Westchester Black Women’s Political Caucus Honors The Vulcan Society & Past Presidents

YONKERS, NY -- The Yonkers Chapter of the Westchester Black Women’s Political Caucus (WBWPC) celebrated the day with a Summer Soiree at the Dunwoodie Golf Club in Yonkers on Sunday, August 23, 2026.

Caucus members from the Westchester Chapters (Peekskill, New Rochelle, Mount Vernon, Greenburgh/White Plains) gathered to help Yonkers celebrate their honorees, the Westchester Vulcans, and Past Presidents of the Countywide Caucus of WBWPC (“Rooted in Legacy, Rising in Power”).

The room was filled with powerful women who have guided the way for other women or who are now part of the political scene. Keynote speak-

ers for the event were NYS Attorney General Letitia James, a powerhouse in her own right, who is seeking re-election in November. Also, Adrienne Adams, former Speaker of the New York City Council, who is running for Lieutenant Governor, on the Democratic ticket with Governor Kathy Hochul. The women gave inspiring comments on the state of the nation under the present administration and stressed that we all must stand up for what is right and we must vote! This November is a crucial time for citizens to turn out and to vote in order to make the necessary changes to strengthen our

SUNY WCC Peekskill Center Opens Professional Green Screen Production Studio for Podcasts and Digital Media PEEKSKILL, N.Y. (August 19, 2026) – SUNY Westchester Community College is expanding opportunities for aspiring content creators, filmmakers, podcasters, and storytellers with the opening of a new professional green screen production studio at its Peekskill Center.

Located at 27 North Division Street, Peekskill, NY 10566, the new facility features a fully immersive green screen environment, with every wall, the floor, and the ceiling designed for chroma key production. Connected directly to the studio is a dedicated recording booth, allowing users to capture high-quality audio while producing professional video content. Together, the spaces provide an ideal environment for podcasting, film production, interviews, instructional videos, livestreams, and other multimedia projects.

The new studio is available not only to SUNY Westchester students, but may also be rented by community members, organizations, and businesses.

The cost to rent the studio is $50 per hour.

“This studio represents an exciting new resource for Peekskill and the greater Westchester community,” said Sherry Mayo, Director of the SUNY Westchester Peekskill Center. “Whether someone is launching a podcast, producing a short film, creating educational content, or developing digital media skills, this space offers access to professional production tools in a welcoming, community-centered environment. We’re especially excited that our students will be able to use the studio to gain hands-on experience with the technologies shaping today’s creative industries.”

The studio also enhances learning opportunities for students enrolled in SUNY Westchester’s Communications and Media Arts degree program, providing access to a professional production facility convenient for resi-

dents in northern Westchester County. SUNY WCC offers state-of-the-art facilities and equipment that complement classroom instruction and prepare graduates for careers in media, broadcasting, filmmaking, content creation, and digital communications.

ELOC Awarded $5,000 United Way Community Impact Grant to Support 2026 Summer SAT Prep Camp MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. — August 11, 2026 — Environmental Leaders of Color (ELOC), a Mount Vernon–based 501(c)(3) nonprofit, has been awarded a $5,000 Community Impact Grant from United Way of Westchester and Putnam to support its 2026 Summer SAT Prep Camp, a college-readiness program serving youth across Westchester County. Out of over 160 applicants, ELOC was selected in a competitive process for our demonstrated impact and alignment with community priorities.

The Summer SAT Prep Camp is a structured, expert-led online program delivered via Google Meet. The 16-session, 72-hour program launched on Saturday, July 18, 2026, and runs each Saturday and Sunday as students prepare for the September 12, 2026 SAT. Tuition was priced at $250. Students who enroll could earn back 50% of their tuition — up to $125 — by attending all sessions, completing all assignments, registering for and taking the September 12 SAT, and meeting all program requirements. However, with the generous support of United Way of Westchester and Putnam, ELOC was able to offer full $250

scholarships to our students.

Commercial SAT Prep programs typically cost $1,000–$3,000; by offering scholarships, ELOC ensures cost is never a barrier for our students. For the under-resourced and ALICE families ELOC serves — those who are employed but living paycheck to paycheck — this keeps expert, collegelevel test preparation within reach, so a student’s ZIP code or family income does not determine their access to college-readiness resources.

“Strong SAT scores open doors — to college admissions, to scholarships, and to greater financial opportunity,” said Diana Kaye Williams, Executive Director of ELOC. “This support from United Way of Westchester and Putnam helps us put high-quality, expert-led SAT preparation within reach of Westchester students who might not otherwise have access to it. Black America’s financially fragile retirees: Black wealth will be 4 times lower than whites by 2050

Across succeeding generations, nearly every worker has been urged to ‘save’ for retirement. However, yesteryear’s gold watch and pensions that came with health care benefits or even added stock options are today nearly extinct.

