University and Athletic Administration University President Dr. Christopher

Dr. Christopher M. Fiorentino enters his eighth and final year as president of West Chester University. With 40 years of higher education and administration experience at West Chester University, Fiorentino announced his retirement prior to the beginning of the 2023-24 academic year. He will step down as university president in June 2024. Fiorentino, who holds three degrees in economics (baccalaureate, master’s and doctorate) from Temple University, joined WCU’s economics faculty in 1983. His role evolved from assistant professor to dean of the College of Business and Public Administration to vice president for External Operations to his current position of university president. Dr. Fiorentino has been active in numerous leadership roles on campus, helping to secure AACSB International accreditation for the School of Business; developing off-campus academic centers, including the Graduate Center in West Goshen Township; and working with faculty and supporters to create the Cottrell Entrepreneurial Leadership Center. Dr. Fiorentino also spearheaded the development of the Center for Community Solutions, which links business and civic leaders with appropriate University faculty and staff. His responsibilities in his last position included University operations at the State System’s Center City Philadelphia site. Dr. Fiorentino is married to WCU alumnae, Dr. Susan Fiorentino, ’86, a Professor in the Management Department at West Chester University where she is currently serving as Coordinator for the Master of Science in Human Resource Management program. The Fiorentinos have three children: Greg, a software engineer and WCU alum; Diana Marlin, a WCU grad and registered dietitian; and Jeff, a Penn State University graduate.

Director of Athletics Terry Beattie

Terry Beattie begins his eighth athletic campaign as the Director of Athletics at West Chester University. Overall, Beattie enters into his 18th season with West Chester University’s Department of Athletics. Previous to being named the Interim AD in 2017, Beattie served as the Associate AD overseeing facilities and game day operations. He also oversaw all of the grounds and equipment room operations for the athletic department. A 31-year veteran in college athletics, Beattie recently spearheaded the development of the Michael Horrocks Emerging Leaders Institute at WCU, which provides leadership training and development to a select group of outstanding student athletes who, as recognized future leaders, will be taking on the mantle of leadership within their team sometime in the future. He has also served on a number of strategic planning committee’s both within the athletic department and in conjunction with the university. In his seven years as the university’s athletics director, Beattie created a Sports Performance aspect to the athletic department implementing additional resources from which WCU student-athletes could benefit. His collaboration with a number of other areas on campus gives student-athletes access to mental health and sport psychology experts, an expanded and much improved strength and conditioning program as well as education on sport nutrition. His work in the field of Sport Leadership Training gives West Chester University’s coaching staff and administrators access to some of the cutting edge research on how to become a better leader, coach and mentor to young adults. A member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), Beattie was recently named the chair of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Athletic Administrators for the 2023-24 campaign. He has also served roles on the NCAA regional and national advisory committees overseeing selections to the NCAA Division II Tournament in a variety of sports. A native of Rochester, N.Y., Beattie has an extensive background in college athletics dating back to 1991. Beattie, 54, is 1991 graduate of Alfred University in Alfred, N.Y., with a degree in Business Administration. He completed his master’s degree in Sport Administration at Canisius College in 1999. He received a tenured promotion to Assistant Professor at West Chester University in April 2009.

Head Coach: Janice Washington

Career Record: (44-19)

