University and Athletic Administration

University President Director of Athletics

Dr. Lorraine Bernotsky Terry Beattie

Dr. R. Lorraine (Laurie) Bernotsky was unanimously named the 16th president of West Chester University by the Board of Governors of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education (PASSHE), effective July 1, 2024. A longstanding champion for public education and State System students, Dr. Bernotsky is a first-generation college graduate who leads the largest *R2 institution within Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education. Prior to being named president, Dr. Bernotsky held the position of interim president of Pennsylvania Western University (PennWest) as a loaned executive from West Chester University. Known for being a transformative leader in higher education, Dr. Bernotsky is prepared to help West Chester University chart its path toward the next 150 years.

As a collaborative and inclusive leader who is centered on student success, Dr. Bernotsky holds nearly three decades of progressive experience in higher education. She began her career at West Chester University in 1996 as a member of the political science faculty. When the opportunity opened to serve as associate provost and dean of graduate studies at West Chester University, she competed in a national search for the role and served for several years before becoming provost in 2015.

As West Chester University’s provost, Dr. Bernotsky successfully led the University’s Academic Affairs Division, which oversees approximately 850 faculty and is comprised of six colleges, as well as two schools, that offers more than 100 academic degree programs while also housing the Office of Institutional Research, the Center for International Programs (now the Center for Global Engagement), the offices of undergraduate admissions, enrollment management, financial aid, the graduate school, and undergraduate student support services.

Executive vice president was added to Dr. Bernotsky’s role in 2017 and, as the University’s second-in-command, she also assumed leadership of the University’s budget and labor relations function.

Recognized throughout the Commonwealth as a highly respected and effective higher education leader, Dr. Bernotsky was asked by Chancellor Daniel Greenstein to serve PennWest temporarily in the fall of 2022 as executive vice president and chief operating officer, providing guidance and direction in all operational areas. From October 2022 through June 2023, Dr. Bernotsky worked collaboratively in this loaned capacity to help strengthen PennWest’s operational excellence, strategic enrollment management systems, and long-term plans for financial sustainability. The positive effects of Dr. Bernotsky’s work ultimately led to her appointment as interim president of PennWest on July 1, 2023 by PASSHE’s Board of Governors; she assumed the role four months after her appointment as PennWest’s acting president and following the retirement of PennWest founding president, Dr. Dale-Elizabeth Pehrsson.

Terry Beattie begins his ninth athletic campaign as the Director of Athletics at West Chester University and 20th overall as a member of the Golden Rams’ athletic department. Previous to being named the Interim AD in 2017, Beattie served as the Associate AD overseeing facilities and game day operations. He also oversaw all of the grounds and equipment room operations for the athletic department.

A 32-year veteran in college athletics, Beattie recently spearheaded the development of the Michael Horrocks Emerging Leaders Institute at WCU, which provides leadership training and development to a select group of outstanding student athletes who, as recognized future leaders, will be taking on the mantle of leadership within their team sometime in the future.

In his eight years as the university’s athletics director, Beattie created a Sports Performance aspect to the athletic department implementing additional resources from which WCU student-athletes could benefit. His collaboration with a number of other areas on campus gives student-athletes access to mental health and sport psychology experts, an expanded and much improved strength and conditioning program as well as education on sport nutrition.

His work in the field of Sport Leadership Training gives West Chester University’s coaching staff and administrators access to some of the cutting edge research on how to become a better leader, coach and mentor to young adults.

He has also served on a number of strategic planning committee’s both within the athletic department and in conjunction with the university. During his previous 14 years in Southeastern Pennsylvania, Beattie has chaired search committees to replace head coaches and assistant athletic directors while coordinating scheduling for West Chester University’s numerous athletic facilities. He has also served on search committees on the university side.

Beattie supervised the athletic department’s nine on-campus facilities, including both John A. Farrell Stadium and Serpico Stadium as well as Vonnie Gros Field.

A member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), Beattie was recently named the chair of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Athletic Administrators for the 2023-24 campaign. He has also served roles on the NCAA regional and national advisory committees overseeing selections to the NCAA Division II Tournament in a variety of sports.

ALL-TIME SERIES:

WCU Leads 37-15

Streak: W1

First Meeting: 1968 W, 59-33

Last Meeting: 2/3/24 W, 58-49

LOCK HAVEN (8-4, 3-3)

Head Coach: Jennifer Smith Career Record: (204-297)

Opening Tip... After opening PSAC East play with a victory for the second time in the last three seasons and the first time since the 2022-23 season, West Chester will look to start a winning streak today as the Golden Rams welcome preseason favorite Lock Haven to Hollinger Field House for the first of three games this week and the second of four in eight days. West Chester has been hard to beat at home since returning to action following the COVID-19 Pandemic, going 38-11 in 49 home games, including a record of 32-4 since the beginning of the 2022-23 season. When West Chester squares off against Lock Haven on Monday night at 5:30, it will be the 53rd meeting between the two teams in a series that West Chester leads 37-15. West Chester split the season series with Lock Haven a year ago, dropping its East opener on the road by a 76-73 final in OT before roaring back to win the second meeting in Hollinger by a 58-49 margin. This win in early February was a part of the Golden Rams’ 27-game home winning streak, which was halted earlier this season by IUP but not before West Chester matched Harding (Ar.) for the longest active home winning streak in DII women’s basketball.

