Dr. R. Lorraine (Laurie) Bernotsky was unanimously named the 16th president of West Chester University by the Board of Governors of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education (PASSHE), effective July 1, 2024. A longstanding champion for public education and State System students, Dr. Bernotsky is a first-generation college graduate who leads the largest *R2 institution within Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education. Prior to being named president, Dr. Bernotsky held the position of interim president of Pennsylvania Western University (PennWest) as a loaned executive from West Chester University. Known for being a transformative leader in higher education, Dr. Bernotsky is prepared to help West Chester University chart its path toward the next 150 years.
As a collaborative and inclusive leader who is centered on student success, Dr. Bernotsky holds nearly three decades of progressive experience in higher education. She began her career at West Chester University in 1996 as a member of the political science faculty. When the opportunity opened to serve as associate provost and dean of graduate studies at West Chester University, she competed in a national search for the role and served for several years before becoming provost in 2015.
As West Chester University’s provost, Dr. Bernotsky successfully led the University’s Academic Affairs Division, which oversees approximately 850 faculty and is comprised of six colleges, as well as two schools, that offers more than 100 academic degree programs while also housing the Office of Institutional Research, the Center for International Programs (now the Center for Global Engagement), the offices of undergraduate admissions, enrollment management, financial aid, the graduate school, and undergraduate student support services.
Executive vice president was added to Dr. Bernotsky’s role in 2017 and, as the University’s second-in-command, she also assumed leadership of the University’s budget and labor relations function.
Recognized throughout the Commonwealth as a highly respected and effective higher education leader, Dr. Bernotsky was asked by Chancellor Daniel Greenstein to serve PennWest temporarily in the fall of 2022 as executive vice president and chief operating officer, providing guidance and direction in all operational areas. From October 2022 through June 2023, Dr. Bernotsky worked collaboratively in this loaned capacity to help strengthen PennWest’s operational excellence, strategic enrollment management systems, and long-term plans for financial sustainability. The positive effects of Dr. Bernotsky’s work ultimately led to her appointment as interim president of PennWest on July 1, 2023 by PASSHE’s Board of Governors; she assumed the role four months after her appointment as PennWest’s acting president and following the retirement of PennWest founding president, Dr. Dale-Elizabeth Pehrsson.
Terry Beattie begins his ninth athletic campaign as the Director of Athletics at West Chester University and 20th overall as a member of the Golden Rams’ athletic department. Previous to being named the Interim AD in 2017, Beattie served as the Associate AD overseeing facilities and game day operations. He also oversaw all of the grounds and equipment room operations for the athletic department.
A 32-year veteran in college athletics, Beattie recently spearheaded the development of the Michael Horrocks Emerging Leaders Institute at WCU, which provides leadership training and development to a select group of outstanding student athletes who, as recognized future leaders, will be taking on the mantle of leadership within their team sometime in the future.
In his eight years as the university’s athletics director, Beattie created a Sports Performance aspect to the athletic department implementing additional resources from which WCU student-athletes could benefit. His collaboration with a number of other areas on campus gives student-athletes access to mental health and sport psychology experts, an expanded and much improved strength and conditioning program as well as education on sport nutrition.
His work in the field of Sport Leadership Training gives West Chester University’s coaching staff and administrators access to some of the cutting edge research on how to become a better leader, coach and mentor to young adults.
He has also served on a number of strategic planning committee’s both within the athletic department and in conjunction with the university. During his previous 14 years in Southeastern Pennsylvania, Beattie has chaired search committees to replace head coaches and assistant athletic directors while coordinating scheduling for West Chester University’s numerous athletic facilities. He has also served on search committees on the university side.
Beattie supervised the athletic department’s nine on-campus facilities, including both John A. Farrell Stadium and Serpico Stadium as well as Vonnie Gros Field.
A member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), Beattie was recently named the chair of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Athletic Administrators for the 2023-24 campaign. He has also served roles on the NCAA regional and national advisory committees overseeing selections to the NCAA Division II Tournament in a variety of sports.

Opening Tip... After opening the new month with a victory for the third month in a row, the West Chester University women’s basketball team will look to start a new winning streak on Wednesday night as the Golden Rams welcome Shepherd to Hollinger Field House for a 5:30 p.m. tip. West Chester is 40-13 (.755) at home since November 2021, and to take it a step further, the Golden Rams are 34-6 (.850) at home since November 22, which includes the team’s 27-game winning streak at home, which was halted in December after starting in January 2023. West Chester is 7-7 all-time against Shepherd after winning each of the last five meetings against the Rams, dating back to January of the 2023 season. West Chester sparked its winning streak with a 94-47 win over Shepherd on January 23 of that season and evened the series at 7-7 with a 68-60 win in West Virginia on January 3 in the team’s PSAC East opener. During this fivegame streak, West Chester has won by 10 or more in four of five games, including an 82-27 demolition of Shepherd in January 2024.
