WHITE PLAINS, NY -- The White Plains Department of Public Safety held a special ceremony to honor the remarkable legacy and professional contributions of retired Police Officer Helen Littleberry.

In a long-overdue recognition of her service, the Department officially promoted Ms. Littleberry to the rank of Detective on Friday, May 1, 2026.

Helen Littleberry joined the White

Plains Police Department in 1967, breaking significant racial and gender barriers as the first African American woman to serve on the force. During her twenty-year tenure (1967-1987), she served with distinction in several key units, including Street Crime, Warrants, and Youth Division.

Most notably, Ms. Littleberry dedicated 12 years of her career to the Detective Division. Despite her exemplary performance

and dedication, she faced systemic challenges common to the era that prevented her from receiving the formal promotions earned by many of her male counterparts.

“It is a genuine honor to celebrate the legacy of Officer Helen Littleberry,” said Public Safety Commissioner Wade C. Hardy. “Her presence in the department provided vital representation and inspired many who might have otherwise felt dis-

Honoring Women on Mother’s Day: For Their Leadership, Legacy, and Impact

Mother’s Day invites us to pause and reflect—not only on motherhood, but on the profound ways women shape families, organizations, and society itself. It is a moment to honor mothers in all their forms while also recognizing a deeper truth: the qualities that define care, resilience, and vision have long been central to women’s leadership and their lasting contributions to our world.

Across history and throughout our communities today, women have led with courage and purpose—often while bearing the invisible labor of nurturing others. Mothers, grandmothers, caregivers, mentors, and advocates are builders of social infrastructure. They teach values before laws are learned, model leadership before titles are earned, and move institutions forward long before recognition follows.

At the Women’s Leadership Institute (WLI), this understanding is foundational. WLI’s mission is to elevate the talents and status of women, recognizing that when women are supported in leadership, entire communities benefit. The Institute’s work reflects a simple but powerful truth: women’s leadership—whether exercised in the home, the workplace, or public service—creates lasting impact.

Motherhood as a Leadership Practice Motherhood, in its many forms, is one of the most enduring examples of leadership in action. It requires strategic thinking, long‑term planning, adaptability under

pressure, and values‑based decision‑making skills that mirror the very competencies organizations seek in effective leaders.

WLI also recognizes that not all women are mothers, and not all leadership looks the same. Mother’s Day, therefore, is not only about honoring those who give birth or raise children. It is about celebrating women who mentor, protect, advocate, teach, heal, and lead, often without formal acknowledgment. Leadership is not defined by a single role; it is defined by impact.

Pinkster Jubilee Returns to Philipse Manor Hall YONKERS, N.Y. (05/06/26) — Philipse Manor Hall State Historic Site invites everyone to celebrate the Afro-Dutch holiday of Pinkster, a festival of spring, family, culture, and resistance with live music, dance, games, crafts, food, vendors, history, & more on Saturday, May 16, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Philipse Manor Hall State Historic Site (29 Warburton Ave., Yonkers, NY). Pinkster Jubilee 2026 is part of Yonkers Arts Weekend and is free and open to all.

Pinkster is the Dutch name for Pentecost, a religious holiday and celebration of spring where people took time to travel and visit family. In the New Netherland Colony, Pinkster was transformed into a unique Afro-Dutch celebration - a week of temporary freedom for enslaved people.

Able to travel, earn money, and gather in groups, Pinkster allowed enslaved people to take a break from their endless work, see separated family members, preserve and pass on culture to the next

Join us for live music and performances from The Pinkster Players, a group of highly skilled musicians and music historians who have been studying West African music in the Americas for over 30 years. Led by acclaimed percussionist Chief Baba Neil Clarke, and including teaching artist and multi-instrumentalist Ayodele Maakheru, acclaimed fiddler Enrique “Rique” Prince, and others, the Pinkster Players bring the history of Pinkster to life - embodying the spirit of celebration and culture-keeping for Africans in America.

Experience the history and movement of capoeira in a free workshop with Professor Corjua of Capoeria Luanda, the Capoeira Center in New Rochelle, NY. Professora Coruja (Renée Rinaldi) was first introduced to capoeira while studying abroad in Sao Paulo, Brazil. What origi-

nally started as an interesting topic of research, soon became a lifestyle. After graduating from college, Professora Coruja moved to NYC where she started her career as a teacher and also began searching for the right place to train capoeira. After several years of training in Harlem, she met Mestre Bom Jesus and in 2007 decided to start training under his tutelage in New Rochelle.

