“HOW LUCKY I AM TO HAVE SOMETHING THAT MAKES SAYING GOODBYE SO HARD.” Dear Collegiate family, By the time you read this issue of the Connection, the past school year will be a distant memory. You and your family will be well into summer activities and, in fact, you may even be anticipating the start of school in August.

I am writing this message on the last day of May, my last day as the Headmaster of Wichita Collegiate School. The campus is quiet. The students have been dismissed. The faculty have said goodbye for the summer. It is a lull between the end of the school year and the beginning of summer.

It is special.

It is unique.

It is Collegiate.

It is said that, in every end, there is a beginning. Today marks the end of my time as a daily member of the Collegiate family. It has been a wonderful time for me, these past nineteen years, or the past thirty-three years since Debi and I sent our oldest child here. Collegiate has been our life. And, with no regrets, it has been a good life.

In what job can one work with such a talented and committed group of educators who dedicate themselves every day to being a positive influence in the lives of children? Faculty and staff who teach, who model, and who nurture the very hearts and souls of young people. Where else can one find such loving parents who unselfishly sacrifice to give the gift of a Collegiate education to their children? Where else can one find the sense of belonging, of being part of a family, than within our Collegiate family? It is special. It is unique. It is Collegiate.

A.A. Milne, author of Winnie the Pooh, wrote, “How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.” I feel that lucky, that blessed. I feel how hard it is to say goodbye to the Collegiate family. But it is a warm and heartfelt goodbye from a heart filled with thankfulness. I have been the one blessed by all things Collegiate. I take that with me and I will cherish it for the rest of my life.

Thank you, Collegiate family, for letting my family be part of your Collegiate family.

With this end, let there be a wonderful beginning. I pray God’s blessing on Collegiate and on each and every one of you.

FROM THE BOARD

RETIREES & INTROS Each year brings changes in the Board of Trustees. While we are always sad to see dedicated Trustees retire, it is exciting to have new, passionate Trustees join the Board.

Allan Dunne ’91 is retiring from service after nine years on the WCS Board of Trustees. Allan has served the Board in many capacities since 2010. He was Vice-Chair from 2014-2018, served on the Executive Committee, and chaired the Head of School Support and Evaluation Committee, a special committee that acts as a sounding board for the Headmaster. During his time on the Board, he also served on the Finance and Facilities, Trusteeship, and Development Committees, serving on all three for several years.

Allan was awarded the Randy Storms Alumni Service Award in 2013 for his significant dedication to Collegiate.

Joe Kirmser served on the Board of Trustees from 2015-2019. He was a member of the Finance and Facilities Committee for two years before chairing a special Risk Management Committee to help the school assess and manage risk. Joe played an important role in helping the school update its physical security, improving the safety of our campus. Joe also served on the Head of School Search Committee and helped hire Mr. Nathan Washer as our next Head of School.

The Board of Trustees thanks Allan and Joe for their loyal and dedicated service to Wichita Collegiate School.

We are pleased to announce five new Trustee appointments. Julie Gentile, Mike Miller, Christina Shuart ’99, and Bill Voloch are all new to the Board for the 2019-2020 school year. Former Trustee Basil Hourani is also returning to the Board after a year off. All appointments are for a three-year term. Welcome, new Trustees!

Julie Gentile grew up in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. She attended St. Cloud Business College and became a registered Professional Court Reporter. Julie worked as an independent court reporter for 14 years in Boston; Cleveland; London, England; Connecticut; and New York on a wide range of legal cases. She and her husband Tom have three children. One is in college and the other two are current WCS students.

Julie has served on the Board of Trustees for the Cincinnati Country Day School in Indian Hill, Ohio, and the Board of Advisors for Greens Farm Academy in Westport, Connecticut. Currently, Julie serves on the Boards of Rainbows United and the Wichita Children’s Home. She also serves as a grant adviser to The United Way of the Plains.

Julie enjoys tennis, cooking, and reading. She also enjoys chasing the family’s two black Labrador retrievers, Gus and Gino.

Basil Hourani is co-founder and Executive Partner of CAPITAL7, a Private Equity fund focused on working with entrepreneurs and management teams of growing companies to provide resources and strategic guidance, management, and board direction to accelerate growth and raise brand awareness.

Basil’s prior experience includes 20+ years in the healthcare software and services industry. Basil served as CEO of PULSE, a national provider of healthcare information technology that he cofounded. PULSE developed Electronic Medical Records and Revenue Cycle Management software solutions, and was later merged with CEGEDIM – a Paris-based publicly traded company. Prior to cofounding PULSE, he served as the President and CEO of MEDCAT, a healthcare software solutions company that he co-founded.

Basil and his wife Patricia have two sons at WCS and one son at the SMU Cox School of Business in Dallas, Texas.

Mike Miller grew up in Bixby, Oklahoma, and attended the University of Oklahoma.

Over 25 years ago, he founded Mill-Tel, Inc., a telecommunications and lottery service company with over 100 employees. Mill-Tel is still owned by Mike, is headquartered in Wichita, and has offices in five states.

Mike is married to Shannon and has two boys at Collegiate. In his spare time, he enjoys going to the lake, auto racing, and anything that has to do with the Oklahoma Sooners.