Instead, the emergence of varying 401(K) retirement plans has lifted many employer legacy costs by shifting the brunt of that financial responsibility to workers. Even worse, many low-wage workers have no employer-sponsored retirement plan.

For Black America, this shifting financial burden brings a new level of financial stress, worsened by the cumulative effects of lifelong wealth inequality.

The Reality of Racial Economic Inequality for Black Retirees, a recent policy brief from the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, analyzes the harsh cyclical realities affecting multiple generations. “[B]lack Americans are more likely to experience retirement as financially fragile, with less choice and less protection against illness, disability, or rising costs,” states the brief. “The cumulative effects of these inequalities have developed into a multi-generational cycle of low wealth for African Americans and ongoing racial wealth/ economic inequality.”

Black households have only about 61 percent of the median household income of whites. In 2025, median weekly earnings for full-time Black workers were $986,

compared with $1,231 for white workers. These income gaps leave less room to save, make it harder to absorb financial shocks, and reduce the likelihood that Black workers can build meaningful retirement balances, according to the Joint Center.

Citing a 2024 Federal Reserve report, the Joint Center notes that among workers, only 26 percent of Blacks said their retirement savings were on track, compared with 41 percent of whites. Additionally, 68 percent of white working adults had a tax-preferred retirement account, with 52 percent of Black workers having the same.

Further, Black workers ages 51 to 64 are the least likely among all racial and ethnic groups to hold retirement accounts. When they do, their median balance is well below that of similarly aged white adults at every income level.

Unless you have lived through it, it is easy to dismiss as racial paranoia the wariness and discomfort felt by many successful business leaders of color who have reached the elite ranks of the business world.

To outside observers, modern corporate America appears to be a meritocracy where performance dictates how far an individual can rise. Yet history reveals a far more sobering reality: No matter how much success an outsider of color accumulates, his or her place at the top is often accompanied by a question mark – by a lingering sense that acceptance is fleeting and the status earned over decades is more fragile than it appears.

Nowhere is that more evident than in moments of crisis and failure.

James, an immigrant entrepreneur of color who arrived in Ohio in the 1980s, chose a path modern Wall Street had largely abandoned. Rather than relocating operations and shipping jobs overseas, James entered the struggling world of Midwestern manufacturing and worked to turn it around. Over three decades, he acquired numerous iconic but fading American auto-parts brands — like FRAM, Trico, and Raybestos — bringing them under an industrial giant in a vitally important American industry.

As an industry outsider with limited access to easy credit from giant mainstream banks, James funded this expansion through high-yield, highrisk private lendersthat resemble the payday lenders found in urban neighborhoods. When the economy faltered — driven by historic interest rate hikes, inflation, and pandemic-era shipping bottlenecks — First Brands’ heavy debt burden became unsustainable.

In a fair system, staggering debt during an economic downturn triggers standard Chapter 11 protections: debt is reorganized, ancillary assets are sold, and the company continues to employ thousands. Instead, the private credit lenders who

democracy. While others are trying to take away the gains and to turn back the clock, the battle is to make sure the government lives up to the true meaning of the Constitution of the United States.

The New York State ticket will be a historic one as women are vying for the top positions in NYS government. As crucial issues will be decided after the election, all were encouraged to do as much as possible to get voters to the polls and to help educate others on the Power of the Vote!

Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins, Majority Leader of the New York State Senate and President Pro Tempore, was present to lend her support to the Caucus, as she thanked the women of

the Caucus who paved the way for her and served as mentors, including former Senator Ruth Hassell Thompson. She spoke of the many changes that have taken place since she arrived in Albany and how the scene has been transformed, with those now in office being a more diverse group that reflects the population of the State and the Nation. She also emphasized the importance of voting in the upcoming November election and the necessary shifting of power to address the issues of today and the future, including immigration, inflation, tariffs, education, housing, healthcare, child care and all issues which impact the way of life for New York State residents.

