Season Review

Cheer:

With Winter Sports Season coming to a close, the Spartan Voice Team decided to highlight the amazing seasons our Cheerleading, Girls Basketball, Swimming, and Bowling teams have had this year!

“US Spartan Cheerleaders had an amazing, busy week of performances a few weeks ago! We had our first showcase on Febuary 21st at Valley Center High School... “Rally in the Valley”. 25+ teams, from Wichita & surrounding areas, attend this showcase to show their best skills. It was our best performance all year! We also had the opportunity to perform the same routine for our home crowd during half-time of the Boys’ Varsity game. It was another stellar show! SO PROUD of our Spartan Cheerleaders & how hard they work for our school.

As our season comes to a close, the cheer team is ready to wind down and get ready for a great season next year. *THANK YOU* Spartan Cheer Fam & all who came out to support us!!!”

Basketball:

The girls basketball team had a great season this year. The team was lead by the strong leadership duo of seniors Haley Allen and Ellie Munds. The played a tough play off game in their first round aganist Nickerson. Congrats to our Spartan girls basketball team on a well played season!

Swimming:

Our Spartan swim team had am amazing season this year and phenomenal performance at state!

A few of these accomplishments include the team taking 3rd place in the 5-4-3-2-1A State Tournament and setting new state record in the 200-yard freestyle at prelims with a time of 1:26.10, in a relay swum by Derek Yang, Paul Mines, Joseph Gadalla, and Adam Sandid. In the 200-yard relay Paul Mines and Harry Ling took 11th and 13th place, and Adam Sandid set a new state record in this event! Additionly, in the 50-yard freestyle Derek Yang took 3rd place and Evan Yang took 13th in the 200-yard individual medley. Collegiate also ended the meet with a 6th place finish in the 400-yard freestyle swam by Paul Mines, Charlie Nolan, Harry Ling, and Evan Yang.

In addition to these accomplishments, Adam Sandid and Derek Yang were nominated 1st team all-state.

Joseph Gadalla was nominated 2nd team all-state and Adam Sandid was awarded athlete of the meet!

Congratulations to our Spartan Swim team on an outstanding season!

Bowling:

The Bowling season ended this year on Wednesday, February 23rd. The season was exciting for many new bowlers who decided to come out and bowl for the first time this year. Many people set up new personal records as the season went by.

Thank you to everyone who came out and supported the team this year! We are so grateful for students and staff who decided to cheer everyone on at tournaments.

District State Band ten Recognized Muscians

The Wichita Collegiate #BandFam has done it again this year! All-District Musicians from across the state of Kansas gathered in Salina to audition live for the KMEA All-State Band, Orchestra, and Jazz Band. Each of these highly skilled students had to play a chromatic scale, a randomly selected Major scale, a portion of a prepared excerpt, and a piece of music they had never seen before in front of a panel of judges. Of the several musicians who auditioned for the All-State Bands this year, KMEA recognized a whopping ten Wichita Collegiate students for their outstanding playing abilities.

Getting accepted into the All-State ensembles was not the end of the journey for these musicians. The recognized players had to attend multiple practice sessions that sometimes spanned several hours. Their dedication and hard work did not go unrecognized, however. On February 26th, seven recognized Collegiate students performed at Century II in the KMEA All-State Band and Orchestra! Congratulations #BandFam!

scholastic AWARD WINNERS

The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards competition is the longest running (over 100 years old) and most prestigious award and scholarship program in the nation for creative students in grades 7-12.

Professional artists, writers and educators jury the exhibit and award a limited number of Gold Keys, Silver Keys, and Honorable Mentions from more than 300,000 entries nationwide. Students who receive Gold Key Awards for individual works and portfolios go on to the national competition and are automatically considered for national awards. This year, Collegiate had an impressive number of awards winners, (40+). Madeleine Albert, this year’s only Gold key six-piece Portfolio award winner, will be competing at the national level for a $10,000 scholarship.

Forensics & scholars bowl UPDATES

The debate season has finally wrapped up this January! Satvik Kolla, Ayaan Parikh, Christopher Henry, and Mark Fang were the 4-speaker 321A Champions. Joseph Gadalla and Daniel Hechenberger were the 2-speaker 321 Champions.

