FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

Dear Wichita Collegiate School Family, Welcome to our Summer 2021 Connection Magazine. In the following pages, you will have the opportunity to read about our amazing 2020-21 school year, as well as learn about some exciting ways we are moving the school forward in the coming years. As a community we rose to the challenge of a global pandemic, and through a lot of hard work by a tremendous team, we have been able to provide our students with as close to a normal year as possible by remaining in person and open all year. Many of the pages you will read in this magazine are devoted to our new set of Strategic Initiatives. These plans will help us strengthen our school in a multitude of ways and ensure that we deliver on our vision of inspiring students to lead lives of impact.

Throughout the past year, the strength and resilience of the Collegiate community has inspired all of us. On the pages that follow are but a few examples of all that is unfolding on our campus as we fulfill our mission and in doing so prepare our students in a way that is unparalleled in our region. Looking to next year, our long legacy of academic excellence will be further enhanced by new additional support for learning. We will implement a new program developed to positively impact the health and wellbeing of all in our care. We will find new ways to provide outreach and service to our community, and we will look for new ways to “tell our story” effectively to the community at large. Finally, we will also investigate how we can improve and update our campus facilities to ensure that we are most effectively supporting our students It’s an exciting time for Collegiate and one that we will all enjoy together. When we decided on the theme of “Spartans Thrive Together” for this year, we did not know how true that statement would become. It has been an extraordinary year, and thank you to everyone who helped the community make it so for our students. Sincerely,

HEAD OF SCHOOL AWARDS are presented to the 8th grade boy and girl who best exemplify the overall objectives of Collegiate Middle School. These students participate in many areas of student life such as academics, fine arts, and athletics with a sense of joy and commitment.

HEAD OF SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP CUP is presented to the class with the highest grade average. This year’s cup was presented to Alegra Fazio who had the highest average in the 6th grade class (pictured on page 3).

FROM THE BOARD Dear Wichita Collegiate Community, It’s an honor to write to you as Chairman of the Board of Trustees as we celebrate our 2020-21 school year in review and look ahead in the following pages to the next five years and beyond. Thank you to our entire community for such a successful and stellar year. We truly thrived as a school, and we proved that we thrive best together. It is a privilege for me to be associated with the best private school in Kansas and its world class administration and staff. I am proud of the role the Board of Trustees played in guiding and supporting our school, especially during this past year. Keeping WCS safely open for the full school year while most schools in the nation were closed was a challenge, and our board, administration, staff and students took personal responsibility and were up for the task.

Through hard work and tenacity, the administration and staff showed their passion for our students by striving to provide an almost normal atmosphere throughout the year. Looking forward to the future, I am pleased with the work done by the Board of Trustees to develop, direct and monitor the 2021-2026 strategic plan. I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank every member of the Board of Trustees for their strong commitment and diligent work throughout the year on behalf of our school. They each bring a unique skill set to our board, and their collective group efforts will ensure the strategic and financial sustainability and continued success of Wichita Collegiate School. Each year brings an opportunity to celebrate members rolling off the Board and to welcome new members, and this year is no exception. This year’s departing member, Kathie Dakhil, has been integral to many of the Board’s functions for the last nine years, specifically as the Development Committee Chair for the past three years. Kathie has tirelessly supported the work of development staff and helped to set and then break records for dollars and donors raised. In her three years as Development Chair, she assisted in raising nearly $1.5M for our school for the Collegiate Annual Fund Effort. This year, she donated to and volunteered for our inaugural Spartan Bash and played a key role in raising more than $187,000. In addition, she and husband Dr. Shaker have left an indelible mark on our school and impacted its littlest learners through the beautiful Dakhil Family Early Childhood Building. Kathie’s gifts of time, talent, and treasure are unparalleled. Her greatest joys, though, are her children and grandchildren: Deanna (Tyler) Ternes ’96, Chris (Charese) Dakhil ’98, Laura (Bradley) Monahan ’00, and Dan (Kristen) Dakhil ’02; Hannah ’25, Madeline ’26, Clara ’27, Ava ’29, Emma ’29, Lila ’31, Benjamin ’32, Henry ’32, Milo ’32, Ellie ’34, Simon ’34, Vivian ’34, Reese ’36, and Madison. I am pleased to announce three new Trustee appointments. Kate Taylor will return to the Board after a 13-year hiatus, and Morgan Wilson Overman ’96 and Deanna Ternes ’96 will be new to the Board in the 2021-22 school year. Kate Taylor has been committed to WCS since her daughter Bailey’s first day of class in 1995. Bailey graduated with the Class of 2009, but Kate’s grandchildren, Ryan ’30 and Samuel ’26, have helped keep her connected to the school. Kate previously served as a Trustee from 1999 to 2008, sitting on the Finance and Facilities Committee as well as the Development and Executive Committees and establishing the Taylor Faculty Development Fund in 1997 with husband Dan to supplement professional development. Kate has also been active on the boards of Exploration Place and the Kansas Humane Society. Morgan Wilson Overman ’96 is a “lifer” of Wichita Collegiate School and married to fellow Class of 1996 member Logan. Morgan and Logan have two children, who are current students of WCS - Langley, a rising freshman, and Torsten, a rising 6th grader. Morgan has been active on the WCS Alumni Board since 2011 and has served as both President and Vice-President. She has been a key contributor to the success of various Mentor Day programs and served on the 50th Anniversary Committee. Morgan is also active in the Wichita community, serving on boards of Giving the Basics, Mark Arts, and Wichita Country Club. She is a realtor with Reece Nichols and loves the challenge and energy of the real estate market. Morgan is excited to bring her knowledge of the WCS community to the Board from both the alumni and parent perspectives. Deanna Ternes ’96 is excited to have the opportunity to give back to the school that has given her and her family so much joy. A proud alumna of Collegiate, she and husband Tyler have their four children enrolled here in 9th, 8th, 5th, and 2nd grades. When she is not at a WCS athletic or fine arts event, Deanna serves as the associate chief of the Via Christi hospitalist group, taking care of hospitalized patients while they are ill. Deanna is proud to have earned her undergraduate degree from The University of Kansas, and her medical degree from The University of Health Sciences in Kansas City. She completed her internal medicine residency here in Wichita with KU.