Countywide President Angela Davis-Farrish introduced each of the women who have helped make the Caucus what it is today, their legacy of shared wisdom throughout the years, and their willingness to help the Caucus grow, each woman a phenomenon in her own right. The Honorable Ruth Hassell Thompson was also acknowledged as a founding member of the Caucus and one who continues to inspire and mentor women working to become part of the political realm. Senator Thompson will be honored by the Countywide Westchester Black Women’s Political Caucus at the organization’s 50th Anniversary Golden Cel-

Vernon, who served as the first President, and Attorney Joan Mosley of Greenburgh, to increase the political influence, leadership and civic participation of Black women across Westchester County. The past Presidents are the late Alice Scott, Sandra Blackwell, Cheryl Brannon, the late Hon. Pearl Quarles, Sheila Morris, Barbara Shealy, Claudett Stothart, the late Geraldine King, Claudette King, Mary Cheek, Mae Williams, Amanda Haynes, Hon.

Jewel Williams Johnson, Ronnie Cox, Subomi Macauley, and Daniella Jackson.

Also honored at the Soiree was The Vulcan Society of Westchester County, Inc., a fraternal organization of Black firefighters in Westchester County, NY, who are dedicated to promoting brotherhood, community safety, bravery, and civil rights in firefighting with a longstanding history of advocacy and equal opportunity in the fire service. The Vulcans share a long relationship with the Caucus as they were engaged in the fight for equality and justice for people of color as they pursued legal action in the courts involving cases of employment discrimination in sever-

al cities in Westchester. Captain Reggie Crews, President of The Vulcans, and members of the organization were present to accept the honor bestowed on them, including Firefighter Fatima Taylor, the first female firefighter in the city of Yonkers.

The event ended with music and dancing as the members of the Caucus and guests hit the dance floor. Congratulations to the members of the Yonkers Chapter of the Westchester Black Women’s Political Caucus for recognizing the phenomenal women who have worked to ensure that WBWPC continues to thrive, and The Vulcans who work to keep our communities safe!

IN MEMORIAM: Dolly Parton — How She Built a Legacy of Love and Earned Her Place in Black Culture Staff Writer at BlacPressUSA Newswire

Before some of us knew Dolly Parton as the Queen of Country Music, we knew her as the woman behind Whitney Houston’s song. We knew the blonde hair, the rhinestones, and that unmistakable Tennessee voice. But somewhere along the way, Black America came to understand something deeper about Dolly; when she said she loved people, she had the receipts to prove it.

The community is now left to mourn the icon who passed away at the age of 80, on Aug. 25, after dealing with an unknown medical condition. Known for her charttopping country music hits, Dolly never felt as though she belonged only to one genre, or one kind of person. She showed up with humor, humility and a generosity that did not ask who you voted for before offering a helping hand.

She made room for people, and in return, people from every corner of the culture made room for her.

The Song That Brought Dolly and Whitney Together

For Black audiences, the bridge to Dolly will always run through Whitney Houston. Parton wrote “I Will Always Love You” as she prepared to leave Porter Wagoner’s television show and released it in 1974. The original was tender and restrained, a country goodbye delivered with grace.

Then Whitney got hold of it.

Houston’s 1992 rendition for “The Bodyguard” did not merely update the record. She took it to church, then carried it around the world. That opening a cappella moment, the controlled stillness and the key change that made everybody reach for a note they had no business trying to hit turned Parton’s country ballad into a global anthem. The single spent 14 consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, became the best-selling physical single by a woman and earned two Grammy Awards.

And instead of trying to deny contribution or rush to remind everyone who wrote the song, she celebrated the way Houston’s

voice transformed it. In an industry with a long history of taking from Black artists while denying them proper credit, Dolly understood that acknowledging Whitney’s greatness did not diminish her own. One woman wrote an extraordinary song. Another woman revealed everything else that song could become.

— Dolly Parton Parton later shared that she used some of the royalties from Houston’s recording to purchase commercial property in a predominantly Black Nashville neighborhood. She called it “the house that Whitney built.” There was something beautiful about that acknowledgment. Whitney’s voice had generated wealth, and Dolly wanted part of that wealth rooted among people she described as Whitney’s people, and her people, too.

Dolly’s relationship with Black America was not built on pretending she did not see color.

She saw us. In a 2020 Billboard interview, she made her position plain: “Of course Black lives matter. Do we think our little white asses are the only ones that matter? No!” It was blunt, funny, and completely on brand. But Dolly also understood that allyship could not stop with a quote. After learning why the word “Dixie” was offensive and painful to many people, she removed it from the name of her Civil War-themed dinner attraction. She called her previous understanding “innocent ignorance.” More important, she fixed it.

That willingness to listen mattered. Dolly did not perform perfection or become defensive when someone pointed out harm.

She showed that loving people means caring enough to learn, change and do better. In a time when public figures often double down just to avoid admitting they were wrong, Dolly simply chose not to be cruel.

