University and Athletic Administration University President Dr. Christopher

Dr. Christopher M. Fiorentino enters his eighth and final year as president of West Chester University. With 40 years of higher education and administration experience at West Chester University, Fiorentino announced his retirement prior to the beginning of the 2023-24 academic year. He will step down as university president in June 2024.

Fiorentino, who holds three degrees in economics (baccalaureate, master’s and doctorate) from Temple University, joined WCU’s economics faculty in 1983. His role evolved from assistant professor to dean of the College of Business and Public Administration to vice president for External Operations to his current position of university president.

Dr. Fiorentino has been active in numerous leadership roles on campus, helping to secure AACSB International accreditation for the School of Business; developing off-campus academic centers, including the Graduate Center in West Goshen Township; and working with faculty and supporters to create the Cottrell Entrepreneurial Leadership Center. Dr. Fiorentino also spearheaded the development of the Center for Community Solutions, which links business and civic leaders with appropriate University faculty and staff. His responsibilities in his last position included University operations at the State System’s Center City Philadelphia site.

Dr. Fiorentino is married to WCU alumnae, Dr. Susan Fiorentino, ’86, a Professor in the Management Department at West Chester University where she is currently serving as Coordinator for the Master of Science in Human Resource Management program. The Fiorentinos have three children: Greg, a software engineer and WCU alum; Diana Marlin, a WCU grad and registered dietitian; and Jeff, a Penn State University graduate.

Director of Athletics Terry Beattie

Terry Beattie begins his eighth athletic campaign as the Director of Athletics at West Chester University.

Overall, Beattie enters into his 18th season with West Chester University’s Department of Athletics. Previous to being named the Interim AD in 2017, Beattie served as the Associate AD overseeing facilities and game day operations. He also oversaw all of the grounds and equipment room operations for the athletic department.

A 31-year veteran in college athletics, Beattie recently spearheaded the development of the Michael Horrocks Emerging Leaders Institute at WCU, which provides leadership training and development to a select group of outstanding student athletes who, as recognized future leaders, will be taking on the mantle of leadership within their team sometime in the future.

He has also served on a number of strategic planning committee’s both within the athletic department and in conjunction with the university.

In his seven years as the university’s athletics director, Beattie created a Sports Performance aspect to the athletic department implementing additional resources from which WCU student-athletes could benefit. His collaboration with a number of other areas on campus gives student-athletes access to mental health and sport psychology experts, an expanded and much improved strength and conditioning program as well as education on sport nutrition.

His work in the field of Sport Leadership Training gives West Chester University’s coaching staff and administrators access to some of the cutting edge research on how to become a better leader, coach and mentor to young adults.

A member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), Beattie was recently named the chair of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Athletic Administrators for the 2023-24 campaign. He has also served roles on the NCAA regional and national advisory committees overseeing selections to the NCAA Division II Tournament in a variety of sports.

A native of Rochester, N.Y., Beattie has an extensive background in college athletics dating back to 1991.

Beattie, 54, is 1991 graduate of Alfred University in Alfred, N.Y., with a degree in Business Administration. He completed his master’s degree in Sport Administration at Canisius College in 1999. He received a tenured promotion to Assistant Professor at West Chester University in April 2009.

Opening Tip...Off to a 7-3 start to the year, West Chester appears to be well on its way to another stellar season in 2023-24. The Golden Rams entered last week an impressive 7-1 overall and 2-0 in league play but stumbled slightly in their trip to Erie, falling to Mercyhurst by a 75-71 final on Monday afternoon before falling to No. 3/5 Gannon on Tuesday night by an 86-71 final. A perfect 7-0 at home this year, West Chester returns to Hollinger at the perfect time as the Golden Rams will have the chance to end 2023 with a victory, With a win this afternoon, head coach Kiera Wooden would also improve to 7-2 in the first game back from the DII Holiday Break, while also improving to 2-2 in the last four seasons. Today’s opponent will be the Golden Eagles of Clarion University who enter play in search of their first win of the year with a record of 0-10 to date. West Chester holds a 13-10 lead in the all-time series against Clarion, including wins in each of the last three meetings between the foes. The two sides met at Clarion in each of the last three meetings, including a 70-51 victory in Tippin Gymnasium a year ago. Michelle Kozicki led the way in this game, finishing with 17 points and 12 rebounds as one of five Golden Rams in double figures and one of three with a double-double. West Chester has not hosted Clarion in Hollinger since November of the 2016-17 season, which resulted in a 67-58 loss for the Golden Rams. West Chester enters play an even 2-2 against Clarion in games in Hollinger dating back to the 2009 season but holds an 8-3 lead all-time in games played on University Ave. What’s Happening on the Floor... Today’s pregame will look a bit different as it is Parent’s Appreciation Day, an annual event which allows the West Chester University women’s basketball team to express its appreciation and love for the parents and family members that support our Golden Rams throughout the season. Following this ceremony, West Chester will also honor Emily McAteer with a commemorative ball in recognition of her scoring her 1,000th collegiate point on December 18 at Mercyhurst.

