#NextGenRising with Scholarships from the Deltas

Ask a recipient of a scholarship from the Westchester Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. (“DST-WAC”) what she plans to be when she grows up. The answer might cause you to pause briefly, then applaud and smile joyously!

DST-WAC’s 2024 scholarship recipients plan to pursue degrees in mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, business marketing, political science, astrophysics, biological science, African American studies, computer science, finance, architecture, economics, psychology, software engineering, pharmaceutical re-

search, and sociology. “Traditional” college majors for women, such as teaching, nursing, home economics, and obtaining an “Mrs.” Degree, were not mentioned by DST-WAC’s #nextgen of scholars. Their applica-

tion essays consistently incorporated themes of overcoming adversity and using those experiences to persevere against the odds, with support from family and a faith-filled foundation.

Family and friends gathered at the Greenburgh Public Library on Saturday afternoon, May 4, 2024, to recognize the scholars for their achievements and give them their flowers. Figuratively and literally, each scholar received a red rose and scarf as a gift of appreciation from Gina Jackson, Town of Greenburgh Councilwoman, and Cynthia Turnquest-

Jones; both, staunch advocates for educating young girls and women of color. Affirmative words of wisdom from the Deltas were also in plentiful supply throughout the event.

Rev. Frozine Reece-Smith, Th.D. opened the program with prayer and Mrs. Mona BerryCauthen, Tri-Chair of DST-WAC’s Scholarship Committee, welcomed the standing-room only audience. Donovan Vernon, a 2024 NAACP ACT-SO Silver Award recipient and graduating senior at New Rochelle High School headed to Morehouse College, wowed the audience with a piano performance.

LaToya Blount, Ed.D., also a Tri-Chair of DST-WAC’s Scholarship Committee, presented Certificates of Recognition to participants of DST-WAC’s Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy, a mentor group for girls, aged 11-14. Its activities are designed to help the girls learn more about themselves and their community, prepare them for leadership roles in the 21st century, and encourage academic excellence.

Many of the Delta Academy girls rise to join DST-WAC’s Dr. Jeanne L. Noble Delta GEMS program, which was created to nurture the dreams of African American adolescent girls, aged 14-18. The GEMS program has a public service component, and helps the girls

form goals, while creating a road map for college and career planning. Visit www.dstwac. org or scan the QR code for more information about DST-WAC’s mentoring programs.

The 63rd Scholarship Reception continued with an artistic performance by the Divinely Inspired Mime Ministry of Bethel Baptist Church of White Plains, NY, choreographed by Marion Bobian, to “Your Spirit”, sung by Tasha Cobbs Leonard, featuring Kierra Sheard. The lyrics and biblical reference to Zechariah 4:6, `Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the Lord, appropriately complemented the event.

The call and response by Rana D. Hobson, Ph.D. affirmatively engaged the audience. Specifically, the scholarship recipients were encouraged to embrace their readiness for college by trusting in their abilities, believing their determination is unbreakable, asking for help without hesitating, exercising self-care, and staying optimistic. Dr. Hobson’s comments concluded with a smile and thoughtful reference to Nelson Mandela, who said, “I never lose. I either win or I learn.”

Janiya Morgan, a violist, soon-to-be graduate of the Denzel Washington School of the Arts in Mount Vernon, NY, and 2024 scholar-

ship recipient, performed a solo before a video montage of the recipients was shared with the audience. Thereafter, Sandra Dance-Weaver, Ph.D., also a Tri-Chair of DST-WAC’s Scholarship Committee, presented an impactful and personal snapshot of each scholar, with a Certificate of Recognition and medal representing a race well run.

In all, 21 scholarships were awarded, which included endowments in the name of: Yvonne Mason Williams, the Heritage Book Award, Genevieve and Sheryll Grady, Frances Eleanor Martin, Elizabeth Blair, Loretta Green, the Violet Torch Foundation Book Award, Rosa Kittrell-Barksdale, and Consuelo Scott.

