WHITE PLAINS, NY -- The Westchester County Youth Bureau, in partnership with the Lower Hudson Valley My Brother’s Keeper Alliance and the New York State My Brother’s Keeper Alliance, hosted a Youth Leadership Symposium aimed at overcoming obstacles and fostering leadership and empowerment for young men of color. The first in-person MBK symposium since 2019 attracted over 350 students, superintendents and elected officials from Westchester County and Hudson Valley school districts to the County Center in White Plains.

The event kicked off with inspirational messages from educational and community leaders and featured a keynote address by speaker, motivator and

author Brad Butler, II, entitled “From IEPs to Degrees.” Attendees then went on to expert and student-led panel discussions on a wide range of relevant topics such as the value of education in attaining lifetime success, teen dating and emotional resilience, and the impacts of social media and violence on youth culture.

During the Superintendents Fireside Chat segment, school district leaders from across the Hudson Valley didn’t just answer questions; they were challenged to name commitments, close gaps and show up differently for the students who need them most. The conversations moved beyond acknowl-

Black Women-Owned Businesses Join Consumer Reports in Urging NY Lawmakers to Pass the Beauty Justice Act

ALBANY, NY—Consumer Reports (CR) and Black womenowned businesses are at the New York State Capitol today to urge the State Assembly to pass the Beauty Justice Act (S.2057B/A.2054B). This legislation would ban intentionally added toxic substances from personal care and beauty products sold in New York State. The national nonprofit consumer organization CR and the beauty and salon businesses are headquartered in New York. The lobby day coincides with an anticipated Senate floor vote today, amplifying the coalition’s push for the bill’s passage and underscoring the urgent need for beauty and personal care product safety.

While advocates look for the Senate to reaffirm its strong support from last session, today’s meetings with New York State Assembly members delivered a unified call to advance the Beauty Justice Act out of the Ways and Means Committee.

After passing two other committees unanimously last session, the bill’s progress was halted in Ways and Means, preventing it from reaching the full assembly for a vote.

The bill has already demonstrated strong legislative support. Last session, the State Senate passed it overwhelmingly, 49-10. Today’s mobilization is aimed at urging the Assembly to follow suit and clear the path for the bill to go to the Governor’s desk. In meetings with Assembly members, advocates thanked the bill’s current champions and asked remaining members to officially cosponsor.

Toxic substances that are already banned in food and children’s products are still showing up in the beauty products millions of New Yorkers use every day. California, Maryland, Washington, the European Union, and Canada have all acted. New York has a clear opportunity to close the gap in the state, and the Beauty Justice Act is the vehicle to do it. We thank the Senate for its overwhelming support and call on the Assembly to pass this bill now.” — Oriene Shin, Safety Advocacy Manager, Consumer Reports

Support for the bill extends beyond consumer safety organizations.

In 2025, nearly 40 New York business owners signed a letter backing the legislation, pushing back against industry claims that stricter safety standards would harm small businesses. This lobby day makes clear that small business owners see the opposite as true—that safer products are good for their customers, their brands, and their bottom lines.

As a business owner, I chose to build a brand rooted in transparency, plant-based formulation, and hair wellness—because it was necessary. Safer products are not only possible, they already exist. What we need now is accountability. New York has the opportunity to lead— protecting public health and setting a new national standard.” — Debra Hare-Bey, Founder, On My Heavenly Hair, Inc.

Dr. Connally Receives Inaugural Board Volunteer Spirit Award from Volunteer New York!

TARRYTOWN, NY — Dr. Alexandria Connally was honored on Friday, April 17th at Volunteer New York!’s Annual Breakfast Event, where she received the inaugural Board Member Volunteer Spirit Award. The inspiring, sold-out event brought together more than 600 attendees to celebrate the power of service and community impact.

The Volunteer Spirit Awards, presented annually by Volunteer New York!, recognize individuals, organizations, and leaders who exemplify an extraordinary commitment to volunteerism and civic engagement. These awards celebrate those who go above and beyond in strengthening communities, advancing equity, and inspiring others to serve. The inaugural Board Member Volunteer Spirit Award specifically honors a board leader whose dedication, vision, and hands-on service have significantly advanced the mission of Volunteer New York! and expanded its impact across the region.