Katherine Grace and Emma Mantovani were the 2-speaker 321A runner-ups! Now the Speech and Debate team is in full forensics season! There have already been quite a few state qualifications: Extemperaneous Speaking: Avi Yendru, D. Ngungiri, Satvik Kolla, Ayaan Parikh, Iya Wakil Impromptu: S. Miller, Will Meyer Poetry: Ayaan Parikh POI: Katherine Grace Prose: Rebekah Miller The Collegiate Scholars Bowl Team has once again won another state title, bringing home another plaque after competing at state on February 12th. This is the sixth consecutive year that Collegiate has won a state title. After being resilient despite a loss in qualifying to Frontenac, this team managed to win in the finals 5-0, making their total yield that day 9-1 in the tournament. Including this year’s state title, Collegiate has won four straight 3A championships on top of their two 4A championship wins back in 2017 and 2018.

The team this year was made up of Wichita Collegiate Scholars Bowl members (from left to right) senior Christopher Henry, junior Satvik Kolla, sophomore Conner Schupbach, sophomore Rahul Madhavan, junior Tyler MacKenzie, freshman Hannah Ternes, and Coach Peter DeVries. Coach DeVries said that in the past nine years of Collegiate Scholars Bowl history, this team has got to be one of the youngest teams taken to state, noting that Chris Henry was the only senior on the team; meanwhile, this was Hannah Ternes’s first year as she is a current freshman. This group of people have worked incredibly hard since the beginning of the school year competing in tournaments all around the state. Each individual brings a different aspect to the team that is integral towards the composition of it. Five members will return next year and hopefully make it seven consecutive state title wins for Collegiate History. Coach DeVries ends the season off looking forward to the future with a positive outlook on how the team will do next season.

Play Preview:

-------- Leaving Iowa

The time for the long-awaited upper school play has finally arrived. It has been decided that Collegiate will showcase Leaving Iowa: The Comedy about Family Vacations this year. Auditions happened earlier this week, and I am sure that we are all anticipating the final cast list. In the meantime, if you do not already know, Leaving Iowa is a family-friendly comedy that depicts an alarmingly realistic family road trip. The play tells the journey of Don Browning, a middle-aged writer who travels across Iowa searching for a fitting place to rest his father’s ashes after discovering his childhood home has been turned into a grocery store.

All State Band

While searching through Iowa, Don revisits memories of his youth and the audience gets to see how he deals with a reconciliation between his past and present. While portraying the more serious topic of how a son grapples with the death of his father, this play also has satirical overtones of riotous family car rides, sibling rivalry, lame vacation destinations, and much more.

Littlest Heroes

........Prom........

Wichita’s Littlest Heroes in a nonprofit organization here in Wichita that helps families who are suffering from life threatening medical conditions. Oftentimes, these medical conditions take a toll on the whole entire family of who is affected, not just the one person. The community at Wichita’s Littlest Heroes believes that “No one should fight alone,” so they provide that support that these families need during those tough times. One way that they do this is by giving the families of these Littlest Heroes children opportunities to make the best memories possible with them. Wichita’s Littlest Heroes hosts events every month to give families a chance to connect through their battles. Their upcoming event is a Wichita’s Littlest Heroes prom that will take place at our very own school, Wichita Collegiate School.

Join us on Saturday, March 26 to come help host this prom and make great memories with the Littlest Heroes.

The prom is ages 10 to 18, so please come along if you are around that age range, and invite some of your friends as well. “The Greatest Hero Prom” this year is carnival themed, going along the movie title of The Greatest Showman.

We need people to help set up decorations, be on the dance crew, run photobooths, simply hang out with the heroes, clean up after the event, and more. 80 to 90 Collegiate student volunteers are needed for this event, so please sign up if you available using the link or QR code (located on the right bottom corner of this page): https://www.signupgenius.com/go/60b0f49aeac2fa2fa7-wichitas

There will be food trucks, snow cones, cotton candy, cupcakes, carnival games, and so much more. That means prom dresses and suits are the most appropriate because, keep in mind, most volunteers will be out on the dance floor interacting with everyone else at this event, so they have to look and act the part. A Student’s View of the PANDEMIC There is no denying the physical impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic. Masks out of stock, hospitals overflowing, and a tragic loss of life are evidence of the toll it took on humanity.

