WHITE PLAINS, NY -- June 3, 2024 -- On Monday night, the Westchester County Board of Legislators convened its ninth meeting of the year and voted on several crucial legislative items.
Board Chair Vedat Gashi (D - New Castle, Ossining, Somers, Yorktown) said, “As we complete our first half of this year, I am proud of the gains we continue to make addressing the needs of Westchester County from housing to infrastructure to other critical items. Last night, we approved vital infrastructure initiatives including – a Juvenile Detention facility in Valhalla, sewer infrastructure in Tarrytown and improvements at the Mamaroneck Water Resource Recovery Facility. We also passed legislation to expand medical services, to enhance our technological capabilities while ensuring safer roads for our residents, and
to enable community connections on a local level. As we move into the second half of the year, I look forward to passing more legislation that will continue to benefit our residents. I extend my thanks to County Executive George Latimer and my colleagues for their collaboration.”
The Westchester County Board of Legislators has approved a significant investment in the safety and well-being of our youth; a $4 million bond issuance has been approved to spearhead critical enhancements at the Woodfield Cottage juvenile detention facility. This transformative project, estimated at $4 million, is set to revitalize the facility through essential upgrades including roof rehabilitation and HVAC replace-
ment. Funded through bonds and associated notes, this initiative underscores the County’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding our community’s future.
Legislator Erika Pierce (DBedford, Lewisboro, Mount Kisco, North Salem, Pound Ridge, Somers) Public Works & Transportation Chair said, “It is important to all of us at the BOL that we do what is needed to protect the quality of life for those who live and work at the facility. We applaud the County for expediting this project.”
In a resounding commitment to the health and safety of its employees, the Westchester County Board has approved a significant five-year agreement with the Westchester County Health Care Corporation (WCHCC). This partnership
will ensure comprehensive postexposure evaluation and followup medical services for employees potentially exposed to blood borne pathogens, which are infectious microorganisms present in blood that can cause disease in humans. By prioritizing employee well-being, this collaboration underscores Westchester County’s unwavering dedication to fostering a healthy and thriving workforce.
The Board has authorized the continuation of agreements for the Traffic and Criminal Software (TraCS) program, bolstering road safety by streamlining electronic traffic ticket and accident report processing. This innovative initiative, renowned for its efficiency in
electronic traffic ticket and accident report processing, plays a pivotal role in reducing error rates, enhancing data entry accuracy, and expediting data availability for analysis. This decision underscores the County’s dedication to reducing highway fatalities and injuries, ensuring safer roads for all residents.
Legislator Judah Holstein (D - Eastchester, Tuckahoe, New Rochelle) Information Technology & Cybersecurity Chair said, “I am proud to champion the continuation of agreements for the TraCS program. This initiative epitomizes our commitment to road safety, leveraging technology to streamline processes and ultimately save lives. By reducing errors, enhancing accuracy, and expediting data availability, TraCS plays a vital role in ensuring safer roads for all our residents.”
Legislators prioritize strengthening community engagement and
“There is nothing greater, more important or more powerful than the members who make up New York State’s unionized workforce. These skilled men and women have dedicated their careers, their very lives, to ensuring New York is first in class in safely built and maintained infrastructure; critical work that allows every corner of our state to thrive.
As strong as the labor movement is, that strength is undoubtedly magnified when we have steadfast, loyal and fierce advocates in state government; advocates we can rely on to amplify our message and fight for our members’ and working New Yorkers’ collective best interest. I am proud to say we have found that once again this legislative session, and for that I extend my sincere appreciation to Speaker Carl Heastie, Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, Assemblymember and Labor Chair Harry Bronson, Senator Pete Harckham and Senator and Labor Chair Jessica Ramos.
By passing A7491B (Bronson)/S5868B (Harckham), payment of prevailing wages to construction workers will now be required to be eligible for tangible property tax credits associated with brownfield remediation. In short, the men and women doing this important and inherently dangerous work for the betterment of New York State will be highly skilled, earning a living wage, and getting the job done efficiently and safely.
