Dr. R. Lorraine (Laurie) Bernotsky was unanimously named the 16th president of West Chester University by the Board of Governors of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education (PASSHE), effective July 1, 2024. A longstanding champion for public education and State System students, Dr. Bernotsky is a first-generation college graduate who leads the largest *R2 institution within Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education. Prior to being named president, Dr. Bernotsky held the position of interim president of Pennsylvania Western University (PennWest) as a loaned executive from West Chester University. Known for being a transformative leader in higher education, Dr. Bernotsky is prepared to help West Chester University chart its path toward the next 150 years.
As a collaborative and inclusive leader who is centered on student success, Dr. Bernotsky holds nearly three decades of progressive experience in higher education. She began her career at West Chester University in 1996 as a member of the political science faculty. When the opportunity opened to serve as associate provost and dean of graduate studies at West Chester University, she competed in a national search for the role and served for several years before becoming provost in 2015.
As West Chester University’s provost, Dr. Bernotsky successfully led the University’s Academic Affairs Division, which oversees approximately 850 faculty and is comprised of six colleges, as well as two schools, that offers more than 100 academic degree programs while also housing the Office of Institutional Research, the Center for International Programs (now the Center for Global Engagement), the offices of undergraduate admissions, enrollment management, financial aid, the graduate school, and undergraduate student support services.
Executive vice president was added to Dr. Bernotsky’s role in 2017 and, as the University’s second-in-command, she also assumed leadership of the University’s budget and labor relations function.
Recognized throughout the Commonwealth as a highly respected and effective higher education leader, Dr. Bernotsky was asked by Chancellor Daniel Greenstein to serve PennWest temporarily in the fall of 2022 as executive vice president and chief operating officer, providing guidance and direction in all operational areas. From October 2022 through June 2023, Dr. Bernotsky worked collaboratively in this loaned capacity to help strengthen PennWest’s operational excellence, strategic enrollment management systems, and long-term plans for financial sustainability. The positive effects of Dr. Bernotsky’s work ultimately led to her appointment as interim president of PennWest on July 1, 2023 by PASSHE’s Board of Governors; she assumed the role four months after her appointment as PennWest’s acting president and following the retirement of PennWest founding president, Dr. Dale-Elizabeth Pehrsson.
Terry Beattie begins his ninth athletic campaign as the Director of Athletics at West Chester University and 20th overall as a member of the Golden Rams’ athletic department. Previous to being named the Interim AD in 2017, Beattie served as the Associate AD overseeing facilities and game day operations. He also oversaw all of the grounds and equipment room operations for the athletic department.
A 32-year veteran in college athletics, Beattie recently spearheaded the development of the Michael Horrocks Emerging Leaders Institute at WCU, which provides leadership training and development to a select group of outstanding student athletes who, as recognized future leaders, will be taking on the mantle of leadership within their team sometime in the future.
In his eight years as the university’s athletics director, Beattie created a Sports Performance aspect to the athletic department implementing additional resources from which WCU student-athletes could benefit. His collaboration with a number of other areas on campus gives student-athletes access to mental health and sport psychology experts, an expanded and much improved strength and conditioning program as well as education on sport nutrition.
His work in the field of Sport Leadership Training gives West Chester University’s coaching staff and administrators access to some of the cutting edge research on how to become a better leader, coach and mentor to young adults.
He has also served on a number of strategic planning committee’s both within the athletic department and in conjunction with the university. During his previous 14 years in Southeastern Pennsylvania, Beattie has chaired search committees to replace head coaches and assistant athletic directors while coordinating scheduling for West Chester University’s numerous athletic facilities. He has also served on search committees on the university side.
Beattie supervised the athletic department’s nine on-campus facilities, including both John A. Farrell Stadium and Serpico Stadium as well as Vonnie Gros Field.
A member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), Beattie was recently named the chair of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Athletic Administrators for the 2023-24 campaign. He has also served roles on the NCAA regional and national advisory committees overseeing selections to the NCAA Division II Tournament in a variety of sports.

Opening Tip... After defeating Shepherd behind a great second half performance at home on Wednesday evening, the West Chester University women’s basketball team is set to remain home this morning to take on Mansfield beginning at 11 a.m. Originally scheduled for a 1 p.m. tip, the game time was moved up to a rare 11 a.m. tip due to weather related travel concerns for Mansfield. West Chester is 41-13 (.759) at home since November 2021, and to take it a step further, the Golden Rams are 35-6 (.853) at home since November 22, which includes the team’s 27-game winning streak at home, which was halted in December after starting in January 2023. West Chester is 68-12 all-time vs Mansfield despite dropping the season opener to the Mounties by a 77-72 final in late January. West Chester had been riding a five-game winning streak heading into the January 22nd meeting at Mansfield. West Chester has not lost to Mansfield since a January 2006 setback by a 72-65 final.
Happening Pregame... Prior to this morning’s game, West Chester will pause to recognize its senior class, which includes Michelle Kozicki, Anna McTamney, and Rachel Conran as today is Senior Day and the final Saturday home game for the Golden Rams.