2018-2019 BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Christina Hourani Shuart ’99 // As a lifetime student, the daughter of a long-time faculty member, and now as a WCS parent, Christina has been around Collegiate since she was a small child. After graduating from Collegiate, Christina went to the University of Kansas and then on to earn a master’s degree from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology with a degree in Clinical Psychology. While in graduate school, Christina worked at various schools specializing in helping students with autism reach their highest level of independence. She completed her Board Certification as a Behavior Analyst and is a speaker on various related topics.

After a year-and-a-half of Doctoral Studies, Christina moved back to her home state and began a career at Heartspring as the Coordinator of Behavioral Services.

Shari Male Powers ’85

Christina now enjoys spending her time with her three daughters at home and supporting her husband of ten years, Blake, in his law practice as a trial attorney. She has served as president of the Collegiate Alumni Board, board member of Ballet Wichita, co-chairperson of Holiday Tables for Designing Women (Mark Arts), and the governance committee of the Ronald McDonald House. In her spare time, she enjoys exercising, reading non-fiction, and watching her three daughters’ pursuits blossom.

Treasurer

Bill Voloch joined Wesley Healthcare as Chief Operating Officer in 2013 and was promoted to President and CEO in 2015.

Wesley Healthcare comprises the 859-bed Wesley Medical Center, the 82-bed Wesley Woodlawn Hospital & ER, and the Wesley Emergency Care Network of four emergency departments. Wesley services all of Kansas as a regional referral center for high-risk pregnancies, surgeries, critical care, and trauma.

Bill also was instrumental in the planning and development of the $28 million Wesley Children’s Hospital, which opened in 2016. Under his leadership, Wesley Healthcare has experienced the highest employee, physician, and patient satisfaction scores in the history of Wesley.

Prior to joining Wesley Healthcare, Bill served as Chief Financial Officer for The Medical Center of Aurora. He earned a master’s degree in Business Administration from Regis University in Denver. Bill has volunteered with the Rotary Club, as a Cub Scout den leader, and with the Multiple Sclerosis Society. He and his wife Juli have five children, all of whom attend Collegiate.

Tom Davis has been a guiding force, like a compass, for Collegiate. He has led with his character, using his own internal compass to guide us toward our future. His compass is anchored by faith, surrounded by respect, honesty, commitment, and wisdom.

“A compass is only trustworthy if the needle is anchored, and tethered to something constant and unchanging. For my dad, the anchor to it all is his faith, steady and unwavering. My dad has faith in the students – that they are worth teaching, molding, guiding, correcting, re-correcting, encouraging, investing in, and then letting go to find their own calling. He has faith in the teachers, staff, Board, and volunteers. He has faith that they are giving their best and that their best is very, very good. He has faith that education provides a quality of life that is worth pursuing for a lifetime, and that education is not self-serving, but that learning to think critically, independently, effectively, and thoroughly will make this world a better place for everyone. He has faith in doing what is right even when it is hard. He has a strong faith in God, and that our faith in Him will not result in disappointment but in a fuller, richer life. Dad, you have done a phenomenal job. Thank you for being someone of strong faith. Tom just knows what to do when disagreements set in, when people make mistakes, or when tragedy strikes. He is perceptive about what people need. He listens, he empathizes, and he cares so deeply. He is calm in his thinking and his delivery, and he is precise when he deals with the challenges that inevitably come when dealing with hundreds of people every day. Tom, thank you for the wisdom you have used in leading Collegiate, and for teaching many of those traits to the rest of us, including me.” // Shari Male Powers ’85

“Tom Davis was adding value to WCS long before he became Headmaster. In 1986, he was on the Board of Trustees and, after a few years, the Board had so much respect for Tom that they unanimously endorsed him to be Head of WCS. Later, many families told me what a great job Tom has done for this school. The amount of respect they had for him was remarkable.

More recently, because I have a 5-year-old grandson who just started WCS, I have personally witnessed the respect that these children have for this man.

Tom you have really added value and we’re awfully proud of you.” // Nestor Weigand, Jr. “Look up commitment in the dictionary, and you may find a picture of Tom Davis. His commitment to his family and his faith are well known; his commitment to the school is legendary; his commitment to the faculty and staff is inspiring. The entire community can see his commitment at virtually every event they attend. I was trying to decide recently whether over the years I’ve heard more “Turkey Tango” songs or welcome speeches from Mr. Davis – it’s a close call. My favorite is Tom’s commitment to civility. The world could do well by following his example. Tom’s calm, intelligent, quiet leadership style is exactly what this school needed when they hired him. It’s also why he will be missed in his retirement. His commitment makes him a unique and wonderful man. His presence will be missed but his legacy will live on in this wonderful school because of his guidance and commitment. He is and always will be first class.” // Hale Ritchie ’67

“Honesty is defined as adherence to the facts, sincerity, fairness, and straightforwardness of conduct, an uprightness of character or action.

Synonymous with honesty is integrity, which implies trustworthiness and incorruptibility. It would be hard for me to find better words to describe this man. I had the pleasure of serving as Board Chair through the first seven years of Tom’s leadership. Tom realized quickly the decisions he made had a profound effect on students and their families’ lives and he took ownership of every situation. Time and time again, I saw him always take the high road to do the right thing even when it was unpopular and difficult. That type of true servant leadership comes at a price, and he was always willing to pay it. I could best sum it up this way – when people ask me to describe an honest man, I say 'Tom Davis.'” // Charlie Chandler

At Collegiate’s core is a strong tradition of academic excellence. What better way to commemorate that each year, and to celebrate academic achievements and commitment to leadership, integrity, and overall excellence, than Upper School Honors Day and the Middle School Celebration of Learning!