Happening Pregame... Before tonight’s game, West Chester plans to recognize Michelle Kozicki again for scoring her 1000th point as a Golden Ram on Friday night at Shepherd. Kozicki scored 21 in the victory, including 12 in the second half, with 10 of those 12 coming in the fourth quarter.

WCU Women’s Basketball Notes ...West Chester (5-8, 2-4) opened 2025 and PSAC East play with a 68-60 victory over Shepherd on Friday night in West Virginia. With this win, which was powered by a pair of double-doubles from Michelle Kozicki (21 pts/12 rebounds) and Anna McTamney (19 pts/career-high 13 rebounds), West Chester has now opened PSAC East play with a win twice in the last three seasons with the lone exception being an OT loss at Lock Haven last January. West Chester scored 11 of the first 12 points and held a 13-3 lead at the end of the first quarter, but despite holding Shepherd to a season-low 26 first-half points, it trailed 26-22 at the half. West Chester erased the deficit early in the third quarter and carried a lead into the fourth. Still, it wasn’t until a late fourth-quarter run, sparked by a layup by Michelle Kozicki, which saw her finish through contact, that the Golden Rams took a 56-54 lead they would never relinquish. West Chester shot 43.8 % (21-of-48) from the field in the win, including 50.0 % (6-of-12) in the third and 60.0 % (6-of-10) in the fourth to leave West Virginia with a victory. One of the top free throw shooting teams in DII, West Chester, shot an uncharacteristic 68.8 % (22-of-32) at the line in the win on Friday. Kozicki ranks second in the PSAC in scoring, averaging 20.5 points per game, while her 10.4 rebounds per game is fourth best in the league. Anna McTamney is second on the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging 14.9 points and 6.4 rebounds per game as she also closes in on her 1000th point as a Golden Ram after scoring her 1000th collegiate point in a November victory over Holy Family. Ranking third on the team in scoring, Bella Mazur has been a great addition to the Golden Ram lineup in her rookie campaign, averaging 8.9 points per game thanks in part to four double-digit scoring efforts in five home games. As a team, West Chester averages 66.2 points per game on 39.5 % shooting from the field and 26.3 % from three-point range. West Chester also leads the PSAC and ranks in the top 10 in Division II in free throw shooting, connecting on 79.3 % of its attempts at the stripe.

Lock Haven Women’s Basketball Notes... Following an upset win over nationally-ranked Gannon just before the Holiday Break, Lock Haven (8-4, 3-3) opened 2025 with a home loss against Kutztown on Friday night, falling to the Golden Bears by a 68-66 final. Lock Haven jumped out to a five-point (19-14) lead after the first quarter but found itself on the wrong end of the scoreboard in the second (16-11) and third (19-14), which, despite a 22-19 fourth-quarter effort proved costly in the loss. Lock Haven hit just 36.5 % (23-of-63) from the field, including a 22.2 % (2-of-9) effort from three-point range, while also shooting just 66.7 % (18-of-27) from the free-throw line. Madeline Evans, who leads the PSAC in rebounding, averaging 11.9 rebounds per game, turned in a 17-point, 12-rebound double-double, while Jenadia Jordan led the team in assists with three. For the year, Lock Haven averages 70.8 points per game on 40.5 % shooting from the field and a 20.9 % effort from three-point range while also hitting 76.1 % of its attempts at the free throw line. IUP transfer Kiera Baughman leads the Bald Eagles in scoring, averaging 15.5 points per game, while Jordan is second, averaging 14.8, followed by Evans in third, averaging 13.1. Baughman also leads the team in assists on the year, averaging 2.9 per game, while ranking second on the team in steals, averaging 1.9 per game.

Up Next for the Golden Rams ... Today is West Chester’s second game in four days, as the Golden Rams also played on Friday night at Shepherd. West Chester is scheduled to play four games in eight days as the Golden Rams travel to East Stroudsburg on Wednesday night for a 5:30 p.m. tip before hosting Kutztown on Alumni Day on Saturday afternoon. The opening tip in this matchup is set for 2 p.m.

LOCK HAVEN (6-6, 3-3)

Head Coach: Mike Nestor Career Record: (145-190)

Opening Tip... Currently, on its longest mid-season winning streak since a 15-game streak during the 2018-19 season, the West Chester University men’s basketball team looks to push its streak to 12 Monday evening as the Golden Rams welcome Lock Haven to Hollinger Field House for its first home game of 2025. After dropping its first two games of the season by over 20 points, West Chester has looked like one of the best teams in Division II men’s basketball in recent weeks, rattling off 11 wins in a row to climb into the receiving votes category of the NABC and D2SIDA Men’s Basketball polls. West Chester will look to improve to 2-0 in East play and halt a three-game losing streak at home against Lock Haven on Monday night. After dropping all three games of the season series against Lock Haven a year ago, including a 100-76 loss in the PSAC Quarterfinals, West Chester finds itself in need of a win to halt its longest losing streak vs. Lock Haven under head coach Damien Blair and at least the longest streak since at least 2001. Despite the streak, West Chester still holds a 34-12 lead in the all-time series, as a six-game winning streak preceded this skid. Unbeaten (6-0) at home in 2024, West Chester has been very difficult to beat in Hollinger in recent years, playing to a record of 51-14 at home since 2019-20, including a mark of 10-4 in its home gym a year ago. Since the calendar turned to 2024 last January, West Chester has lost only three times in Hollinger, playing to a record of 12-3 at home, with its last home loss coming on February 3, 2024, vs. Lock Haven by the slimmest of margins (78-77).

