FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL Dear Wichita Collegiate School Family, Welcome to our Fall 2020 Connection Magazine. I must say that it has been an honor to serve this community during the past academic year, my first as a member of the Wichita Collegiate family.

It is very apparent to me that this is a special environment; with students, parents, alumni, faculty & staff, and leaders who are excited to prove themselves worthy. In the classroom, on Zoom sessions, on the playground, in the theatre, or on the basketball court, this is a community that strives for excellence. Simply, Wichita Collegiate School can be a place where #SpartansThrive. And it must be.

A brief moment of reflection on what the past year has brought for our school. We navigated through what has been called a once-in-a-generation public health crisis. I am proud to have been your leader during this time tof technological and social change.

Our administrative team and community guided our school through our first semester in the world of COVID-19. This hard work undertaken by all has allowed us to create a plan should we need to be nimble during this 20202021 academic year.

While navigating a pandemic, we have been simultaneously engaging in discussions with alumni, faculty, and staff about diversity, equity, and inclusion issues that have come to the fore of all our thoughts. As leaders in the educational community, we believe that it is our responsibility to respond appropriately, and there is no better time than the present.

Though we have had programming to develop empathy and social responsibility, this is just the beginning of a comprehensive approach we are undertaking. We certainly need to do more. And that is an ongoing demand that is and should always be present.

With your help, we will equip our current generation and future generations of Spartans to engage in the heavy lifting of being proactive members of an inclusive community that seeks to serve all people with decency and respect.

So what are we doing? This past summer has been spent with our staff, faculty, board of trustees, and alumni working on a strategic plan that will provide structure to our initiatives from 2020 through 2025. No small part of that strategic plan includes our plans for an Institute of Social Impact, which connects and expands efforts to understand and proactively create positive change in areas of racial, social, and economic inequality. In addition, alumni and leaders at WCS have further developed the framework for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion efforts we began to spearhead last January. There is more about these efforts found on page 10.

This issue of our Connection Magazine does reflect a bit on our past semester; however, we are also making a shift to include feature articles that highlight our current programming and plans for the future. Wichita Collegiate Family, please do take your time to read through these plans. In some spaces, we are giving you the most up-to-date information we have for each program prior to printing deadlines for this magazine. These programs are being built with experts in our community, but there is also no expert who can help us understand your experience on our campus better than you.

Please know that our leadership team is always ready to hear from you.

Together we are creating a Wichita Collegiate School where each Spartan will thrive. I am excited to be a part of this change with you.

FROM THE BOARD Dear Wichita Collegiate Community, Welcome to the 2020 fall semester and to this edition of the Connection Magazine. I am honored to serve as your incoming Chairman of the Board of Trustees and I am grateful to the Board and to you for trusting me with this position.

As we proceed with our decision to open the 2020-2021 school year, I am confident that we have the right leadership team with our skilled and effective Board of Trustees and with Nathan Washer as our Head of School. As he finished his first year during an unprecedented and challenging year, Mr. Washer established himself as a thoughtful, proficient, and decisive leader. In addition, I want to commend our administrative team, faculty, and staff for their care and for their dedication to our students, especially during critical times last spring and summer, and for their strong support and relentless efforts to open safely this fall.

With a change in Board leadership, I want to take a moment to thank Shari Powers for her distinguished service on the Board over the past ten years, six of which she served as Chairwoman.

During her tenure, Shari served on our Executive, Development, Trusteeship, and Finance and Facilities Committees. She played a role in the school’s 50th Anniversary Capital Campaign and yearlong celebration. For three years, she chaired the committee on Trusteeship, and she served as Vice-Chair of the Board for one year. Upon becoming Chairwoman of the Board in 2014, she led the effort to develop a new five-year Strategic Plan for Collegiate, which provided improved benefits and professional development for employees and an increased focus on STEM through two new Innovation Labs, strengthened the foreign language program, and improved marketing and communications. Most importantly, Shari helped conduct a search to replace longtime Headmaster Tom Davis, resulting in the appointment of Head of School Nathan Washer. Her extraordinary leadership has set the bar high and I feel fortunate that, although she will no longer serve on the Board, she will still be on campus with her daughter Elise, a rising 8th Grade student. Shari, thank you!