Closing remarks by Kanika Morgan, President of DST-WAC, were followed by closing acknowledgments by Ms. Regina Taylor, also a Tri-Chair of DST-WAC’s Scholarship Committee. Rev. Frozine Reece-Smith, Th.D. closed the program with prayer and blessed the food, which was provided by Panera Bread.

Congratulations to the 2024 Scholarship Recipients of the Westchester Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., who embody the lyrics of the “Greatest Love of All”, sung by Whitney Houston . . . children are our future!

New Rochelle Chapter of WBWPC Sponsors High Tea and Haute Hat

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- It was high fashion extravaganza on Saturday, May 4th, at Hotel NOMA in New Rochelle, as the ladies of the New Rochelle Chapter of the Westchester Black Women’s Political Caucus, Inc. (WBWPC), and their guests, gathered to show off their beautiful haute hats. Wearing the latest and most fashionable attire, the ladies “strutted” their stuff for a hat competition. It wasn’t easy for the judges, as they were all striking, some wearing an entire ensemble to match their hat - dress, handbag and shoes!

Fashion Week in New York had nothing to top these ladies. The Reverend Dr. L’Judie Matt-Simmons, who served as Mistress of Ceremonies for the event, came prepared with her own collection of hats from a European designer and changed throughout the afternoon from one extraordinary fashion piece to another, all beautiful and over the top!

The red carpet was rolled out and the show began. The first place winner of the hat show was Nicole Benjamin, First Vice President of the Countywide WBWPC, who wore a gold braided headpiece which complimented her couture black and gold dress. Second place went to Pamela Wheeler, dressed in a classy tilted green disc-shaped hat with matching green dress and shoes. O.J. Yizar, director of the Greenburgh/ White Plains Chapter, captured third place in her black cowboy fashioned hat which topped off her pink and black outfit. It was not only the hats but the way the ladies modeled their fashions, which certainly brightened the day! All the ladies who came out and participated were truly winners and they all looked marvelous! The ladies were joined by two men who escorted the ladies and modeled on the runway.

Right in the midst of the political season, the event was an enjoyable stop on the campaign trail for County Executive George Latimer, New York State Senator Shelley Mayer, County Legislator Terry Clemmons, New York State Assemblyman Steven Otis, and New Rochelle Mayor Yadira Ramos-Herbert. The New Rochelle Chapter of the Westchester Black Women’s Political Caucus was joined by the presidents and mem-

TO BE EQUAL

We Can’t Afford to Let Anyone Swiftboat Us on Bidenomics

“The truth is that the U.S. economy is a remarkable success story. Don’t let anyone tell you that it isn’t.” – Paul Krugman

Earlier this year, the National Urban League launched our D3 initiative to Defend Democracy, Demand Diversity, and Defeat Poverty. The initiative to combat poverty emphasizes a comprehensive strategy centered on increasing access and equity across several critical areas, recognizing poverty as a significant national issue that jeopardizes the future prosperity of the United States.

The plan includes expanding access to quality education and financial services, making childcare and healthcare more affordable, and addressing the high costs associated with higher education. It aims to improve social safety nets and create affordable housing while advocating for the decriminalization of poverty and fair pay through living wages. This initiative targets the root causes of poverty, particularly in communities of color, and views the eradication of poverty as crucial for the nation’s moral and economic health.

We prioritize these issues, because we know that there are political forces whose agenda conflicts with our progress and our continued work to keep building on progress and fighting for equity wherever and whenever it is necessary.

As we reported in the 2024 State of Black America, which featured a Progress Report on the Biden-Harris Administration:

“When President Biden took office in January 2021, the Black unemployment rate was 9.2%. As of January 2024, that number is 5.2%. Through a series of bills investing in America’s infrastructure, workforce, technological advantage, and climate, the administration has created opportunities for generations of Black Americans to prosper.”

Simply put, by all economic metrics, Bidenomics is working. It is working for our communities, and it is working for all of America.

