Monday’s theme was “Color Day!” Each grade pulled up in their most vibrant outfits The seniors wore pink, the juniors wore green, the sophomores wore blue, and, finally, the freshmen wore brown The senior pink ladies won the hearts of the judges with their perfectly pink outfits! Tuesday’s theme was “Sports.” The seniors were assigned basketball as their sport, the juniors’ theme was football, the sophomores wore their best golf outfits, and the freshmen’s theme was boxing! The freshmen and sophomores required a tiebreaker based on the student body’s applause, and the sophomores were ultimately the winners! Wednesday’s theme was “Holidays!” Seniors dressed in their best Christmas/Eid outfits, the uniors looked very patriotic for their 4th of July theme, the sophomores’ Halloween costumes gave everyone quite the scare, and the freshmen wore their glorious green outfits for St Patrick’s Day! Sophomore Jamie Haan secured the judges’ votes with his old man costume!
Thursday’s theme was “Walk the Plank.” Everyone was tasked with dressing in their best pirate gAR(GH)b! Many students (and teachers!) participated in this theme It was a tough decision between the juniors’ costumes and the seniors’, but the swashbuckling senior Joey Kotkin’s makeshift pirate ship was too good to be beat!
You may have been wondering about the origins of this year’s homecoming week treasure hunt, and, luckily for you, I’m writing to answer this mystery It started over a year ago as the idea of a pirate formulated in the deep recesses of my mind Unfortunately, at the time I was only a junior representative and my idea for homecoming was shot down like a B 2 bomber over the shores of Normandy I didn’t let this major adversity stop me, so I waited and waited until the year came when I HAD POWER. I wanted the last Collegiate homecoming I experienced to be unique and fun, and what other way could I accomplish this than sending the school on a wild goose chase, digging up holes around the campus? I knew this idea would never come to life if I were the only backer, so I did what any logical man would do, and recruited the most swag members of STUCO: Conner Jones and Saad Malik
Once Pirate Homecoming was set, we formulated clues to lead the masses to the treasure!

Our rivalry with Andale is long and difficult. They’re our ultimate rival because they’re the one team that Collegiate has consistently struggled against over the past years The last time we won was in 2015; a hard fought victory, 46 45 in overtime. Since then, it has been a harrowing journey, with our team unable to topple the behemoth football team As we approach the Andale game again this year, our football team is working hard to break the streak
However, not all is dark The football team knows Andale’s weaknesses and is working on ways to exploit them
“They’re much less athletic at skill positions than we are; we can use that in order to beat them,” Carson says.
There are several new faces on the WCS campus. How well do you know our new faculty and administrators?
1 Which staff member almost named their orange tabby cats Mac and Cheese? (Ultimately, the names Mango and Clementine were chosen )
2 Speaking of pets, which staff member’s pets can be followed on Instagram? (@Tuco and Vader)
When asked how they felt about Andale, running back and safety Carson Phelps replied, “It might seem like they’re in my head, and I’d be lying if Andale wasn’t all I thought about during practice, working out or games Everything’s for Andale ”
When asked about what weaknesses WCS has that Andale exploits, PJ Enegren responded by saying, “We’re talented enough, but it's a mentality thing ”
The team was asked why they wanted to beat Andale so much, other than the fact that we’ve been losing to them for a while Hayden Malaise said, “The desire to beat them is because they’re the team in our way to where we want to go ”
Their mindset going into the game is “FDS” (Football Dynasty Series)
Andale isn’t an easy opponent, but the football team is working diligently and is determined to overcome the hurdle Whether they will or not, we’ll just have to wait and see
3 Which staff member does not have any pets at the moment, but used to have chickens?
4 Which staff member pursued a music degree before deciding to become a teacher?
5 Which staff member played baseball at the college level?
Kurt McAfee Athletics Administrative AssistantPJ said, "Andale loves exploiting our lack of discipline, mental toughness, conditioning, and physicality Our biggest weakness is offensive predictability
The Andale game is at home on Friday, Octorber 7th at 7:00 The theme will be cowboy
