Dr. R. Lorraine (Laurie) Bernotsky was unanimously named the 16th president of West Chester University by the Board of Governors of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education (PASSHE), effective July 1, 2024. A longstanding champion for public education and State System students, Dr. Bernotsky is a first-generation college graduate who leads the largest *R2 institution within Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education. Prior to being named president, Dr. Bernotsky held the position of interim president of Pennsylvania Western University (PennWest) as a loaned executive from West Chester University. Known for being a transformative leader in higher education, Dr. Bernotsky is prepared to help West Chester University chart its path toward the next 150 years.
As a collaborative and inclusive leader who is centered on student success, Dr. Bernotsky holds nearly three decades of progressive experience in higher education. She began her career at West Chester University in 1996 as a member of the political science faculty. When the opportunity opened to serve as associate provost and dean of graduate studies at West Chester University, she competed in a national search for the role and served for several years before becoming provost in 2015.
As West Chester University’s provost, Dr. Bernotsky successfully led the University’s Academic Affairs Division, which oversees approximately 850 faculty and is comprised of six colleges, as well as two schools, that offers more than 100 academic degree programs while also housing the Office of Institutional Research, the Center for International Programs (now the Center for Global Engagement), the offices of undergraduate admissions, enrollment management, financial aid, the graduate school, and undergraduate student support services.
Executive vice president was added to Dr. Bernotsky’s role in 2017 and, as the University’s second-in-command, she also assumed leadership of the University’s budget and labor relations function.
Recognized throughout the Commonwealth as a highly respected and effective higher education leader, Dr. Bernotsky was asked by Chancellor Daniel Greenstein to serve PennWest temporarily in the fall of 2022 as executive vice president and chief operating officer, providing guidance and direction in all operational areas. From October 2022 through June 2023, Dr. Bernotsky worked collaboratively in this loaned capacity to help strengthen PennWest’s operational excellence, strategic enrollment management systems, and long-term plans for financial sustainability. The positive effects of Dr. Bernotsky’s work ultimately led to her appointment as interim president of PennWest on July 1, 2023 by PASSHE’s Board of Governors; she assumed the role four months after her appointment as PennWest’s acting president and following the retirement of PennWest founding president, Dr. Dale-Elizabeth Pehrsson.
Terry Beattie begins his ninth athletic campaign as the Director of Athletics at West Chester University and 20th overall as a member of the Golden Rams’ athletic department. Previous to being named the Interim AD in 2017, Beattie served as the Associate AD overseeing facilities and game day operations. He also oversaw all of the grounds and equipment room operations for the athletic department.
A 32-year veteran in college athletics, Beattie recently spearheaded the development of the Michael Horrocks Emerging Leaders Institute at WCU, which provides leadership training and development to a select group of outstanding student athletes who, as recognized future leaders, will be taking on the mantle of leadership within their team sometime in the future.
In his eight years as the university’s athletics director, Beattie created a Sports Performance aspect to the athletic department implementing additional resources from which WCU student-athletes could benefit. His collaboration with a number of other areas on campus gives student-athletes access to mental health and sport psychology experts, an expanded and much improved strength and conditioning program as well as education on sport nutrition.
His work in the field of Sport Leadership Training gives West Chester University’s coaching staff and administrators access to some of the cutting edge research on how to become a better leader, coach and mentor to young adults.
He has also served on a number of strategic planning committee’s both within the athletic department and in conjunction with the university. During his previous 14 years in Southeastern Pennsylvania, Beattie has chaired search committees to replace head coaches and assistant athletic directors while coordinating scheduling for West Chester University’s numerous athletic facilities. He has also served on search committees on the university side.
Beattie supervised the athletic department’s nine on-campus facilities, including both John A. Farrell Stadium and Serpico Stadium as well as Vonnie Gros Field.
A member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), Beattie was recently named the chair of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Athletic Administrators for the 2023-24 campaign. He has also served roles on the NCAA regional and national advisory committees overseeing selections to the NCAA Division II Tournament in a variety of sports.

Opening Tip... After opening its 2025 home slate with an 83-73 setback vs. Lock Haven on Monday evening, the West Chester University women’s basketball bounced right back with a 77-72 OT victory over East Stroudsburg on Wednesday night to improve to 6-9 on the year and 3-5 in league action. West Chester’s Wednesday night win over East Stroudsburg was the Golden Rams third OT win in three such games already this season, marking the first time since 2015-16 that West Chester has played three overtime games in one year. Wednesday night’s victory also marked the first time since 2009-10 that West Chester has won three OT games in one year and the first time since 2008-09 that West Chester has won each of its first three OT games of the season. On Saturday afternoon, West Chester welcomes Kutztown (6-9, 2-5) to Hollinger Field House on what will also be Alumni Day for the Golden Rams. Following the Golden Rams annual Alumni Day on Saturday morning, West Chester will look to stretch its winning streak against Kutztown to five in a row and improve to 51-37 all-time with a critical matchup against the PSAC East rival Golden Bears. West Chester swept three meetings against Kutztown last year, including a 69-42 triumph in the PSAC Tournament in March 2024. West Chester has not lost to Kutztown in Hollinger Field House since February 2022, when head coach Janet Malouf’s charges prevailed by a 75-51 final as part of a five-game winning streak against head coach Kiera Wooden’s Golden Rams.
