ABOUT WESTMINSTER Founded in 1961, Westminster is an independent, college-preparatory, coeducational Christian school serving students from preschool through grade 12. There are approximately 323 students enrolled in grades 6-8.

Westminster Christian School’s academic program challenges and empowers learners with a rigorous curriculum from a biblical worldview.

It offers a nurturing environment where exceptionally qualified and gifted teachers model Christian living and thinking. COURSE GUIDE OVERVIEW COURSE SELECTION

This course offering guide has been designed to provide parents and students with an overview of the Westminster Christian Middle School curriculum. Due to the academic, extracurricular, and policy information contained in this guide, its careful review is strongly encouraged. The school day for the middle school student is divided into seven periods. During the school day students will take two electives and the following core academic courses: Core Courses Bible Language Arts Math Science Social Studies These core courses will provide each student with the opportunity to develop a solid academic foundation. This foundation goes beyond acquiring academic content by also including the development of positive study habits such as personal organization, time management, and study skills.

Students are given the opportunity to choose two elective courses each semester. Elective courses may be semester or year-long and are offered during the school day. Choosing the elective classes is a first step in assuming responsibility for planning one’s schedule. Therefore, elective classes should be chosen with personal interest as well as with academic benefit in mind. Descriptions of these courses are listed in this guide.

ADVANCED COURSES

Westminster Christian Middle School offers advanced sections of Math for sixth, seventh, and eighth graders and advanced sections of English for seventh and eighth graders. The selection of students for placement into advanced sections is based upon class performance, teacher recommendation, and standardized test scores. In order to enroll in advanced classes, a student should have at least an A(90%) average in the current class and should score in the 90th percentile on standardized testing.

For a student to remain in an advanced class, he/she should maintain at least a B- (80%) average.

High School credit classes will be included on the official High School transcript.

COURSE ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM (CAP)

Information regarding enrollment in the Course Achievement Program (CAP) classes should be obtained from the middle school guidance counselor.

ACADEMIC EXPECTATION

To be academically eligible for interscholastic sports competition and participation in fine arts activities and extracurricular clubs, a student must maintain an overall grade point average of 2.0 at the conclusion of each semester. Consult the student handbook for more detailed information.

Life and Teachings of Christ Grade Level: 6

Course Description: This course explores God’s redemptive history in the lives of His people through the birth and ministry of Christ. The curriculum incorporates a comparative study of the Gospels, as well as a survey of the scene of Christ’s labors and the preparation for His ministry, the life of Paul, and the acts of the early church.

Old Testament Survey I Grade Level: 7

Course Description: This course is concerned about the how and why God chose His people. The subject matter includes thorough Bible education from Genesis to the death of Solomon and the poetic books of Psalm and Proverbs. Areas of study include the patriarchs, the exodus, the wilderness experience, the conquest, and Israel’s early history.

Old Testament Survey II Grade Level: 8

Course Description: This course begins with a brief review of the Old Testament from Adam to Solomon, emphasizing God’s faithfulness to His people through a covenantal relationship. It then continues God’s redemptive story with the Divided Kingdom to the Intertestamental Period. The course includes information on the kings and prophets of Israel and Judah, days of exile, and the return from captivity.

LANGUAGE ARTS

Language Arts 6 Course Description: In this course, students are challenged to become careful readers of a variety of genres including short stories, novels, non-fiction works, poetry, and drama. Students develop a growing appreciation for both classic and contemporary literature while improving their written and oral communication skills. Technology is incorporated into nearly every facet of the course. Faith is integrated into various readings and student compositions.

Language Arts 6 (CAP) Course Description: This course covers similar material as Language Arts: Grade 6, but at a less rapid pace and in a smaller classroom setting. Space is limited to 12 students.

Language Arts 7 Course Description: Each unit is enhanced with technology and creative projects, including firstperson performances in costume. Emphasis is placed on the analysis of literature and figurative language. The writing portion of the class stresses the development of vocabulary, mechanics, and grammatical skills to communicate effectively. Expository writing including the five-paragraph essay is stressed. Finally, students are divided into teams and are challenged to read a list of diverse novels in preparation for a Jeopardy-style reading competition.

Language Arts 7 Advanced Course Description: This course covers the same material as Language Arts: Grade 7, but with more detail and at a faster pace. Also included are literary studies such as J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None.

Language Arts 7 (CAP) Course Description: This course covers similar material as Language Arts: Grade 7, but at a less rapid pace and in a smaller classroom setting. Space is limited to 12 students.