Progress works on a continuum and progress requires active participation, that is why our D3 initiative also calls upon every citizen to stand up and defend democracy. We know that efforts to suppress votes through intimidation, suppression, lack of access and other efforts to change the laws and make it harder are part of the strategy to keep our

community from participating. In 2022 testimony to a Congressional Subcommittee studying “The Impact of Disinformation Targeted at Communities of Color” the head of the University of Texas Center for Media Engagement said:

“Specific content is drafted as well as tactical behavior employed to influence minority groups. These targeted messages undermine our democracy as they work to alienate and disengage minority groups.”

We see this over and over, so it shouldn’t be a shock that in March 2024 as the economy continued to grow stronger, we saw that Americans for Prosperity, the conservative think tank funded by the Koch Brothers, launched a very strategic and well-funded effort to “Swiftboat” Bidenomics and all the good news and positive outcomes for Americans from bipartisan policies that have led to the strongest post-recession recovery in US History.

The sophisticated campaign led by AFP is both national and targeted in specific congressional districts, including a number of Black and Hispanic represented districts.

Millions of dollars are being spent on ads promoting a false narrative on the Biden Administration’s successful economic policies and to algorithmically profile voters who click on these misleading ads.

As I said in my introduction to this year’s state of Black America, “Our abiding commitment to freedom is undermined by discriminatory voter ID laws, gerrymandering, the shuttering of polling places in predominantly minority neighborhoods, limits on early voting, and reckless purging of voter rolls.”

It is also undermined by divisive disinformation. We know that before any election gets here, anti-racial justice forces will push false narratives and disinformation designed to depress us and divide us in America. By every factor that matters, it is important to remember that Bidenomics Works. These “Swiftboat” tactics that target us on our phones and in our computers are a dangerous tactic we must remain vigilant about as we fight on for justice and equality.

Penola “Penny” White Passes at 89

On Wednesday morning, April 24, 2024, God dispatched his Angels to escort Penola Nelson White from earth to her heavenly home. She was 89 years of age.

Penola was born on August 25, 1934 in Ossining, New York, to Henry Nelson and Suluter Bunch Nelson. She was educated in the Ossining School District and graduated from Ossining High School in 1952. After graduation, she attended modeling school in New York City and enjoyed a stint in the fashion world. Throughout her life, she was known for her flair for fashion and elegance, a true stylish “Fashionista!”

On August 20, 1955, she married Clark Gilbert White at St. Ann’s Church in Ossining, New York. The family settled in Peekskill and from this union had four children, Clark Jr, Kenneth, Tanya and Darla. Her husband predeceased her in 1995, after 40 years of marriage.

Penola was a true people person who loved interacting with people from all walks of life. She was affectionately known as “Penny” in the community while working at the Salvation Army in Peekskill, and to those she met at her job at Twice Upon A Time, a consignment shop in Ossining and later in Croton-on-Hudson. Because of her love of antiques and art, she was employed at an antique shop. In addition, she volunteered for many years at the Peekskill Paramount Theatre. Penola was known for her loving spirit, vibrant personality

and generosity, as well as for her beautiful attire, jewelry, accessories, and scarves.

Penny enjoyed cooking and made the best sweet potato pies, always making extras to share with others. She loved music and dancing at family gatherings, weddings and other venues. She loved going with her family and friends to New York City’s museums, art and Broadway shows and concerts. She especially enjoyed the lights and excitement of the Christmas holiday season and dining in NYC restaurants! Travel-

ing and visiting family and friends around the country was also one of her pleasures.

Penola’s family was her life and she enjoyed spending time with them, especially celebrating birthdays and holidays with her children and grandchildren. A doting and adoring mother, grandmother and great grandmother, she cherished every moment she could spend with them.

She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Gilbert, and her sister, Gloria Wilkins.

Penola’s memory will be cherished by her loving and devoted children; sons, Clark White, Jr. , Kenneth White (Alejandra), daughters, Tanya White Pagan and Darla White Mason; ten loving grandchildren, Branden and Cameron White; Damon and Kenneth White Jr., and Amanda and Gabrielle Male; Michael Pagan; Dana Jr., Tyler and Shane Mason. She also leaves five great- grandchildren, Savanah, Anthony, Aidan, Miliani and Dylan; a devoted brother, Earl Henry “Teetot” Nelson; Leesther Brown; many nieces and nephews; a devoted cousin, Yvonne Bert; best friend and soul sister, Betty Amory; and many friends she made throughout her life’s journey.

