of 2022. In these six meetings, West Chester is 3-0 vs Seton Hill, including wins in January 2016, December 2017, and December 2022. Unbeaten (5-0) at home in 2024, West Chester has been very difficult to beat in Hollinger in recent years, playing to a record of 50-14 at home since 2019-20, including a mark of 10-4 in its home gym a year ago. Since the calendar turned to 2024 last January, West Chester has lost only three times in Hollinger, playing to a record of 11-3 at home, with its last home loss coming on February 3, 2024, vs. Lock Haven by the slimmest of margins (78-77).

WCU Men’s Basketball Notes ... West Chester (9-2, 4-0) continued its best winning streak since 2019 on Tuesday night with a 71-57 victory over Pitt-Johnstown in Johnstown on Tuesday afternoon. West Chester trailed only briefly on Tuesday early in the first half and led by as many as 17 twice in the second half in the 14-point triumph. Elijah Allen scored a season-high 27 points on 10-of-20 shooting, including a 5-for-11 effort from three-point range, as he and Anthony McCall were the lone Golden Rams in double figures in the victory. West Chester shot 40.8 % from the field, including a 6-for-23 (26.1 %) effort from deep, while also going 7-for-11 at the charity stripe. The Golden Rams, led by 13 rebounds from Joshua Walker, ended the game with a 45-29 lead on the glass, which led to a 22-8 lead in second-chance points. Allen’s 27-effort was his ninth double-figure scoring effort of the season and the fifth time this year that he has scored 20 points or more. Averaging a team-best 18.0 points per game, Allen has led the team in scoring six times in 11 games, and West Chester has won five of these games, with the lone exception being the season-opening loss at nationally-ranked West Liberty by a 114-91 final. The Golden Rams 91 points their second-best scoring effort of the year, trailing only the Wilmington game when the Golden Rams rolled to a 92-78 victory over the Wildcats. One of the best rebounding teams in Division II, West Chester ranks fourth in the country in rebounds per game, averaging 44.9, including 18.2 offensive rebounds per game, which leads the nation. West Chester’s +11.0 rebounding margin is also sixth-best in DII men’s basketball. West Chester averages 80.0 points per game on 42.6 % shooting from the field and 31.9 % shooting from three-point range while also hitting 70.9 % of its shots at the charity stripe. After struggling at the line through the first few weeks of the season, West Chester has improved dramatically in recent weeks, including a season-best 81.3 % effort at the stripe in an 80-76 win over Caldwell on December 14.

Seton Hill Men’s Basketball Notes... Seton Hill (9-4, 2-3) returns to action on Saturday, looking to halt a two-game losing streak after falling to East Stroudsburg by an 80-72 final on Wednesday afternoon in Greensburg. Seton Hill trailed by four at the half and was outscored 43-39 in the second half in the eight-point setback. Ryan Meis led Seton Hill in scoring in the loss, averaging 15 points, while Kedrick Curtis, who leads the team in scoring, averaging 13.6 points per game, finished with 13 of his own in the loss. Curtis also leads the team in rebounding, averaging 7.2 per game, following his team-high nine rebounds in the loss on Wednesday. Meis is second on the team in scoring, averaging 13.3 points per game, while also leading the team in rebounding through 13 games this year, averaging 3.5 rebounds per game. As a team, Seton Hill averages 78.0 points per game on 46.7 % shooting from the field and 35.7 % shooting from three-point range while also hitting 67.4 % at the free throw line. Seton Hill kept close to its averages on Wednesday night, hitting 44.2 % from the field and 33.3 % from three-point range while also going 17-for-24 (70.8 %) at the free throw line.

2024-25 West Chester University Cheerleaders

From late August through early-to-mid March each school year, West Chester University’s cheerleaders are front and center at all Golden Rams football games in the fall and both men’s and women’s basketball games in the winter. Additionally, West Chester University’s cheerleaders have traveled to Orlando, Fla., and the Wide World of Sports in January to compete in the UCA Nationals. The Golden Rams Cheer Squad placed among the top five at UCA Nationals in each of the past four years, including a national championship effort last winter and a runner-up performance in 2023.

The cheerleaders work hard in the preseason learning mostly new material for the upcoming campaign, conditioning and developing a pride in the West Chester University community. Aside from preparing their 35-member team for the year ahead, the West Chester University cheerleaders also host high school clinics in order to develop cheerleading around the area.

The West Chester University cheerleaders take on many community service projects focusing mainly on breast cancer awareness, as well as doing many youth and high school cheering clinics, donating to needy schools and volunteering with the elderly within the West Chester community.

The team also makes many public appearances as representatives of WCU, highlighted each holiday season with a spot in the borough’s annual Christmas Parade.