WCU Men’s Basketball Notes ... West Chester (11-2, 6-0) remained one of the hottest teams in the Atlantic Region on Friday night as the Golden Rams picked up right where they left off in 2024 with a hard-fought 55-47 victory over Shepherd. Both sides struggled offensively throughout the night as West Chester shot just 33.8 % from the field, with only Davante Dennis in double figures with 12 points on 5-of-12 shooting, while Shepherd shot an abysmal 27.5 % from the field, including a 2-for-22 effort from three-point range. West Chester carried a slim 24-18 lead into the halftime break after outscoring Shepherd 14-8 in the final 10 minutes of the first half and never appeared in trouble in the second, stretching its lead to 12 midway through the second half en route to the eight-point victory. Averaging 77.2 points per game on 41.7 % shooting from the field, including a 30.5 % shooting effort from three-point range, West Chester has been led by Elijah Allen, who averages 16.5 points and 1.9 assists per game. Joshua Walker has caught fire in recent weeks after missing time due to injury early in the season, averaging 11.0 points per game, which is second best on the team, while also leading the squad in rebounding, averaging 7.9 rebounds per game, including a nine-point/13-rebound effort at Shepherd on Friday evening. Army-West Point transfer Dylan Blair has also seemed to find his footing in recent weeks as the sophomore guard now averages 10.8 points per game, which is third best on the team, along with four assists per game, which is first on the team and among the best in the PSAC. West Chester leads the PSAC and ranks second in DII in rebounding, averaging 45.0 rebounds per game, including an 18.1 offensive-rebound per game average, which is the best in Division II men’s basketball entering the final two months of the 2024-25 regular season.

Lock Haven Men’s Basketball Notes... Lock Haven (6-6, 3-3) halted a losing streak on Friday night with a tremendous second-half performance against Kutztown that saw the Bald Eagles erase a 13-point (39-26) halftime deficit with a 43-27 second-half effort in a 69-66 victory over the Golden Bears. Lock Haven shot 38.7 % from the field, including 15.4 % from three-point range, while also hitting 77.3 % of its free throw attempts. The Bald Eagles were outrebounded by 14 (45-31) but ended the game with a 25-13 lead in the turnover battle, which was crucial in the victory. Junior forward Kevin Coleman, who joined Lock Haven as a transfer from Wheeling, led the team in scoring, rebounding, and blocks on Friday night, finishing the game with 18 points, nine rebounds, and three assists, while Eli Washington led the team in assists (four) and steals (five). Entering Monday at .500 on the year, Lock Haven averages 74.8 points per game on 43.5 % shooting from the field and 27.3 % shooting from three-point territory as the 2023-24 PSAC East Regular Season Champion Bald Eagles sit in the middle of the pack as PSAC East play gets underway. Washington is first on the team in scoring, averaging 14.6 points per game, while Coleman is first in rebounding and third in scoring, averaging 7.8 rebounds and 10.6 points per game. Washington is also first on the team in assists, averaging 5.6 per game through 12 games this season.

Up Next for the Golden Rams ... Today is West Chester’s second game in four days, as the Golden Rams also played on Friday night at Shepherd. West Chester is scheduled to play four games in eight days as the Golden Rams travel to East Stroudsburg on Wednesday night for a 7:30 p.m. tip before hosting Kutztown on Alumni Day on Saturday afternoon. The opening tip in this matchup is set for 4 p.m.

2024-25 West Chester University Cheerleaders

From late August through early-to-mid March each school year, West Chester University’s cheerleaders are front and center at all Golden Rams football games in the fall and both men’s and women’s basketball games in the winter. Additionally, West Chester University’s cheerleaders have traveled to Orlando, Fla., and the Wide World of Sports in January to compete in the UCA Nationals. The Golden Rams Cheer Squad placed among the top five at UCA Nationals in each of the past four years, including a national championship effort last winter and a runner-up performance in 2023.

The cheerleaders work hard in the preseason learning mostly new material for the upcoming campaign, conditioning and developing a pride in the West Chester University community. Aside from preparing their 35-member team for the year ahead, the West Chester University cheerleaders also host high school clinics in order to develop cheerleading around the area.

The West Chester University cheerleaders take on many community service projects focusing mainly on breast cancer awareness, as well as doing many youth and high school cheering clinics, donating to needy schools and volunteering with the elderly within the West Chester community.

The team also makes many public appearances as representatives of WCU, highlighted each holiday season with a spot in the borough’s annual Christmas Parade.