A service of Celebration of the Life of Penola White was held on Friday, May 3, 2024, at Nardone Funeral Home in Peekskill, with the Rev. Don Foster officiating. Interment followed at Hillside Cemetery in Cortlandt Manor, NY.

Rep. Bowman’s Statement on Netanyahu’s Imminent Deadly Invasion of Rafah

WASHINGTON, DC — Today, the Israeli Military ordered Eastern Rafah to evacuate after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed he will invade Rafah with or without a ceasefire deal. Rafah is currently the most densely populated area in the world, with over 1 million Palestinian civilians sheltering and seeking a path to safety.

Congressman Jamaal Bowman, Ed.D. (NY-16) released the following statement in response:

“To save as many lives as possible and end the ongoing violence in Rafah and across Gaza, we must keep fighting for an immediate, lasting ceasefire that includes the release of all the hostages and an end to the attacks. I hope that President Biden will continue to push Netanyahu to deescalate the conflict and prevent a full-scale invasion from Rafah. He must use all tools at his disposal, including conditioning or withholding aid and weapons to Israel, to ensure Netanyahu accepts a ceasefire deal that includes the release of hostages. A full-scale invasion of Rafah, one of the last designated safe places in Gaza, will be devastating. There are over one million civilians there, and it would mean tens of thousands more innocents killed as a result. I join the tens of thousands of Israelis and Palestinians in protesting the horrific decision to ignore the ceasefire deal and invade Rafah. We have a moral responsibility to govern in a way that centers those most impacted and nurtures humanity instead of succumbing to more warmongering and violence.”

What Do Kindergarten Teachers Mean By “Ready for School?”

NNPA NEWSWIRE — If you always do things for your child, and always tell them what to do, they will not be able to make their own decisions and learn how to be independent. One good rule of thumb for parents of toddlers: whenever possible, avoid doing things for your child that they can do on their own.

At this time of year, many preschool parents are worrying about whether their child will be ready for kindergarten. What are the things their child should learn? Do they need to make alphabet flash cards? Invest in worksheets so kids can practice math. I talked with kindergarten teachers to find out what they think kids need to know to be kindergarten-ready. You may be surprised: Readiness for school, teachers say, does not mean that your child will have mastered all the kindergarten skills on Day One. Instead, it means that your child will take pleasure in learning how to do things on their own.

One kindergarten teacher said to me, “I can teach kids their ABCs. I can’t teach them —at least not very efficiently—to help them get along with others and to understand that they aren’t going to get their own

way all the time in school.” If you always do things for your child, and always tell them what to do, they will not be able to make their own decisions and learn how to be independent. One good rule of thumb for parents of toddlers: whenever possible, avoid doing things for your child that they can do on their own.

Kindergarteners are expected to take responsibility for their belongings. They put their lunch box in the right place. They hang up their coat. During the day, they use the restroom and wash their hands by themselves. In the

cafeteria, children must put the straw in their juice box or open the milk carton. They must get the foil on top of the applesauce. “The whole first month in the cafeteria, we’re helping children learn to open things,” one teacher said. “They’re always surprised that ketchup packages have a little line that shows you where to tear to get the ketchup out.” So, teach your child how to do those things before the first day of school.

Let your toddler eat (and accept that mealtime will be messy and sl-o-w, at least at first). Let young children choose what they want to wear—and relax if they choose to wear the polka-dot shirt with the checked pants. Encourage them to use the crayons they want to use in their coloring book and do not be surprised if you see a purple horse or a red elephant.

Follow the rule that teachers use when they are teaching a new skill:

First, I do.

Then we do.

Then you do.

COMMENTARY:

Wake Up, Black Voters.

Don’t Let Trump’s Lies Fool You

ST. LOUIS AMERICAN —

There is data that shows that the Democratic candidate for president over the last five presidential elections since 2000 has averaged 90% of the Black vote with an average of only 8% for the GOP candidate. In addition, the overwhelming concern of most Black voters continues to be race and racism with a particular aversion to the reprehensible and duplicitous Trump who has shown repeatedly that he is an instigator of racial hate. Any relationship he has with Black voters has been deceptive and disingenuous.