Studies have begun examining the mental health effects of the pandemic, but what have the emotional impacts been like for us, specifically as students?

Most people trace their final day of normalcy to March 13, 2020. I remember washing my hands after enjoying Crepe Day, an annual tradition for French students, when a junior informed me we would be going virtual for two weeks. “Cool!” I thought to myself. School from bed, less formal tests, and for me, a brief break from my hour-long commute. The ending of sophomore year was a dream. I was able to take my AP Exam from home. I could wake up two minutes before class started, and my 16th birthday was free from the stress of finals. From an emotional standpoint, I could not see what the big deal was.

As a senior, I now realize how devastating those losses were for many.

Looking forward to the end of the year, I cannot comprehend losing all the events I have looked forward to since I started at Collegiate freshman year. No prom. No senior banquet. No conventional graduation. All the things that capstone 12+ years of academic work were diminished or eradicated completely, and it happened entirely without warning.

The graduating class of 2020 was simply unlucky.

Now, I have tried to reflect on my high school experience. There are obvious impacts from the pandemic. I’m not the best at geometry because it was cut short. I don’t remember the last time I walked through the halls and did not see a mask in sight. My concept of time is nearly nonexistent. Freshman and sophomore year feel like they happened just the other day, but they are also very distant. I do not know what it is supposed to feel like to look back at your high school years, but I know my memories of them are unconventional.

By taking a step back, I have been able to acknowledge the surreality of the last two years. It is okay to feel sad that you missed out. It is okay to feel grateful that you lucked out on some stuff. It is okay to not know how you feel at all. Everyone has lost something different, and you should acknowledge your losses. Your grief is valid and it is not comparable to anyone else’s. The heaviest grief is always your own. There is no need to compare your losses to others. Just be mindful that everyone experienced something different.

On the contrary, celebrate your gains. I know I took the time to reevaluate what I want out of my life, and while I certainly do not have it all figured out, I steered myself onto a better course. Maybe the pandemic finally gave you time to learn a new skill. Maybe you had the chance to heal relationships with loved ones. There are positive aspects of it, and it is okay to celebrate those!

Lastly, I want us to address the present. We are slowly creeping out of this mess. I want to encourage us to appreciate every moment going forward. Let’s celebrate that we have had a year of “normal.” Underclassmen, I hope that your remaining high school years are as normal as possible. Seniors, for the classes who could not, let’s enjoy every minute of our final few months together.

Books

This past January, sophomore Darcel Thompson started working with the Davidson Institute as a student ambassador to help bring her hopes of connecting people through literature to life. The Davidson Ambassador program gives bright high school students the opportunity to use their unique talents to create a community service project. Ambassadors attend seminars which have topics that range from website design to leadership. Darcel was inspired by her love of reading to start her community service project. Darcel noticed that in many conversations regarding books, people usually stick to surface-level questions. She says, “Sometimes, you don’t have to read the book to be able to have a good conversation about the themes of the book.” To bring about more meaningful conversations about literature, Darcel created a project that pairs conversation starters with books. This way, even people who haven’t read a particular novel will be able to talk about it.

Even though she has only been involved in the Ambassador Program for two months, Darcel has already started a pilot program for her project and has so far created conversation starters for seven early-readers books! By the end of her time as an ambassador, Darcel plans to create a website for her project and even partner with publishing powerhouses like Scholastic. She also wishes to expand from early-reader novels to chapter books to YA novels. Currently, Darcel estimates that it takes her about thirty minutes to write the conversation starters for an early reader novel. In the future, she hopes to expand her project, allowing more people to help her create conversation starters.

Darcel’s project has been well-received so far by her friends and family. Every time she allows someone to test her project, she asks them to give her any sort of feedback they have so that she can further improve her project. Congratulations Darcel on becoming a Davidson Ambassador and for creating such an innovative project!

A couple of weeks ago the Collegiate High School had the pleasure of hosting Sophie Beren, a fellow Collegiate Alum ’13, to discuss with the student body her for-profit platform The Conversationalist and her nonprofit TableTalk. Moreover, she discussed how to expand outside of one’s echo chamber and open your eyes to the view of others without discounting your own opinions.