WCU Women’s Basketball Notes ... West Chester enters play on Saturday afternoon following an 86-71 loss at the hands of top-five foe Gannon on Tuesday night. West Chester hung around through the early stages but led for only 24 seconds as the Golden Knights, led by 21 points from Bri Claxon, rolled to a victory over the Golden Rams. Leah Johnson led the way for West Chester, scoring 20 points on 7-of-18 shooting, while Anna McTamney and Michelle Kozicki finished with 16 points. West Chester enters play averaging 74.3 points per game as one of the top offensive units in the PSAC, trailing only Seton Hill, who leads the league in scoring, averaging 79.2 points per game. WCU ranks fourth in the PSAC and first in the PSAC East in field goal percentage, shooting 43.2 % while leading the league in free throw shooting at 79.6 %. Leah Johnson leads the team in scoring, averaging 15.1 points per game, which has helped her move into fifth on the scoring chart with 1456 points, passing Mitzi Reitnouer on Tuesday night at Gannon. Johnson is now just 188 points shy of tying the program scoring record, which is currently held by Brittany Sicinski (1,624; 2012-’16).

Clarion Women’s Basketball Notes...Clarion enters play in search of its first win of the season after falling to Kutztown by a 78-46 final last Tuesday night. The Golden Eagles found themselves down 24 after the first quarter, and despite a 13-point performance by junior forward Alyssa McCellon, Clarion could not overcome the deficit for its first win of the year. Averaging 61.7 points per game and shooting 36.2 % from the field on the year, Clarion shot just 19.6 % from the floor on Tuesday night, including a 25.0 % (6-of-24) effort from three-point territory. Sadre’a Rougeau leads the team in scoring so far this season, averaging 9.8 points per game, while also ranking third on the team in rebounding (3.8/g) and leading the team in steals (2.1/g). Sophomore guard Hannah Wilkerson is second on the team in scoring, averaging 9.7 points per game, while also tying with senior forward Abby Gatesman for first on the team in rebounding, averaging 4.4 rebounds per game.

Up next for the Golden Rams ... Today is the Golden Rams final home game of 2023 and final home date until January 10 when Shepherd comes calling for the PSAC East opener. West Chester will head to 2023 NCAA Tournament foe California (Pa.) on Wednesday, January 3 in the first game of 2024 before opening PSAC East play on January 6 at East leader Lock Haven.

Opening Tip...After stumbling out of the gate and playing to a record of 1-3 to open the year, the West Chester University men’s basketball team has found its stride as the Golden Rams are winners of five of the last six, entering play on Saturday afternoon. West Chester halted its three-game skid with a 74-68 victory over Chestnut Hill just before Thanksgiving in what was the Golden Rams final game of November and has been hard to beat since, defeating Chestnut Hill, Slippery Rock, Edinboro, Goldey Beacom, and Mercyhurst to improve to 6-4 on the year and 3-1 in league play. This afternoon, West Chester will play its final home crossover game of the year against Clarion, with an opening tip set for approximately 3 p.m. West Chester enters play with a record of 11-9 against Clarion, winners of each of the last seven games in the series between the two teams. The two sides first squared off in 1998, resulting in a 64-61 victory for the Golden Eagles as they dominated the series’ early years. West Chester has not lost to today’s Western Division foe since the 2012-13 season when the team earned a 78-66 victory to spark the current seven-game winning streak. A year ago, West Chester posted an 8275 win against Clarion behind two double-doubles from Eli Barrett (27/10) and Joshua Walker (14/12), shooting 43.5 to earn the road victory. West Chester has not hosted Clarion since the 2016-17 season and has won each of the last two meetings in Hollinger, with the last home loss and loss overall coming in December 2011 by an 80-77 final in OT. WCU Men’s Basketball Notes ... Off to its best start in PSAC action since the 2019-20 season, when the team opened the year 13-0 overall and 7-0 in league play, the West Chester University men’s basketball will look to improve to 7-4 and 4-1 in league play this afternoon against a worthy opponent in Clarion. Last Tuesday night, West Chester led briefly and trailed by just six at the half, but it was an early second-half run that allowed nationally-ranked Gannon to surge ahead to a 114-94 victory. Elijah Allen led the team in scoring with 24 points on 7-of-15 shooting, while Robert Smith added 20 to go along with a double-double (11 points/10 rebounds) from Jordan Kellier as the Golden Rams set new season-highs for points scored. Playing its final game of the 2023 half of the schedule, West Chester enters play averaging 76.7 points per game, shooting 43.9 % from the floor and 28.9 % from beyond the arc, led by Elijah Allen, who has been a force in recent weeks, averaging a team-best 18.9 points per game. An integral part of the team’s recent success, Allen has scored in double figures in the last eight games, including four 20+ point performances, with three of those efforts coming in the last four games.