The fact that exit polls showed that Donald Trump received 9% of the Black vote in 2016, the highest number since George Bush in 2000, and then won 12% in the presidential race in 2020 should be a cause for concern.

Moreover, some recent polls surprisingly showed that if the presidential election were held today, 17% of Black voters say they would vote for Trump, and even more troubling, 20% say they would vote for someone other than either Trump or President Biden.

Black voters have been the largest and most loyal voting bloc for Democrats for years, but

there has been a shift in the number of Black voters who consider themselves Democrats.

That trend could be explained partially by a number of younger Black voters with no direct experience with the civil rights movement. They have scant knowledge and no direct personal memory. They feel disappointed with Democrats and the Biden administration and seem willing to consider Trump despite his blatant and toxic racial baggage.

This disconnection with the Democratic party is felt most strongly with some young Black males, many in critical battleground states like Michigan, Wisconsin, Georgia, Arizona, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina where Democrats need every vote. Most of these states have large concentrations of Black voters in their urban areas. This is a special issue in potentially close races like this one because the Electoral College gives Republicans a massive advantage in federal elections. This system allows them to govern with a minority of the popular vote.

However, there is also data that shows that the Democratic candidate for president over the last five presidential elections since 2000 has averaged 90% of the Black vote with an average of only 8% for the GOP candidate. In addition, the overwhelming concern of most Black voters continues to be race and racism, with a particular aversion to the reprehensible and duplicitous Trump, who has repeatedly shown that he is an instigator of racial hate. Any relationship he has with Black voters has been deceptive and disingenuous.

Fortunately, the overwhelming majority of Black voters cannot be bamboozled or deceived because we know the record of his stance on healthcare with his recent attacks on

Obamacare, opposition to greater diversity in the workplace and efforts to restrict our voting rights as well as his racist, conspiracist “birther campaign” that sought to undermine the then-president, Barack Obama.

Still, we can’t simply ignore the reports that Trump is possibly making inroads with Black voters while Biden is losing support from us. Granted polls have been shown not to be reliable predictors of what Black voters will do. Actually, our biggest worry should probably be third-party voting (third party presidential candidates have no chance of winning. This is a binary election and only a Democrat or Republican can win) and potential voter apathy, despite the high stakes in this contest to determine whether Donald Trump is elected again.

Clay Cane, a Sirius XM radio host, rightly said that the 2024 presidential election is not just a choice between the lesser of two evils but this is an election to see if we can stop Trump and his pernicious plans to institute a future dictatorship to carry out his vile policies. A Trump victory would be a grave threat to the well-being of Black Americans for certain.

In any case, the Democratic party must recognize the seriousness of the disenchantment of many Black voters who don’t feel motivated to make it to the polls and campaign more directly and intentionally in our community.

Furthermore, we ourselves must make an unprecedented and determined push to get to the polls in greater numbers to help stop this monstrous man and his MAGA minions from regaining control of the White House.

What Do Kindergarten Teachers Mean By “Ready for School?”

Whether it’s shoe tying or making a sandwich, start by showing your child what to do. Then practice the same skill together, working side by side. Finally, let your child do it alone, first while you watch and then independently. And let me just say one word here about shoes—the bane of every kindergarten teacher. Shoelaces do not stay tied. “They drag on the floor. They drag across the restroom floor. They go into kids’ mouths,” a kindergarten teacher told me. “They need my help retying them. If I have 25 students, that’s 50 feet. And at 30 seconds per shoe tie, that’s 25 minutes a day I’m not teaching them letters or numbers or how to get along with others,” she said. That doesn’t mean children have to be able to tie their shoes

before they start kindergarten. “Just put them in different shoes,” the teacher wisely advised. And really, just reread that part about shoelaces that have dragged on the kindergarten restroom floor ending up in the child’s mouth. You’ll probably keep your kid in Velcro shoes until they’re 20.
