University and Athletic Administration

University President Director of Athletics

Dr. Lorraine Bernotsky Terry Beattie

Dr. R. Lorraine (Laurie) Bernotsky was unanimously named the 16th president of West Chester University by the Board of Governors of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education (PASSHE), effective July 1, 2024. A longstanding champion for public education and State System students, Dr. Bernotsky is a first-generation college graduate who leads the largest *R2 institution within Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education. Prior to being named president, Dr. Bernotsky held the position of interim president of Pennsylvania Western University (PennWest) as a loaned executive from West Chester University. Known for being a transformative leader in higher education, Dr. Bernotsky is prepared to help West Chester University chart its path toward the next 150 years.

As a collaborative and inclusive leader who is centered on student success, Dr. Bernotsky holds nearly three decades of progressive experience in higher education. She began her career at West Chester University in 1996 as a member of the political science faculty. When the opportunity opened to serve as associate provost and dean of graduate studies at West Chester University, she competed in a national search for the role and served for several years before becoming provost in 2015.

As West Chester University’s provost, Dr. Bernotsky successfully led the University’s Academic Affairs Division, which oversees approximately 850 faculty and is comprised of six colleges, as well as two schools, that offers more than 100 academic degree programs while also housing the Office of Institutional Research, the Center for International Programs (now the Center for Global Engagement), the offices of undergraduate admissions, enrollment management, financial aid, the graduate school, and undergraduate student support services.

Executive vice president was added to Dr. Bernotsky’s role in 2017 and, as the University’s second-in-command, she also assumed leadership of the University’s budget and labor relations function.

Recognized throughout the Commonwealth as a highly respected and effective higher education leader, Dr. Bernotsky was asked by Chancellor Daniel Greenstein to serve PennWest temporarily in the fall of 2022 as executive vice president and chief operating officer, providing guidance and direction in all operational areas. From October 2022 through June 2023, Dr. Bernotsky worked collaboratively in this loaned capacity to help strengthen PennWest’s operational excellence, strategic enrollment management systems, and long-term plans for financial sustainability. The positive effects of Dr. Bernotsky’s work ultimately led to her appointment as interim president of PennWest on July 1, 2023 by PASSHE’s Board of Governors; she assumed the role four months after her appointment as PennWest’s acting president and following the retirement of PennWest founding president, Dr. Dale-Elizabeth Pehrsson.

Terry Beattie begins his ninth athletic campaign as the Director of Athletics at West Chester University and 20th overall as a member of the Golden Rams’ athletic department. Previous to being named the Interim AD in 2017, Beattie served as the Associate AD overseeing facilities and game day operations. He also oversaw all of the grounds and equipment room operations for the athletic department.

A 32-year veteran in college athletics, Beattie recently spearheaded the development of the Michael Horrocks Emerging Leaders Institute at WCU, which provides leadership training and development to a select group of outstanding student athletes who, as recognized future leaders, will be taking on the mantle of leadership within their team sometime in the future.

In his eight years as the university’s athletics director, Beattie created a Sports Performance aspect to the athletic department implementing additional resources from which WCU student-athletes could benefit. His collaboration with a number of other areas on campus gives student-athletes access to mental health and sport psychology experts, an expanded and much improved strength and conditioning program as well as education on sport nutrition.

His work in the field of Sport Leadership Training gives West Chester University’s coaching staff and administrators access to some of the cutting edge research on how to become a better leader, coach and mentor to young adults.

He has also served on a number of strategic planning committee’s both within the athletic department and in conjunction with the university. During his previous 14 years in Southeastern Pennsylvania, Beattie has chaired search committees to replace head coaches and assistant athletic directors while coordinating scheduling for West Chester University’s numerous athletic facilities. He has also served on search committees on the university side.

Beattie supervised the athletic department’s nine on-campus facilities, including both John A. Farrell Stadium and Serpico Stadium as well as Vonnie Gros Field.

A member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), Beattie was recently named the chair of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Athletic Administrators for the 2023-24 campaign. He has also served roles on the NCAA regional and national advisory committees overseeing selections to the NCAA Division II Tournament in a variety of sports.

SHIPPENSBURG (7-9, 4-6)

Head Coach: Kristy Trn Career Record: (416-289)

Opening Tip... After going 3-3 in December to end 2024 with a record of 4-8 overall and 1-4 in league play, West Chester has caught fire to open 2025, winning three of its four games of the New Year and each of the last two, including a 77-72 overtime victory at East Stroudsburg and a 68-58 victory over Kutztown on Alumni Day last Saturday afternoon. West Chester will look to return to 5-5 in league action and improve to 8-9 overall on Saturday afternoon when it renews its rivalry with Shippensburg on Saturday afternoon beginning at 1 p.m. in Hollinger Field House. West Chester is 38-31 all-time vs Shippensburg, including wins in each of its last three meetings and a sweep of the season series a year ago. West Chester triumphed by an 82-55 final on the road in the first meeting between the two rivals in January of last year before winning the series finale by a 64-59 final in Hollinger last February. The Golden Rams five-point win in Hollinger was the team’s first home win over Shippensburg since January 8, 2020, and the team’s first three-game winning streak against the Raiders since winning three in a row between December 2014 and March 2015. West Chester has not won more than three in a row over Shippensburg since an eight-game winning streak that stretched from February 2009 through February 2012.