I also want to welcome John Rolfe back to the Board of Trustees!

John previously served on the Board from 2007 to 2012 before moving to Houston, Texas. While in Houston, John served on the board at Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart (DASH), where both daughters, Evan and Erin, attended. Evan graduated from DASH in 2018 and now attends Loyola University in New Orleans. Erin is a rising freshman at WCS. John is currently the Chief Development and Partnership Officer at the Kansas Leadership Center (KLC), which focuses on fostering leadership development and transformation across Kansas and beyond for stronger, healthier, and more prosperous Kansas communities.

Before joining KLC, John served as Chief Operating Officer for Houston First Corporation, Houston, TX, and was the CEO and President of Go Wichita Convention & Visitors Bureau. He also served as Deputy Secretary of the Kansas Department of Commerce as well as in other economic development and marketing roles.

John is a graduate of Wichita State University and holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration. He continues to be involved in various boards and civic organizations that focus on education, youth, travel and tourism, the arts, and leadership. John is married to Felicia, an Anchor/Reporter at KWCH 12. He enjoys sports, working out, traveling, dining out, and spending time with his family. Welcome back, John!

Lastly, we are treading new ground as we head into this school year, and I want to strongly encourage you to take on the personal responsibility to help WCS open safely and stay open by following all the safety recommendations communicated to you from WCS. By your personal care, you would help minimize the risk and provide a safe and healthy environment for our students and staff so that we can remain open.

I am very much looking forward to continuing Collegiate’s commitment to educational and cultural excellence alongside Mr. Washer. Lastly, I want to thank the WCS community for your trust and continued support of WCS. May we all have a wonderful 2020-21 school year.

DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION AT WCS HOW WICHITA COLLEGIATE SCHOOL IS REFLECTING ON ITS PAST AND WORKING TOWARD A BETTER FUTURE The year 1963 is significant, in both our local and national histories.

In 1963, Wichita Collegiate School was founded out of a desire of five families to provide a better education for their children. In late August of 1963, the March on Washington took place, spurred by a desire of innumerable people to create a better future for themselves and their children.

In the nearly six decades since then, much has changed, but much has stayed the same.

Now, in 2020, our school, community, nation, and world are experiencing a reckoning with that which has stayed the same.

While the premise of righting our world seems incredibly daunting, we at Wichita Collegiate School are committed to improving our school and local community in many ways, but especially in terms of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Head of School Nathan Washer is engaging trustees, faculty and staff, current parents, alumni, and other community members in conversation to understand our history and to create a better future. He has assembled a small task force to develop a defined school statement on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity; to audit representation of ethnicity in our student body and administration; to create professional development plans on DEI issues; and identify resources to help us review curricula that reflects a diverse range of experiences, among other things.

Washer also hosted an alumni forum and heard from more than 30 alumni about their experiences at WCS. One alumnus in particular who attended and spoke within the forum is Regis Fox, Class of 2004.

A lifer, he began his WCS career as a three- or four-year-old child and stayed all the way through to graduation. But growing up near 13th and Hydraulic in the McAdams neighborhood, Regis says he lived within “two very dynamic and different cultures. My mom nicknamed me, ‘chameleon.’ My being in two different atmospheres really let me learn at an early age how to develop and change how I walk,

major protests that broke out in response, Shah created a Change.org petition calling on WCS to implement curricula changes addressing diversity, inclusion, and systemic racism.

More than 1,000 alumni signed the petition in less than 24 hours.

“WCS has always stood for excellence,” Shah said, and feels everyone can achieve excellence if they are heard and respected for their individual experiences. This can only happen in a community that embraces and celebrates its differences. “We, as proud alumni, are here to collaborate and help in this important work.

That’s a tough thing to say, especially when you’re a young kid, but I learned how to play those roles very well.”

Another alumnus who spoke up in the forum is Amar Shah, Class of 2002. After the murder of George Floyd and the

other alumni, Shah has heard themes consistent with Fox’s experience – students leading parallel lives. So he posed this question – “How do we as an institution build leaders that bridge those gaps?”