Opening Tip...Off to a 6-1 start to the year, the West Chester University women’s basketball team has impressed through the first month of the season, picking up five of its six victories by 20 points or more while remaining unbeaten at home. West Chester has trailed for just over 16 minutes at home this season, leading wire-to-wire in three of its six home games. Today, West Chester will play its final non-league game of the year against local rival Lincoln, looking to halt a three-game losing streak against the Lions. When the series began in 2007, West Chester won each of the first four meetings, holding Lincoln under 45 points in all of those matchups. The series has turned in recent years, with Lincoln winning four of the last five, including a 76-67 victory in Hollinger last season. In Hollinger last year, West Chester led for much of the game, but it was a 16-7 third-quarter effort by the Lions, which carried Lincoln to the nine-point victory over the Golden Rams. Emily McAteer led the way in this matchup, finishing with 21 points and 15 rebounds, while Anyssa Fields finished with 29 points on 12-of-15 shooting to lead Lincoln. WCU Women’s Basketball Notes ... West Chester enters play on Tuesday night after two victories over the weekend against Slippery Rock and Edinboro, posting an 83-51 win over the Rock before downing Edinboro by a 79-55 final on Saturday afternoon. On Saturday, West Chester got off to a slow start offensively, shooting just 2-of-10 from the field to open the game, but found its way as the quarter progressed, taking a 17-15 lead into the second quarter. West Chester ended the first half on a run and continued this effort to open the second half, stretching the lead to 48-30 with 7:29 to play in the third quarter. With a solid lead intact early in the second half, West Chester never struggled down the stretch, eventually earning the 24-point victory. Leah Johnson scored a season-high 27 points in the win, while Emily McAteer finished with a double-double, scoring 13 points and adding 13 rebounds on Saturday afternoon. West Chester has been difficult to crack defensively this season, holding opponents to an average of just 54.0 points per game, which ranks second in the PSAC and 13th in Division II women’s basketball. West Chester also ranks fifth in Division II in three-point percentage defense, holding opponents to just 20.4 % shooting from beyond the arc. Johnson leads the team in scoring entering play on Tuesday, averaging 14.3 points per game, while McAteer averages 13.9 points per game along with 7.6 rebounds per game, which also ranks first on the team. Lincoln Women’s Basketball Notes... For its part, Lincoln enters play after a 103-52 drubbing of Cheyney in Manuel Rivero Gymnasium on Friday night. This victory halted a two-game losing streak for the Lions, as the team had previously fallen to nationally ranked foes California (Pa.) and Jefferson. Anyssa Fields, who led the Lions to victory over the Golden Rams when they met a year ago, has been sharp to open the 2023-24 season, averaging a team-best 11.3 points per game, while Ciani Montgomery is second on the team in scoring, averaging 11.0 points per game. Fields also ranks in a tie for first on the team in rebounding, averaging 5.3 rebounds per game, while Montgomery leads the team in assists, averaging 3.8 helpers per game. Third-year head coach Janice Washington has done an excellent job with the Lions in her tenure at the helm, guiding them to a record of 44-19 as head coach, including a 3-2 start to the 2023-24 season. As a team, Lincoln comes into play on Tuesday night averaging 64.3 points per game, shooting 39.3 % from the field and 31.3 % from three-point territory, while also averaging 36.3 rebounds per game, entering play with a +3.5-rebounding margin on the season. The defense has been the calling card for Lincoln this season, holding opponents to 65.0 points per game and coming away with 14.0 steals per, which helps the visitors enter play with a +0.5 (21.5-21.0) advantage in the turnover battle. Up next for the Golden Rams ... West Chester plays its final home game until December 30 tonight against Lincoln as the team will head to Erie, Pennsylvania, in just under two weeks to take on Mercyhurst and Gannon in crossover action on December 18 and 19, beginning at 5:30 p.m. When West Chester returns from Erie, the Golden Rams will have a bit of downtime for the holidays before hosting Clarion on December 30 in its final game of the 2023 half of the schedule.

The former Golden Rams standout won the most games by any WCU women’s head coach over their first five years running the program and landed her charges in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament all five times while adding an NCAA Tournament appearance three times. Wooden’ brings an overall record of 136-97 (.584) into the 2023-24 campaign and an 107-69 (.619) mark against conference competition. Additionally, Wooden shows a 6-7 record in the PSAC Tournament and a 2-4 record in her four trips to the NCAA Atlantic Regional. In 2022-23, Wooden engineered one of the most impressive year-to-year turnarounds in program history, leading West Chester to a share of its first PSAC East Regular Season title since 2017-18, a PSAC Tournament Semifinal appearance, its first NCAA Tournament win in 20 years, and its first Regional Championship appearance in program history. Ending the year with a record of 24-9, which is tied for the most wins Wooden has recorded in a single season since her first year in 2014-15 when the team went 24-6, the Golden Rams returned to the NCAA Tournament as a three seed, the team’s highest seeding since the field expanded to 64 teams in 2003. Wooden, who was named PSAC East Coach of the Year for the second time in her career, mentored four All-Conference honorees, including first-team selections Leah Johnson and Emily McAteer, along with second-team honorees Anna McTamney and PSAC East Defensive Player of the Year Michelle Kozicki. With her Defensive Player of the Year honors, Kozicki became the first Golden Ram to receive this award since Alexandra Lennon in the 2012-13 season. As a team, West Chester boasted one of the top offensive units in the PSAC, averaging 72.8 points per game, thanks to a 44.2 % field goal percentage and a program DII record 77.2 % free-throw shooting percentage. She could not have set the bar any higher for herself, after leading West Chester to a combined 45-14 record in her first two campaigns. The WCU alumnae has picked up three PSAC East title (2016, 2018, 2023), a spot in the PSAC Championship Game (2015) and four trips to the NCAA Tournament (2015, 2016, 2018, 2023) in her first 10 seasons at the helm. The Wilmington, Del., native played all four years at WCU under Deirdre Kane, earning PSAC Eastern Division first team honors on three different occasions. During her first season in 1999-2000, Wooden, who played under her maiden name, Kiera Manlove, was named the PSAC East Rookie of the Year. Wooden was named the team’s MVP on three different occasions and claimed outstanding scholar-athlete honors twice. She currently ranks fifth all-time in scoring with 1,378 points and stands 11th in scoring average at 12.2 points per game. Wooden holds the school record for field goals made (569), ranks fourth in field goal attempts (1,300), sixth in free throws made (240) and fourth in free throws attempted (408). Wooden also ranks second all-time in WCU history in rebounds (871) and third in steals (259) while her 7.7 rebounds per game average stands fifth. Wooden, a 2003 graduate of West Chester University with a degree in Exercise Science/Kiniesiology and three minors (Nutrition, Health, Coaching) went on to earn her master’s degree in Sports and Athletic Administration at West Chester University in 2006.