At Upper School Honors Day on May 15, faculty and staff presented the following: • WCS Math and Science Award, for an outstanding senior in the areas of math and science; • Fay Family French Awards, in honor of Laura ’86 and Lisel ’90 Fay for students with the highest averages in each level of French; • WCS World Languages Award, for a student or students with passion for and excellence in the study of language; • Collegiate Humanities Award, for a senior distinguished by exceptional scholarship and interest in literature, history, and the arts; • John Evans Naftzger Award, for a senior pursuing post-secondary education in the visual arts; • Mandy Shoaf Memorial Award, in memory of Mandy Shoaf ’97, who tragically died shortly after graduation from WCS, for a student with an interest and talent in the Fine Arts;

At the Middle School Celebration of Learning on May 23, faculty and staff presented the following: • Shafer Dart Memorial Award, in memory of Shafer Dart, for a student who exemplifies Shafer’s qualities and outgoing, gregarious spirit; • “Golden Cs,” for students who exhibit exceptional character, communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking.

• Alice Virginia Knorr Scholarship Award, in memory of Alice Knorr, for a Middle School girl who represents a balance between academics, family, and social life;

Both ceremonies also recognize students who achieve in the highest percentile of their classes (with the Highest Scholastic Achievement Awards) and honor selected 8th- and 12th-grade students who most closely embody the Collegiate ideals of excellence, love of learning, participation in school activities, and a commitment to an ethical lifestyle (with the Headmaster’s Awards). WELCOME TO OUR NEWEST MALONE SCHOLAR! This year’s competition for the Malone Scholarship was fierce!

WCS interviewed six excellent candidates and, when the dust settled, one candidate rose to the very top: Carson Phelps.

Carson will be a freshman at WCS this fall. He attended Goddard Middle School, where he was in the gifted program and taking High School Honors Math classes. Carson is not only serious about his academics, he is also heavily involved in extracurricular activities. He plays the double bass in the orchestra, participates in Scholars Bowl and Student Council, plays football and basketball, runs track, and wrestles.

After visiting several schools in the area, Carson said it became clear to him that Collegiate was the best fit. “During my visit to WCS, I enjoyed the classes, was engaged, and felt challenged.

I felt that Collegiate would offer me a superior education and multiple opportunities which will prepare me for college and beyond.”

Carson hopes to become a biomedical engineer or an orthopedic surgeon. His interest in those fields stems from conversations he had with the surgeon who treated him for an injury to his right arm.

Carson learned he had been chosen as the Malone Scholar from his mother, Bethany, who had checked her email and seen our announcement video. Since Carson has been in Scholars Bowl, the video mimicked a feverish Scholars Bowl Championship between the members of the selection committee, in which the tie-breaking question was, “Who has been named the Malone Scholar for next year at WCS?” After learning of his selection, Carson said, “I feel honored to be able to study at one of the best schools in the state.

I’m excited about being at a school with like-minded peers, and instructors who truly care about student learning.

Education is very important to me, but so are sports, music, and building relationships within the community. Really, I am looking forward to the whole Collegiate experience.”

Carson won’t be the only member of the Phelps family jumping into the Collegiate experience with both feet. Bethany was active at Carson’s previous school, and she has already contacted Spartan Club President Todd Fox about volunteering with that organization. Bethany said, “I was proud and grateful that Carson was selected as the new Malone Scholar at WCS. He has always pushed himself to be the best student, athlete, musician, and member of the community.

It’s so wonderful to see all of this hard work and dedication recognized at such a high level.

Being a single mother, the Malone Scholarship means so much for our family and, as soon as we got the news, it felt like a weight had been lifted. I know that, at Collegiate, Carson will gain a world-class education that will prepare him for college and beyond. Carson has always been smart and athletically talented, but I think that the faculty and students at WCS will really challenge him for the better and bring his strengths to a whole new level!”

This year, Upper School actors took on a kooky, film noir spoof with A Lighter Shade of Noir. Trent Trowel is your typical gumshoe, searching the mean streets for crimes to solve and dames to fall for. He joins some of the world’s most famous detectives at the International PD Gala – Shirley Holmes, Jean Louie Phillip Eustache, and… Aunt Beatrice. But is this just an innocent gala? With a fabulous cast of actors, we kept the audience guessing every evening with this funny and high styling take on film noir - it’s a lighter shade of noir after all! Showstoppers Upper School By Matt Webber // Director Showstoppers 2019: Legends took place on Friday, May 3, in Galichia Family Auditorium. The show featured Madrigals, Bella Voce, Dynamix, and a dozen soloists performing songs by Aretha Franklin, Queen, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, and more.

Senior Zoe Corrigan lit up the stage with Whitney’s song “I Have Nothing, If I Don’t Have You,” while freshman Emily Mallard paid tribute to Elton John with “Your Song.”

The freshman guys from Dynamix performed the Beach Boys classic, “Barbara Ann,” and the ladies from Bella Voce peformed Kelly Clarkson’s “Stronger.”