6. Which teacher studied forensic anthropology in college?
7 Which TWO staff members would like to be an eagle?
8 Which staff member spent two years in Hawaii starting a school?
9 Which staff member likes to spend at least a month of each summer camping in the mountains?
10 Which staff member includes “be weird” as part of their life advice to students?
On the first Friday of this school year, the juniors volunteered for Numana to package food for people in need Numana supplies food to families all over the world, but the meals packed by the juniors were sent to families of Ukrainian refugees spread out in various countries
After the fun activities of the morning, the juniors were taken to the commons and lined up at tables with friends Everyone was given a role in the packaging process One person filled bags with rice, spices, grains and beans Another person held the bags open under funnels One person from each group weighed the bags and added extra rice if needed Next, someone sealed the bags, and finally a packager put all the
finished food bags in a box that was given to the volunteer coordinator when it was full Students made a competition of trying to be the fastest group at packaging, which brought a lot of fun into the event Juniors ended up packaging 15,000 bags of food in two hours to go to families in need
In describing the new tradition of class retreats and service projects at the beginning of the year, Mrs White said, “We come here for education but we also come here to be a community It’s important that we realize we have many, many blessings and so our time should be given to those who are less fortunate than us.”
11 Which staff member attended Collegiate for 12 years?
Between picnic buddy day, the dance, and the game, homecoming is a big deal here at WCS, but it’s a huge deal to our performers, too. Homecoming day is when everyone teachers, students, and alumni alike gets to view the cheer and dance teams’ performances In preparation for the big day, I took the chance to speak to the wonderful team captains of our dance team (Shelby Lair, Kinsey Nichols, Michaela Strecker, and Makenzie Varenhorst) and cheer team (AJ Nagabushan) about their homecoming experience this year
Hopefully, everyone has seen both teams’ routines either at the pep rally or at the game The dance team’s choreography, as usual, was stunning and brilliantly executed, and being an Elton John fan, I was personally excited by the song choice, which is a sentiment our dance team captains shared The highlight of the cheer team's
routine (which is exciting in and of itself because we don’t usually get to see the cheer team perform a routine at games) can be summed up by AJ’s response to my question: “Pyramid!”
What I did not realize until talking to the captains was how little time the two teams had to pull that off According to the captains, the time constraints were the most difficult part of preparing for their homecoming performances Dance team only had six practices to prepare, which I’ve been told is normal, as the team is usually cycling through two dances at once This knowledge definitely deepens my appreciation for each team
Our dance and cheer team captains are very excited for senior night (October 14th vs Trinity), so come support them then!
Shall I compare thee to unclean gym clothes thy art more sweaty and far more stinky thine own odor repulses more than those who play in the mud and get all sticky
Your sweat drenches the seat you sit in now causing puddles wherever you may roam your once clean look now smudged like a cow and your own hair beseeches for a comb
School has just begun and with that, the 2022 2023 debate season has kickstarted! The topic this year is: The United States Federal Government should substantially increase its security cooperation with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in one or more of the following areas: artificial intelligence, biotechnology, or cybersecurity Satvik Kolla, the 4 speaker champion last year, said that it will be a difficult year but he is super excited The topic this year is an international one which means that countries all around the world will be debating the same one that we are here at Collegiate, which has not happened in a while We just had the annual Collegiate debate tournament Saturday, September 17th which we hosted and went very successfully The first tournaments will be starting at the beginning of October on October 8th Mr Egan says that he sees a lot of talent in both the novice and varsity debaters and he is pumped for a great season Make sure to stay tuned for more news about the debate team!
Spartan Sports by Connor SchupbachThis year’s Upper School volleyball team had very high hopes going into the 2022 season The varsity team was ranked #2 in the AVCTL III league in preseason polls, and they have certainly proved that ranking was not just for show Led by head volleyball coach Regan Carlstrom Wayman, the girls opened the season with an explosive start, winning a tournament in late August at North High There is no doubt that this year’s squad works together exceptionally well This synergy earned them a 6 game winning streak right off the bat As of September 28, the varsity team is 16 7 This year, the squad has three seniors The girls are preparing for the sub state tournament later this month
This season, two new additions have been made to the coaching staff Coach Zandler (Coach Z ) is the new assistant coach for the varsity team When asked how he would describe his experience of coming into the Collegiate volleyball program, he said, “Nothing but positive It’s been very welcoming, [I’ve] enjoyed every minute of it ” Due to the large number of girls going out this year, a freshman/C
team was established This has led to another addition to the coaching staff, coach Kathy Rukes The girls are undoubtedly hard workers, and there is an exciting future for our volleyball program
Meanwhile, the junior varsity girls are working hard this season, too In each game, the players are making improvements They pulled out their first win early last month against El Dorado, as well as beating them a second time at a home match recently Coach Nikki Hansson leads the JV team
Below are some of the upcoming volleyball games*:

Where can I find the best goth gear?