Happening Pregame... Before this afternoon’s game, West Chester plans to honor Anna McTamney with a second commemorative basketball in recognition of her 1000th point at WCU. McTamney scored her 1000th point as a Golden Ram with the first basket of the second quarter in Saturday’s 68-58 victory over Kutztown, which was two of her 11 points after being held scoreless in the first quarter.

WCU Women’s Basketball Notes ...West Chester (7-9, 4-5) wrapped up a busy four-game, eight-day stretch with a 3-1 record after defeating Kutztown on Alumni Day by a 68-58 final in front of a great Hollinger Field House crowd. West Chester led by as many as 20 late in the first half and carried a 12-point lead into the break but needed a final stand in the final four minutes of the fourth quarter to escape with the 10-point victory. Led by a career-high 19 points from Erin Daley and the eighth double-double of the year by Michelle Kozicki (11 pts/11 rebs), West Chester improved to 7-9 overall and 4-6 in league play with its third win of the new year and second win in a row. West Chester shot 43.1 % (22-of-51) from the field and 35.7 % (5-of-14) from deep while also going 19-for-24 (79.2 %) at the line, including a 12-for-15 (80.0 %) effort at the line in the fourth quarter to stretch a three-point lead with four minutes to play into a 10-point victory. Kozicki ranks second in the PSAC in scoring, averaging 20.5 points per game, while her 10.1 rebounds per game is fifth best in the league. The senior forward has eight double-doubles to her name, including four in the last six games, which ranks her in a tie for eighth in D2 in double-doubles while also ranking in a tie for second in the PSAC with Mia Kalich of Seton Hill. Emily Chmiel leads the PSAC and D2 in double-doubles with 11 to start the season. Anna McTamney, whom West Chester plans on honoring before the game on Saturday for her 1000th point as a Golden Ram, is second on the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging 16.0 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. McTamney is eighth in the league in scoring, making West Chester one of just two teams (Seton Hill being the lone other) to place two players in the top 10 in the league in scoring. Ranking third on the team in scoring, Bella Mazur has been a great addition to the Golden Ram lineup in her rookie campaign, averaging 9.5 points per game thanks in part to five double-digit scoring efforts in six games and six such efforts in seven home games this season. As a team, West Chester averages 67.4 points per game on 39.7 % shooting from the field and 26.5 % from three-point range. West Chester also leads the PSAC and ranks third in Division II in free throw shooting, connecting on 81.3 % of its attempts at the stripe.

Shippensburg Women’s Basketball Notes...Shippensburg (7-9, 4-6) enters play coming off a hard-fought victory over East Stroudsburg on Wednesday night as the Raiders stormed back for a 70-69 win over the visiting Warriors. In the win over ESU, Shippensburg trailed by eight points entering the fourth quarter but outscored its guests 26-17 in the final frame, shooting 57.1 % (8-of-14) from the field in the final 10 minutes to escape with the one-point win. Colbert played the full 40 minutes in the victory and scored 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting, including a 3-for-4 effort from deep, while Michelle Olak added 14 points off the bench on 5-of-6 shooting. Shippensburg shot 46.4 % (26-of-56) from the field in the win, including a 31.3 % (5-of-16) effort from deep, while also going 13-for-15 (86.7 %) at the line. As a team, Shippensburg averages 59.9 points per game on 37.3 % shooting from the field, including a 25.7 % effort from deep and 73.0 % shooting from the line, led by a 10.9 per game scoring average by Taja Colbert and 9.3 points per game from Bella Chimienti. Senior forward Abbie Miller leads the team in rebounding, averaging 7.2 rebounds per game, and ranks third in scoring, averaging 8.3 points per game. Colbert is first on the team in assists, averaging 3.1 per game, while Miller also leads the team in steals, averaging 1.7 per game.

Up Next for the Golden Rams ... Today is West Chester’s first game since its 10-point win over Kutztown last Saturday. The Golden Rams will end their homestand today and visit Mansfield on Wednesday night before hosting Bloomsburg on Saturday, January 25th, in their final home game until a February 5 date with Shepherd.

Head Coach: Chris Fite

Career Record: (189-122)

Opening Tip... As the Golden Rams continue to receive votes in both the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and D2SIDA National polls, West Chester prepares to renew its rivalry with Shippensburg on Saturday afternoon in Hollinger Field House beginning at 3 p.m. After opening the New Year by playing four games in eight days, West Chester had a well-deserved bye on Wednesday, giving the Golden Rams a chance to be well-rested entering play against the Raiders on Saturday afternoon. West Chester will look to run its winning streak against Shippensburg to three in a row and stretch its overall winning streak to two while also improving to 9-0 in Hollinger against Shippensburg on Saturday afternoon. West Chester swept the season series last year for the first time since the 201516 season, which was part of a three-game winning streak for the Golden Rams. Last season included a dominant 102-59 victory at home in late February, which improved West Chester to 75-37 all-time against the Raiders. This win went down as the Golden Rams largest win over Shippensburg since a 100-54 victory in 1972, and the Golden Rams largest PSAC East win since a 107-63 thrashing of Millersville during the 2017-18 season.