The full ensemble opened the show with a “Tribute to Queen” (“We Will Rock You,” “Another One Bites the Dust,” and “Bohemian Rhapsody”) and closed the show with Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror,” featuring freshman soloist Fazial Valiandi.

The show was an absolute hit and a dynamite way to end the school year.

5th and 6th Grade Play Middle School By Emily Goodpasture // Director

This year’s 5th/6th grade play explored some of the traditional old Russian folk tales in a play called A Few Fearsome Folktales of Baba Yaga. In Russian literature, Baba Yaga is a scary old woman who lives in the forest in a hut that stands on chicken legs and who likes to eat children for dinner.

Our young actors performed four stories about Baba Yaga and discovered how several of the stories are very similar to other fairy tales they have heard before. With 34 actors and four crew members, we entertained audiences with three performances. Actors included Kathleen Brophy, Milly

7th and 8th Grade Play Middle School

This year, the 7th and 8th grades put on the musical The Addams Family. This story is about a twisted, insane family, where one of the members, Wednesday, falls in love with a member of another family. This other family is your ‘normal’ family.

With the help of Ruth Powell, our Musical Director; Sharon Garton, our Director; Andrea Purdy, who transformed the stage with unique choreography; and Chadwick Armstrong, who created our quirky costumes, the stage lit up with ghostly ancestors, crazy scenes, and big families. Their hard work paid off, as they put on a show that people described as funny, scary, amazing, and incredible.

Boys' Basketball Upper School By Mitch Fiegel // Head Coach When the end finally rolls around, I am almost always reminded of a talk I heard Billy Donavan (Oklahoma City Thunder Coach) give years ago about how painful it is to end a season before you want to. No matter how long you coach, or where you coach or where you play, it is impossible to prepare for it. One minute you are on that rickety old wooden roller coaster, on a great ride, and then wham—the ride is over. This season was definitely one of those rides, full of twists and turns that no one could have predicted or expected. We played the toughest schedule this season from top to bottom that we have ever played in our school’s history. But by the end of the season, we were a very good basketball TEAM operating to its full potential. We were playing at a Championship Caliber. At this point in my career, that last statement is really the only thing that matters to me.

To Bake and Fish, let me say thank you. Each of you, in your own way, provided this TEAM with excellent senior leadership. You have earned my respect.

To my returning players, the last two seasons we have been on the brink of excellence. If you want to get over the edge, each of you needs to up the ante.

We can’t keep giving the same effort and expect a different result. The sports arena is calling our name, but you will have to earn it, you will have to pay the price, and that is time, effort, and sweat, and lots of it.

Girls' Basketball Upper School By Brett Gunderson // Head Coach The 2018-2019 Collegiate girls’ basketball team saw some major improvements during the season. There was a new coaching staff in place and a new system that the girls needed to learn, but from the start the girls were determined to raise the program standards and they did. A few of the major highlights included winning more games in a single season since 2015-2016, beating rival Andale for the first time since 2010, finishing with a winning record in league play at 5-4, and taking 3rd place at the midseason tournament (Mulvane Wildcat classic).

Individually, the Spartan girls’ basketball team received many post-season honors. Senior Maddie Reed was named 2nd Team All-League AVCTL Division IV, All-State Honorable Mention by Sports in Kansas and the Topeka Capital Journal, and also selected to the All-Tournament Team at the Mulvane Wildcat Classic. Senior Abby Waddell was an All-League Honorable Mention selection AVCTL Division IV. Sophomore Maddy Mairs was named 1st Team All-League AVCTL Division IV and was selected to the All-Tournament Team at the T-Bird Classic. Freshmen Ellie Munds was named All-League Honorable Mention AVCTL-IV as well.

Girls' Swim Upper School By Katie Idbeis // Head Coach The Spartan women’s swim team had quite a splashy year! The girls took to the pool with great enthusiasm and worked hard during our early morning practice time. We traveled all over eastern Kansas competing with our small four-person team. Members included senior Elizabeth Meister, junior Hannah Rai, sophomore Skylar Haag, and freshman Maya Torres.

Skylar’s time in the 200 IM was an automatic qualifying time for State! Maya Torres finished 5th in the 100 Fly and 17th in the 100 Back. Hannah Rai was 26th in the 50 Free and 19th in the 100 Breast. Elizabeth Meister placed 29th in the 50 Free and 25th in the 100 Breast. The girls finished in 8th place as a team.

Skylar went on to compete at the State Championships held in Topeka the following weekend. In prelims, she swam right on her season best time and qualified for the consolation 31

The Spartans started the year on a great note, winning five of the first seven games, and finished the year 10-8. Seniors Trey Charbonneau and Paxton Meares led the Spartans. Close games defined the season, losing five games by one run. Five freshmen played a considerable amount of innings for the varsity squad this year, gaining a lot of experience for the future. The Spartans ran rampant on the base-paths this year, collecting 95 stolen bases! Boys' Golf Upper School By Kevin Reed '77 // Head Coach The WCS Boys’ Golf Team members were juniors Eli Graham, Nick Siemens, and Jon O’Hearn; sophomores Zach Burgess and Jack Herrman; and freshman Byron Knight.

The highlight of our year was our team score of 342 at the Andover Central Invitational. Our best team finishes were third at our League and Regional tournaments. Eli and Zach both qualified for the State tournament and finished with medals. Zach shot a 79, his best round of the year, to finish 7th.