The passage of electronic certified payroll A9265A (Bronson)/ S8608A (Ramos) legislation mandates that contractors and subcontractors report their payroll electronically in a publicly accessible database, giving the NYS Department of Labor the tools needed to expeditiously ensure workers are being paid correctly and labor law standards followed accordingly – an invaluable measure to protect workers and increase accountability.
Our union once again thanks our elected allies, and we look forward to seeing these forward-thinking, pro-worker pieces of legislation signed by
The New York State Laborers’ Union represents over 40,000 members employed in the construction industry and other fields throughout the state. The Middle East conflict raises two critical questions: Is this war just? And is it being conducted with justice?
Is this war just?
The reasons for this war are just. Hamas is a terrorist organization and there is no justification for the Oct 7th attacks. Israel has a right to defend itself. It’s Israel’s duty towards its citizens to ensure their safety. Given this attack, Israel has the right to make sure this never happens again.
This war is not being fought justly. If anything, what is now happening in Gaza is as far from justice as one can get. In Gaza, the IDF, one of the best equipped militaries in the world, is fighting scattered guerilla fighters in a densely populated area. The IDF is indiscriminately killing an entire ethnic group, imposing collective punishment
on the Palestinian people, which is illegal under every humanitarian international law. The IDF has killed more than 34,000 people, ___ of them women and children. These atrocities are not, and will never be, just. This is a disproportionate use of force. This “war” is one-sided, one side killing and the other dying. The world allowed a group of designated terrorists to hijack a population, then allowed the killing of those innocent people under the pretense of fighting the terrorists. History did not start on October 7th, and the support given to Hamas by the Israeli government is well documented. It is not unrealistic to claim that Hamas would not have survived without the support from Netanyahu. [src]
Israel possesses the capacity to conduct a justified military campaign, boasting one of the world’s top intelligence agencies. They are capable of executing precise, meticulously planned operations to neutralize Hamas leadership, akin to the successful removal of Bin Laden. Moreover, their alliance with the US provides them with the necessary resources and technology to achieve their objectives
But Israel chooses not to.
Israel is currently governed by an extremist right wing government. A government infamous for its inclusion of far-right politicians, who believe in jewish supremacy, jewish facism and anti-arab policies. This government’s Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben-Gvir, was convicted of supporting a terrorist group (as classified by Israel) which supports Kahanism, an anti-Arab and religious Zionist ideology.
This is not a fight for the hostages, what Israel is doing is killing the hostages. The IDF, in fact, killed two hostages, who had escaped from Hamas and came out with white flags above their heads. [src] They were killed, because in this war, Israel is asking everyone to turn a blind eye to internationally agreed upon conflit rules.
Some points of view assert the moral superiority of the IDF. This assumption of IDF supremacy creates a dangerous blind spot, allowing Israel to evade accountability for any wrongdoing and act with impunity, regardless of the injustice inflicted.

Your Congressman Jamaal Bowman here, and this week it’s time talk to you about why I am facing the most expensive Congressional primary in history:
It is because I called for a Cease-fire in Gaza.
This position, which the majority of Americans support–including 69% of Democratic voters, and 84% of Black voters in our district–is the reason you are seeing $500,000 dollars a day of commercials filled with lies about me. And it is why you are receiving a never ending flood of mail with the same lies too. It is because I stand with your call for peace. Just like the NAACP does. Like Black Lives Matter does. Like a coalition of over 1,000 Back pastors representing hundreds of thousands of churchgoers do. Because, as one of these pastors, the Rev. Cynthia

Hale in Decatur, GA told the New York Times: “We see them as a part of us. They are oppressed people. We are oppressed people.”
We talked before about how The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), a MAGA-funded right wing lobby group, is funding these commercials. Since then, a report by Politico found that AIPAC is “the single biggest source of Republican donations into Democratic primaries.” And that my opponent, George Latimer, is their number one recipient of those donations.
So let’s talk about why. AIPAC currently has one goal: to ensure the U.S. continues uncritical support and funding of the war led by Benjamin Netanyahu, the MAGA-style Prime Minister of Israel.