Have you tried Hot Topic, love?
What’s the best graveyard in Wichita to wander around at night while basking in the light of the full moon?
My graveyard expert says the graveyard on Hillside and 17th across from McDonald’s has a great mausoleum. However, I think that’s entirely subjective Your choice in graveyards depends entirely on you and you alone Don’t let me limit you to a single graveyard wandering experience You never know until you try them all!
What’s the best way to sharpen my axe?
What a great question for the wood chopping season! Heavy machinery like a grinder isn’t very accessible, but if you can get your hands on one, go for it! Otherwise, the general consensus is that a flat file is much quicker and much easier to use than a sharpening stone Always remember to wear work gloves and safety goggles, and work on a flat, clean surface!
My brother keeps disappearing around the full moon. He leaves his shredded clothes everywhere when he does Do you think he’s doing something illegal?
I wouldn’t worry about your brother doing anything illegal He’s probably just sneaking out to buy new clothes
How do I get blood off my hockey mask?
Blood easily comes off surfaces and out of fibers if you sponge it with hydrogen peroxide and scrub it with cold water Always remember to use cold water for blood! Most protective hockey gear is made of fiberglass and Kevlar, so the blood probably won’t stain It seems lately I’ve developed an allergy to garlic and maybe Catholic iconography. Is that normal?
There’s plenty of evidence to suggest that it’s possible to develop new allergies at any time! Definitely talk to your doctor about being tested for garlic and Catholic iconography allergies
Hypothetically, what would you do if you broke the laws of nature and created a human being out of dead body parts and brought him to life and he started hunting down everyone you love? Theoretically, of course.
Well, the answer to that is actually quite simple Think about it, it must be lonely being the only little fellow made out of dead people Have you tried making him a wife?
What would be the best Halloween chicken?
Perhaps a breed of all black chicken? That’s right, the Ayam Cemani is completely black, from the tip of its tail to its meat and bones This chicken is as dark as your midnight stroll through a graveyard on a moonless night. The coloring is caused by hyperpigmentation, which is where your body produces an abundance of melanin, and for the Ayam Cemani it is a dominant trait These chickens can reach upwards of $5,000 and are extremely rare. As such, I never thought I would get to see one in real life However, I went to the state fair and saw a beautiful rooster about 3 years old Ayam Cemani chickens are also thought to bring good luck to their owners and ward off evil spirits In some places they are even known as witch’s pets Considering these things, I think Ayam Cemani are the perfect spooky season chicken If anyone wants to go all out for Halloween this year and get one of these incredible floofs, let me know
gender or culture This means that the threat (whether it’s a person, an entity or an animal) should target our most basic fears, something that we can all understand, something primal For example, who is not afraid of being eaten alive?
Watch “Jaws” (Steven Spielberg, 1975) for more information.
Rule #03: The audience should never empathize with the villain He/she/it must be something with which we can’t connect or fully understand That was the problem with “Hannibal” (Ridley Scott, 2001) They turned Hannibal Lecter into a person with a moral code, not the monster that we first met in “The Silence of the Lambs” (Jonathan Demme, 1991)
Rule #04: Originality matters The movie should give us something new and unexplored A perfect example is “The Exorcist” (William Friedkin, 1973) which introduced demonic possession to audiences all over the world turning the film into a phenomenon
Rule #05: This is my personal favorite A good horror movie should leave you with the impression that those who made it are slightly (or completely) insane “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” (Tobe Hooper, 1974), “Suspiria” (Dario Argento, 1977), “Phantasm” (Don Coscarelli, 1979) or “The Evil Dead” (Sam Raimi, 1981) truly make you question what kind of individual was behind the camera
But it’s all a matter of opinion To make the long story short, to me a horror masterpiece is a movie that still haunts a long time after having seen it
I bet most people out there have a few titles in mind
Someone once said that a masterpiece is a work of art that starts a movement, inspires, and influences other artists to create similar works of art When it comes to the film industry, especially with horror, this means that a masterpiece is copied and imitated so much, that it creates a subgenre
But which factors do these masterpieces have in common? Are there any rules?