WCU Women’s Basketball Notes ...After knocking off PSAC East leader Lock Haven on Saturday to open February, West Chester (1012, 7-8) picked up its second win in as many tries on Wednesday night at home against Shepherd. The Golden Rams used a big second half, which saw them outscore their guests 41-17, shooting 51.7 % (15-of-29) from the field to break open a tie game at the half and roll to a 63-39 victory over the Rams. West Chester held a slim four-point (12-8) lead at the end of the first quarter after going 4-for-12 from the field before seeing itself outscored 14-10 in the second to head to the halftime break even at 22-22. West Chester opened the second half on a 12-3 run, which led to the Golden Rams outscoring their guests 20-9 in the third quarter on 7-of-14 (50.0 %) shooting from the field before opening the fourth on a 13-0 run, shooting 53.3 % (8-of-13) from the field, including two makes from three-point range to coast to the 63-39 victory. Michelle Kozicki picked up her 14th double-double of the year and seventh in a row with 23 points and 13 rebounds, while Anna McTamney chipped in 15, along with 12 from Bella Mazur and 11 from Erin Daley. Kozicki ranks second in the PSAC in scoring, averaging 21.1 points per game, while her 10.3 rebounds per game are fifth best in the league. The senior forward has 14 double-doubles to her name, including seven in as many games, which ranks her in a tie for third in D2 in double-doubles while also ranking second in the PSAC. Emily Chmiel leads the PSAC and D2 in double-doubles with 16. Kozicki has also scored 35 points twice since December 17, becoming the first player to score 35 or more twice in the same season since Leah Johnson, who, along with Mitzi Reitnouer, are the only two Golden Rams to accomplish this feat. Anna McTamney is second on the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging 15.6 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. McTamney is eighth in the league in scoring, making West Chester the only team to place two players in the top 10 in the league in scoring. Erin Daley has turned in an excellent stretch of basketball for West Chester since a career-high 19 points vs Kutztown on 1/11, Daley has scored in double figures four times in seven games, including an 18-point effort in the win at Lock Haven on February 1 and 11 aganst Shepherd on Wednesday night. The sophomore forward is now averaging 8.3 points and 5.5 rebounds per game heading into the final weeks of the 2024-25 regular season. With today being Senior Day it is a good time to call to mind the success West Chester has enjoyed in recent seasons. Since 2021-22 when Conran joined the team as a freshman, West Chester is 67-47 overall and 50-30 in league play with back-to-back PSAC Semifinal and NCAA Tournament appearances and the first NCAA Atlantic Regional final appearance in team history. West Chester won 24 games in both 2022-23 and 2023-24, which is tied for the second most wins in single-season program history. As a team, West Chester averages 66.6 points per game on 39.9 % shooting from the field and 26.9 % from three-point range. West Chester also leads the PSAC and ranks fifth in Division II in free throw shooting, connecting on 79.3 % of its attempts at the stripe.
Mansfield Women’s Basketball Notes...Mansfield (9-12, 5-10) enters play off a thrilling win at the buzzer over then PSAC East leader Bloomsburg by a 62-60 final on Wednesday night. Mansfield held a two-point lead after the first quarter but needed a furious second-half comeback, led by 19 points from Cydney Stanton to earn the two-point victory. Mansfield shot 39.1 % from the field and 22.2 % from beyond the arc in the win, while also shooting 61.5 % at the line and ending the game with a 20-14 lead in turnovers. For the year, Mansfield enters play averaging 62.6 points per game on 35.3 % shooting from the field and 28.1 % from three-point range, while also shooting 64.7 % at the line. The Mounties trail by slim margins in rebounding (41.7-41.6) and turnovers (17.1-16.8). Katie Sheeler leads the team in scoring, averaging 16.1 points per game while Sarah Hortin leads the group in rebounding, averaging 8.1 rebounds per game.
Up Next for the Golden Rams ... Today is the final game of a quick two-game homestand for West Chester, which saw the team host Shepherd to open it on Wednesday night. West Chester will travel to Shippensburg next Wednesday for a 6 p.m. start in its lone game of the week before hosting East Stroudsburg on the 19th at 5:30 p.m.

Opening Tip... As the Golden Rams continue to receive votes in the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) poll and appear in the top-25 of the D2SIDA National poll, West Chester prepares to renew its rivalry with Mansfield on Saturday afternoon in Hollinger Field House beginning at 1:00 p.m. Head coach Damien Blair looks to continue his march to 300 career wins this afternoon as he enters play just one win away from becoming the second West Chester men’s basketball coach to accomplish this feat with the lone other being legendary head coach Dick DeLaney, who the Hollinger Field House floor now bears the name of alongside legendary women’s basketball head coach Deirdre Kane. West Chester will look to run its winning streak against Mansfield to six in a row on Saturday when the Mounties roll into Hollinger for an unusual 1 p.m. Senior Day tip. With game times moved up to accommodate winter weather travel concerns for the visiting Mounties, West Chester will look to improve to 62-34 all-time vs Mansfield and hand head coach Damien Blair his 300th career win as the head coach of the Golden Rams. West Chester escaped Mansfield with a narrow two-point (80-78) victory earlier this season and has not lost to the Mounties in Hollinger since a February 2008 loss by a 60-57 final. West Chester will also be looking to remain unbeaten at home this season, entering play a perfect 11-0 in Hollinger in the midst of a 15-game home winning streak, which is the best in the PSAC and tied for fourth-best in Division II men’s basketball.
