ABOUT THE WEEKEND (WBB) Opening Tip...Off to a 4-1 start to the season, the West Chester University women’s basketball team returns home this weekend looking to bounce back from a 75-63 loss at Jefferson on Sunday and remain perfect in Hollinger Field House this season. To accomplish these goals, the Golden Rams must defeat Slippery Rock on Friday afternoon and Edinboro on Saturday in the first crossover weekend of the 2023-24 season. In this opening weekend last year, West Chester went a perfect 2-0, posting victories over Mercyhurst and Gannon, to extend its streak of opening weekend victories to three years in a row, dating back to the 2019-20 season. West Chester enters play ranked 13th in Division II women’s basketball, falling slightly after peaking at sixth in the nation a week ago, the highest ranking in program history. WCU Women’s Basketball Notes ... West Chester enters play on Friday afternoon looking to rebound from its first loss of the season, a 75-63 setback at the hands of Jefferson in the first road game of the year on Sunday afternoon. West Chester led by as many as 12 in the first half of this game and clawed back to within three with two minutes to play, but a late cold snap, which saw the team go 0-for6 from the floor, combined with solid free throw shooting by the Rams, allowed the hosts to put the game away and earn the 12-point victory. Despite the first loss of the new season, West Chester had four players in double figures on Sunday, led by 20 points from Emily McAteer on 9-of-18 shooting from the field to go along with 15 from Anna McTamney, 11 from Michelle Kozicki, and ten first-half points from Leah Johnson. This weekend, West Chester will face two teams it has not seen in quite some time, facing Slippery Rock for the first time since 2021 and Edinboro for the first time since January of the 2019-20 season. West Chester is on a losing streak against the Rock and the Fighting Scots, dropping three in a row to Slippery Rock and each of the last four to Edinboro. Fans should take heart in the fact that each of the previous three meetings against Slippery Rock has been decided by three points or less, and the last meeting against Edinboro was the same, with West Chester falling by a 69-66 final at Edinboro. Slippery Rock Women’s Basketball Notes...Slippery Rock enters play with a mark of 0-2 on the year, having faced just two Division II opponents so far with a pair of exhibitions against Division I foes (Youngstown State & Wright State) intermingled. Most recently, the Rock traveled to Malone on Tuesday evening, falling by a 74-57 final despite holding a 17-14 lead after the first quarter. The second quarter was a turning point on Tuesday night as Malone outscored Slippery Rock 22-13 to erase the early deficit and carry a 39-27 lead into the halftime break, which the hosts would never relinquish. Regan Atkins scored 19 points on 8-of-15 shooting, while Kristina Donza added 14 of her own in the setback. Under the tutelage of first-year head coach Ryenn Micaletti, the Rock shot just 36.7 % (22-of-60) from the field in the setback, including a 25.9 % (7-of-27) effort from deep while also going 6-for-10 at the line. Atkins and Donza have been the top two scoring options for Micaletti’s bunch this season, averaging 16.0 and 13.5 points per game as the only two players with more than 10 points scored entering the second month of the season. Atkins also leads the team in rebounding, averaging 5.0 rebounds per game, while Donza leads the team in assists, averaging 1.5 assists per game. As a team, Slippery Rock is averaging 51.5 points per game through its first two DII games of the season, shooting 35.4 % from the field and 23.9 % from beyond the arc, something the Golden Rams, who have the fourth-best three-point defense in DII, will look to take advantage of on Friday night. Edinboro Women’s Basketball Notes... When West Chester faces Edinboro, it will be the second game in as many days for both squads, as the Fighting Scots will travel to West Chester from Kutztown on Friday night. The Fighting Scots enter the weekend with a record of 1-3 on the year after dropping its last two against Findlay and Wayne State. Against Wayne State on Tuesday night, Edinboro held an early four-point lead but found itself on the wrong side of a second-quarter run, which saw the visitors erase the early deficit and take a three-point lead into the halftime break. This lead grew in the second half, with Wayne State outscoring its hosts by five in the third quarter and by three in the fourth quarter to win. Hayley Sims and Gillian Fisher tied for the team lead in scoring, finishing with 13 points each, with 12 from Morgan Gentile and 11 from Hope Garrity. As a team, Edinboro shot 41.5 % from the field, including a 43.8 % (7-of-16) effort from range, while also shooting 94.1 % (16-of-17) from the line in a tough-luck loss. Entering play averaging 63.8 points per game and shooting 35.4 % from the field, 32.4 % from three-point range, and 77.6 % from the line on the year, the Fighting Scots have been a tough out through the first month of the season. Gillian Fisher has been the leading scorer for the team throughout the season, averaging 12.0 points per game, while Gentile and Sims are second and third, averaging 11.5 and 10.8, respectively. Up next for the Golden Rams ... West Chester plays its final home game before the Holiday Break on Tuesday evening against Lincoln, with the opening tip set for 5:30 p.m. in Hollinger. West Chester will take the road to Erie on December 18 and 19, squaring off against Mercyhurst and Gannon before continuing its crossover slate with a Parent’s Day matchup against Clarion on December 30.