How do you handle rejection when asking people to be on the Conversationalist?

“I try to be thankful and show gratitude towards them, even when there is rejection. Sometimes it can be taken personally, but it is important to have a thick skin and know that rejection is only redirection. It is important to stay humble and just really appreciate that they noticed our website”.

If you could have any person in the world on your podcast, POVz, who would you have and why?

Sophie Beren, CEO of The Conversationalist and POVz; Founder of TableTalk.

“I have a couple of answers…I WILL have Justin Beiber on POVz. I will have David Dobrik on POVz and I will have Beyonce on POVz. Those are probably my top three. These people are in my top three I think because of the influence they have on our generation. So being able to show that they are able to have a conversation and talk about the things that they are passionate about and share

How does your religion influence your identity in day-to-day life?

“I think early on as I mentioned earlier I did not want anything to do with my Jewish identity. I was ashamed of who I was. I would literally get so mad at my parents when they would not let me do something because it was like a Jewish holiday..

Fast forward I think the way that my identity has impacted me now is the way that I treat others. I think one of the biggest testaments of Judaism is how you treat other people and acts of kindness and I think that’s informed my approach to having these types of conversations and making everyone feel that they are valued and important and special and heard. Also, I think a huge tenet of Judaism is giving back and in a way, not that I am doing anything hugely charitable, but I think in a way I hope that I am giving back maybe some of my experiences to others so that no one has to feel the experience I had growing up. Everything I do I try to lead with those two core tenets of Judaism. And I think because of what I experienced feeling like I was the odd one out I never want anyone else to feel that way”.

What are the logistics behind starting a company and podcast?

“Forming a non-profit was very “stop-and-go”. There were a lot of hoops to jump through in order to get Table Talk up and running. The difficulties of forming a non-profit eventually led to the change from non-profit to for-profit. In a for-profit, there were a lot of startup costs to officially establish the business. Some of these were administration costs, hiring interns, and hiring a website designer. As time went on, more costs occurred as the business developed. We are just starting to monetize The Conversationalist after about two and a half years but it is a lot harder to monetize a non-tangible.”

How do you want to expand your platform moving forward? What are your plans in the future?

“Now that we are hopefully in this post-pandemic time I really see the brand being in the face-to-face space. There is such a difference between putting a perspective on my Instagram story and actually sitting down with someone and having that face to face. I would want more spaces like that so whether it is summits, meetups or etc, I think the brand will really thrive in the face-to-face space. So that is the vision. And if we are just going to put it all out in the open and manifest it, I really want to be the Genz Oprah. Like someone who is known in her career and everything, she does for amplifying the voices of Genz and creating that platform and that space to actually have those conversations and I think the Oprah piece is just being able to have it on a wide enough scale where hopefully it sways public opinion in the direction of being a conversationalist. So not getting people to agree on certain issues but having that mindset of being open and being willing to discuss these things. And hopefully having a big enough platform will be able to spread that message further”.

I noticed that you had a lot of yellow in your presentation. What symbolism does the color yellow have for you?

“Black and Yellow are a form of the new me. Gray represents nuance and yellow represents optimism, unity, and possibility. There were the WCS Colors before black and yellow, but I decided to change them. It was kind of a metaphorical way of rewriting my story of hardship, as well as blue, felt a little political”.

How do you moderate on your platform?

“On the app, someone on the team watches every text that is sent through the app in order to ensure that nothing is too bad. The team tries not to jump straight to conclusions, rather, they ask more questions”. It is a very informal moderation, somewhat like a Socratic style. Moreover, there are community managers who try to help those who violate guidelines understand what they could do better.

The concert featured songs written by Jay Althouse and the Beatles, among others, and ranged in era from the late 1600s to the 1970s. The Madrigal, Dynamics, and Bella Voce choirs performed songs in Samoan and Italian, as well as in English.

Last year’s choral classics concert took place at the First E. Free Church, but this year the performance returned to the Wichita State University United Methodist Church. Upper school choir director, Mr. Webber, said, “It was wonderful to perform in person in such a beautiful setting. I was so proud of the soloists who each made huge strides towards solo festival in April. The ensembles sang with incredible richness and artistry.”