WCU Men’s Basketball Notes ... Looking to erase the memory of a 77-68 loss at ESU on January 8, which was the team’s first loss in nearly two months, West Chester (13-3, 8-1) returned home on Saturday and vanquished Kutztown by an 85-80 final. West Chester led by 13 midway through the first half and led for over 38 minutes but found itself trailing by one late in the second half after a jumper with just under seven minutes to play. West Chester did not trail for long, regaining a four-point lead, and the Golden Rams never trailed again in the victory. Dylan Blair led West Chester with 16 points and 10 assists as WCU shot 52.6 % from the field and 31.6% from three-point range. West Chester also hit 19-of-29 (65.5 %) at the line and ended the game with a 19-14 lead in turnovers. This +5 lead in turnovers helped West Chester end the game with a 24-9 lead in points off turnovers and a 42-38 lead in points in the paint. West Chester’s bench ranks fourth in the league in scoring, averaging 23.4 points per game after scoring 32 points on Saturday, led by 14 from Anthony Purnell Jr. and seven more from Alex Walinski. West Chester has been led by Elijah Allen, who averages 15.0 points and 1.9 assists per game. Joshua Walker has caught fire in recent weeks after missing time due to injury early in the season, averaging 11.4 points per game, which is second best on the team, while also leading the squad in rebounding, averaging 7.5 rebounds per game, including his 16-point effort at ESU on Wednesday night. Army-West Point transfer Dylan Blair has also seemed to find his footing in recent weeks as the sophomore guard now averages 10.9 points per game, which is third best on the team, along with 4.1 assists per game, which is first on the team and among the best in the PSAC. This 4.1 assist per game average includes Blair’s 10 helpers in the win over Kutztown on Saturday as the sophomore guard became the first Golden Ram since Anthony Purnell Jr. in January 2024 against Shepherd to record 10 or more assists in a single game. West Chester is second in the PSAC and ranks fifth in DII in rebounding, averaging 43.4 rebounds per game, including a 16.7 offensive-rebound per game average, which is fourth best in Division II men’s basketball entering the final two months of the 2024-25 regular season.

Shippensburg Men’s Basketball Notes... Shippensburg (6-10, 4-6) enters play following a hard-fought overtime loss at the hands of East Stroudsburg at home on Wednesday night. Looking for an upset win, Shippensburg held a one-point (48-47) lead at the halftime break but mustered just 31 points in the second half and only eight in OT to suffer a 90-87 loss to ESU. One of the top scorers in the PSAC, Markus Frank, scored 33 points, while Denzel Figueroa grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Raiders in the setback. Shippensburg shot 51.5 % from the field, including a 38.5 % effort from deep, but was outrebounded 48-34 and committed 16 turnovers in the three-point loss. As a team, Shippensburg averages 78.1 points per game on 47.4 % shooting from the field, including a 30.9 % effort from deep, while also shooting 69.3 % at the line. The Raiders hold a slim 38.6-38.2 lead in rebounding on the year, although they trail by just over three turnovers per game, committing an average of 14.5 per game while forcing just 11.2 per game. Individually, Frank leads the team in scoring, averaging 20.8 per game, while Donovan Hill is first in rebounding, averaging 10.4 per game. Freshman guard Jaydon Smith led the team in assists on Wednesday night with five and leads the group on the season, averaging 2.7 per game, while Hill is second, averaging 2.6 per game.

Up Next for the Golden Rams ... Today is the final game of a quick two-game homestand for West Chester. The Golden Rams will visit Mansfield next Wednesday before hosting Bloomsburg on Saturday, January 25, in their final home game until a February 5 matchup against Shepherd.

2024-25 West Chester University Cheerleaders

From late August through early-to-mid March each school year, West Chester University’s cheerleaders are front and center at all Golden Rams football games in the fall and both men’s and women’s basketball games in the winter. Additionally, West Chester University’s cheerleaders have traveled to Orlando, Fla., and the Wide World of Sports in January to compete in the UCA Nationals. The Golden Rams Cheer Squad placed among the top five at UCA Nationals in each of the past four years, including a national championship effort last winter and a runner-up performance in 2023.

The cheerleaders work hard in the preseason learning mostly new material for the upcoming campaign, conditioning and developing a pride in the West Chester University community. Aside from preparing their 35-member team for the year ahead, the West Chester University cheerleaders also host high school clinics in order to develop cheerleading around the area.

The West Chester University cheerleaders take on many community service projects focusing mainly on breast cancer awareness, as well as doing many youth and high school cheering clinics, donating to needy schools and volunteering with the elderly within the West Chester community.

The team also makes many public appearances as representatives of WCU, highlighted each holiday season with a spot in the borough’s annual Christmas Parade.