This war is wrong. When South Africa brought a case against it to the International Court of Justice, the court ruled the Israeli military must take steps to prevent it from becoming a genocide. Since the Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International have both found that those steps have not been followed. Netanyahu has killed at least 40,000 Palestinian people and 13,000 children, and his military is currently causing over one million people to face potential famine and starvation, a war crime.
Hamas’ terrorist attacks of Oct. 7th were an atrocity and I condemn
Dear Editor:
Voters in Westchester have an historic opportunity in the upcoming primaries to elect the first African American District Attorney in the office’s 206-year history.
William O. Wagstaff, III is a civil rights attorney and community organizer who is deeply committed to justice for all residents of Westchester, regardless of color or stripe. His intelligence, his upstanding character, his skills as a trial lawyer and his passion for equal justice have earned him the wholehearted endorsement of the Working Families Party.
William Wagstaff’s opponent in the Democratic primary is Susan Cacace, who has already proven herself to be unworthy of the position. Her underhanded campaign tactics against William Wagstaff during the petitioning process include making baseless accusations of fraud, hiring an “investigator” to harass his petitioners and smearing his reputation on social media. She is a protege`of Trump crusader Jeannine Pirro.
In the past, she has not only accepted funds from Republican candidates but also donated to their campaigns--all the while leaning on her family’s legacy of involvement in Democratic politics. When she did not receive the endorsement of the Working Families Party in a previous run for Westchester County Court judge, she attempted to steal the ballot line for herself. WFP voters saw through her deceit, however, and handed her a resounding defeat in the primary.
Mercifully, Westchester voters do not have to choose between the lesser of two evils in the upcoming DA race. The choice is crystal clear. While his opponent is conducting her campaign using racist smear tactics taken right from the MAGA playbook, William Wagstaff is taking the high road and campaigning solely on his merits–which are considerable.
His law practice, which concentrates on civil rights litigation, criminal defense and municipal law, has prepared him to take on the substantial challenges of the DA’s office. He proposes the use of data from sources such as the Vera Institute of Justice to prevent crime before it occurs, and the creation of divisions for immigrant justice and hate crimes–to give special focus to those cases. His goals are to reduce crime, promote restorative justice, address racial disparities, provide fair plea bargaining and generally improve the quality of life for all Westchester residents. Our county deserves a DA with impeccable legal skills and outstanding moral integrity. It is rare for voters to be presented with a candidate of such quality and character. Don’t miss this golden opportunity to make history! Vote for William O. Wagstaff, III for Westchester County District Attorney.
Peter Feigenbaum Croton-on-Hudson Secretary, Westchester Chapter Working Families Party
This letter to the editor first appeared in The Gazette (Croton-OnHudson, N.Y.)
“This new law is solely vengeance and lacks any evidence of effectiveness and is aimed at a despised and powerless population that already is subject to dozens of draconian post-conviction collateral consequences. There is virtually no evidence that increasing punishments will have any impact on sexual recidivism.” –
St. Francis College sociology professor Emily HorowitzNot to be outdone by other southern states trying to regress to the Jim Crow era, my home state of Louisiana is trying to regress to the Medieval era.
A barbaric proposal to allow judges to sentence certain convicted sex offenders to surgical castration passed the legislature and awaits Gov. Landry’s signature. Louisiana would become the first state with such a law, joining the ranks of nations like Pakistan and Nigeria.
The bill has been compared to the Tuskegee Study and Josef Mengele’s experiments at Auschwitz II-Birkenau.
Child sexual abuse is a heinous crime with devastating consequences. It is also the crime with the highest rate of perjury or false accusations. In recent years, Orleans Parish in Louisiana has been called the wrongful conviction capital of the United States, with 10 times the number of exonerations per capita than the national average. And Black people are eight times more likely to be wrongly convicted than a white person for a crime involving sexual violence.
Even the sponsor of the bill acknowledged Louisiana’s appallingly high rate of wrongful convictions.