Engage with award-winning storyteller April Armstrong, who weaves melodies and words for a refreshing and compelling style of storytelling. Her story programs are fun and interactive.

She tells stories for schools, colleges, libraries, museums and festivals. She tells multi-cultural folktales, including African-American and Latino stories. April’s stories delight, inform and inspire audiences of all ages.

American College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists Announces Dr. Camille Clare Its 77th President We are pleased to announce that today, Camille A. Clare, MD, MPH, CPE, FACOG, became the 77th president of ACOG! Dr. Clare, a longtime and decorated ACOG leader, well-regarded academic, and practicing ob-gyn, is ACOG’s first Black woman president.

In her inaugural address, Dr. Clare reflected on her journey to leadership, noting that: “Legacy is something each of us creates every day. It is the impact we have on our patients, the knowledge we share with our learners, the science we advance, and the voices we raise. Legacy is what happens when one person’s commitment creates opportunity for others . . . As the first Black woman president of ACOG, I am deeply aware of the moments, mentors, and support that carried me to where I am today, and of what this moment represents for those who are watching and wondering whether they, too, can lead.”

Dr. Clare is a board-certified ob-gyn. She received her medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, New York, and completed her obstetrics and gynecology residency at the State University of New York at Buffalo. She obtained an MPH in Health Policy and Management at New York Medical College. In 2012, Dr. Clare received the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics Excellence in Teaching award. In May 2018, Dr. Clare was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society, Iota Chapter in New York as a New York Medical College faculty member.

Tri-County Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics New York Set for Tuesday, May 12

Westchester County, NY — The 2026 Hudson Valley Tri-County Law Enforcement Torch Run will take place on Tuesday, May 12, bringing together law enforcement agencies from Westchester, Rockland, and Putnam counties for the fifth consecutive year. Officers and community members will unite to carry the “Flame of Hope” in support of Special Olympics New York.

Celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2026, the Law Enforcement Torch Run is more than a run, it’s a statewide movement led by the “Guardians of the Flame.” More than 6,200 law enforcement officers representing over 470 agencies across New York proudly carry the Flame of Hope each year, raising awareness and critical funds for Special Olympics athletes and their families.

As it has in years past, the New York State Thruway Authority will commemorate the event by lighting the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge in red the night of the run, in

Board Passes Wage Protections for County Construction Workers WHITE PLAINS, NY—The Board of Legislators unanimously passed the Westchester County Lessor Prevailing Wage Act, guaranteeing construction workers on County-leased properties the same standard union wages they would earn on County-owned job sites.

The measure closes a longstanding gap in state labor law that left workers unprotected on County-leased properties. Under existing law, construction on privately owned land, even when leased by the County and directly supporting County operations, can fall outside the legal definition of “public work,” leaving workers without prevailing wage protections.

During a pre-vote press conference in the Board’s rotunda, labor leaders including Westchester Putnam Building Trades Council Vice President Ed Cooke and Louis Sanchez, Business Representative for Local 3, IBEW, joined Chairman Vedat Gashi, Vice Chair Terry Clements, Majority Leader Judah Holstein, Majority Whip Shanae Williams, Minority Leader Margaret A. Cunzio, Minority Whip James Nolan, Legislators Erika L. Pierce, Jenn Puja, Nancy E. Barr, Anant Nambiar, Jewel Williams Johnson, Emiljana Ulaj, David T. Imamura, Tyrae Woodson-Samuels, David J. Tubiolo, and José I. Alvarado.

Chairman Gashi (D–New Castle, Ossining, Somers, Yorktown) said, “When Westchester County invests in construction, every worker on that job deserves fair pay—regardless of whether the building is owned or leased by the County.

This law closes a loophole and sends a clear message: Westchester puts workers first.”

The new measure applies to lease agreements of 10 years or more and construction projects exceeding $250,000 undertaken on behalf of the County.

Contractors and subcontractors on those projects will be required to pay prevailing wages and maintain certified payroll records to verify compliance. The law takes effect for new lease agreements entered into 120 days after adoption.