Eli shot an 82 to finish 17th.

The boys worked very hard and were much more consistent than the last year. Well done, guys!

Boys' Tennis Upper School By Dave Hawley // Head Coach The 2019 WCS Upper School Tennis Team had a season for the ages. The team comprised 42 boys who faced the daunting task of replacing two incredible singles players from the season before. However, the boys proved to be up for the task as they narrowly won the 3-2-1A State Title, edging out defending champion Kansas City Christian by two points.

Leading the way for the Spartans was the doubles team of senior Max Wheeler and sophomore Luke Swan, who captured the State Doubles crown in thrilling fashion over undefeated Central Plains in the finals. Max and Luke finished the season 19-0. Seniors Mike Feng and Josh Fernandes finished 7th, and sophomore Grant Ramsey and freshman Charlie Dunne finished 8th and 9th in singles.

In all, the team won its four biggest meets - the Tournament of Champions, AVCTL 3/4 League, Regionals, and State. A glorious year!

Girls' Soccer Upper School By Jillian King // Head Coach

The 2019 soccer season marked the end of a very successful 4-year high school soccer career for 14 seniors. This was the program’s largest and most dominant senior class; a group that was pivotal in getting the young Spartan soccer team off the ground. Under the leadership and direction of these seniors, the team enjoyed more wins each season, more shutouts each season, and 3 consecutive trips to a Regional Championship game. Our JV team also saw a return to success this season, with more wins and more goals scored by our JV program since its inception. Between our two teams, our roster bolstered 42 players who have continued to help grow and improve our program over this past season. It is hard to describe the dedication and determination exuded by these players at each practice and game. They are the true embodiment of student athletes here at Wichita Collegiate.

Track Upper School By Troy Black // Head Coach The 2019 Upper School Track Team consisted of 6 girls and 16 boys. The highlight of the season was Jack Fox getting 6th at State in Class 3A Javelin. Jack had a throw of 157’ 9” in the state meet. What makes this even more impressive was that Jack just started throwing javelin last season and, in the first meet of this season, threw 111’ 7”, which wasn’t even the best throw on the team. A huge shout out to Coach Gunderson for coaching Jack and getting him on the awards stand at the state meet.

Most of the team’s members had personal bests almost every meet, which is almost unheard of. Many of the team had personal bests at the end of the season. The boys' 4x100m relay team – Aidan Walsh, Ryder Walsh, George Bunting, and Kobe Turner – missed out on going to state by five-tenths of a second. Another great result – Talia Flamini improved her 1600m time from the first meet, where she ran 6:47.7, to the league meet, where she ran a 6:17.5.

We had some good young kids and hope to have even more out next year. I want to thank Coach Ensz, Coach Elkouri, Coach Powell, and Coach

Gunderson for all their hard work with the kids. We have a great track coaching staff, and each one of them is very passionate about the sport.

Weight Lifting Upper School By Troy Black // Head Coach in his weight class but lost the tie breaker to finish 2nd. Nick hit meet personal bests in two lifts and his total; he had a 305-pound bench press, a 495-pound squat, and a total of 1050 pounds. Ben Brake was the State Champion in the 198-pound weight class and had a bench of 260 pounds, 475-pound squat, 285-pound clean, and a 1020 total.

WCS took seven athletes, five boys and two girls, to the 3A State Weight Lifting contest. All seven athletes did an outstanding job, with all of them getting personal bests in at least one lift. Clay Gagnon set meet personal bests in his clean and squat. Daniel Hechenberger set personal bests in his squat and clean. Colton Weaver set a meet personal best in his 3-lift total. Nick Herrman finished in a tie for 1st place

This is the first time in a very long time that we took any girls to the State meet and the first time that Bekah Harris and Liberty Sementelli had ever done a powerlifting meet. After getting over their nervousness, both girls excelled. Both competed in the same weight class and Liberty finished 2nd overall with Bekah finishing 3rd, only 5 pounds behind Liberty. Liberty finished 2nd in squats with a 205-pound squat and Bekah won the bench press with a 125-pound bench press.

We are very proud of these athletes and all their hard work!

Dance Upper School

The Upper School Cheer Squad had an eventful winter season! One of the highlights was the showcase “Rally in the Valley,” attended mid-February at Valley Center High School. This was the first time in over 6 years for WCS Cheer to attend this event. Over 40 schools from Wichita and surrounding areas attended and performed a custom home routine to include motion sequences, jumps, individual stunts, choreography, tumbling, and a stunt pyramid. The girls were so incredibly proud to perform a solid, clean performance – the best performance of their season. Of the 40+ attending schools, WCS Cheer was one of only three teams to receive the highest rank in every area of their routine! Congratulations on an amazing season, ladies! GO SPARTANS!

The Spartan Pommies had an exciting and fun second semester, performing original routines for six home basketball games. The Pommies also enjoyed giving some of our littlest Spartans an inside glimpse of Dance Team life with the Dancer’s Dream experience in early January.

The Collegiate Spartan Bowlers had another great season of growth and personal bests. Two bowlers had their very first 200 games, and our own Josiah Pfeiffer placed 20th at the Regional Tournament in Salina with a 560 series, narrowly missing the cut for the State Tournament. Not to mention that, at many of the tournaments, Collegiate was the team having the most fun. With the loss of graduating seniors Nicole Bledsoe, Lauren Caughlin, Nick Murati, and Londyn Phu, we are looking forward to our underclassmen starters stepping into those roles next year.