Dolly’s love also arrived in the mail. Inspired by her father, who could not read or write, she launched the Imagination Library in 1995. The program began in Sevier County, Tennessee, sending one free, age-appropriate book each month to enrolled children from birth to age 5. What started in the rural community that raised her grew into an international literacy movement. By the end of 2025, the program had distributed more than 300 million books and was mailing about 3.4 million books each month.

7 Ways Crohn’s Disease Affects Black Women Differently Based on reporting by Garland Journal.

A chronic inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn’s disease impacts millions of Black women worldwide. While symptoms usually present as digestive tract issues, there are also less common problems that arise.

In fact, Crohn’s Disease affects Black women differently. These patients are more likely to need hospitalization, more likely to need surgery, and more likely to get diagnosed late when symptoms have already progressed.

From infertility to abscesses, the impacts on Black women cannot be overstated.

Let’s cover sevent ways Crohn’s hits Black women differently, and what can be done…

1. Infertility A significant issue for any woman of childbearing age, infertility can become more common with Crohn’s. For Black women, it’s even more common. Due to genetic, environmental, and socioeconomic risk factors, the outlook can be distressing. And it’s all due to inflammation. Thanks to the inflammation and scarring common with Crohn’s, Black women may experience issues with their reproductive organs, causing infertility.

The best way to treat this naturally is through regular exercise, an anti-inflammatory diet, and stress management. Beyond that, medical intervention may always be necessary. Consider working with a team of experts in Crohn’s and women’s reproductive health.

2. Bone Density Loss Turns out, Crohn’s Disease isn’t the only thing responsible for bone loss. The treatments for Crohn’s, such as corticosteroids, may also decrease bone density. Over time, this can significantly increase your risk of osteoporosis, made worse by

For Black women, getting plenty of vitamin D and calcium is crucial. Consider combining supplements with weight-bearing exercises. Moderate, consistent strength training can keep your bones hard while preventing injuries.

Your doctor may even prescribe meds to improve your bone health.

3. Period Issues Did you know Crohn’s Disease can mess up your hormones? As a result, these imbalances can lead to irregular menstrual cycles. And for Black women, these impacts may be especially intensified by cultural attitudes toward fertility and motherhood.

The best way to address this is through regular doctor visits. You and your gynecologist can monitor your periods, tweaking things such as diet and exercise if needed.

While medications can help adjust hormone levels, stress reduction is also critical. Meditating, mindfulness, and therapy are all helpful for regulating your menstruation.

4. Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)

Beyond that, ask your doctor about antibiotics and other useful medicines. While potentially painful and distressing, UTIs can be treated effectively when addressed early.

5. Abscesses If you haven’t heard of abscesses, you’re not alone.

These are pockets of pus triggered by infection. They can be unsightly and bothersome, and unfortunately, are pretty common with Crohn’s Disease. For Black women, delays in diagnosis and treatment may make them even worse.

That’s why early detection and routine checkups are so important. Doctors may perform drainage procedures and prescribe antibiotics to help further. Preventing these infections, however, is the first step. And to do that, it’s all about strengthening the immune system. Eat well, exercise, limit drugs and alcohol, and sleep!

6. Sexual Dysfunction

efit levels are determined by a formula that factors in the number of years worked and each worker’s 35 highest paying years of income to determine monthly payments.

The median monthly Social Security benefit in 2024 for Black men age 60 and older was $1,685, compared with $2,179 for white men. For Black women, the projected median monthly benefit was $1,557, compared with $1,692 for white women. Annualized, those amounts equal $20,220 for Black men and $18,684 for Black women, compared with $26,148 for white men and $20,304 for white women.

Most importantly, by 2050 the Social Security Administration projects that Black wealth ($78,579) will be four times lower than that of whites ($320,337).

In the meantime, families still need a place to live.

Owning a home is not just the single largest bill for most families; it also remains the cornerstone to building intergenerational wealth. Homeownership is also still out of reach for most Black families. Last year only 44.7 percent of Blacks were homeowners, compared to 74.6 percent for white households, states the Joint Center.

That means more than half of Black America remain renters, spending $1,667 or more each month for a median-priced apartment in one of the 50 largest metro markets in the country, according to Realtor.com. These prices offer no assurance on when or how much the next rental increase will be.

Paying nearly $1,700 every month for rent may seem high; but it is lower than the June 2026 median monthly mortgage payment of $2,633 for a home purchased for $398,300 with an interest rate of 6.5 percent for 30 years.

Yet another key factor in racial wealth disparities is the disproportionate debt incurred by Black families to pay for college. Although most people never anticipated owing student loans in their mature years, many do. Consumers aged 60 and older also had on average $40,969 in student loan debt, according to the Education Data Initiative.