Fox and Shah both shared that the answers to that question lie in thoughtfully listening to the experiences of the full spectrum of WCS constituents,

participating in some serious selfreflection, then taking action at a systemic level. “Maybe the first step would be actually admitting the awareness, saying, ‘Hey, this is an issue that we’ve had since our conception in 1963. This is something we’re seriously gonna take a look at,’” Fox said. Such a “holistic approach is always the right one,” Shah said.

Kathy Rukes ’99, current parent to three boys, new Director of Enrollment Management (formerly Admission), and member of the DEI Task Force, says it all begins with our faculty and staff. “We have to all be speaking the same language, coming from the same place. We have a tolerant community, but we aren’t quite to the point where we’re embracing and celebrating differences. So it starts with helping our faculty and staff embrace all those differences.”

Rukes says another step is then recruiting teachers who look like the students we aim to teach. “We are a more diverse community than people realize, but our faculty and staff is not as diverse. I would imagine when you visit a campus and don’t see any teachers who look like you, that’s a barrier.”

When representation is there, it has a positive impact. Fox echoed that sentiment. “The only black teacher I had, being a lifer, was Jan Davis. She was influential on so many levels. It was so refreshing for me as a 7th and 8th grade student to say, ‘Hey, there’s someone who looks

like me running something.’ I’d never seen that before,” Fox said.

While there is still work to be done, Hanale Vincent brings new perspective as our incoming Head of Middle School. “Being a person of color myself, growing up in a very diverse world in Hawaii, I know the value that honoring and celebrating diversity and differences can bring to kids,” Vincent said.

When asked how we will get to a place of better honoring and celebrating diversity as a school and staff, he remarked that, “it’s important to realize what we ask children to do. We ask children to learn and try new things, to be vulnerable and to fail and to learn from failures. If we want kids to do things that are uncomfortable, that they’re not good at, we need to want the same for ourselves. And the commitment has to be authentic and continual.

When asked why now it’s more important than ever to do the work and get this right, Kathy Rukes shared why she chooses Collegiate for her own children – “Because I want my kids to see every belief, meet people of every political persuasion, ethnicity, and religion. I want them to be ready to be leaders in their communities. They need to see what the world really looks like, which allows them to be reflective and then take ownership of their own experiences.

“This is a school whose students go on to be leaders. If we have that role to play, we should be doing everything we can to make sure we’re educating them to be the best leaders possible.”

As we head into a new school year, WCS wants you to know where we stand and where we are headed. We are listening. We are self-reflecting. And we are ready to take action, to do the work necessary to effect change, for ourselves and our students.

NewcomersWELCOME How Collegiate Upper School students are engaging Wichita newcomers - reframing the conversation around refugees through the Newcomer Club, and the program to further empower Spartans to serve their community

When one walks down the halls of the Upper School, they see classrooms buzzing with tense curiosity about math, science, language, and the arts. But part of what makes Collegiate special is the complete experience. An opportunity to shine academically, athletically, and in the fine arts. And perhaps more importantly, an opportunity to see the world through the eyes, hearts, and minds of our neighbors-- an experience connected to our Institute for Social Impact, which is launching this fall.

But imagine for now that it is 2017. Caitlin Mattar is a freshman at Wichita Collegiate School. Like many, she is looking for a place to be engaged. She knows she wants to be of service to her community, but what she doesn’t know just yet is that this expectation of service could be equally impactful to her. A conversation with a caring mentor, JoyAnn Brake, WCS Community Service Coordinator, altered the trajectory of Mattar’s Collegiate experience.

The path she followed directly influenced her ideas about the world around us. The IRC, or International Rescue Committee, had presented an opportunity for partnering with Collegiate and, for Mattar, this was just the beginning.

“We reached out, and we started with Newcomer Field Day,” Mattar, now a Senior at WCS, said.

“We got together and newcomers – which is [the correct] way of saying refugees – got together and we had fun, played basketball, went on scooters, and enjoyed activities.”