Happening Pregame... Before tonight’s game, West Chester plans to recognize Michelle Kozicki again for scoring her 1000th point as a Golden Ram on Friday night at Shepherd. Kozicki scored 21 in the victory, including 12 in the second half, with 10 of those 12 coming in the fourth quarter.
WCU Women’s Basketball Notes ...West Chester (6-9, 3-5) jumped out to an early lead and held a 14-10 lead at the end of the first before ESU stormed back in the second quarter to take a two-point lead into the halftime break. West Chester seemed to restore order in the second half, pulling out to a 14-point lead with under eight minutes to play, thanks partly to a 9-0 run, which spanned the end of the third quarter and the early stages of the fourth. ESU had an answer once more, storming back with a 13-0 run of its own to take a slim two-point lead late. Michelle Kozicki led West Chester in scoring with 26 points, including a late layup, which forced overtime as regulation ended with the two teams tied at 66. West Chester outscored ESU 11-6 in OT, led by five points from McTamney and 66.7 % shooting from the field to earn the five-point victory. McTamney finished the game on Wednesday with 18 points and eight rebounds and is now just one point shy of scoring her 1000th career point as a Golden Ram entering play on Saturday. Bella Mazur scored in double figures for the second game in a row and the fourth time in the last five games, finishing with 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting while also going 2-for-2 at the line to help lead West Chester offensively. As a team, WCU shot 38.5 % (25-of-65) from the field, including 26.3 % (5-of-19) from three-point range, while also going 22-for-24 (91.7 %) at the line. Kozicki ranks second in the PSAC in scoring, averaging 20.5 points per game, while her 10.0 rebounds per game is fourth best in the league. Anna McTamney is second on the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging 16.3 points and 6.6 rebounds per game as she also closes in on her 1000th point as a Golden Ram after scoring her 1000th collegiate point in a November victory over Holy Family. Ranking third on the team in scoring, Bella Mazur has been a great addition to the Golden Ram lineup in her rookie campaign, averaging 9.2 points per game thanks in part to four double-digit scoring efforts in five games and five such efforts in six home games this season. As a team, West Chester averages 67.3 points per game on 39.5 % shooting from the field and 26.0 % from three-point range. West Chester also leads the PSAC and ranks in the top 10 in Division II in free throw shooting, connecting on 81.5 % of its attempts at the stripe, which is sixth best.
Kutztown Women’s Basketball Notes... Kutztown (6-9, 2-5) enters play on Saturday looking to bounce back from an 80-66 loss at the hands of Shippensburg on Wednesday night after opening East play with a 68-66 win over Lock Haven on January 3. At Shippensburg, Kutztown trailed by eight at the end of the first and 13 at the half and was unable to come all the way back in the 14-point loss despite 23 points by Naia Pulliam and 13 more from Shannon Remolde. Kutztown shot 42.9 % from the field, including a 26.3 % effort from three-point range on Wednesday but was outrebounded by a 40-28 margin and committed 21 turnovers while forcing only 17. Averaging 63.9 points per game on 39.1 % shooting from the field and 32.1 % from deep, Kutztown is led offensively by Pulliam, who averages 16.3 points per game while also ranking second in rebounding, grabbing an average of 5.0 rebounds per game.
Up Next for the Golden Rams ... Today is West Chester’s fourth game in eight days as the Golden Rams wrap up a busy stretch, which included a pair of road trips to Shepherd and East Stroudsburg with a home battle against preseason favorite Lock Haven sandwiched in the middle. The Golden Rams have a well-deserved and much-needed bye on Wednesday and will return to action next Saturday at home against Shippensburg at 1 p.m.

Opening Tip... After seeing its 12-game winning streak halted by longtime rival East Stroudsburg on Wednesday night, West Chester, who received votes in both the NABC and D2SIDA National Polls this week, will look to bounce back on Saturday afternoon against Kutztown on Alumni Day beginning at 4 p.m. West Chester has won each of its last five against Kutztown, including an 84-79 victory in Hollinger a year ago, which moved the all-time series to 81-41 in favor of the Golden Rams. West Chester has not lost to Kutztown at home since January 2020, which ironically was the loss that halted the nationally-ranked Golden Rams 13-game winning streak to open the 2019-20 campaign.
