Dr. R. Lorraine (Laurie) Bernotsky was unanimously named the 16th president of West Chester University by the Board of Governors of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education (PASSHE), effective July 1, 2024. A longstanding champion for public education and State System students, Dr. Bernotsky is a first-generation college graduate who leads the largest *R2 institution within Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education. Prior to being named president, Dr. Bernotsky held the position of interim president of Pennsylvania Western University (PennWest) as a loaned executive from West Chester University. Known for being a transformative leader in higher education, Dr. Bernotsky is prepared to help West Chester University chart its path toward the next 150 years.
As a collaborative and inclusive leader who is centered on student success, Dr. Bernotsky holds nearly three decades of progressive experience in higher education. She began her career at West Chester University in 1996 as a member of the political science faculty. When the opportunity opened to serve as associate provost and dean of graduate studies at West Chester University, she competed in a national search for the role and served for several years before becoming provost in 2015.
As West Chester University’s provost, Dr. Bernotsky successfully led the University’s Academic Affairs Division, which oversees approximately 850 faculty and is comprised of six colleges, as well as two schools, that offers more than 100 academic degree programs while also housing the Office of Institutional Research, the Center for International Programs (now the Center for Global Engagement), the offices of undergraduate admissions, enrollment management, financial aid, the graduate school, and undergraduate student support services.
Executive vice president was added to Dr. Bernotsky’s role in 2017 and, as the University’s second-in-command, she also assumed leadership of the University’s budget and labor relations function.
Recognized throughout the Commonwealth as a highly respected and effective higher education leader, Dr. Bernotsky was asked by Chancellor Daniel Greenstein to serve PennWest temporarily in the fall of 2022 as executive vice president and chief operating officer, providing guidance and direction in all operational areas. From October 2022 through June 2023, Dr. Bernotsky worked collaboratively in this loaned capacity to help strengthen PennWest’s operational excellence, strategic enrollment management systems, and long-term plans for financial sustainability. The positive effects of Dr. Bernotsky’s work ultimately led to her appointment as interim president of PennWest on July 1, 2023 by PASSHE’s Board of Governors; she assumed the role four months after her appointment as PennWest’s acting president and following the retirement of PennWest founding president, Dr. Dale-Elizabeth Pehrsson.
Terry Beattie begins his ninth athletic campaign as the Director of Athletics at West Chester University and 20th overall as a member of the Golden Rams’ athletic department. Previous to being named the Interim AD in 2017, Beattie served as the Associate AD overseeing facilities and game day operations. He also oversaw all of the grounds and equipment room operations for the athletic department.
A 32-year veteran in college athletics, Beattie recently spearheaded the development of the Michael Horrocks Emerging Leaders Institute at WCU, which provides leadership training and development to a select group of outstanding student athletes who, as recognized future leaders, will be taking on the mantle of leadership within their team sometime in the future.
In his eight years as the university’s athletics director, Beattie created a Sports Performance aspect to the athletic department implementing additional resources from which WCU student-athletes could benefit. His collaboration with a number of other areas on campus gives student-athletes access to mental health and sport psychology experts, an expanded and much improved strength and conditioning program as well as education on sport nutrition.
His work in the field of Sport Leadership Training gives West Chester University’s coaching staff and administrators access to some of the cutting edge research on how to become a better leader, coach and mentor to young adults.
He has also served on a number of strategic planning committee’s both within the athletic department and in conjunction with the university. During his previous 14 years in Southeastern Pennsylvania, Beattie has chaired search committees to replace head coaches and assistant athletic directors while coordinating scheduling for West Chester University’s numerous athletic facilities. He has also served on search committees on the university side.
Beattie supervised the athletic department’s nine on-campus facilities, including both John A. Farrell Stadium and Serpico Stadium as well as Vonnie Gros Field.
A member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), Beattie was recently named the chair of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Athletic Administrators for the 2023-24 campaign. He has also served roles on the NCAA regional and national advisory committees overseeing selections to the NCAA Division II Tournament in a variety of sports.

Opening Tip... After a season-best three-game winning streak and winning four of five to open the New Year, the West Chester University women’s basketball team will look to get back in the win column and return to .500 in East play on Saturday afternoon when Bloomsburg visits Hollinger for the Golden Rams final January home game. West Chester is 40-12 (.769) at home since November 2021, and to take it a step further, the Golden Rams are 34-5 (.871) at home since November 22, which includes the team’s 27-game winning streak at home, which was halted in December after starting in January 2023. West Chester is 44-45 all-time vs Bloomsburg after winning each of the last four meetings and five of the last eight dating back to the 2019-20 season. West Chester’s road win over Bloomsburg in January 2020 was the Golden Rams first road win over the Huskies since January 2018. It was the team’s first win over Bloomsburg since a January 2019 victory in Hollinger. West Chester has not lost to Bloomsburg at home since February of the 2022 season when the Huskies escaped with a narrow 67-55 win over the Golden Rams.