Congratulations to Joseph Gadalla for his 5A-1A State-qualifying Boys’ Swim season!

He placed 5th in the 200 IM with a schoolrecord time of 2:04.84, and 6th in the 100 Breaststroke with a school-record time of 1:02.95. Joseph also received 2nd Team AllState Honors. Way to go, Joseph!

The boys participated in three all-day meets, winning the Ark City Invite and the WCS Invite. Thirty young men played this season, boding well for the future!

Boys' Basketball Middle School By Joe Talbot '96 // Coach The Collegiate 8th grade boys had a great season, winning the mid-season Bishop Carroll Christmas Tournament and finishing second in the CSAL post-season tournament! There’s a lot of talent in this group that will have an opportunity to be very successful at the high school level!

The Collegiate 7th grade boys had a great season as well, dropping only a couple of regular season games and finishing second in the post-season tournament in one of the best Middle School basketball games I’ve ever been a part of! The talent is deep with this group and they are going to be a lot of fun to coach next year!

Girls' Basketball / 8th Grade Middle School By Zachary Freeman // Coach Congratulations to this year’s 8th Grade Girls’ Basketball Team – they won the regular season Catholic Schools Activity League (CSAL) League Championship 11-2; won the CSAL Holiday Tournament at Bishop Carroll 3-0; and took runnerup in the CSAL post- season tourney 2-2.

At one point, we had won 11 games in a row. The girls went 16-4 on a fantastic season. We lost a core member to a concussion in the championship game, but we went down fighting hard! Every player on the team played in every half of basketball the entire season. As their coach, this is a huge accomplishment and demonstrates the unselfishness and true team spirit that this group embodies! As good of a season as we had, I can’t help but think about how special each and every girl is off the court. The world is going to be changed for the better by this

group. I imagine, 20 years from now, this will be the team that set the standard to which I measure all of my future teams on and off the court!

Sixth grade girls’ basketball offered a successful way of learning and playing basketball. We had some ups and downs, but it was fun learning from our mistakes, and fun making memories. It’s different having two teams, but that makes it more challenging to come up with other plays so, when you play each other, you don’t know their plays. It is such a wonderful experience for girls to learn the sport of basketball.

Track Middle School By Tiffany Lippoldt // Coach The Wichita Collegiate Middle School Track Team had another phenomenal season! We had a great number of athletes out this year, and seeing a growing team is always exciting. Throughout the season there were a ton of great performances, personal records, school records and league records from different athletes and events.

As a whole, the track team did extremely well, especially against schools with bigger numbers of participants.

At the League meet, we competed against 17 other schools with promising finishes: 6th grade girls - 2nd place 6th grade boys - 4th place 7th grade girls - Tied for 4th place 7th grade boys - Tied for 3rd place 8th grade girls - 9th place (with 1 athlete) 8th grade boys - 2nd place

As I reflect on my year as Alumni Board President, I’m overwhelmed with gratitude that I’ve had the chance to work with our alumni and school to enhance the Collegiate experience. I’ve spent time on campus watching students practice in hallways, cram for tests, and showcase their musical and athletic skills. It takes me back to my days as a student but through fresh eyes. Now that I’m 15 years out, I see how truly lucky I am that my parents prioritized my education over everything else. I’m living a Good Life thanks to the incredible foundation Collegiate gave me.

Now it’s time to pay it forward.

This year, WCS awarded Linda Multhaup Bean ’92 and James Chung ’84 with Alumni Achievement Awards.

Linda is the Chief Clinical Officer and Family Practice Physician at the Community Health Center of Southeast Kansas. She attended Vanderbilt University for her undergraduate work and then Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences College of Osteopathic Medicine.

James is the President of Reach Advisors in Boston, MA. He attended Harvard University and Harvard Business School.

MENTOR DAY

This marked the 30th year for the annual Mentor Program, one of Collegiate’s favorite and most impactful traditions. Under the guidance of Lisa Schooler, the WCS Alumni Board ensured that each member of the senior class was paired with a local professional in his or her field of interest.

The program kicked off on February 20, with Justin Elkouri ’01 addressing an Upper School Assembly.

After graduating from Collegiate, Justin received undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Kansas. He began his career as Vice President for Texas Premier Resources, LLC, and then as an associate attorney with Porter Hedges LLP, both based in Houston, Texas. Justin then returned to Wichita, and serves as the Business Development and Legal Advisor for David Murfin and Murfin, Inc. At Murfin, Inc., he has been involved in businesses and transactions around the world.

Justin encouraged students to take advantage of opportunities while “young and free,” before life becomes more complicated. He reminded the students that their parents, teachers, and coaches are available every day as “captive mentors,” and stressed the importance of seeking their counsel and thanking them for their support and guidance.

Remembering his time at WCS, Justin shared a favorite quote from Coach Fiegel: “It’s good to have an end to journey toward, but it’s the journey that matters in the end.” Using his own academic and professional careers as examples, Justin told the students to be willing to venture outside their comfort zones when the right situation presents itself. He emphasized that, while it is good to have a plan in place, it is also important to remain flexible if circumstances change.