The proposal raises the question of whether Catholic priests in the Archdiocese of New Orleans – currently the target of an active child sextrafficking investigation – would be subject to the draconian punishment.
While Louisiana lawmakers clearly are desperate to portray themselves as tough on crime, their brutal proposal is unlikely to prevent a single assault. Researchers have found no cause-and-effect relationship between testosterone levels and sexual offending. On the other hand, psychological treatment has been shown to reduce recidivism among sex offenders.
It would be naïve to assume that preventing crime is the chief motivation behind this bill, however. Earlier this year, even as violent crime rates were falling, Louisiana rolled back criminal justice reforms that had saved the state more than $150 million.
Severe sentences do not deter crime, retribution often does not help survivors of crime heal, and the U.S. sentencing system overestimates who is a current danger to the community and when incarceration is needed for public safety, as a Vera Institute of Justice report makes clear.
Just as State Sen. Royce Duplessis noted when Louisiana was in the process of rolling back its effective criminal justice reforms, the state continues to prioritize political grandstanding over effective public safety.
“We could have actually done a lot of things to prevent crime on the front-end, instead of continuing to advance policies that do great for campaigns, but do very little to actually prevent crime,” he said.
them. All hostages must be released. But it has long been clear that Netanyahu’s priority is not the safety of anyone, but to set the region on fire for his own political gain.
Because AIPAC is able to spend $20 million dollars against anyone who disagrees with their hard-line, pro-Netanyahu position, it is difficult for representatives in Congress to speak out about this. But you elected me to be a leader, even when it’s hard. And that means standing for what’s right, and standing with you.
Because while Congress is slower to catch up, most Americans want to spend billions funding good jobs, affordable housing, and quality education, not bombs that blow up Palestinian babies in refugee tents. Which is why the ma-
from page 4
jority of Americans–including Muslim Americans, Jewish Americans, Americans registered as Democrats–support a cease-fire.
That’s why AIPAC’s ads rarely mention Israel. Like most MAGA-funded campaigns, they won’t tell you the truth about what they want, because they know that we turned out in record numbers to reject their violent agenda in 2018, 2020, and 2022, and will do it again. So they spread lies about other things instead to distract you from the simple truth: George Latimer stands with his top funder in support of genocide, while I stand with you in fighting for peace.
But even after President Biden announced a cease-fire plan, and even Senator Schumer and
Nancy Pelosi have called for Netanyahu to step down, George Latimer has been silent on the matter. Because he stands with his top funder, AIPAC, in support of genocide. And I oppose it. This election, we decide. We either let lobbyists buy our vote to pay what they want–whether that’s to continue this bloodshed abroad, or protect the Trump Tax Cuts for billionaires here–or keep standing for what we believe in. The humanity and dignity of all people, from Irvington and Port Chester, to Israel and Palestine.
Peace and love, Dr. Jamaal Bowman Member of Congress
On August 8th in Tuskegee, Alabama, our beloved Lola Mae was born to Rosetta and Alonzo Smith. Lola was one of six children. Three siblings transitioned before her: Eleanor, Eddie and Alonzo, Jr.
Lola dedicated her life and passion to helping others, especially those less fortunate. Her commitment to the community was evident through her Past Presidency of the White Plains Greenburgh Chapter of the NAACP and continued Lifetime Membership to the NAACP; her Board Membership in the Greenburgh Police and Advisory Committee; serving as Treasurer of the North Elmsford Civic Association; and as a Board Member of the Westchester County Senior Program. Through her work, she garnered numerous awards and accolades throughout the state.
Lola was the First Lady of the First Baptist Church of Mamaroneck, where her husband, the late Reverend Walter Daniels served as Pastor.
For over 50 years, Lola was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in White Plains, NY. She was a dedicated member of the Missionary Ministry, in which she served more than two terms as Treasurer. When Bethel acquired its 501[c]3 status, she named the
Board, “Passage to Excellence” and served as its Secretary. She initiated the Senior Ministry and served as its President for many years. Lola served as Chairperson for countless church-wide functions, and during her tenure, she also functioned as a Deaconess and Sunday School teacher. Additionally, she was an active member of the Working Churches of Westchester and Vicinity, Inc.