WCU Women’s Basketball Notes ...Looking to halt a three-game losing streak to end January, West Chester opened the new month with a dominant 58-43 victory over Lock Haven on Saturday afternoon in Thomas Field House. West Chester picked up its first road win at Lock Haven since January of the 2022-23 season after shooting an excellent 44.2 % (23-of-52) from the field, including a season-best 55.6 % (5-of-9) from beyond the arc while also limiting Lock Haven to an opponent season-low 43 points on just 26.3 % (15-of-57) shooting from the field. West Chester trailed for less than 90 seconds early in the first quarter before stretching its lead to as many as 16 in the waning seconds of regulation. Michelle Kozicki notched her 13th double-double of the year and sixth in as many games as she led the team in scoring and rebounding with 21 points and 11 rebounds, while Erin Daley added 18 points on 7-of-8 shooting, including a 3-for-4 effort from three-point range in the victory. Kozicki ranks second in the PSAC in scoring, averaging 21.1 points per game, while her 10.3 rebounds per game are fifth best in the league. The senior forward has 13 double-doubles to her name, including six in as many games, which ranks her in a tie for fourth in D2 in double-doubles while also ranking second in the PSAC. Emily Chmiel leads the PSAC and D2 in double-doubles with 16. Kozicki has also scored 35 points twice since December 17, becoming the first player to score 35 or more twice in the same season since Leah Johnson, who, along with Mitzi Reitnouer, are the only two Golden Rams to accomplish this feat. Anna McTamney is second on the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging 15.7 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. McTamney is eighth in the league in scoring, making West Chester the only team to place two players in the top 10 in the league in scoring. Ranking third on the team in scoring, Bella Mazur has been a great addition to the Golden Ram lineup in her rookie campaign, averaging 9.0 points per game thanks in part to a stretch that saw her turn in six double-digit scoring efforts in eight games and seven such efforts in nine home games this season. As a team, West Chester averages 66.8 points per game on 39.6 % shooting from the field and 26.6 % from three-point range. West Chester also leads the PSAC and ranks fifth in Division II in free throw shooting, connecting on 79.8 % of its attempts at the stripe.
Shepherd Women’s Basketball Notes...Shepherd (4-17, 1-13) suffered its ninth loss in a row on Saturday at home against East Stroudsburg by a 58-47 final. Shepherd held an 18-16 lead at the end of the first quarter and trailed by just one heading into the half but was outscored 14-4 in the third quarter and could not recover late in the 11-point setback. Shepherd shot just 33.3 % (19-of-57) from the field, including 10.0 % (2-of-20) from beyond the arc, while also finding itself on the wrong end of a 43-35 margin on the glass. Samiyah Nasir scored 14 points, while Lamaria Estridge led the team in rebounds (six) and assists (two). For the year, Shepherd averages 61.2 points per game on 37.5 % shooting from the field and 26.9 % from beyond the arc. With losses in each of its last nine dating back to a PSAC East opening loss to West Chester on January 3, the youthful Shepherd team has hit tough times in 2025. The Rams trail 41.0-37.1 on the glass and 24.4-19.9 in the turnover battle, averaging just 9.6 steals per game. Individually, Kara Wehner leads the team in scoring and assists, averaging 9.5 points and 2.8 assists per game, while Carmaya Bowman is first in rebounding, averaging 5.7 rebounds per game.
Up Next for the Golden Rams ... Today is the first game of a two-game homestand for West Chester, its final such homestand of the 2024-25 regular season. West Chester remains home Saturday afternoon to face Mansfield on Senior Day at 1 p.m. before visiting Shippensburg next Wednesday in its lone game of the week. West Chester will conclude its regular-season home slate on February 19 and 26 vs. rivals East Stroudsburg and Millersville.