Language Arts 8 Course Description: Reading comprehension, vocabulary development, research, memory work, and the writing of essays are all important parts of this course. The emphasis is on the in-depth analysis of a variety of classic novels, diverse short stories, plays, and poetry. Expository and persuasive writing including the five-paragraph essay are stressed.

Language Arts 8 Advanced Course Description: Offered for those students exhibiting superior ability in both the written and oral use of the English language. In addition to the regular curriculum, students will be required to read several classics, to explore various research topics, and to present knowledge gained through their research and independent reading. Poetry selections will be committed to memory.

Math 6 Course Description: Students review whole numbers, properties, and place value; decimals and metric units; whole number and decimal addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; data graphs and statistics; addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of fractions and mixed numbers; basic geometry; fundamental ratio, proportion, and percentage; integers; measurement; probability and introduction to algebra.

Advanced Math 6 Course Description: This course consists of a review of basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division skills. It includes solving equations, introducing the metric system, decimals, fundamental geometric principles (i.e., area, volume, surface area), and working with fractions, ratios, proportions, percentages, negative numbers, and scientific notation.

Algebra I Honors (1200320 – 1.0 HS graduation credit) Grade Level: 8 (Accelerated 7) Course Description: This course deals primarily with solving linear and quadratic equations. Major topics include algebraic properties, linear equations, lines, linear systems, word problems, geometric concepts, polynomials, factoring, square roots, exponentials, quadratic equations, and inequalities.

Geometry Honors (1206320 - 1.0 HS graduation credit) Grade Level: Accelerated Grade 8 Course Description: This course allows students to discover geometric properties by inductive and deductive reasoning. There is an emphasis on definitions, theorems, and postulates dealing with lines and planes. Two-column proofs written in various styles, congruence and similarity of figures, basic triangle trigonometry, geometric equalities and inequalities, simple logic, constructions of geometric figures, area, and volume are emphasized.

Math 8 (CAP) Course Description: This course covers similar material as Math: Grade 8, but at a less rapid pace and in a smaller classroom setting. Space is limited to 12 students.

Pre-AP Geometry (1206305 - 1.0 HS graduation credit) Grade Level: 8 Course Description: This course provides students with a conceptual bridge between algebra and geometry, deepening their understanding of mathematics. The course includes a unit on statistics and probability to support students’ understanding of concepts essential to quantitative literacy. Throughout the course, students solve problems across the domains of algebra, geometry, and statistics. The College Board specifies content.

Science Grade Level: 6 Course Description: This course deals with the dynamic interactions between living systems and abiotic processes on earth. Topics include: astronomy, zoology, the earth’s interior and exterior features, geology, and the nature of oceans and weather.

Life Science Grade Level: 7 Course Description: The major concepts taught in Life Science are: the metric system, cell processes, classification, microscopic organisms, vascular and nonvascular plants, invertebrates, and vertebrates.

The human body, its systems, diseases, and related nutrition will be a major component of the course.

Physical Science Grade Level: 8 Course Description: This course is an introduction to basic concepts of matter and energy as they apply to the laws of chemistry and physics. Major topics to be covered are chemical bonding, the atomic model, radioactivity, forces, heat, electricity, and magnetism.

SOCIAL STUDIES

World Civilizations Grade Level: 6 Course Description: Students will study Ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome, Medieval Europe, and the Renaissance and Reformation. A strong emphasis will be placed on organization, responsibility, following directions, and note taking. Students will develop geographical knowledge of the world through the use of maps. Students will study current events to become more aware of what is taking place in the world.

Foundations of American History Grade Level: 7 Course Description: This course presents a chronological survey of American history from the early explorers to the post-Civil War Reconstruction period. Units to be covered include Exploration and Colonization, American Revolution, the Constitution, Growth and the War of 1812, Jacksonian Democracy, Manifest Destiny and the Mexican War, the Civil War, and Reconstruction.

Citizenship & Modern America Grade Level: 8 Course Description: The first semester students will study the basic foundations and operation of the United States Government, as well as the responsibilities of Christian citizenship. Units to be covered include: the purpose of government, origins of American government, the Constitution, and roles of the three branches of government. During a two-week interval between Civics and History, geography will be emphasized. State capitals and locations will be identified. A project will ensue to develop the student’s ability to plan a trip, budget, and develop map-reading skills to process directions. During the second semester, students will study the history of the United States in the modern world (1900+). Units to be covered include: First World War, Roaring Twenties, Great Depression, Second World War, Cold War, Vietnam War, the 1960's, Nixon and Watergate, and here and now.