LOLA DANIELS HUNTER, an exceptional member of our community and a long time member of the Greenburgh Police Community Advisory Committee, recently passed away. She was passionate about helping the less fortunate. She was a former President of the White Plains Greenburgh Chapter of the NAACP. She was a founding member of the Greenburgh Police Community Advisory Committee and served on this advisory board for over thirty years. Lola also served as a Treasurer of the North Elmsford Civic Association among many other civic activities. She deserves our thanks for her advocacy which led to numerous improvements at Massaro Park among other initiatives.
When I was a member of the Westchester County Board of Legislators in the 1980s Lola was working for the Commissioner of the County Social Services department. For eight years I would call her daily asking her to help constituents who had contacted me. I have worked with many public servants in my 40 years as an elected official. No official, assistant to an official, liaison to elected officials comes close to being as effective and helpful in problem solving as Lola. I learned so much about government and constituent services from Lola. Two examples:
I will never forget the help Lola gave to a woman named Margaret Shewmake. Margaret, a resident of Hastings, was a Juvenile Diabetic. She was blind, confined to a wheelchair and only left the house to go to the hospital or doctors office. Westchester County Social Services wanted to stop paying for her homecare services and wanted to send her to a nursing home. Margaret was scared
Lola made numerous accomplishments and furthered her education by acquiring a BA from the College of New Rochelle and a Masters of Public Administration from Pace University. She used her education, social, political, spiritual and interpersonal skills to excel as a former District Director for Westchester County Department of Social Services.
Lola leaves a legacy of love and cherished memories to her daughter, Priscilla “Ann” Daniels; her brother, Freddie; sister, Theodosia; a host of daughters and sons in Christ, nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbors and friends.
A public Memorial Service is scheduled for Saturday June 15th, 2024 - friends to gather & Memorial Service starting 10:00AM at Bethel Baptist Church, 1 Fisher Court, White Plains, NY 10601. For more details, to make a contribution in her memory/honor, and/or to share condolences, please visit the website https://LeesFuneralHome.com
As a lasting tribute, she and her family appreciate/prefer a contribution be made in her name/memory/honor to: North Elmsford Civic Association, Inc. - specify Scholarship Fund, 273 Abbott Ave., Elmsford, NY 10523, and/or White Plains/ Greenburgh NAACP, P.O. that she would not be able to live with her young child. I reached out to Lola. She found a loophole in the law – told me to go to the hearing and helped me prepare for the hearing. The hearing officer overruled the decision to force Margaret to get care at a nursing home and let her have a health aide so she could stay at home and be with her husband and family. Her daughter was not separated from her mom thanks to Lola.
Margaret got out of the house for the first time in years. She, her health care aide and husband spent every day during the last years of her life knocking on doors of homeless residents who resided in hotels trying to persuade them to work. She got 8 people off welfare and was recognized by President Bush and Senator Moynihan before she passed away. Had Lola not intervened these 8 families would have stayed on welfare.
I also formed a group called the Have a Heart for the Homeless committee. We raised funds to help families facing eviction avoid homelessness. Lola helped me by screening families asking for help. One woman she recommended that we helped – received a loan from my committee and then when she got back on her feet repaid the loan and gave us a five-hundred-dollar donation. Lola helped hundreds and hundreds of people, never expecting recognition. She just wanted to help others.

I urge you to thoroughly examine the reports of mass graves discovered at Al-Shifa Medical Complex [src] and the disturbing accounts of torture at the Sde Teiman camp[src].
