WHITE PLAINS, NY -- The White Plains Department of Public Safety held a special ceremony to honor the remarkable legacy and professional contributions of retired Police Officer Helen Littleberry. In a long-overdue recognition of her service, the Department officially promoted Ms. Littleberry to the rank of Detective on Friday, May 1, 2026. Helen Littleberry joined the White
Plains Police Department in 1967, breaking significant racial and gender barriers as the first African American woman to serve on the force. During her twenty-year tenure (1967-1987), she served with distinction in several key units, including Street Crime, Warrants, and Youth Division. Most notably, Ms. Littleberry dedicated 12 years of her career to the Detective Division. Despite her exemplary performance
and dedication, she faced systemic challenges common to the era that prevented her from receiving the formal promotions earned by many of her male counterparts. “It is a genuine honor to celebrate the legacy of Officer Helen Littleberry,” said Public Safety Commissioner Wade C.