ELECTIVE COURSES OVERVIEW

ELECTIVE COURSE SELECTION PROCESS

Students have the opportunity to take two elective courses each semester. The administration strongly recommends that students not repeat electives, except for fine arts, study hall, or physical education.

For placement in the correct level, students need to contact the band director, the orchestra director, or the vocal ensemble director before completing their selection. Students enrolled in a music class will be required to participate in all public and school performances (both on and off-campus).

Students must maintain a 2.0 grade point average to be eligible for travel to competitions and festivals.

Rental cost of an instrument for guitar, band, and orchestra will be part of the course (approximately $50/semester for guitar and $125/semester for band/orchestra). Tuxedos (gentlemen) and formal wear (ladies) are provided for band, choir, and orchestra students. Replacement cost for damaged or lost attire belonging to Westminster will be billed to the student’s account.

HS Introduction to Engineering Design Honors (8600550 - 1.0 graduation credit) Grade Level: 8 Duration: Year-long Course Description: Exposes students to the design process, research and analysis, teamwork, communication methods, global and human impacts, engineering standards, and technical documentation. Students employ engineering and scientific concepts in the solution of engineering design problems. In addition, they also learn to use 3D solid, modeling design software to create solutions to problems. Prerequisite: Previously or co-enrolled in Algebra 1.

Automation and Robotics Grade Level: 6, 7 and 8 Duration: Semester Course Description: Students explore how machines have evolved from simple mechanical devices to today’s intelligent, computer-controlled systems. They learn how mechanical systems, energy transfer, automation, and coding work together to power everyday technology. Using the VEX Robotics V5 platform, students design, build, and program real-world automated solutions such as traffic light systems, toll booths, and robotic arms. Through hands-on challenges and engineering missions, students develop critical thinking, creative problem-solving, and collaboration skills. This course blends innovation, strategy, and design as students test their creations, refine their code, and bring their ideas to life. Students may participate in the after-school VEX Robotics Competition Club to further develop their skills.

Drone Engineering and Mission Design Grade Level: 6, 7 and 8 Duration: Semester Course Description: This course launches students into the world of next-generation drone technology and flight. Through hands-on missions and real-world engineering challenges, students will learn how drones operate, practice responsible piloting, and write code to complete autonomous flight missions.

Students will think like engineers, innovate like technologists, and collaborate like a competitive flight team. No prior experience is required. Students interested in taking their skills to the next level can continue their journey through the after-school robotics club drone team.

Computer Science Discoveries Grade Level: 6, 7 and 8 Duration: Semester Course Description: An introductory computer science course where students build their own websites, apps, animations, games, and 13 physical computing systems as they learn topics such as problem solving, programming, physical computing, user centered design, and data.

Flight and Space Grade Level: 7 and 8 Duration: Semester Course Description: The exciting world of aerospace comes alive through Flight and Space. During this course, students delve into the history of flight and space, discover the science behind aeronautics, and explore traveling and living in space. Students are then challenged to use their knowledge to design, build, and test airfoil.

Medical Detectives Grade Level: 7 and 8 Duration: Semester Course Description: Students play the role of real-life medical detectives as they collect and analyze medical data to diagnose disease. They solve medical mysteries through hands-on projects and labs, measure and interpret vital signs, examine nervous system structure and function, and investigate disease outbreaks.

Scientific Discovery Studio Grade Level: 6, 7 and 8 Duration: Semester Course Description: This course includes studying and exploration of crystals, rockets, and microscopes. Students will also explore crime scene investigation through the analysis of evidence by means of fingerprints, blood type, and many other techniques used by forensic scientists.

Art: Two-Dimensional Grade Level: 6, 7 and 8 Duration: Semester Course Description: Students create two-dimensional art from observation with an emphasis on painting using media such as, but not limited to, watercolor, pastel, acrylic paint, mixed media, and more.

Art: Three-Dimensional Sculpture Grade Level: 6, 7 and 8 Duration: Semester Course Description: Students create three-dimensional art from clay, cardboard, paper, and found objects.