Personally, this concert provided me with a sense of closure because the Choral Classics concert of 2020 is one of my final memories of in-person school prior to Covid-19. Though Broadway and pop music typically gets all the glory, it is hard not to fall in love with the magic of classical choral music.

The final Upper School vocal concert of the year, Showstoppers, will be Saturday, May 7th, and will feature contemporary pop music.

Pizza:

ANOTHER THING CLAIMED BY THE PATRIARCHY

A few weeks ago a survey was sent out, inquiring which chain pizza place is best. As I expected, no one could out-pizza the Hut. Blaze Pizza was a close second, with Papa John’s sprinkled in third. You probably thought these stats would be included in an article ranking different pizza places, but you have severely underestimated me. This is a critical, nuanced breakdown of the male domination of the pizza industry. The patriarchy has taken pizza, and it is time to find out why.

Papa John. Papa Murphy. Caesar of Little Caesar’s. They are all males. Think of Chuck E. Cheese (they’ll be more on his heinous crimes later). That is a grown rat-man that runs a business. A LITERAL RAT-MAN GETS A PIZZA PLACE, BUT THERE ARE NO CHAIN PIZZA RESTAURANTS NAMED AFTER WOMEN. Even frozen pizzas are male-dominated.

Digiorno’s was started by the Schwan Family patriarchs. The Red Baron graces the front of frozen pizza boxes everywhere. I was able to find 2 exceptions: Amy’s Kitchen sells frozen pizzas, and the famous Totino’s brand was started by Rosenella Winifred Cruciani Totino. Notice that the pizza is not named after Amy, and only Rose’s last name is referenced on the packaging. Apparently, if women want to be in the pizza business, they have to remain obscure.

It is no secret that the majority of industries are male-dominated, but why pizza? Let’s look at the history. Many Italian immigrants had been serving pizza in the U.S. since the early 1900s, specifically on the east coast; however, most of their customers were also Italians, and pizza was viewed as low-class street food. American citizens did not go crazy for pizza until post-World War II. Many American soldiers, which were primarily male, sampled pizza while stationed in Italy. They brought their cravings home with them, and a broader market opened for the cheesy delicacy. When the fast-food industry grew in the 1950s, pizza grew along with it. Dan and Frank Carney founded Pizza Hut in 1958, Mike and Marian Ilitch created Little Caesars in 1959, and Tom and James Monaghan established Domino’s in 1960. By the late 1980s, Papa John’s and Chuck E. Cheese were off the ground, and Papa Murphy’s would soon emerge.

Is it simply that men had more passion for entrepreneurial pizza endeavors? Because of wartime circumstances, they had more exposure to it; however, now that pizza is easy to find in the United States, women have had plenty of time to grow passionate about it as well. I’m sure there have been many women who pioneered the pizza industry that we don’t know about.

Let’s examine the product itself. Italian Raffaele Esposito is credited as the “father of modern pizza,” but surely someone else had figured out that coating bread with sauce and cheese was a genius idea. There is evidence that flatbreads with toppings were consumed in ancient Rome and Greece. Traditionally, men roasted foods while women baked them. It is likely that it was a woman who baked the first pizza to perfection.

At the end of the day, we’re never going to know when the crust initially rose, the first ounce of sauce was drizzled, or the first dash of cheese sprinkled. We can only speculate using the sphere of knowledge we have now. What I do know for sure is that I’m just a girl who likes pizza, and I have detention Saturday for not including Knolla’s on the survey. I’ll see you then, Señora White.

Club Spotlight Health Health Science Science Club Club Are you interested in learning more about a health-related field?

If the answer is yes, you should attend one of the many Lunch and Learn sessions the HSC hosts. Later this month HSC will also be making a trip to Newman’s Cadaver Lab to learn about the cadavers that are commonly used by pre-med and medical students.

Hosha Hosha HOSA this month is gearing up to compete in group and individual events. Although the tournament will be online this year, members are excited to put their hard work to the test!

---Hemispheres--Here’s what you need to know about Wichita Collegiate’s Literary Magazine! It was started by Sarah Chocron when she was a sophomore in 2019. Sarah saw that Collegiate had stopped publishing its literary magazine and decided to kickstart it again.