These and other financial factors contributing to tarnished retirement years is aptly summarized by the Joint Center: “Retirement is not just about what happens at the end of a person’s working life. It is shaped by whether households had the opportunity to build wealth, withstand shocks, and pass resources across generations long before retirement begins.”

A Legacy That Felt Like Love Dolly Parton leaves behind thousands of songs, beloved films, major businesses and enough rhinestones to keep heaven sparkling for a while. But her greatest legacy may be the way she made strength feel soft without ever making it weak. She knew exactly who she was, yet she never needed anyone else to become smaller so she could shine.

For Black listeners, her bond will always be part of that story. “I Will Always Love You” was never about choosing between the white woman who wrote it and the Black woman who took it somewhere new. Dolly gave the world the words. Whitney gave those words wings. Together, they created a piece of American music that refuses to stay inside one genre or belong to only one community.

That is why this loss feels personal, even to people who never met her. Dolly reminded us that tenderness can be powerful. She showed us that changing your mind can be a sign of character, that celebrating another woman’s brilliance does not steal your light and that love means very little if it never becomes action.

Country music will forever call Dolly Parton one of its queens.

But Black culture recognized something in her, too: a woman who respected our greatness, spoke up for our humanity and invested in our children. She did not simply leave this world loved. In the ways that mattered most, Dolly loved us back.

Blood crisis NOW: Immediate Need for Blood Donations

Red Cross issues rare crisis call for donors as summer blood shortage intensifies Patient care threatened as critical blood type levels continue to fall For only the second time in history, the American Red Cross has declared a national blood crisis — and patients may already be feeling the impact. Donors are asked to act immediately to help save lives.

Blood donations have fallen to a four-year summer low, worsening this season’s emergency blood shortage. All blood types are needed, but the situation is especially dire for type O blood as the Red Cross is now limiting distributions of these blood products to hospitals. The supply of type O positive blood has now dropped below a one-day supply.

So be honest. Communicate with any partners about potential worries or issues. Don’t be bashful and seek medical professionals if it’s impacting your life. In some cases, psychological counseling may be the answer.

If there’s no direct physical basis for issues, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can help!

7. Pelvic Discomfort According to various studies, Black women report greater pain from Crohn’s Disease than any other race. Unfortunately, Black patients are also less likely to get the care they need, which can exacerbate pelvic discomfort.

To address pelvic pain, make sure to start with gentle exercises. Walking, stretching and yoga have all been shown to ease discomfort. Your doctor can also provide medication, physical rehabilitation, and non-traditional healing modalities (i.e., hydrotherapy).

And as with any disease, look into support networks. You’ll be surprised what nuggets of wisdom or atypical treatments others like you can share!

At the end of the day, Crohn’s Disease is different for every sufferer.

Although Black women may face unique challenges and more difficult diagnoses, they are not hopeless. Rather, there are numerous ways anyone with Crohn’s can overcome the symptoms.

Talk with your healthcare providers, speak with family and friends, and tackle this thing once and for all!

earned lucrative returns worsened the problem. To insulate themselves from their own bad bets, they ran to federal law enforcement, spinning a story of executive fraud out of a complex debt default they helped create.

The response from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York was swift. Prosecutors dusted off the “Financial Kingpin” statute, a drug-cartel-era law carrying a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years to life.

Instead of stabilizing the business, court-appointed restructuring advisors collected large professional fees while liquidating plants, firing thousands of American workers, and selling off specialized manufacturing machinery. At the same time, they worked with the government to build an indictment against James, while prosecutors cut off his access to the corporate documents he needed to defend himself, according to court filings.

In the end, China has been the real beneficiary of this debacle, quickly stepping in to absorb the domestic market share First Brands once held. In that sense, the destruction of First Brands represents another example of Wall Street undermining Main Street by dismantling an effort to rebuild America’s hollowed-out manufacturing base.

Still, there is good reason to believe the ugly facts will finally be heard on the merits rather than through creditor-driven spin.

The James case is before U.S. District Judge Analisa Torres – a trailblazing Latina appointed by President Obama and veteran of the New York bench known for her impartiality, deep respect for working people and labor, and refusal to let institutional power tilt the scales. In a courtroom led by a judge who understands the challenges outsiders face, this corporate undoing may finally get the thorough scrutiny it deserves.

American democracy can only be sustained when African Americans and other people of color are treated fairly, equality, justly, and equitably.

The racial targeting of successful corporate leaders of color must be stopped.