WCU Women’s Basketball Notes ...West Chester (8-10, 5-6) fell at Mansfield on Wednesday night by a 77-72 final. The Golden Rams got off to a slow start offensively and found themselves down 24 late in the second quarter before trailing 47-27 heading into the locker room. West Chester was far from finished as the Golden Rams mounted a furious second-half comeback, which saw them take the lead midway through the fourth and pull back to within one with 30 seconds to play in a 77-72 setback on Wednesday night. West Chester outscored its hosts 20-12 in the third and 24-18 in the fourth after opening the frame on a 13-0 run to erase a 12-point deficit heading into the fourth. Michelle Kozicki picked up her 10th double-double of the year with 35 points and 10 rebounds, along with a team-high four blocks, while Anna McTamney scored 12 points with seven rebounds, four steals, and three assists. West Chester shot 38.0 % (27of-71) from the field and 27.8 % (5-of-18) from three-point range while also going 13-for-21 (61.9 %) from the line. Kozicki ranks second in the PSAC in scoring, averaging 20.9 points per game, while her 10.1 rebounds per game is fifth best in the league. The senior forward has 10 double-doubles to her name, including six in the last eight games, which ranks her in a tie for fifth in D2 in double-doubles while also ranking second in the PSAC. Emily Chmiel leads the PSAC and D2 in double-doubles with 13 to start the season. Kozicki has also scored 35 points twice since December 17, becoming the first player to score 35 points or more twice in the same season since Leah Johnson, who, along with Mitzi Reitnouer, are the only two other Golden Rams to accomplish this feat. Anna McTamney, is second on the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging 15.8 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. McTamney is eighth in the league in scoring, making West Chester the only team to place two players in the top 10 in the league in scoring. Ranking third on the team in scoring, Bella Mazur has been a great addition to the Golden Ram lineup in her rookie campaign, averaging 9.4 points per game thanks in part to six double-digit scoring efforts in eight games and seven such efforts in eight home games this season. As a team, West Chester averages 67.4 points per game on 39.8 % shooting from the field and 27.2 % from three-point range. West Chester also leads the PSAC and ranks third in Division II in free throw shooting, connecting on 80.4 % of its attempts at the stripe.
Bloomsburg Women’s Basketball Notes...Bloomsburg (12-6, 6-5) scrapped its way to a 58-56 OT victory over Shepherd on Monday night behind 15 points and nine rebounds from senior forward Katie Starr. The Huskies trailed by two after the first quarter but held an eight-point lead at the half after outscoring their guests 18-8 in the second quarter to seemingly seize control of the game. Far from over, Shepherd countered with a 21-12 third-quarter effort, which gave the Rams a 41-40 lead heading into the fourth quarter. The fourth was the lowest-scoring quarter of the night as the two teams combined for just 19 points, but it was enough for Bloomsburg to force overtime with the score tied at 50-50. In OT, Bloomsburg outscored its guests 8-6 to escape with a narrow 58-56 home victory and improve to 6-5 in East play. Led by the 15 points from Starr, Bloomsburg shot just 34.5 % from the field, including 27.3 % from deep, while also going 14-for-20 (70.0 %) at the free throw line. For the year, Bloomsburg averages 66.6 points per game on 43.0 % shooting from the field, including 31.4 % from deep, led by a 15.4 point-per-game average from Starr, who also leads the team in rebounding, averaging 7.3 rebounds per game. Ella Kale is second on the team in scoring, averaging 10.1 points per game, while also leading the team and league in assists, averaging 5.5 per game. Bloomsburg holds a slim 35.9-35.6 lead in rebounding along with a slim 17.7-16.8 lead in turnovers, thanks in part to a 7.4 steal per game average, led by an average of two steals per game by Starr.
Up Next for the Golden Rams ... Today is West Chester’s final home game of January, which has seen the Golden Rams play to a mark of 2-1 in Hollinger Field House to open the New Year. West Chester will head to Millersville on Wednesday night to renew its rivalry with the Marauders beginning at 5:30 p.m. before visiting Lock Haven on February 1 beginning at 1 p.m. West Chester will open its February home slate on February 5 vs. Shepherd at 5:30 p.m.

Opening Tip... As the Golden Rams continue to receive votes in both the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and D2SIDA National polls, West Chester prepares to renew its rivalry with Bloomsburg on Saturday afternoon in Hollinger Field House beginning at 3 p.m. Head coach Damien Blair looks to continue his march to 300 career wins this afternoon as he enters play just five wins away from becoming the second West Chester men’s basketball coach to accomplish this feat with the lone other being legendary head coach Dick DeLaney, who the Hollinger Field House floor now bears the name of alongside legendary women’s basketball head coach Deirdre Kane. West Chester will look to run its winning streak against Bloomsburg to eight in a row on Saturday afternoon and move to 77-69 in the all-time series against the Huskies. Following a late January 2020 loss at Bloomsburg, West Chester has looked dominant against the Huskies, winning each of the last seven meetings, with four of those seven wins coming by double digits. This includes an 81-68 win in late January 2024 at Bloomsburg and an 84-63 over the Huskies in the regular-season finale in Hollinger last year. West Chester has not fallen to Bloomsburg at home since January 2018, when the Huskies won their fourth game in five meetings against the Golden Rams. West Chester will also be looking to remain unbeaten at home this season, entering play a perfect 9-0 in Hollinger in the midst of a 13-game home winning streak, which is the second-best in the PSAC and sixth-best in Division II men’s basketball.