Happening Pregame... Prior to this afternoon’s game, West Chester will pause to recognize its senior class, which includes Elijah Allen, Joshua Walker, Moro Osumanu, and Alex Walinski as today is Senior Day and the final Saturday home game for the Golden Rams.
WCU Men’s Basketball Notes ... Wednesday night was far from pretty by any stretch of the imagination as neither team shot north of 30.0 % from the field (29.9 % WCU; 29.8 % Shepherd), but the Golden Rams held off the visiting Rams for a 57-49 victory. West Chester scored a season-low 21 points in the first half but led 21-16 at the break and, after outscoring Shepherd 36-33 in the second half, escaped with an eight-point victory over the Rams. Anthony Purnell Jr. was the lone Golden Ram in double figures in the win, finishing with 17 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field and a perfect 6-for-6 at the free throw line.Elijah Allen has scored in double figures in 16 of his 21 games this year and led West Chester in scoring in 10 of those 16, including three of the last four, as the senior guard has helped WCU post a record of 8-2 in such games. Allen enters play on Wednesday night averaging 15.0 points per game, which remains the best on the team, while his 1.9 assists per game are third best on the squad. Josh Walker is tied third on the team in scoring, averaging 10.4 points per game, while his 7.7 rebounds per game (including a 12-rebound effort vs Lock Haven last Saturday) is first on the team. Dylan Blair continues to rank in the top five on the team in scoring, averaging 10.4 points per game as well and 4.3 assists per game, which is sixth-best in the PSAC in the season’s final month. West Chester enters play averaging 77.5 points per game on 42.4 % shooting from the field, including 31.5 % from beyond the arc. The Golden Rams also hold a 42.5-34.8 lead in rebounding, which remains seventh-best in Division II and second-best in the PSAC, including a 16.1 offensive rebound per game average, which is seventh best in the Nation. Today is the final Saturday home game of the regular season for West Chester’s senior class of Allen, Walker, Osumanu, and Walinski. Since joining 2021-22 this quartet, which reached its current level of four in 2022-23 when Walker joined the Golden Rams, is 75-35 overall and 54-26 in PSAC action, which includes the 2022-23 season that saw the Golden Rams go 21-8 and 16-6 in league play, earning a share of their first PSAC East regular season crown since 2006.
Mansfield Men’s Basketball Notes... Mansfield (7-14, 4-11) enters play on Saturday looking to erase the memory of what some may consider a surprising 76-72 home loss at the hands of Bloomsburg on Wednesday night. Mansfield shot just 35.3 % from the field, inlcuding 34.6 % from beyond the arc, but hit a hot-shooting Bloomsburg team, which shot 47.6 % from the field and 45.5 % from deep to overcome a career-high 30 point and 15 rebound double-double by Scott Woodring. For the Year, Mansfield enters play averaging 71.1 points per game on 41.9 % shooting from the field and 30.7 % from beyond the arc, while trailing in the rebounding (41.5-36.6) and turnover (19.0-16.0) battles for the year. Sterling Scott is first on the team in scoring, averaging 13.7 points per game, while Woodring is second, averaging 11.5 per game. Woodring continues to lead the team in rebounding, averaging 7.4 rebounds per game, while Ty Crespo is first on the team in assists, averaging 4.1 per game.
Up Next for the Golden Rams ... Today is the final game of a quick two-game homestand for West Chester, which saw the team host Shepherd to open it on Wednesday night. West Chester will travel to Shippensburg next Wednesday for a 8 p.m. start in its lone game of the week before hosting East Stroudsburg on the 19th at 7:30 p.m.

From late August through early-to-mid March each school year, West Chester University’s cheerleaders are front and center at all Golden Rams football games in the fall and both men’s and women’s basketball games in the winter. Additionally, West Chester University’s cheerleaders have traveled to Orlando, Fla., and the Wide World of Sports in January to compete in the UCA Nationals. The Golden Rams Cheer Squad placed among the top five at UCA Nationals in each of the past four years, including a national championship effort last winter and a runner-up performance in 2023.
The cheerleaders work hard in the preseason learning mostly new material for the upcoming campaign, conditioning and developing a pride in the West Chester University community. Aside from preparing their 35-member team for the year ahead, the West Chester University cheerleaders also host high school clinics in order to develop cheerleading around the area.
The West Chester University cheerleaders take on many community service projects focusing mainly on breast cancer awareness, as well as doing many youth and high school cheering clinics, donating to needy schools and volunteering with the elderly within the West Chester community.
The team also makes many public appearances as representatives of WCU, highlighted each holiday season with a spot in the borough’s annual Christmas Parade.
