Chicago to Host 117th NAACP National Convention: July 18 – July 22, 2026

Thousands of NAACP delegates, alternates, advocates, and game-changers will converge on Chicago for the 117th NAACP National Convention. The powerful theme chosen for this year’s convention is “We, The People”, a call back to the founding of the nation. Through its theme and activism, the NAACP is reaffirming that the fight for equal rights, quality education, accessible health care, and diversity, inclusion and equity is far from over.

The NAACP ACT-SO Program will kick off the week as youth from across the country gather to compete for recognition of their brilliance and creativity, and gold, silver, and bronze medals, accompanied by monetary awards of $2,000, $1500, and $1000 respectively, in the 32 categories of competition. Thirteen gold medalists from Westchester County will be competing in many of the categories. Actor Kelvin Harrison, Jr. will serve as host at the 49th ACT-SO Awards Ceremony, which will be held on Sunday, July 19th. A praise and worship service with memorial for fallen NAACP who have gone from labor to reward. Rev. Dr. Otis Moss, a powerful preacher, author and civil rights advocate will led the service, and Grammy winning gospel artist Jekalyn Carr

There will be a range of workshops and informational sessions for conventioneers to attend to hear the extraordinary line-up of speakers addressing issues concerning the African American community and the nation to help educate, mobilize and inspire those in attendance to leave fired up to do the work when they return to their communities.

There will be a LGBTQA forum with actor, singer-songwriter, author and advocate Billy Porter. TV host, author, activist and cultural commentator Karamo Brown, and activist Trell Thomas serving as panelists for this event.

Highlights of the Convention will include major addresses by President/CEO Derrick Johnson and Board Chairman Leon Russell, update the conventioneers on work the NAACP has been involved in and issues that are of major concern to be addressed in all communities. They are sure to charge up the audience for the work ahead. Joining them will be actors from Beyond The Gates, which is co-produced by the NAACP. The soap airs on CBS on Tuesdays and was nominated for 16 Emmy awards in 2026.

Activists, civil rights leaders, authors, clergy, educators, scientists, and a plethora of experts and scholars will be available throughout the week to share knowledge, resources and solutions for the attendees to bring back to their communities. The work continues for all who seek to help create a better nation for all people.

WHITE PLAINS, NY -- The Westchester County Office for Women (OFW) held its July webinar of the Empower Hour series featuring OFW Acting Director Catherine Borgia and guest, Westchester County Department of Health Commissioner Dr. Sherlita Amler. They discussed key health concerns for women, the essential role of preventative care including regular screenings and healthy habits and tips for maintaining a full and satisfying life as women age. The comprehensive conversation also included personal anecdotes shared by both women, emphasis on the importance of family history in charting one’s healthcare journey and valuable resources available to women in Westchester County.

We must be reminded that many people who came before us gave their lives for our right to vote. Can we allow them to have died in vain? The answer is no. The personal decision is that “we will not”.

Now, in the month of July, while many are on vacation, we must be engaged in planning our workshops and town hall meetings. There are several groups and organizations in the community that have already scheduled such events for the month of September. This is important to know because Labor Day has become the official start of intense political activity going toward the November General Election. The San Diego Voice & Viewpoint will make its facility available to the extent possible for some community meetings, not all. We encourage other members of the Black Press to do the same in their cities where possible. We must not lose this election because of low voter turnout due to a lack of interest and dollars to get us involved. While dollars will help, we must not fail to act because we were waiting for someone else to fund us when we are still Buying What We Want And Not Supporting What We Need.

Still We Stand: Beyond the Peekskill Riots at the Paramount Hudson Valley Theater

Annual commemoration returns September 13 with music, history, community voices, and a powerful celebration of Paul Robeson’s legacy ROBESON’S HISTORY IN PEEKSKILL On August 27, 1949, Paul Robeson came to Peekskill, NY to perform a benefit concert for the Harlem chapter of the Civil Rights Congress. The show was derailed by a violent mob fueled by rising Red Scare fears, racial tensions, political repression, and media propaganda.

But Robeson refused to be silenced. He returned on September 4th, determined to sing and speak for justice. This time, 1,500 volunteer concert guards— mostly union laborers —formed a human chain around the concert grounds to protect him. Inside that barrier of solidarity, 20,000 people gathered to hear Robeson perform spirituals, folk songs, and anthems of resistance.

Though the concert was once again marred by violence outside its gates, the human chain held strong. Thanks to their courage, Robeson’s voice soared over the Hudson Valley that day—defiant, unbroken, and unforgettable.

The violence surrounding those concerts became a defining local and national flashpoint; one that continues to raise urgent questions about freedom of expression, civic courage, and collective responsibility.

COMMENTARY: America Has yet to Become Great — For All of Its People!

Two hundred and fifty years.

That is how long America has been chasing its own promise.

As fireworks illuminated on “The 4th – 250,” the night sky and politicians wrap themselves in the language of patriotism, millions of Americans celebrated the birth of a nation founded on the breathtaking declaration that “all men are created equal.”

It is one of the most beautiful ideas ever written.

It is also one of the least consistently practiced – in America and across the World.