WCU Men’s Basketball Notes ... West Chester (15-3, 10-1) took to the road on Wednesday night in search of its 15th win of the season against Mansfield. West Chester trailed throughout the early stages of the first half and, despite building its lead up to 10 early in the second half, needed a late-game run (9-3) to escape Mansfield with an 80-78 victory. Davante Dennis led West Chester in scoring with 26 points on 12-of-20 shooting, but a pair of late free throws with just .8 seconds to play by Joshua Walker lifted WCU to the two-point win. West Chester shot 38.8 % from the field and 37.5 % from three-point range while also connecting on 85.7 % (12-for-14) at the free-throw line to escape with the victory. West Chester has been led by Elijah Allen, who averages 15.4 points and 2.1 assists per game. Joshua Walker has caught fire in recent weeks after missing time due to injury early in the season, averaging 11.1 points per game, which is fourth best on the team, while also leading the squad in rebounding, averaging 7.8 rebounds per game. Army-West Point transfer Dylan Blair has also seemed to find his footing in recent weeks as the sophomore guard now averages 11.2points per game, which is third best on the team, along with 4.6 assists per game, which is first on the team and among the best in the PSAC. This 4.6 assist per game average includes Blair’s 11 helpers in the win over Shippensburg last Saturday, which is the most in a single game since Kyle McGee dished out 11 against ESU in February 2023. West Chester leads the PSAC and ranks fifth in DII in rebounding, averaging 43.8 rebounds per game, including a 16.9 offensive-rebound per game average, which is fourth best in Division II men’s basketball approaching the final month of the 2024-25 regular season.
Bloomsburg Men’s Basketball Notes... Bloomsburg (3-15, 2-9) enters play on Saturday looking to halt a three-game losing streak as the Huskies find themselves in the midst of another challenging season. Most recently, Bloomsburg hosted Shepherd Wednesday night and fell to the Rams by a 64-52 final. Bloomsburg trailed by four (32-28) at the half and was outscored 32-24 in the second half, shooting 34.5 % from the field and 28.0 % from beyond the arc in the loss. The Huskies did shoot a perfect 100 % at the line in the loss, but they only made seven trips to the line, limiting the offensive boost this provided. Matt Bengel led Bloomsburg in scoring with 17 points and five rebounds, while Louie Wild led the way in assists with five helpers in the 12-point loss. Bengel, a Senior guard from Erie, is continuing to do his part for the Huskies in 2024-25, leading the team in scoring (17.6/g) and rebounding (5.9/g) while also averaging 1.6 assists and 1.4 steals per game to rank third and first on the team in these categories. Wild leads the squad in assists, averaging 2.8 per game, and is second on the team in scoring (12.9/g) and rebounding (3.7/g). Averaging 68.9 points per game, Bloomsburg shoots 43.7 % from the field and 34.7 % from three-point range on the year but trails in both rebounding (39.3-33.0) and turnovers (18.0-15.7) entering play on Saturday afternoon.
Up Next for the Golden Rams ... Today is West Chester’s final home game of January, which has seen the Golden Rams play to a mark of 3-0 in Hollinger Field House to open the New Year. West Chester will head to Millersville on Wednesday night to renew its rivalry with the Marauders beginning at 7:30 p.m. before visiting Lock Haven on February 1 beginning at 3 p.m. West Chester will open its February home slate on February 5 vs. Shepherd at 7:30 p.m.

From late August through early-to-mid March each school year, West Chester University’s cheerleaders are front and center at all Golden Rams football games in the fall and both men’s and women’s basketball games in the winter. Additionally, West Chester University’s cheerleaders have traveled to Orlando, Fla., and the Wide World of Sports in January to compete in the UCA Nationals. The Golden Rams Cheer Squad placed among the top five at UCA Nationals in each of the past four years, including a national championship effort last winter and a runner-up performance in 2023.
The cheerleaders work hard in the preseason learning mostly new material for the upcoming campaign, conditioning and developing a pride in the West Chester University community. Aside from preparing their 35-member team for the year ahead, the West Chester University cheerleaders also host high school clinics in order to develop cheerleading around the area.
The West Chester University cheerleaders take on many community service projects focusing mainly on breast cancer awareness, as well as doing many youth and high school cheering clinics, donating to needy schools and volunteering with the elderly within the West Chester community.
The team also makes many public appearances as representatives of WCU, highlighted each holiday season with a spot in the borough’s annual Christmas Parade.