OUR STRATEGIC INITIATIVES

2021-2026

The year 2020, with all of its challenges, also brought about the need for Wichita Collegiate School to create a Strategic Plan to guide us in the next five years. Nathan Washer’s transition to Head of School in 2019-20 served as the perfect opportunity to learn from our stakeholders about where we should be headed as a school. “I received a great deal of feedback from parents, faculty and staff, alumni, and grandparents, which coupled well with formal surveys to our community to create the bare bones of what we as a school would focus on moving forward,” Washer said. While we had feedback to learn from, we needed a team dedicated to bringing that commentary to life through a formalized plan. The Board of Trustees served as a natural pool of leadership to do just that, so a subcommittee was formed and led by Christina Shuart ’99. “Our goal was easy to define from our mission statement: to inspire students to be the best versions of themselves.

From the beginning, we aimed to create a plan that is student focused and promotes academic excellence; that would help us make sure each student has the tools to become the best version of him- or herself,” Shuart said. “When you break this down, though, to students ranging in ages from 2 to 18 with so many different interests and individual strengths, achieving that goal becomes more 28

complicated. We looked at past WCS strategic plans, feedback from surveys and specific teams of staff members, and trends and research in education to formulate the plan.” The Strategic Plan Committee then laid the plan out to the greater Board before delving deeper into the nuts and bolts. As Chair of the Board, Basil Hourani was integral to gaining consensus across the board and ensuring the plan truly aligned with everyone’s hopes for the future. “It became clear that the most important piece for everyone was a focus on academic excellence and on financial sustainability, particularly on building our endowment,” Hourani said. “In addition, we wanted to achieve an education of the whole person for our students, and one that is customized to each student. Not all kids learn the same way, or have the same objectives.” The final result is something of which we as a staff and board are very proud. “I’m thrilled about having put together a clear message of who we are and what we as a school are here to accomplish,” Shuart said. Each of the goals in the plan has a multitude of corresponding tactics that are clearly articulated and measurable to best assess progress across divisions and departments “This plan sets Collegiate apart from other institutions. Our focus on whole-student education; on increasing our efforts around diversity, equity, and inclusion; on recognizing individual learning styles and meeting students where they are with their unique capabilities - our plan dictates the importance of those initiatives and I’m excited to see us execute it in the next five years and beyond,” Hourani said. We appreciate your willingness to engage with us in this process and pledge to work diligently to uphold this plan for continued excellence at Wichita Collegiate School.