I am not an expert, but these are some factors that work for me after having watched quite a few horror movies
Rule #01: There are no rules Everyone experiences movies differently And the circumstances in which you watch them can also alter their effect on the audience I know people who fell asleep watching “Alien” (Ridley Scott, 1979) And others think that most of the “Friday the 13th” sequels are comedies
Rule #02: A good horror movie should have the potential to scare anyone regardless of their age,
By Johnny AbromeitHalloween is a staple during fall and represents it well with all kinds of festive activities leading up to it, but one thing that we all do during the spooky season is watch suspenseful horror movies I myself am not a fan of scary movies but Get Out is the perfect movie for those who want to be in season, and for those who don’t like over the top horror films One reason why I feel like this movie stands out from the rest of horror films is the unusual comic comedic relief Jordan Peele did a wonderful job incorporating some of his acting history and transitioning it to the screen without ruining the suspense in the movie due to too much comic relief or to obvious comedic relief I have also been a fan of Jordan Peele’s acting and comedy in the past, but I was interested in how his past translates to his directing career I feel like since he has had that background in his life, he sees things from an actor’s point of view that directors can’t necessarily see since they haven’t had that experience, which is why I feel he does a great
job with comic relief and how he uses it in a horror film It also shows how diverse he can be, with making a great first film outside of the typical horror movie film structure
Sr Trinchet says a good horror movie should have the potential to scare anyone There’s not a more creative example of this than Joel Schumacher’s 1987 supernatural black comedy horror film The Lost Boys The film is your typical 80s teen movie: a family moves halfway across the country to live on the coast, the older brother is peer pressured into evil by a gang of bikers, all the adults are useless, and everyone has a mullet Except this time, the bikers are actually vampires! The Lost Boys is both genuinely funny because of the humor written into the script and because it was so clearly made in the 80s with a budget of only $8 5 million However, the humor shouldn’t discount Schumacher’s creative and practical use of suspense Because of the small budget, Schumacher couldn’t afford to use special effects and makeup that would typically go into the more gory scenes, but that actually worked in the film’s favor; by placing all the violence offscreen, the viewer can only imagine what the vampires are doing as they listen along, creating a sense of terror in the pit of the viewer’s stomach Don’t get me wrong it’s still a silly 80s low budget teen movie and isn’t that terrifying, but it was a creative way to get around the small budget and still make a suspenseful film that’s perfect for the spooky season
How often do you rewatch your favorite shows? Are you the type of person who watches a show and then moves on, or do you rewatch them over and over again? For me, during times of high stress, I have trouble moving on I don’t have the energy to get invested in new character arcs and storylines, so I go back to my favorite shows Sometimes I watch them in my free time, and sometimes I listen to them in the background while I do my math homework Some of them I rewatch maybe once a year, and some of them I have finished and immediately restarted at least five times Here are some of my favorite shows to rewatch when I seek comfort
Arrested Development (2003 2019)
Likely the most well known series on my list, Arrested Development is the brainchild of Mitchell Hurwitz and follows a formerly wealthy and extremely dysfunctional family banding together after the patriarch is arrested for fraud While the star studded cast was originally what appealed to me, the hilarious omniscient narration and the clever running gags are what set this show apart There are some jokes that don’t pay off until episodes later, which send me cackling
every time Plus, it has everything you could possibly want or need: Will Arnett on a Segway Need I say more? The show ran for three seasons before it was canceled and later revived for two more seasons on Netflix While there is a drop in quality between seasons three and four, the Netflix seasons are still a good time and focus more on some of the popular recurring characters from the previous seasons. You can watch Arrested Development on Netflix or Hulu Community (2009 2015)