The beginnings of a student program The process was simple – newcomers were invited to the WCS campus for snacks and activities and paired with Collegiate students who could help make the transition to life in Wichita easier. These students could provide a consistent and caring face, offer empathy, see commonalities, and celebrate differences.

The first year was so successful that it led Mattar to create a student club for the Upper School devoted specifically to forming relationships with IRC students – the Newcomer Club – during her sophomore year. The partnership between Collegiate and IRC has allowed for many newcomer students to form friendships with Spartans.

“We help them with their high school knowledge,” Mattar said.

The Newcomer Club also provides tutoring experiences for students who simply need a peer with a heart for service, and the passion for academics, to thrive.

“Our high school students work with them,” Mattar said. “I’m really thankful for our high school students being able to help.”

Increased commitments lead to student growth in shared empathy Getting this program off the ground was no small commitment. In 2017-2018, Mattar and fellow Newcomer Club students spent more than two hours a week getting field days up and running. The following year, Mattar invested more than five hours a week as tutoring became a need our students detected and responded to. The Newcomer Club now has a board that meets regularly to discuss the program.

“I care because, when I saw the Newcomer students for the first time with our Collegiate students, my heart was really happy,” Mattar said. “Our Collegiate students stay in contact with the newcomers. Seeing us make an impact even in the smallest way – it makes me really happy.”

By the Spring of 2020, the Newcomer Club had multiple students spending more than eight hours a week tutoring and building relationships with newcomers in East Wichita. Our students were eager to make a difference through shared experiences. It was clear that this partnership was

just as important to developing Collegiate students’ character, empathy, and communication skills, as it was to helping newcomers adapt to their new way of life.

Planning an Institute for Social Impact The Newcomer Club is an example of one particular way that Wichita Collegiate students are engaged in making a difference in social programming.

“I believe it is totally worth it,” Mattar said. “It takes a lot of communication, and I’ve learned that a lot in Newcomer Club.”

JoyAnn Brake, who helps facilitate the Newcomer Club, is also the Director of the Institute for Social Impact, which will connect classroom experiences with community businesses, nonprofits, and organizations to engage students beyond our classrooms and develop the complete child.

This impact was felt even during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“After Wichita Public Schools physically closed, they distributed learning packets to Newcomer students.

It was obvious that the majority of our students didn’t have the support to do their assignments because of their language barriers and digital divide,” Nayu Wilson, Program Coordinator for the International Rescue Committee, said. “Once IRC Wichita decided to resume an after school program as a virtual tutoring program, Collegiate students were ready to join and help these students.”

This ability to adapt and react to change is exactly what the Institute for Social Impact at Wichita Collegiate is striving for with each of our Spartans.

What is next for the Newcomer Club and Mattar To make sure the club continues after this year, Mattar and the board of the Newcomer Club have selected freshmen, sophomores, and juniors to mentor.

For Mattar, the Newcomer Club has been a staple of her Collegiate experience. It has also sparked an unexpected passion as she enters her senior year and begins to consider what life looks like after commencement.

“We have the opportunity to impact needs in our community. Through carefully designed real-world projects and experiences, it will allow for more depth in the Collegiate experience,” Brake said.

“This is more than just about our kids.”

The Institute for Social Impact is focusing on projects that achieve outcomes in five unique areas: empathy, advocacy, real-world experiences, creative problem solving, and exploring purpose.

“We have the opportunity to impact needs in our community. Through carefully designed real-world projects and experiences, it will allow for more depth in the Collegiate experience.

This is more than just about our kids.”

“I practically have had this my whole high school career. It has made me a better person – it has made me extremely grateful for what I have and made me understand how much I can do.

It’s great for the future. Without it, I would not have grown as much,” Mattar said.

“I started this program and my mindset changed completely – social work, helping. Right now, I’m planning on doing something like that so that I can [work with others] directly.”

Mattar wants to be an active advocate for change for Newcomers. If her passion, poise, and active participation are any indicators, she is certainly proving herself prepared to do that heavy lifting because she is listening to the needs of the community.