Opening Tip... As the Golden Rams continue to receive votes in both the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and D2SIDA National polls, West Chester prepares to renew its rivalry with Shepherd on Wednesday night in Hollinger Field House beginning at 7:30 p.m. Head coach Damien Blair looks to continue his march to 300 career wins this afternoon as he enters play just two wins away from becoming the second West Chester men’s basketball coach to accomplish this feat with the lone other being legendary head coach Dick DeLaney, who the Hollinger Field House floor now bears the name of alongside legendary women’s basketball head coach Deirdre Kane. West Chester will look to run its winning streak against Shepherd to nine in a row on Wednesday night when the Rams visit Hollinger Field House for the second game of the season series against the Golden Rams. Currently, on an eight-game winning streak, West Chester has broken open a series that was once close at 4-3 and taken firm command of it with sweeps of the regular season series in each of the last two seasons with a pair of PSAC Tournament wins during that same time. The streak has not always been easy for West Chester, as it includes an OT win at Shepherd last February and a pair of buzzer-beating wins over the Rams during the 2022-23 season. West Chester will also be looking to remain unbeaten at home this season, entering play a perfect 10-0 in Hollinger in the midst of a 14-game home winning streak, which is the best in the PSAC and tied for fifth-best in Division II men’s basketball.
WCU Men’s Basketball Notes ... West Chester avoided its first two-game losing streak since the first weekend of the season on Saturday with a 75-56 victory over Lock Haven. Led by 17 points from Elijah Allen and 15 from Davante Dennis, West Chester trailed for less than five minutes and opened up a commanding 19-point lead in the final moments of regulation to leave Thomas Field House with a victory. West Chester shot 42.0 % (29-of-69) from the field in the victory, including a 35.0 % (7-of-20) effort from three-point range and finished the game with three in double figures as Anthony McCall chipped in 12 points off the bench on 5-of-8 shooting. Elijah Allen has scored in double figures in 16 of his 20 games this year and led West Chester in scoring in 10 of those 16, including each of the last three, as the senior guard has helped WCU post a record of 8-2 in such games. Allen enters play on Wednesday night averaging 15.4 points per game, which remains the best on the team, while his 2.0 assists per game are third best on the squad. Josh Walker is third on the team in scoring, averaging 10.7 points per game, while his 7.7 rebounds per game (including a 12-rebound effort vs Lock Haven on Saturday) is first on the team. Dylan Blair continues to rank in the top five on the team in scoring, averaging 10.6 points per game and 4.4 assists per game, which is sixth-best in the PSAC entering the season’s final month. West Chester enters play averaging 78.5 points per game on 43.1 % shooting from the field, including 32.2 % from beyond the arc. The Golden Rams also hold a 42.6-34.4 lead in rebounding, which remains seventh-best in Division II and second-best in the PSAC, including a 16.2 offensive rebound per game average, which is sixth best on the team.
Shepherd Men’s Basketball Notes... Shepherd (14-7, 10-4) enters play looking to bounce back from a loss at the hands of East Stroudsburg on Saturday by a 71-70 final. The Rams held a seven-point lead at the half, but the visiting Warriors put together an excellent second half, outscoring their hosts 42-34 to escape West Virginia with a one-point victory. Shepherd shot 49.0 % from the field in the setback, including a 26.7 % effort from deep, hitting four threes, while also ending the game shooting 78.3 % at the line. Marcus Banks led the team in points, rebounding, and assists, finishing with 19 points, six rebounds, and five assists in the setback. Graduate student Chase Paar leads Shepherd in scoring (13.2/g) and rebounds (7.7/g), while Marcus Banks is second on the team in scoring, averaging 11.8 points per game, while his 3.8 assists per game are first on the squad. As a team, Shepherd enters play averaging 67.5 points per game on 43.0 % shooting from the field and 30.9 % from beyond the arc while also outrebounding opponents by 39.1-32.6 (+6.5) margin on the year, which helps the Rams manage a 16.7-13.3 deficit in the turnover battle entering the final weeks of the regular season.
Up Next for the Golden Rams ... Today is the first game of a two-game homestand for West Chester, its final such homestand of the 2024-25 regular season. From late August through early-to-mid March each school year, West Chester University’s cheerleaders are front and center at all Golden Rams football games in the fall and both men’s and women’s basketball games in the winter. Additionally, West Chester University’s cheerleaders have traveled to Orlando, Fla., and the Wide World of Sports in January to compete in the UCA Nationals. The Golden Rams Cheer Squad placed among the top five at UCA Nationals in each of the past four years, including a national championship effort last winter and a runner-up performance in 2023.
The cheerleaders work hard in the preseason learning mostly new material for the upcoming campaign, conditioning and developing a pride in the West Chester University community. Aside from preparing their 35-member team for the year ahead, the West Chester University cheerleaders also host high school clinics in order to develop cheerleading around the area.
The West Chester University cheerleaders take on many community service projects focusing mainly on breast cancer awareness, as well as doing many youth and high school cheering clinics, donating to needy schools and volunteering with the elderly within the West Chester community.
The team also makes many public appearances as representatives of WCU, highlighted each holiday season with a spot in the borough’s annual Christmas Parade.