During this stretch, Allen averaged 20.9 points per game and an equally impressive 21.3 points per game in Crossover play. Jordan Kellier leads the team in rebounding, averaging 9.5 rebounds per game, while also ranking third in scoring (10.7/g) and second in assists (2.4/g) has been a force to be reckoned with in his first season as a Golden Ram entering play on Saturday 18th in Division II men’s basketball and second in the PSAC in rebounds per game, while also ranking 18th in DII in defensive rebounds per game, averaging 6.9 per game.

Clarion Men’s Basketball Notes.. Clarion enters play coming off a win in its last game before the Holiday break, a convincing 92-72 victory over Kutztown on December 19. This win gave the Golden Eagles their fourth win in their last six games, also rebounding nicely after having a similar start to the year as the Golden Rams. Steve Kelly scored a team-high 20 points in the win over Kutztown and sits second on the team in scoring, averaging 14.8 points per game, while also leading the team in assists, averaging 4.4 per game. Cam Kearney is the Golden Eagles’ leading scorer, averaging 15.6 points per game and ranking second in rebounding, averaging 6.1 rebounds per game. As a team, Clarion averages 76.3 points per game and allows the same, while also shooting 44.3 % from the field and 30.2 % from three-point range heading into the 11th game of the 2023-24 season.

Up Next for the Golden Rams ... West Chester will head back out on the road for a two-game trip to California (Pa.) on January 3 in the final crossover game of the year before facing Lock Haven on January 6 in the first PSAC East game of the season. The Golden Rams will play their PSAC East home opener on January 10 against Shepherd beginning at 7:30 before hosting East Stroudsburg on January 13 in a rematch of the 2023 PSAC Quarterfinal between the two rivals.

Head Coach Damien Blair completed his 15th season at the helm of the Golden Rams in 2022-23. In his 14 seasons with the Purple & Gold, Blair boasts a 262-142 (.648) overall record with four NCAA Tournament appearances in the last seven years.

Blair has orchestrated a 176-101 (.635) mark in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) contests throughout his tenure, and under his tutelage, the Golden Rams have landed inside the top-three of the PSAC East standings nine times, including a share of the regular-season crown in 2022-23 and six second-place nishes. West Chester has advanced to the PSAC Championship Game on three occasions. The West Chester University alum boasts a 11-12 record in the PSAC Tournament and a 1-4 record in the NCAA Tournament.

It was Blair’s mission that winter to orchestrate a return to the PSAC seminals and with it a shot at a PSAC championship. Blair led West Chester to the PSAC postseason tournament in his rst season on the sideline in 2008-09, after inheriting a squad that had not reached the playoffs the previous two campaigns.

One of the top guards in school history, Blair made a big splash in his rst season as head coach at his alma mater. The Golden Rams nished 18-10 overall and 9-5 in conference play, nishing third overall in the Eastern Division and leading the Rams to the quarternals of the PSAC postseason tournament. A loss to cross-town rival Cheyney ended Blair’s inaugural season prematurely.

He made the leap into the college game from the high school ranks where he led nearby Downingtown High School to the Ches-Mont League boys’ basketball championship -- the rst title in school history -- in 2007 and a spot in the PIAA state playoffs for the fourth time during his tenure. Overall, Blair compiled a high school career coaching record of 173-78 (.689). Blair left Downingtown High as the school’s all-time winningest boy’s basketball coach. He was named the Daily Local News coach of the year as well as ChesMont League coach of the year his nal season.

During his collegiate playing career, Blair set seven individual scoring records on the career, season and game levels. His 2,025 career points stands second all-time at West Chester University and ninth all-time in PSAC history. The ashy guard was a two-time PSAC East player of the year (1994, 1995) and four-time all-league selection, including three rst-team nods, during his illustrious playing career. Blair was inducted into the Messikomer Men’s Basketball Hall of Fame at West Chester University in 2001.

Blair played semi-professional basketball with the Delaware Blue Bombers of the United States Basketball League for a brief stint, after his college career came to a close and was even invited to the Philadelphia 76ers tryout camp in 1996.

Blair received his bachelor’s of science degree in Education from WCU in May 2006 and is a certied Health & Physical Education instructor in the state of Pennsylvania. He completed his master’s in Athletic Administration from WCU in May 2007.