This requires an understanding of the issues in our community, our state, and our world. It also requires an understanding that a desire to help must be accompanied by a desire to listen and react to the unique needs of a community. For Newcomers, this need was expressed through the IRC to be a social and academic need. Our students responded well, and for the Institute for Social Impact, Mattar’s story provides a scenario that highlights the importance of empathy for each Collegiate student – something explored at school and modeled within the home by positive parents.

“More than just academics and accolades, Collegiate strives to develop great people and citizens of the world. Parents want this as well. We partner with parents in character development, a commitment to community, and a worldview that offers perspective beyond our limited experiences,” Brake said. “Through the Institute for Social Impact, we aim to offer experiences that help connect curriculum deeper through achieved empathy, advocacy, real-world experiences, creative problem solving and exploring purpose.”

It is clear that Caitlin Mattar, who began her Upper School journey in 2017, has modeled just that over a few short years. True growth and empathy, but also empowerment of Newcomers to thrive. That’s something each Spartan can strive to model.

The Institute for Social Impact is part of the strategic plan for WCS and will be featured in the next edition of the Connection Magazine.

DISTANCE LEARNING HOW SPARTANS THRIVED, EVEN WHILE APART, THIS PAST SPRING “Distance learning” is a phrase new to all of us since COVID-19 hit. Who could’ve envisioned at the start of Spring Break that we’d wrap up the 2019-20 school year virtually, from the comfort (or discomfort) of our own homes?

Head of School Nathan Washer sent his first distance-learning announcement as school was letting out for break. Kristi Hall, mom to a preschoolage daughter at WCS, said her initial thought “was one of fear. My husband and I both work full time and I didn’t know what we were going to do to help our children not fall behind in coursework.”

Kerri Weeks, mom to three Spartans and a physician in town, says she had a positive and adventurous outlook from the first distance learning announcement. “My first thought was, honestly, ‘This is going to be interesting!’ My employer was flexible and allowed me to work from home quite a bit,” Weeks said, making it easier to manage a new normal.

By the end of Spring Break, with a great deal of individual, team, and division planning, WCS teachers were ready to try out distance learning. In spite of a steep learning curve and some bumps in the road, “WCS rose to the challenge,” Hall said. “I really do feel like my daughter was able to continue learning and to work on assignments that she would have done in person. Her teacher, Mrs. Gallagher, had each lesson available the night before, so I was able to figure out in advance how the schoolwork would fit into our day. The teachers were always there to answer questions and I was impressed with the quick responses.”

“I was blown away at how fast WCS had a plan and moved on it,” Weeks said. “While it seemed like other students in the area were waiting for direction, my kids never missed a beat. Literally. I felt SO fortunate to be part of the WCS community!

My kids thrived under the virtual learning plan – they loved it! My boys were organized and disciplined, and held themselves accountable. For my youngest (in PreK), I had no idea how far along she was in many areas!”

For both Hall and Weeks, distance learning also highlighted the importance of their children’s educators. “Distance learning allowed me to have a deeper respect for what teachers do each day for our children,” Hall said.

“The experience really put me to the test and made me realize (even more) how much I appreciate our teachers,” Weeks said.

While parents and teachers alike are excited to get back to in-person classes sooner rather than later, there is a silver lining that we hope remains part of routine long after distance learning stops.

While parents were grappling with COVID-19 restrictions, WCS teachers were doing the same.

“Most teachers teach because they love students, and the idea of distance learning took away that personal connection,” Lower School Science Teacher Jena Simms said. Even though they couldn’t reach kids face-to-face, teachers still wanted their students to tune in, get engaged, and stay on track with coursework. “The most important question

“Those first weeks were honestly so wonderful,” Weeks said. “We had a lot of family meals, played games, and rode bikes. With my youngest, I was able to spend so much time crafting, reading, projecting, and just talking with her.”

ALUMNI BOARD

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT // MATT MALONEY ’94

As I sit at my kitchen table writing this column, I am reminded of how much has changed since I wrote a similar piece several months ago. That column listed numerous events that the Alumni Board was involved with in the fall semester, nearly all of which involved face-to-face interaction. As I wrote about the annual golf tournament, class reunions, homecoming, and mailing care packages to the Class of 2019, I would never have imagined that such personal interactions would all but disappear for much of the spring semester.