It includes an exemption for emergency construction work required to protect public health and safety.

White Plains Common Council Chambers, 255 Main Street. Retired Detective Helen Littleberry’s family and former colleagues, current law enforcement officers, dignitaries and members of the community were invited to attend.

The City of White Plains Department of Public Safety was eager to present Ms. Littleberry with her detective badge in the presence of her peers and loved ones, finally awarding her the rank she rightfully earned through decades of service and pioneering leadership.

Speaking with Kids About Mental Health

When recently speaking to a group of soon-to-be therapists, and one person made the comment that they were afraid to work with kids. They were concerned that they wouldn’t know the right thing to say, that they wouldn’t be able to help, or worse, that they would damage them for life (trust me, it’s unlikely).

But you can imagine that if trained therapists feel anxiety about talking to kids about their mental health, it can be even more difficult for parents and caregivers without this training! I have had the good fortune of working as a school counselor (and being a parent myself), and all the kids have taught me so much, which I’m happy to share with you.

Here are some tips about how to talk to kids about their mental health: 1. Don’t wait until something is wrong to have a conversation with your child. It is

so helpful to have regular conversations about 4. Tell your child what you are noticing mental health so your child does not feel tar- and then check in to see if it is accurate. Ben “Moody” Harney is the founder of Mother Shuckers, the Only Oyster Cart in Brooklyn. Fascinated by the story of Thomas Downing, “the Oyster King of New York,” the son of freed slaves who peddled oysters on Wall Street in the late 1800s, and went on to open one of the most successful oyster restaurants of his time, Harney envisioned operating his own oyster cart.

Ben believes the oyster could regain its place as an everyman’s food.

Learn African-style drumming with Kofi Donkor. International AwardWinning Sculptor, Master Drummer and Teacher Maxwell Kofi Donkor considers the preservation of the indigenous Ghanaian art and culture his mission. He brings the Ghanaian history and its way of life to the world. Kofi has been drumming and performing internationally for over 30 years. He directs the African drum and dance ensemble Sankofa. He uses African culture in assemblies, lectures, performances, drum circles and traditional African Ananse (spider) stories to promote diversity in all cultures: in schools, communities, conferences as well as festivals.

She has also previously served as associate dean of diversity and inclusion at New York Medical College from 2016 to 2020. Dr. Clare has received numerous awards for teaching medical students and residents in her academic career, for 10 consecutive years, from New York Medical College. Dr. Clare will be rejoining the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Medical Center with a focus on faculty mentorship and community engagement and outreach. Dr. Clare has recently been named Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Women’s Health at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, her alma mater. She is an active member of ACOG, serving in leadership roles on the Section, District, and national levels, and on several national committees. She is past ACOG District II chair, and immediate past national secretary.

Dr. Clare was recognized as an ACOG Mentor of the Year in 2017 and received the Distinguished Service award on behalf of ACOG District II in 2021. She has also served the global community by providing gynecologic care to patients in Jamaica as a member of the Organization for International Development, which is particularly important to her as her parents immigrated to the United States from Jamaica for their educational pursuits. Dr. Clare is an active member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated, Westchester Alumnae Chapter, and has had a lifetime commitment to community service, volunteerism, and mentorship.

Over the past half-century, New

York’s sentencing laws have driven the crisis of mass incarceration, from the 1970’s Rockefeller Drug Laws to the 1990’s “tough on crime” era, which has disproportionately impacted Black and brown communities. Right now, over 30,000 people are incarcerated in New York’s prisons.

Nearly 75% are Black or brown.

It is time for New York to reform our unjust and archaic sentencing laws. Under New York’s current law, there is no mechanism for a judge to be able to review or reconsider an excessive sentence.

Because of the coercive power of mandatory minimums, 98% of convictions come through guilty plea, not trial, making a mockery of our system of justice. And while other states have modernized their earned time laws to support rehabilitation, New York lags behind. On May 12, we’ll travel to Albany for rallies, press conferences, and meetings with lawmakers. Transportation and food provided from across the state.

Together, we’ll demand the end of racist and unjust sentencing laws and call for passage of the Marvin Mayfield Act, Second Look Act, and Earned Time Act. RSVP here to join us in Albany on May 12 to fight for Communities Not Cages.