New Faculty & Staff Positions The Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Innovation will implement the strategic initiatives outlined in the Collegiate strategic plan, with a particular focus on continuous improvements in teaching and learning methods, creative and innovative classrooms, curriculum alignment, effective use of new and emerging technologies, and an atmosphere of constant growth and professional development for faculty. We are thrilled to welcome Amber Celestin as she takes on this new position. With seventeen years of experience in education, Amber began her career as an elementary teacher, then spent the past ten years working in higher education as the Director of Student Success and Retention at Bethel College. To further support our students, we have hired three Learning Specialists, who will also serve as student advocates and liaisons by being in contact with parents, teachers, and support staff on a regular basis. They will make recommendations for effective strategies to be used by teachers as well as recommend outside services to parents when appropriate. In addition to being responsible for the management of screenings and formal testing for all students, the Learning Specialists will coordinate and initiate all necessary paperwork for students seeking accommodations for standardized testing. The Learning Specialists will also strive to ensure that student transitions are smooth between grade levels and the four interdisciplinary levels of the school.

Our new STEAM Coordinator, Joe Gehrer ’02, will help teachers integrate all elements of S(science), T(technology), E(engineering), A(arts), and M(math) into their current curriculum, as well as teach various courses in the Lammers Innovation Lab that will introduce students to computer science, fabrication, digital literacy, video production, electronics, robotics, and design theories. By working with Early Childhood and Lower School teachers to find ways to get students excited about STEAM Mr. Gehrer will be the bridge, helping our youngest learners on campus be ready for the advanced courses offered in the Upper School Innovation Lab.

Dear Collegiate Community,

• The faculty, staff, and advisors designed and united around a first-rate plan to keep our students in school and safe all year long. I haven’t seen another organization, big or small, navigate the pandemic as well as WCS did. Our leadership team proved itself worthy. • Parents and grandparents sacrificed, gave, and served more than ever before – even when opinions differed. They proved themselves worthy. • Over one thousand alumni raised their united voices on behalf of current and future students, and many are now working to further elevate the quality and effectiveness of our diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. On top of that, alumni giving was at an all-time high this year. They proved themselves worthy. Though we do not all see eye to eye on every issue, we are united. Blake Webster ’98

Blake Webster, Class of 1998, is a self-proclaimed lucky man, splitting time between his home state and the sunshine state where he directs and produces Carpool Karaoke. Just this last year, Blake snagged an Emmy for Best Outstanding Short Form Variety Series for Carpool, and got to do so from the comfort of home in Independence, KS, with his wife Laurel and their three children. Blake and his family had been living in Los Angeles since 2003, but decided in 2017 to relocate to Independence to be closer to family. “Some of my colleagues probably thought I was insane. After the pandemic hit, maybe it wasn’t so crazy,” Blake shared. They still have an apartment in LA, where Blake stays when he heads back out to California for work. Blake appreciates his roots in Kansas and gives credit to Collegiate for inspiring him in his professional endeavors. “If it weren’t for Gary Buettgenbach and WCS, I never would have ended up

where I did. I cannot tell you how much I believe that. When I was at Collegiate, I was lucky to be in Gary’s class when a brand-new Avid video editing system arrived, and a group of us THRIVED with that new technology and started the Video Magazine tradition that would lead me to a life of film and comedy.” “I remember ALL the teachers playing along, putting on a wig for a sketch or allowing me to stay and edit until 2:00 a.m. if needed. I’ll NEVER forget the thrill of the entire Upper School filing into the auditorium to watch what a small group of us had worked so hard on - it was like getting my own movie premiere! To this day, I still go back and look at those video mags. When I won the Emmy this last year, one of my very first thoughts was, ‘Thank you, Gary B!’ I’m a lucky man!” We feel lucky to have Blake as a member of our Wichita Collegiate community. Sixty-nine of the 75 mentors are alumni themselves. “Going virtual opened up so many doors and connections to occupations that don’t exist in Wichita,” Schooler said.

Mentor Day Embrace rituals and traditions in times of transition!

Marsin Alshamary, WCS Class of 2009, shared incredibly apt advice for the Class of 2021 at this year’s Mentor Day Breakfast. Mentor Day poses an opportunity each February for WCS seniors to connect with professionals in the Wichita workforce in their desired fields of study. It’s a perfect glimpse into a potential degree or career path ahead of college and a great networking opportunity. While COVID-19 made a typical breakfast unmanageable, WCS couldn’t let this three-decades-long tradition slip by for the Class of 2021 as students move closer to one of their first big life transitions. Marsin Alshamary ‘09 served as the keynote speaker and, herself, Zoomed all the way from Baghdad, Iraq. Alshamary is currently a research fellow with the Brookings Institution working on American foreign policy in the Middle East. She shared her experiences and insights with wit and humor while senior students ate breakfast and listened in via Zoom. With those words still in mind, seniors left breakfast to meet with each of their mentors (mostly virtually).