Fortunately, COVID-19 had yet to cause havoc on our daily lives in mid-February, which meant that the 30th Annual Mentor Program proceeded without a hitch. Amy Johnson, Class of ’07 and Alumni Board member, kicked off the program by addressing an Upper School assembly on February 19. The following day, Sumit Shah ’00 delivered the keynote address at the annual breakfast for seniors and their mentors. Amy and Sumit both did a tremendous job, and you can read more about their speeches on page 26.

Two out-of-town alumni gatherings also managed to proceed in pre-quarantine days. In January, several alumni got together in Atlanta, and a large group of New York City alumni met the following month. We love seeing our alumni from across the country (and around the world) stay connected to the school, and I encourage you to contact Lisa Schooler if you are interested in arranging an event in your city.

While we were unable to meet in person for much of the spring semester, the Board did manage to make history in April with our first Zoom meeting.

While it wasn’t quite the same as being in the same room as one another, it was the next best thing, and also provided plenty of smiles when we got to see a few children and dogs on our screens!

The year concluded with one final meeting in June, during which I had the privilege of presenting the 24

We also presented a check to Mr. Washer for $168,472.07 – a great number given the difficult circumstances of the final three months of the school year. Thank you to all alumni who donated! The meeting concluded with Mr. Washer updating the Board on the steps that the school has taken, and will continue to take, to ensure greater diversity and inclusion both inside and outside the classroom. We appreciate and value the input so many alumni have offered on racial equality and related issues, and encourage you to reach out to the Board with any questions, concerns, or suggestions. We realize that the school can, and must, be better in these areas, and I am confident that the school’s leadership will take the necessary steps to effect change. Please know that the voices of our alumni matter.

It has been an honor serving as the Alumni Board president. My fellow board members, and, of course, Lisa Schooler, made it a simple role to fill. When the Board meets again in the fall, we will be in the capable hands of Doug Coe ’04. Doug, it’s up to you to prevent a pandemic on your watch!

The Randy Storms Alumni Service Award is given annually to an alumus/a of Wichita Collegiate who emerges as one with a strong commitment of service to the school. This individual distinguishes him-/herself through effort and responsibilities exceeding those of his or her normal course of duty.

Fostered by a deep love and thoughtful vision for their Alma Mater, these recipients all share in the true spirit of the school motto, “Proba Te Dignum” (Prove Yourself Worthy).

The WCS Alumni Board is honored to present this award to Christina Hourani Shuart ’99.

Christina was a lifer at WCS and was involved in Madrigals, musicals, and the dance and cross country teams during her time on campus. “Some of my favorite memories are our Madrigals trips to NYC and Europe,” Christina said. She credits her teachers for instilling in her a love of reading and the courage to try new things. The adults and peers she met gave her a sense of community that was life changing and unique, and she feels lucky that her children get to experience this kind of thoughtful community. Now, as a volunteer and Trustee, she sees the amount and of time and effort our teachers, administrators, and staff put into making Collegiate a fabulous experience for every single student. Her love for the school continues to grow each year.

After Collegiate Christina attended KU and majored in Journalism. After working for a few years, she decided to move to Chicago to pursue a Master’s degree in Applied Behavior Analysis at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology. During graduate school she worked at various schools for children with Autism in the Chicago area. She also completed a year of a doctoral program in behavior analysis before deciding to move back to Wichita with her husband Blake, where she worked with parents and teachers of children with special needs at Heartspring.

MENTOR DAY

This year marked our 31st Mentor Day Program, an impactful tradition at WCS! Seniors heard from alumni over the course of two days about their WCS, college, and professional experiences, and then shadowed a mentor from the WCS or Wichita community in their desired fields of study.

Amy Johnson ’07 was this year’s assembly speaker.

Amy is a Community Affairs Manager for Koch Companies Public Sector, LLC, where she manages philanthropy and community programs for Koch Industries and its subsidiaries. Amy was a “lifer” at WCS and is a proud Oklahoma State University alumna, where she graduated with a degree in Industrial Engineering and Management in 2011.