We hosted the annual Mentor Breakfast the following morning at Wichita Country Club. This year’s keynote speaker was Dr. Kristen Marhaver ’00. After completing her undergraduate studies at Georgia Tech, where she studied Applied Biology, Kristen joined the Ph.D. program in Marine Biodiversity and Conservation at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, conducting research on coral reproduction and ecology. Following a year in Northern California at University of California Merced, Kristen moved to the island of Curacao, where she runs a research lab

focused on developing tools and breakthroughs for coral reef restoration.

In her remarks, Kristen noted that, upon starting college, she quickly discovered one major advantage that her Collegiate education had given her over many of her classmates: the ability to study effectively and efficiently. As she discussed her career, Kristen gave the students a real-world view by speaking of not only the many highlights and happy moments she has experienced, but also the moments of doubt and worry. She explained that the peaks helped sustain her through the temporary valleys, and discussed the importance of surrounding oneself with a strong “tribe” of friends and mentors who will always be there to advocate on your behalf and offer their support. Kristen also provided a tangible example of how her experience as an athlete at Collegiate has helped her at key moments in her career. As one of only 10 out of 110 applicants selected to interview for four fellowship positions while applying for the Ph.D. program at Scripps, Kristen was understandably anxious as she waited to speak to a room of luminaries in the field of coral reef restoration. The sensation was identical to how she felt standing at the starting line of the 100-meter hurdles, and Kristen instinctively relied on her old track technique to settle her nerves: she imagined gathering up all the anxiety, “smushing it into a tiny ball,” and telling herself, “This is gonna rock.” Kristen explained that while the hands-on experience and professional relationships she had formed in college were helpful, her experience performing under pressure on the track played a crucial role in allowing her to succeed in such a stressful environment. She has used the same technique numerous times since, including before her first TED Talk.

As always, the Mentor Program afforded seniors an opportunity to shadow their mentors at work, giving them an up-close, “day-in-the-life” view of what they could expect to experience in their chosen fields. As in previous years, the feedback from the students was overwhelmingly positive.

Taylor Phipps '11 I am currently a 4th-year dental student at the University of Southern California (USC) and plan to graduate in May 2020.

I recently had the privilege to travel to Bocas Del Toro, Panama, to provide free dental care to local communities.

This was with a program at USC called DHOP (Dental Humanitarian Outreach Program). The objective of this program is for USC dental students and faculty to come together and provide quality dental care in underserved areas around the world. Over the years, this group has traveled to Panama, Cambodia, Nicaragua, Kenya, and Philippines, to name a few.

In December 2019, 48 students and 15 faculty members traveled to Panama to help the community of Bocas Del Toro.

My dad was one of the faculty members (a current practicing dentist) that joined our group on this trip. I will always be grateful for getting to spend time working and learning from him while sharing this experience together. This specific place in Panama consists of many little islands with boats being the primary means of transportation. This detail turned out to be a very difficult task when transporting all of the equipment, luggage, sanitizing units, and everything else that goes into setting up a full clinic.

In a few short hours, our group turned a community gymnasium into a clinic of 24 operating chairs. These chairs were used for procedures including oral surgery and extractions, fillings, root canals, and cleanings. We were all responsible for transporting certain items in order to arrive and depart with what was needed.

Our group worked for six days starting around 7 a.m. and ending around 9 p.m.

There was no air conditioning and the humidity reached 98% on certain days.

Patients were boated to and from the clinic on the main island throughout the week and they shared how desperately they needed dental care. During our time there, we saw 704 patients and provided 1,964 procedures. The free dental work given to patients would amass to $396,507 total.

Christian Hourani ’02 A “lifer” at Collegiate, I began at WCS in 1987 and graduated as a member of the Class of 2002. Among so many positive experiences and lessons from my days at WCS, I feel the most powerful life lessons learned were to set high expectations for myself and that high achievement can only come from striving for sustained excellence.

After graduating from Collegiate, I started at the University of Kansas with the goal of becoming a physician. That path would lead me from the Midwest to both coasts and back. I graduated from KU School of Medicine in 2010, completed a surgical internship at Boston University in 2011, and then went on to complete residency training in Internal Medicine, as well as fellowship training in Cardiology, at the University of Arizona. I then went on to Milwaukee to complete subspecialty training in the field of Interventional Cardiology in 2018.

With the goal of serving the community that raised me, I joined Cardiovascular Consultants of Kansas, a private practice group of nine cardiologists in Wichita. I am board-certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease, nuclear cardiology, and cardiovascular computed tomography. I treat all aspects of cardiovascular disease, with a focus on coronary and peripheral vascular interventional procedures such as angioplasty and stenting.

In January 2019, I traveled to Mexico City for five days to implant cardiac pacemakers as part of a medical outreach program created by Medtronic, a medical technology company based out of Fridley, Minnesota.

A pacemaker is often required for patients with complete heart block (failure of the heart’s electrical conduction system).

In the United States, the cost of a pacemaker is $30,000 - $40, 000. In Mexico, the resources (both financial and physician expertise) are often lacking, and as a result most of these patients would unfortunately not have access to this life-saving technology without medical outreach programs. In addition to providing a life-saving, free service to these patients, I received training on cutting-edge new cardiac devices made by Medtronic under the tutelage of expert cardiac device implanters associated with the company.