ABOUT THE WEEKEND (MBB) Opening Tip...After halting a three-game losing streak with a 74-68 victory over Chestnut Hill on Thanksgiving Eve, the West Chester University men’s basketball team (2-3) is ready to open PSAC play with a crossover weekend battle against Slippery Rock on Friday at 5 p.m. and Edinboro at 3 p.m. on Saturday. West Chester will look to get back to and get above .500 to open the month of December on Friday night while simultaneously looking to start league play a perfect 2-0 ahead of its non-league finale next Saturday afternoon against Goldey Beacom. WCU Men’s Basketball Notes ... West Chester enters play on Friday evening following a 74-68 victory over Chestnut Hill, which saw the Golden Rams just out to a 21-point lead in the first half and lead by as many as 19 late in the second half before the host Griffins began an ill-fated comeback effort, cutting the Golden Ram lead to single digits in the final moments of regulation. Elijah Allen had a career night in the victory, finishing with 20 points and a career-high 11 rebounds for a double-double. Playing in his second game of the season, Robert Smith chipped in 16 of his own to go along with 14 from Joshua Walker and 13 from Jordan Kellier, who also finished with eight rebounds and three assists in the victory. West Chester shot well throughout the night last Wednesday, shooting 50.9 % from the field and 41.2 % from deep while also connecting on 90.0 % of its attempts at the line, all of which were new season highs for the Golden Rams. West Chester heads into the weekend averaging 70.2 points per game on 41.2 % shooting from the field and 23.6 % shooting from deep while also outrebounding its foes by an average of 5.8 rebounds per game. Jordan Kellier has been a significant part of this rebounding effort, leading the team on the glass, averaging 10.0 per game, which ranks 18th best in DII and third in the PSAC. Slippery Rock Men’s Basketball Notes.. Slippery Rock enters play undergoing a significant climate change, coming to West Chester straight from the beaches of Hawaii earlier this week. The Rock enters with a record of 1-3 after dropping two games in two days in Hawaii, falling to Hawaii Pacific on Sunday, November 26, by a 76-74 final before dropping its finale against Chaminade (yes, that Chaminade who appeared in the Maui Invitational just before Thanksgiving) by a 75-67 final on Monday night. These setbacks, combined with an 86-62 setback against Daemen on November 21, have been a change for the Rock after a season-opening 100-71 victory over West Chester Virginia Wesleyan in Morrow Field House. Against Chaminade, Lashon Lindsey and Sheick Samoura led the way in scoring with 13 points each, while Maceo Austin added 12 of his own, but it was not enough to overcome a mid-half run by CU, which helped the hosts earn a 75-67 victory on Monday night. Slippery Rock shot 36.6 % from the field in this game and 24.1 % from deep while connecting on 88.9 % of its free throws and winning the rebounding battle by a 43-41 margin. These totals were a bit of a deviation from the norm for sixth-year head coach Ian Grady’s bunch, as the team averages 75.8 points per game on 43.1 % shooting from the field and 32.0 % shooting from beyond the arc on the year. Austin has been the top offensive threat for a deep Slippery Rock squad, which shows five players averaging in double figures on the year, as he averages 16.0 points per game while also ranking second on the team in assists, averaging 2.5 helpers per game. Edinboro Men’s Basketball Notes... Edinboro has had a similar start to the year, entering the weekend with a record of 1-4 after earning its first victory of the season with an 87-80 over Roberts Wesleyan after falling to West Virginia Wesleyan (92-87), Fairmont State (85-64), Malone (74-68), and Tiffin (78-55) to open the season. When the Fighting Scots make their first visit to Hollinger since the 2018 season on Saturday afternoon, it will be their second game of the weekend, as the team must first manage Kutztown on Friday at 3 p.m. On Tuesday night against Roberts Wesleyan, head coach Justin Jennings secured his first win as the Fighting Scots head coach, thanks to a 19-8 run to close out the game, including a 9-0 from by Bernie Blunt and Easton Fulmer with under five minutes to play in regulation. Blunt and Fulmer led the team in scoring on Tuesday night, finishing with 23 and 22 points, respectively. Blunt has been the top offensive weapon for Edinboro throughout the year, averaging 20.6 points per game through the first month of the season as the lone Edinboro player with over 100 points scored on the year. Daunte Wilcott is second on the team in scoring, averaging 10.0 points per game, while leading the team in rebounding, averaging 7.8 rebounds per game. As a team, Edinboro enters the weekend averaging 72.2 points per game, shooting 39.3 % from the field and 27.6 % from deep, and averaging 39.8 rebounds per game, while its opponents have corralled 42.0 per game. Up Next for the Golden Rams ... West Chester will remain home for its final non-league game next Saturday when the Golden Rams welcome Goldey-Beacom to Hollinger Field House for a 1 p.m. start. This will be the last home game for West Chester until December 30 when the team faces off against Clarion beginning at 3 p.m. West Chester will be on the road before this matchup, traveling to Mercyhurst and Gannon on December 18 and 19, continuing its road warrior start to the 2023-24 campaign.

In his 14 seasons with the Purple & Gold, Blair boasts a 262-142 (.648) overall record with four NCAA Tournament appearances in the last seven years. It was Blair’s mission that winter to orchestrate a return to the PSAC seminals and with it a shot at a PSAC championship. Blair led West Chester to the PSAC postseason tournament in his rst season on the sideline in 2008-09, after inheriting a squad that had not reached the playoffs the previous two campaigns. One of the top guards in school history, Blair made a big splash in his rst season as head coach at his alma mater. The Golden Rams nished 18-10 overall and 9-5 in conference play, nishing third overall in the Eastern Division and leading the Rams to the quarternals of the PSAC postseason tournament. A loss to cross-town rival Cheyney ended Blair’s inaugural season prematurely. He made the leap into the college game from the high school ranks where he led nearby Downingtown High School to the Ches-Mont League boys’ basketball championship -- the rst title in school history -- in 2007 and a spot in the PIAA state playoffs for the fourth time during his tenure. Overall, Blair compiled a high school career coaching record of 173-78 (.689). Blair left Downingtown High as the school’s all-time winningest boy’s basketball coach. He was named the Daily Local News coach of the year as well as ChesMont League coach of the year his nal season. During his collegiate playing career, Blair set seven individual scoring records on the career, season and game levels. His 2,025 career points stands second all-time at West Chester University and ninth all-time in PSAC history.