Guitar Grade Level: 6, 7 and 8 Duration: Semester Course Description: Students with little or no experience develop basic guitar skills and knowledge, including simple and full-strum chords, strumming patterns, playing/singing simple melodies, 14 foundational music theory concepts, parts of the guitar, and ensemble skills. Students may be required to attend and/or participate in rehearsals and performances outside the school day to support, extend, and assess learning in the classroom.

Intermediate Band Grade Level: 6, 7 and 8 Duration: Year-long Course Description: Open to students in grades 6, 7, and 8 who have completed at least one year of instruction on a band instrument and have received permission from the band director. Intermediate Choir Grade Level: 6, 7 and 8 Duration: Year-long Course Description: This course provides an opportunity for students to begin expanding their singing experience and vocals. Focus will be on learning two-part repertoire, reading basic notation and rhythms, sight-singing using the solfege method, and developing musicality. Pieces will be chosen from many genres, including pop/jazz, Broadway/musical theater, classical, and sacred music. See Elective Courses Overview page regarding rentals and GPA average requirement.

Advanced Choir Grade Level: 7 and 8 Duration: Year-long Course Description: An opportunity for students to advance their musical and vocal skills. Focus will be on learning two- and three-part repertoire, reading more advanced notation and rhythms, sightsinging with solfege, and developing musicality. Pieces will be chosen from many genres, including pop/jazz, Broadway/musical theater, classical, and sacred music.

Intermediate Orchestra Grade Level: 6, 7 and 8 Duration: Year-long Course Description: Open to students that have completed one year of instruction on a string instrument. Students will be required to participate in all on and off campus performances. Prerequisite: Permission of the orchestra director.

Advanced Orchestra Grade Level: 7 and 8 Duration: Year-long Course Description: Open to students in grades 7 and 8 who have completed two or more years of instruction on a string instrument and have obtained the permission of the orchestra director. Theatre Grade Level: 6, 7 and 8 Duration: Semester Course Description: This course provides an introduction to the world of drama. Students will develop acting skills and concentrate on character development by working with monologues, in duets, and full scenes.

Advanced Theatre

Grade Level: 7 and 8 Duration: Year-long Course Description: This course is designed for experienced drama students. Students will concentrate on expanding drama skills previously learned which will be put to practice in Drama competitions, chapel performances, and a Middle School Spring play. Auditions will be held at the end of the school year to determine membership in this select group. This is a repeatable course.

Technical Theatre Grade Level: 6, 7 and 8 Duration: Semester Course Description: Theory and practice of technical theater with hands-on experience of scenic production, construction techniques, designing/creating costumes, and hair and makeup. Students will be required to participate in technical work, rehearsals, and/or performances beyond the school day to support, extend, and assess learning in the classroom.

Dance Grade Level: 6, 7 and 8 Duration: Semester Course Description: Dance students will focus on basic techniques, performance qualities, and working together as an artist and student. This course is designed to explore various styles of dance while preparing the students for a higher level of performance and training. No audition is necessary.

There will be a minimum of one performance for this class.

Live Production Grade Level: 6, 7 and 8 Duration: Year-long Course Description: Students will be trained to be audiovisual engineers and designers, utilizing industry equipment related to lighting and audio. Students may be required to participate as studio crew for chapels, assemblies, and productions outside of school hours. Prerequisite: Permission of the production director.

HS Spanish 1 (0708340 - 1.0 graduation credit) Grade Level: 8 Duration: Year-long Course Description: A formal Spanish course integrating listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills through vocabulary, subject-verb agreement, pronouns, and verb tenses. Student must remain in the course the entirety of the 1st semester; Grades earned Q1 and Q2 will be posted on middle school report cards/transcript and will be used in the calculation of middle school GPA, even if course is dropped. No high school credit will be awarded if course is dropped. Final grade earned will be posted on the student's high school transcript and will be included in the calculation of the high school GPA. Prerequisite: At least a B- in English: Grade 7.

HS American Sign Language 1 (0717300- 1.0 graduation credit) Grade Level: 8 Duration: Year-long Course Description: This course is designed to introduce students to the target language and its culture. The student will develop 10 communicative skills in all three modes of communication and cross-cultural understanding. Emphasis is placed on proficient communication in the language with introductions to culture, connections, comparisons, and communities. No high school credit will be awarded if the course is dropped. Final grade earned will be posted on the student's high school transcript and will be included in the calculation of the high school GPA.

Spanish: Conversational Level 1 Grade Level: 6 and 7 Duration: Semester Course Description: Introduction to Spanish comprehension utilizing group activities. Students will grow in speaking, reading and writing.