Amy shared the following with the Upper School students:

Assistant Professor of Medicine and Oncology at Stanford University and specializes in the management of advanced urologic malignancies, such as prostate, kidney, bladder, and testicular cancers. He serves as an investigator on numerous cancer clinical trials, with a focus on novel immunotherapy agents. His academic interests include digital health technologies, global health, and teaching medical trainees. Dr. Shah graduated with distinction in biomedical engineering from Duke University, received his medical doctorate from Stanford University, and Masters in Public Health from Harvard University. He completed his internal medicine residency at the University of California, San Francisco and returned to Stanford for his fellowship training in medical oncology, where he now serves on the faculty. He is married to his medical school sweetheart, Dr. Meera Shah, and they have three beautiful boys.

1970 Michael Meacham Michael will be officially retired from the Medical University of South Carolina effective June 30, 2020. He served as Associate Professor for Health Leadership and Management for the last 10 years. For the preceding 7 years, he was in a similar position at The Pennsylvania State University.

Michael is in the process of completing the fourth book he has authored, co-authored, or edited - the 7th edition of Longest’s Health Policymaking in the United States - which will come out in October or November. He expects to stay active with adjunct teaching and consulting after retirement and is looking forward to the Class of 1970’s postponed 50th reunion next year.

2002 Curt Romig Curt, as of mid-June, survived 90 days being stuck in his Abu Dhabi apartment with his wife and three kids (ages 8, 6, and 2). They all still love and mostly like each other. Curt successfully watched all of The Office (again), read Lord of the Rings, and only gained 5 pounds.

1977 Carol Owen Beckner Carol moved back to Wichita from Austin, TX, 18 years ago and has been working at Intrust Bank.

She is married to a wonderful man and has a son, daughter-in-law, and three beautiful grandsons who all unfortunately live out-ofstate. “No new births or jobs, but there is something to be said for continuity,” she says.

Candice Farha Candice joined a new law firm, Penner Lowe Law Group, LLC, in March 2020. They are a full-service law firm specializing in Family Law and Criminal Law matters.

2001 Devin Sikes In April 2020, Devin was appointed by the U.S. Trade Representative to the U.S. roster of panelists who may serve as judges to resolve disputes arising under Chapter 19 of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Those disputes concern issues arising from imports that have been unfairly sold in the United States.

Devin continues to work as counsel for Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP, an international law firm.

Marsin Alshamary Marsin just defended her dissertation in the political science department at MIT and now has her PhD! She is moving to Washington DC in the fall to put her degree to good use, working broadly in issues concerning US Foreign Policy in the Middle East.

Tyler Dobbs Tyler Anthony Dobbs married Isabel Annette Nelson on July 20, 2019, at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul in Philadelphia. Tyler’s siblings, Gabrielle Dobbs (’18) and Michael Dobbs (’26), were members of the bridal party, as was Andrew Elkouri (’12). Guests included Edgar Corrigan (’12), Jonathan Dennill (’12), Drew Naron (’12), and Joey O’Hara (’12). Tyler is a 2016 graduate of Harvard College, and holds a master’s degree from the University of Oxford. He recently completed his first year of studies at Harvard Law School. Isabel is a 2017 graduate of Villanova University, from which she also holds a master’s degree.

Abby Boyd Abby and Hunter Morris ‘12 got married on May 30, 2020.

They originally planned a destination wedding for July 4, but moved up their nuptials due to COVID-19. Parker Tatro ‘11 was their photographer.

2017 Kevin Edwards Kevin just finished his junior year at Stanford. He has worked for three years as a production assistant for Stanford Athletics and worked this past year filming NFL games as a Live Content Correspondent (LCC) for the San Francisco 49ers. Although he was assigned to cover only home games for the 49ers, the NFL asked him to cover regular season games for other teams as well, and the Seattle Seahawks asked him to cover their playoff games. At the end of the season, the NFL asked him to cover the Pro Bowl and Super Bowl - the activities in the weeks prior as well as the games themselves.