WCU Men’s Basketball Notes ... West Chester (12-3, 7-1) suffered its first loss in nearly two months on Wednesday night as the Golden Rams fell victim to a late-game East Stroudsburg run in a 77-68 setback in Koehler Field House. West Chester trailed by four at the half but opened the second half on a 10-0 run to jump out to a six-point lead. The Golden Rams maintained an advantage for much of the second half, but East Stroudsburg rallied and escaped late, walking away with a nine-point victory after leading by 11 with under 30 seconds to play. Davante Dennis had a great night for West Chester, scoring a career-high 23 points on 9-of-12 shooting, including five makes from three-point territory, as he was one of three Golden Rams in double figures. Dennis was one of three Golden Rams in double figures, and Joshua Walker and Elijah Allen scored 16 and 10 points, respectively. West Chester shot 40.7 % (22-of-54) in the loss, including a 30.4 % (7-of-23) effort from beyond the arc, while also hitting 77.3 % (17-of-22) at the free throw line. Averaging 77.1 points per game on 41.9 % shooting from the field, including a 30.8 % shooting effort from three-point range, West Chester has been led by Elijah Allen, who averages 15.7 points and 1.9 assists per game. Joshua Walker has caught fire in recent weeks after missing time due to injury early in the season, averaging 11.5 points per game, which is second best on the team, while also leading the squad in rebounding, averaging 7.5 rebounds per game, including his 16 point effort at ESU on Wednesday night. Army-West Point transfer Dylan Blair has also seemed to find his footing in recent weeks as the sophomore guard now averages 10.5 points per game, which is third best on the team, along with four assists per game, which is first on the team and among the best in the PSAC. West Chester leads the PSAC and ranks third in DII in rebounding, averaging 45.0 rebounds per game, including an 18.1 offensive-rebound per game average, which is the best in Division II men’s basketball entering the final two months of the 2024-25 regular season.
Kutztown Men’s Basketball Notes... Kutztown (4-9, 1-6) enters play on Saturday looking to start a two-game winning streak heading into a rescheduled game with Mansfield on Monday evening in Kutztown. Originally slated to play Mansfield on January 6, that game was postponed due to the remnants of Winter Storm Blair, which led to the Golden Bears road test at Shippensburg being their first game since January 3 at Lock Haven. The Golden Bears looked well rested early against the Raiders, jumping out to a 37-31 lead in the first half, and used this advantage to hold for the 77-73 victory in Heiges Field House. Kutztown shot 43.8 % from the field and 23.5 % from deep in the victory, led by 29 points from Jalen Bryant, while also ending the game with a 40-29 lead on the glass thanks to a 10-rebound effort by Jordan Nkoa Abessolo. Nkoa Abessolo scored 10 points as the third and final Golden Bear in double figures in the victory as the Millersville transfer picked up his second consecutive double-double and third of the season. For the year, Kutztown enters play averaging 74.2 points per game on 41.9 % shooting from the field and 29.3 % shooting from deep while also hitting 76.8 % of its shots at the free throw line. Individually, Bryant leads the team in scoring, averaging 21.2 points per game, which is second-best in the PSAC, trailing only Cam Kearney of Clarion (21.4). Nkoa Abessolo leads the team in rebounding, averaging 7.5 per game, while Jaiden McGhee is second on the team in scoring (13.3/g) and rebounding (5.0/g) while leading the team in assists, averaging 1.6 per game. Bryant and Nkoa Abessolo are tied for second on the team in assists, averaging 1.5 per game, while Bryant is also first on the team in steals, averaging 1.6 per game.
From late August through early-to-mid March each school year, West Chester University’s cheerleaders are front and center at all Golden Rams football games in the fall and both men’s and women’s basketball games in the winter. Additionally, West Chester University’s cheerleaders have traveled to Orlando, Fla., and the Wide World of Sports in January to compete in the UCA Nationals. The Golden Rams Cheer Squad placed among the top five at UCA Nationals in each of the past four years, including a national championship effort last winter and a runner-up performance in 2023.
The cheerleaders work hard in the preseason learning mostly new material for the upcoming campaign, conditioning and developing a pride in the West Chester University community. Aside from preparing their 35-member team for the year ahead, the West Chester University cheerleaders also host high school clinics in order to develop cheerleading around the area.
The West Chester University cheerleaders take on many community service projects focusing mainly on breast cancer awareness, as well as doing many youth and high school cheering clinics, donating to needy schools and volunteering with the elderly within the West Chester community.
The team also makes many public appearances as representatives of WCU, highlighted each holiday season with a spot in the borough’s annual Christmas Parade.