Spanish: Conversational Level 2 Grade Level: 6 and 7 Duration: Semester Course Description: Builds on the skills developed in Level 1. Emphasis on manipulating the language in a variety of communication styles and correct use of verb tense. Prerequisite: Teacher recommendation.

Spanish: Conversational Level 3 Grade Level: 6 and 7 Duration: Semester Course Description: This course will enable students to develop, maintain, and enhance proficiency in the Spanish language by reinforcing and acquiring skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, including the fundamentals of Spanish grammar.

Spanish: Conversational Level 4 Grade Level: 6 and 7 Duration: Semester Course Description: Emphasis will be placed on developing presentational speaking skills through oral reports on literary and cultural topics, current events, and personal experiences. Interpretive writing is enhanced through compositions using correct language structures.

Foundations of Law & Justice Grade Level: 7 and 8 Duration: Semester Course Description: Students explore the foundations of the American legal system and how laws impact everyday life. Students examine topics such as rights and responsibilities, the structure of courts, and the role of laws in maintaining order and justice. Through case studies, mock trials, debates, and collaborative activities, students develop critical thinking, communication, and decision-making skills.

This course challenges students to think like lawyers, analyze real-world situations, and understand how justice, leadership, and responsibility shape a thriving society.

Debate Grade Level: 6, 7 and 8 Duration: Semester Course Description: Students will debate issues and topics that are currently important to our culture.

Critical Thinking & Problem-Solving Grade Level: 6, 7 and 8 Duration: Semester Course Description: This course challenges students through fast-paced intellectual competitions, logic challenges, and strategic simulations designed to sharpen reasoning, analysis, and decision-making skills. Students engage in collaborative and competitive experiences that strengthen focus, mental agility, problem-solving, and strategic planning. This course develops confident thinkers who can analyze complex situations, think ahead, and perform under pressure in both academic and real-world environments.

Entrepreneur Experience Grade Level: 6, 7 and 8 Duration: Semester Course Description: Students will gain an understanding of the basic components of entrepreneurship while learning sound personal finance principles such as strategic planning, budgeting, marketing, networking, and investing. Each semester will culminate with students creating their own entrepreneurial business model.

Life Management Grade Level: 6, 7 and 8 Duration: Semester Course Description: A course that focuses on practical life skills such as etiquette, budgeting, succeeding at the stock market, entrepreneur skills, vacation planning, completing college applications, first aid, CPR training, nutrition, and cooking.

Leadership Skills Development Grade Level: 6, 7 and 8 Duration: Semester Course Description: This course equips students to serve their school and community through meaningful action and creative problem-solving. Students explore ethical leadership principles while engaging in hands-on service opportunities and designing projects that address real needs within the school community. Students practice critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and an innovative mindset to lead with integrity and impact.

Spiritual Leadership Grade Level: 6, 7 and 8 Duration: Semester Course Description: Students will be taught spiritual leadership training skills such as storytelling and communication, prayer, logistics 12 management, goal setting, art, music and design, and people management skills. Physical Education Grade Level: 6, 7 and 8 Duration: Semester Course Description: This course is designed to provide students with the opportunity to participate in a variety of team sports and physical fitness activities. Physical education is a repeatable course.

Esports Grade Level: 6, 7 and 8 Duration: Semester Course Description: Students will develop strategies and techniques for various competitive gaming titles in a wholesome, collaborative, and structured environment. Students will participate in lessons, exercises, and in-class tournaments per gaming title.

Guidance, Remediation, Academic Support Program (GRASP) Grade Level: 6, 7 and 8 Duration: Year-long Course Description: A program using cognitive and perceptual techniques to strengthen deficit areas as identified by outside educational evaluations. The goal is to allow the student to function more efficiently in the classroom. There is an additional cost for this program. Students must be approved for this class through the Guidance Office.

Study Techniques Grade Level: 6, 7 and 8 Duration: Year-long Course Description: A study skills class, incorporating organizational skills, self-advocacy, and monitoring of current classroom achievement. Space is limited to 12 students. Prerequisite: Approval from the Middle School Office. The student must have an LP on file.

Digital Media Production Grade Level: 6, 7 and 8 Duration: Semester Course Description: Learn basic digital editing on the Surface Pro using Adobe Pro Premier. This class will take you through the entire process of editing and producing videos, as well as transitions, titles, and effects.