Maybe people are not following the news, or maybe they try to look away to justify it because the situation is inhumane, the atrocities committed are severe and it is hard to swallow. The best way to do it, is to dehumanize the palestinians. Let’s just point out one glaring fact, the countless scores of dead Palestinian children are dead only because they were born on the wrong side of the wall. While it’s crucial to stand by our Middle Eastern ally, we must seriously consider the toll. We must ask ourselves, at what cost? By maintaining unwavering support for Israel, we inadvertently endorse indiscriminate violence: the tragic loss of innocent lives, the destruction of vital infrastructure, and the erosion of basic human rights. When will we draw the line? When will our conscience prevail over political alliances? The staggering ratio of casualties, for each child killed on
With summer knocking at our doors, everyone is reminded that drowning is the leading cause of death in toddlers. The truth is drowning happens when adults become distracted and a small child is near the water.
The Water Guardian Foundation’s goal is to spread awareness about childhood drowning and keep as many children safe from this tragedy. Through the use of a simple and effective strategy, water guardian tags can play a significant role in reducing incidents of childhood drowning.
A tag worn by an adult signifies that they are responsible for any child that has access to the water. By wearing the tag, an adult can assume the role of a “water guardian” and increase the safety of children. Oct 7th, 205 have been killed in Gaza, demands reflection[src][src]. Is this the price we’re willing to pay for security? Is it justifiable to sacrifice an entire population for the sake of one nation’s safety? The current devastation in Gaza, where the death toll accounts for 5% of the population, equates to a catastrophic loss on par with 15 million American deaths. Are these measures truly safeguarding Israel, or are they fueling further extremism on both sides and perpetuating cycles of violence? It’s time to confront the reality of Gaza’s plight—a community subjected to fifteen years of oppression and confinement, infamously called the world’s largest open air prison. If we lack the moral courage to acknowledge these truths, there can be no hope for lasting peace.
I commend all the young jewish voices who have the courage to speak up and call for a ceasefire. With the labels of “antisemite” being attached to those calling for a ceasefire, it takes bravery and integrity to stand by your beliefs publicly. It is pathetic that we live in a world where people are
afraid to call for peace. All I am trying to say is, let’s give peace a chance. Violence begets violence, and the ways of the older generation did not bring any peace in the middle east. I trust that the younger generation, who grew up in comfort of the US, who value human life and value peace, will be able to bring peace to the middle east. The cycle of violence needs to be stopped. It is essential that we prioritize peace and dialogue over violence and division. If we take politicians and armies out of the equation, Palestinians and Israelis can coexist and live peacefully together.
Let’s value all life.
Let’s work for peace.
Let’s call for a ceasefire.
Let’s pray for humanity.
Name WithheldThe Westchester County Board of Elections relies on an election-day workforce of more than 4,000 registered Westchester voters. Ideally, each polling place has an equal number of workers representing the Democratic and Republican parties to provide the front-line checks-and-balances that protect voting rights. These workers are your neighbors; their service is vital to fair elections. There are two more countywide elections in
2024 – a Primary on June 25th and a General on November 5th and hundreds of trained poll workers are still needed. True, it is a long day: set-up begins at 5 AM and the day ends about 30 minutes after the polls close at 9 PM. However, you would be joining your neighbors in performing an invaluable civic duty. Won’t you, or a member of your family, or a friend, consider providing this essential service to our democracy?
The Board provides training on-line and inperson and pay stipends of $25 for each training and $350 for each Election Day. Help us protect the vote!

safety through “National Night Out” Programs by greenlighting intermunicipal agreements with New Rochelle and Peekskill, allocating funds of up to $4,120 and $2,000 respectively. Additionally, the Board approved $2,000 in funding for Bronxville’s “National Night Out” during the April 29th meeting. These initiatives aim to foster police-community partnerships, promote neighborhood camaraderie, and create safer communities through engaging activities such as community tours, presentations, food, music, sports, arts and crafts, and raffle giveaways.
Majority Whip Legislator Terry Clements (D- New Rochelle, Pelham, Pelham Manor) Public Safety Chair said, “We in New Rochelle really value and enjoy our “National Night Out” events as a chance for our residents and police officers to interact in a safe, enjoyable environment. These evenings foster trust and collaboration to benefit the entire community.”