So, as America celebrates its 250th birthday, I offer a question that deserves more than a slogan.

When, exactly, was America “great” — for everyone?

Not for those who owned land while others were owned.

Not for those whose rights were guaranteed while others had to fight, bleed, march, and die just to be recognized as fully human.

Not for those whose freedom was protected while others were told to wait.

If the answer is that we must “Make America Great Again,” then history deserves a simple response.

Great Again…when?

Was America great for the Indigenous nations driven from ancestral lands through warfare, violence, forced removal, and treaties our government repeatedly broke?

Was America great for the millions of Africans stolen from their homeland, sold as property, mutilated and beaten into submission, denied literacy, denied family, denied freedom — and then expected to build the wealth of the very nation that denied their humanity?

Was America great for [Kidnapped Africans] Black Americans who endured another century of lynching, segregation, voter suppression, redlining, unequal schools, mass incarceration, being murdered by law enforce-

ment, and the persistent reality that equality under law has too often depended upon assimilation, ZIP code, skin color, or political convenience?

Was America great for women who were taxed without representation, denied the ballot, denied equal opportunity, and expected to remain silent in a democracy built upon the right to speak?

Was America great for Chinese laborers who built the railroads but were rewarded with exclusion? For Japanese Americans imprisoned without trial because of their ancestry? For Irish, Italians, Jews, Mexicans, Muslims, Sikhs, and countless immigrants who were

repeatedly told they were not “real Americans,” and pitted against those in the Black American communities?

Was America great for LGBTQ Americans who spent generations hiding who they were — not because they lacked dignity, but because society refused to recognize it and did not acknowledge the violence being brought against them?

Was it great for veterans who returned from foreign battlefields only to discover that surviving war was easier than surviving peace on American streets?

Or is it great today for the countless number of

COMMENTARY: America Has yet to Become Great — For All of Its People! homeless American veterans sleeping beneath an overpass while politicians – who have NEVER served – deliver baseless speeches about patriotism?

For the family working two fulltime jobs and still choosing between rent, groceries, or childcare?

For children whose educational opportunities depend more on their neighborhood than their potential?

For communities where healthcare, clean water, economic investment, and equal justice remain aspirations instead of guarantees – even now in 2026?

Ask them.

Then ask yourself.

Because history is not merely what happened.

History is what we choose to remember, what we choose to honestly document.

And what we choose to ignore.

America has accomplished extraordinary things.

We have expanded human knowledge – greatly.

Defeated tyranny abroad – and here at home in America.

Walked on the moon.

Invented technologies that transformed civilization.

Inspired democratic movements around the world.

These achievements deserve admiration.

But achievement is not the same as justice.

Innovation is not equality.

Military strength is not moral greatness.

GDP is not human dignity.

The mythology of American exceptionalism often asks us to celebrate the destination while ignoring the millions of people who were denied a seat on the journey.

Real patriotism refuses that bargain.

Real patriotism tells the truth — even when the truth is uncomfortable.

Especially when it is uncomfortable.

Every chapter of progress in

American history has come because ordinary people challenged extraordinary injustice.

The abolitionists challenged slavery.

The suffragists challenged patriarchy.

Labor organizers challenged exploitation.

Civil Rights activists challenged segregation and human indifference.

Disability-rights advocates challenged exclusion.

LGBTQ Americans challenged criminalization and invisibility.

None of those movements were popular when they began.

Each was condemned.

Each was told to “wait.”

Each was accused of dividing America.

History eventually has revealed something else.

They were not dividing America.

They were asking America to

become America.

That is the unfinished story of this nation.

Not perfection. Progress.

Not mythology. Truth.

Not comfort. Conscience.

As an American, a veteran, and a citizen who has experienced discrimination firsthand, I have learned that honest conversation is not something to fear.

It is democracy’s lifeblood.

It exposes what slogans and staged distractions conceal.

It challenges what privilege often refuses to acknowledge.

It reminds us that loving one’s country does not require believing it has never failed.

In fact, love without honesty is not love at all.

It is public relations.

This “Freedom of Speech” is not an indictment of America.

It is an invitation.

An invitation to see.

To listen.

To question.

To imagine an America where opportunity is not inherited but shared.

Where liberty belongs not to the fortunate, but to everyone.

Where justice is not selective but universal – For All. Because patriotism without accountability becomes mythology.

History without truth becomes propaganda.

And democracy without honest dialogue eventually becomes performance.

As America marks its 250th birthday, perhaps the question is no longer whether America was ever great.

Perhaps the better question is this: Will America finally become what it has always promised to be?

Not for some.

Not for the powerful.

Not for those history has always favored.

But for everyone.

That will be the day America becomes truly exceptional.

When it does not just talk about Godly principles, but exemplify the true Spirit of God. Not because we said it.

Because we finally lived it.

Until then, America’s greatest achievement is not behind us.

It is still waiting to be built.

The bricks are already in our hands.

The only question left is this: Where will you place your brick, Patriot?