BUILDING A NETWORK The WCS Alumni Board, with the leadership of Doug Coe ’04, held a networking gathering for all local alumni on March 28, 2019. It was a great opportunity for all to connect or reconnect with one another in the Wichita area and over 30 alumni were present. The Board plans to host this event bi-annually.

Prove Yourself Worthy. Morgan Wilson Overman '96 has proven herself worthy.

Morgan was a lifer at Collegiate, known for her kind spirit and diligent work ethic. Her French teacher, Madame Jervis, lights up when she speaks of Morgan, remembering her being a joy in the classroom – poised and polite beyond her years – always positive and eager to take on the next challenge. She graduated from Collegiate in 1996 then earned a Business degree from the University of Kansas, emphasizing International Business and French.

After college, Morgan moved around the country, and then reconnected with lifelong best friend and fellow 1996 graduate Logan Overman. They moved to Kansas City, got married, and started their family while Morgan worked in advertising and digital marketing.

In 2010, they moved their growing family back to Wichita and became Collegiate parents. Logan and Morgan currently have two beautiful, funny, and inspiring children at WCS – Langley, an incoming seventh grader, and Torsten, an incoming third grader.

Today, Morgan has a successful career she loves as a real estate agent. She’s also an avid volunteer, serving on boards and making a difference in Wichita. She especially makes a difference for Collegiate students.

I witnessed her incredible leadership and passion for our students when she served as the Alumni Board President, spearheading the fundraising for the Upper School Innovation Lab. She’s also served as our Mentor Day Chair, Annual Fund Liaison, and a fundraiser for the 50th Anniversary Campaign.

Morgan can be seen around campus dressed up as Little Red Riding Hood for the annual Enchanted Library event, helping in Langley and Torsten’s classrooms, and cheering the Spartans on at sporting and arts events.

Morgan, thank you for inspiring your fellow alumni and for proving yourself worthy.

John Lewis ’79 John M. Lewis, DDS has been credentialed a postdoctoral Fellow by the Academy of General Dentistry. He was recognized in a robing ceremony in Connecticut this past July at their 2019 Scientific Conference. John is President and Partner of "Wichita Dental Group, PA." Edison Wong ’82 Edison Wong has been serving as a physician subject-matter expert on Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), the signature injury of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, at the Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center (DVBIC) for the last two years. DVBIC is the government organization in charge of developing official clinical care recommendations and promoting research for TBI in the Department of Defense.

Evan Rosell ’01 Evan Rosell and his family returned to Wichita in March of 2018, where he serves as Vice President of Projects at the Greater Wichita Partnership, shepherding the Project Wichita regional visioning process. Sophie Blackburn ’15 Sophie Blackburn graduated from MIT on June 6, 2019, with a degree in biological engineering and can't believe how fast these last four years have gone by!

Outside of classes, she has enjoyed rowing for the lightweight women's team, starting the MIT Puppy Lab to provide therapy dogs for students on a weekly basis, and exploring different fields of research. Her next stop is the University of Washington for her MD/PhD, where she will be working towards her dream of developing artificial organs as a physician-scientist.

Alexandrea Payne ’16 Alex Payne spent last summer and all of junior year interning at SMU Global and Online where she played a major role in rebranding the organization to include a new online initiative. She also assisted in bringing the inaugural Big Event, the largest one-day, student-run service project in the nation, to SMU's campus as the Executive Director of Marketing and Communication last March.

As a rising senior at Southern Methodist University, she will be a Student Representative on SMU's Board of Trustees in addition to being SMU's Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) President. Her summer will be spent interning at March & McLennan Agency in their marketing sector in Dallas, Texas.

Patrons of the Arts

Spartan Club is a parent volunteer booster organization with the mission to promote school and community spirit across the WCS campus. Through Concession Sales, the Activities Guide, Membership Dues and Parking Passes, and Shirt Shack, Spartan Club raised over $51,000 during the 2018/2019 school year. The efforts of our volunteers allowed Spartan Club to fund the following projects:

One of Patrons’ main fundraisers is reserved seating at the Annual Thanksgiving Concert. We received another high level of reserved seating this past year, which enabled us to respond generously to various faculty requests. Some of the items funded over the last two years include: • Middle School – Additional concert band items along with some software for the MS Mac Lab computers; • Upper School – New microphones in Galichia Family Auditorium, two new cameras for photography classes.

Collegiate Association of Parents (CAP) Collegiate Association of Parents (CAP) had another busy, fun and successful year, funding over $31,000 in campus wide wish list items! Through their eight fundraisers, CAP supported WCS faculty, staff, and administrators by providing new learning tools like: • Early Childhood: Library shelves, CPR and firstaid mannequins and defibrillator training, STEM workbench, playground equipment, lunchroom furniture, and $5,000 for the Early Childhood Playground Project (4th year of a 5-year pledge).

• Lower School: Science beakers, Kindness Crew books, map stencils and supplies, tiled math cards, sensory tools.

• Middle School: Science classroom sound system, printer, microphones, laser projector, “Cue Robot” curriculum tools.

• Upper School: Learning Lab printer, solar greenhouse design course, tower garden, TI-Nspire NON-CAS calculators, breathalyzer pieces, flat-file storage for art classes.

Since its inception, CAP has given over $1 million dollars back to WCS classrooms through the granting of teachers’ Wish List items.

Parents Supporting Science Parents Supporting Science would like to thank everyone in the WCS community who supported us through memberships and trash bag purchases this year.