Legislator Colin Smith (D- Cortlandt, Peekskill, Yorktown) said, “National Night Out is a great opportunity for the police and community coming together in a safe and fun atmosphere. It demonstrates the commitment the men and women in uniform have to our communities, the pride they take in their work, as well as demonstrating how important these relationships are to building a stronger community and fair and more equitable policing.”
Minority Whip James Nolan (R- Yonkers, Bronxville, Eastchester) said, ““Thank you to my colleagues on the Westchester County Board of Legislators for voting to approve IMAs for the Town of Eastchester and Village of Bronxville National Night Out Program! National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes policecommunity partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, and more caring places to live. As someone who prides themselves on supporting Law Enforcement, I am an advocate for National Night Out being a way for local police departments to build stronger relationships with the communities they protect and serve.”
The Board has greenlighted additional bonds totaling $2 million to bolster the Replacement of Tarrytown Force Main and Route 119 Gravity Sewer, aiming to address critical upgrades in the region’s sewer system. This initiative, responding to recent pipe breaks and regulatory concerns, includes an emergency bypass and rehabilitation of key sections, underscoring the County’s dedication to environmental standards and ensuring vital sanitary services for residents.
Public Works & Transportation Chair Erika Pierce said, “We last took up this project last year, when the anticipated timeline for the construction of a replacement sewer was much longer, and are thrilled that we now have a path which allows for us to move directly from the construction for the emergency bypass to the design and eventual construction of the replacement which should serve this community well for fifty years.”
The Board passed an amended bond act, reducing authorized bonds to $35.7 million and reallocating $5 million for blower replacement at the Mamaroneck Water Resource Recovery Facility. This addresses the urgent need highlighted by the Department of Environmental Facilities to upgrade existing blowers, ensuring operational reliability and regulatory compliance. Additionally, a $14 million bond issuance is approved for blower replacement and system upgrades, crucial for maintaining infrastructure integrity and meeting regulatory standards. This decision reaffirms Westchester County’s commitment to environmental sustainability and effective wastewater treatment processes, reinforcing its dedication to community well-being and environmental stewardship.
Today, the Board approved a groundbreaking $18 million bond act to fuel a Pumping Station Rehabilitation Program. This transformative initiative targets critical upgrades at the Mamaroneck Water Resource Recovery Facility, benefiting the Mamaroneck Sanitary Sewer District and addressing urgent rehabilitation needs at key stations like Weaver Street, Fenimore Road, and Saxon Woods.
Legislator Catherine Parker (D - Larchmont, Mamaroneck, Rye) said, “Westchester County is committed to ensuring a cleaner Long Island Sound and to improving the waste water treatment facility. With a focus on efficiency, energy conservation, and cost-effectiveness, this legislation underscores the County’s unwavering commitment to environmental protection and regulatory adherence.”
Legislator Jewel Williams Johnson (D - Elmsford, Greenburgh, Tarrytown, White Plains) Budget & Appropriations Chair said, “The approval of this project marks a significant step forward in addressing the critical infrastructure needs of our County and the needs of my district. This project is vital for the safe and efficient transport of sewage, particularly given the recent breaks and the need to meet state-mandated timelines. These measures reflect our commitment to maintaining and improving essential infrastructure for the well-being of our residents.”

Summer medical programs offer high school students a unique opportunity to gain exposure to the medical field, explore potential career paths, and learn more about healthcare delivery and policy. By participating in these experiential opportunities, students can develop critical thinking skills, problem-solving abilities, and teamwork skills.
Summer medical programs can also help students build their resumes and college applications. Admissions officers often look for students who have taken the initiative and pursued their interests outside of the classroom. Participating in a summer medical program demonstrates a student’s dedication to the field and can set them apart from other applicants. Students who participate in these programs also have the opportunity to network with medical professionals and gain valuable mentorship and guidance.
White Plains students, ages 14 and 15, who are interested in pursuing a career in the medical field and participating in a paid summer job program are encouraged to apply before the deadline of Tuesday, June 11, 2024. Contact: Peggy Staffiero, via phone: (914) 422-6722 or email: pstaffiero@ whiteplainsny.gov for more information.