Westchester County Youth Bureau Hosts Invest Fest Annual Day of Fun for County Youth

HARTSDALE, NY -- The Westchester County Youth Bureau (WCYB) hosted its fifth annual Invest Fest –a fun-filled day at the County’s Ridge Road Park to highlight the Youth Bureau’s many successful “Invest in Kids” programs. Close to 200 young people from across the County engaged in fun, educational and interactive experiences that kept them motivated and moving. They also enjoyed a picnic lunch and live music with a DJ. The youth partner agencies generously sponsored a wide range of activities designed to be light hearted, creative and mindful such as the WJCS Affirmation Spinning Wheel, the WCA Westchester Kid’s Dreamboard, and the United Way Spatial Awareness Cup Challenge. Other activities included giant Jenga, corn hole and bookmark making. The event continues to be a unique opportunity for youth to gather at one of the County’s pristine parks and learn about the many resources the County has in place to support them.

The Youth Bureau’s “Invest in Kids” funding provides important programs that focus on advocacy, substance use prevention, academic support, college and employment readiness, healthy relationships, civic engagement, physical health and social/emotional well-being.

How people are fighting back from unexpected expenses

People are fighting back against unexpected expenses by building flexible buffers instead of rigid budgets, shifting to side hustles for extra income, shopping around for better rates on essentials, and treating financial literacy as a priority.

More households are asking the same questions. How do you recover when one unexpected cost triggers a chain reaction across the rest of your spending? What helps keep one bad month from turning into long-term financial strain?

If a surprise bill has ever wrecked your entire month, you are not alone.

A survey by Qualtrics for Intuit Credit Karma found that nearly half of U.S. respondents, 49%, said their finances took a turn for the worse in 2025. Most pointed to unexpected expenses as the main reason their budgets slipped.

Financial resilience is not about avoiding problems. It is about being able to absorb them without everything spiraling at once, and building it starts with knowing where the danger lies. Common risks include medical emergencies such as urgent care, prescriptions or dental issues; vehicle repairs or tire replacements; home repairs or appliance replacements; and family emergencies or support.

From there, the next step is setting emergency fund goals. Experts often suggest saving three to six months of living expenses. That might sound like a huge amount, but it does not have to happen overnight. Even $20 a month into a separate account builds a buffer over time. Consistency matters more than the size of any single deposit. Setting up automatic transfers, so a small, steady portion of each paycheck moves into savings, takes the decision out of your hands.

Putting windfalls such as tax refunds or work bonuses straight into that account, rather than spending them, speeds things along. The money should stay out of a primary checking account, where it is too easy to spend on groceries or entertainment instead.

Tightening expenses is another piece of the puzzle. Paying close attention to where money is going makes it easier to stay on top of fixed costs, prioritize what matters most, and adjust spending where it makes sense. That can mean switching providers or dropping a higher-tier plan that is not really needed. Going

through subscriptions and memberships and canceling what is no longer used frees up money that can go toward savings or everyday essentials instead.

Debt deserves the same focused approach. Rather than trying to clear everything at once, tackling the highestinterest balance first reduces stress and frees up cash flow faster than spreading payments thin across every account.

Building skills matters as much as building savings. In 2025, nearly three-quarters of Americans said they either already had a side hustle or were seriously considering starting one. Side income does not have to mean a second full-time job. Basic admin work, tutoring, repairs, digital tasks, driving or delivery, and handmade crafts or products are all common starting points. Taking classes or earning certifications, and keeping a resume up to date, rounds out the picture.

Insurance is the first line of defense, but only if the coverage matches the real risk. If coverage is too low or does not apply to the type of risk faced, most of the cost still lands on the policyholder. Nobody needs every type of insurance at the highest level, but covering the biggest risks first, health insurance, car insurance, home or renter’s insurance, and income protection or disability coverage, keeps unexpected expenses from turning into longterm financial problems. Reviewing policies once a year is worth the time.

Financial literacy, including basic skills such as budgeting, understanding debt, knowing how interest works and making informed choices about saving and spending, is often discussed alongside broader economic conditions, including income and wealth inequality in the United States. It matters, but it does not operate in isolation. An Annuity.org report highlights that many Black Americans continue to face lower levels of wealth, credit challenges and lower retirement savings, factors that can make it

harder to build financial stability over time.

Doom spending, or making purchases in response to economic anxiety rather than as a planned decision, is one of the more common ways financial resilience breaks down. Recognizing the emotional trigger behind a purchase, rather than just the price tag, is often the first step toward breaking that cycle.

Staying on track financially is not a one-time task. Setting aside time each week or month to review accounts and spending, and looking for patterns instead of fixating on every transaction, makes it easier to catch problems early.

Keeping essentials, savings and everyday spending separate makes it easier to see where money is actually going, and anyone who feels overwhelmed should not hesitate to seek professional financial planning advice.

A workable budget does not have to be complicated, but it has to match real life rather than ideal spending.

Starting with actual income, listing fixed costs such as rent, transportation, utilities and basic debt payments, and then splitting the remainder into categories like food, personal spending and savings gives every dollar a job before the month even starts.

Unexpected expenses are part of life. Nobody can prevent every flat tire or every leak, but building an emergency fund and staying on top of debt changes how those events affect a household. The next bill will come. The goal is to already be ready for it.