I watch this show constantly I watch this show while I do my homework I watch this show during my free time I’m watching this show right now Community was created by Dan Harmon (best known for Rick and Morty) with several episodes directed by Joe and Anthony Russo (of Marvel fame) With six whole seasons (and five whole good seasons) totaling 110 episodes, Community will keep you entertained for a long, long time The series takes place at a community college and follows a Spanish study group made up of an odd mix of students both young and very, very old. It features exciting, high concept episodes and introspective, contained character studies; one minute you’re watching Childish Gambino fight off zombies to ABBA’s “Mamma Mia,” and the next, you’re watching Chevy Chase struggle with his dwindling status in the study group, and both episodes somehow manage to be equally entertaining The show has a rather tragic production story; after three outstanding seasons, Harmon was fired and the terrible fourth season (deemed “the Gas Leak Year” because of how out of character the writing was) ran the show into the ground It was eventually picked up by Yahoo’s streaming service with Harmon back onboard I’m assuming none of you knew that Yahoo had a streaming service before now, which is probably why it failed and dragged Community down with it While seasons five and six definitely feel different in terms of direction and lighting, they’re still great and totally worth sitting through the Gas Leak Year You can watch all six seasons on Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime. #sixseasonsandamovie Pushing Daisies (2007 2009)
It took Pushing Daisies one episode to overtake Community as my favorite tv show ever When I inevitably become a supervillain, I will cite the cancellation of this show as my tragic origin story Every day I wish our world were more like the fantastical world of Pushing Daisies, where there are vibrant flowers everywhere you look, people frequently live in windmills, commonplace careers include scratch and sniff book author and eco friendly dandelion car manufacturer, and our lives are narrated by a silly old British man with an affinity for alliteration The series follows Ned, a pie maker with an odd ability: with one touch, he can revive the dead However, another touch will leave the re animated being dead permanently, and if he leaves that being alive for longer than a minute, another random being in proximity must take its
place He uses his abilities to assist his friend, private detective Emmerson Cod, temporarily reviving murder victims to interrogate them for one minute and hopefully bring them justice This system works for them until one of the murder victims is Ned’s childhood best friend and crush The show stars Lee Pace (those of you with immaculate taste will know him as Garrett from Twilight, but he was in the MCU and The Hobbit, too, I guess) as Ned, as well as the brilliant Kristen Chenoweth as waitress Olive Snook (They even give her musical numbers!) If you’re looking for something whimsical, hilarious, and oh so romantic, this show is the way to go You can watch both seasons in all their cliffhanging glory on HBO Max, and then you can be as sad about it ending as I am
When I first saw Joy Tea when driving down Central, my only emotion was hype Yes A new boba place bursting with bubbles and joy I love the word joy It’s so much easier than writing “happiness ” Darn it, I just wrote it Oh well
My first step inside was during the summer. Blazing hot day, a boba shop was close by, and my mind only drifted towards one spot My first step immediately made me fall in love I guess the emotion I felt then was peace It’s an adorable setup, with comfy chairs on the right side with cute decor on the walls Simple tables and chairs to the left It is masterfully sparse Joy Tea doesn’t try to make itself feel like a tea shop; it makes itself feel like home
We have to talk about the boba itself I mean, could you imagine if we didn’t?
It’s excellent, worth every penny The selection of teas to choose from is overwhelming; I almost always tick off the person at the register when I’m ordering.
Thai tea? Nah, I’m feeling fruity today Lychee? Maybe I could get a smoothie and combine a bit of both Ughh, I just want it all!
As these thoughts run through my head, I’m pretty sure the cashier wants to strangle me
(Also, you must know how torturous it is when you think you’re ready, begin to say your order, then stop The awkwardness is too much )
Possibly my biggest challenge was mastering the straw poke The straw poke is a skill learned through rigorous practice Just enough force to pierce, not so much that you spill everywhere Sometimes, I feel like balancing on a rope suspended 100ft in the air would be easier
But once the straw goes in, every sip is bliss Taking a sip of boba at Joy Tea just makes the feeling warm and cozy Which makes no sense since boba is supposed to be cold But it’s the atmosphere, the sense of calm and homeliness, that does it
If you’re feeling down and you need a pick up, physically and emotionally, Joy Tea is a great place to go