Dr. Connally’s recognition highlights her unwavering commitment to service, leadership, and advocacy on behalf of young people and communities across Yonkers and beyond. Her work reflects the very essence of the Volunteer Spirit Award—selfless service, transformative leadership, and a deep, sustained investment in community empowerment.

During the ceremony, Dr. Connally delivered a deeply moving speech that reflected on her personal journey

and the values that have guided her life’s work.

“I am deeply honored to receive this recognition from Volunteer New York!,” Dr. Connally shared. “To be acknowledged by an organization that embodies service at its highest level is truly humbling.”

In her remarks, Dr. Connally spoke about her roots in Yonkers, emphasizing the profound influence of her upbringing and community.

“I often say, ‘I am Yonkers,’ because Yonkers is not just where I’m from— it is who I am,” she said. “I grew up in foster care, and because of that, I didn’t just have one family—my entire community raised me.”

She credited teachers, mentors, neighbors, and advocates for shaping her path, adding, “That is why service is my currency on this earth. It is how I give back for all that was given to me.”

Dr. Connally highlighted her work advancing equity and opportunity through education, leadership, and initiatives such as My Brother’s Keeper. Her career has included collaborations with prominent leaders and institutions, yet she emphasized that her mission has remained constant: ensuring every young person feels seen, valued, and supported.

“This award is not just mine—it belongs to every young person who trusted me, every colleague who walked beside me, and every member of this community who continues to believe in the power of service,” she said.

She concluded her remarks with gratitude and a call to continued action: “I will continue to serve, to uplift, and to lead with love, because service is not just what I do—it is who I am.”

Dr. Connally also honored the legacy of Regent Judith Johnson, her mentor, sharing a guiding principle she calls a “Judithism”:

“The greatest act of service is to lift as you climb.”

The event served as a powerful reminder of the impact of volunteerism and the individuals who dedicate their lives to strengthening communities through service.

edgment and into action, challenged to make specific, measurable outcomes for the students and community partners who were present.

Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins said: “The MBK Youth Leadership Symposium and events like it are invaluable to creating the confidence and skills needed for our young men of color to have a seat at the table. In a world that often defines people by what they lack, we can be inspired by the narratives shared to-

day about how adversity can be the catalyst to success. I want them to understand that excellence is a habit to be practiced every day, and that they have the power to shape their own reality and make this community a better place.”

Westchester County Youth Bureau Executive Director Ernest McFadden said: “At the Youth Bureau, our mission is to ensure every young person has access to the guidance, resources and opportunities they

need to thrive. Seeing hundreds of students come together with educators and community leaders reminds us that empowerment happens when young people are surrounded by support, inspiration and opportunity.”

MBK New Rochelle Program Coordinator Nate Adams said: “To witness the outcome of the Hudson Valley Symposium on April 21 was truly a rewarding experience for the committee that worked for over six months to provide this space for our students. To see the light in the eyes of our students, to hear the conversations from our young men in the breakout sessions and to feel the energy in the auditorium lets me know that there are some truly empowered young men formulating their life story here in the Hudson Valley school districts.”

MBK New Rochelle student Quincy Fosu said: “I was granted the opportunity to present in one of the breakout sessions on something I truly see myself doing in the future. The MBK event gave me the opportunity to build on what already exists within me. I wish we could be poured into like this

more often. The statement that stuck with me is that ‘gems can be given freely, but their value depends on the hands that use them.’”

Right NOW Leaders Host André G. Early said: “The 2026 MBK Symposium was proof that when educators, policymakers and young people occupy the same space with intention, something transformative happens. Those conversations don’t stay in the room, they travel home, into classrooms, into policy and into the lives of young men across the Hudson Valley.”

The MBK Alliances are consortiums of municipalities, local educational agencies and non‐profit organizations that have accepted former President Barack Obama’s My Brother’s Keeper Community MBK Challenge. Since 2018, Westchester County and the Youth Bureau have partnered with 14 local MBK programs to improve life outcomes of boys and young men of color, and help change the narrative too often associated with this demographic.

Executive Director Paula Miritello said, “My Brother Vinny is a 100% volunteer, small but mighty organization serving homeless veterans. Homeless vets go into new homes with absolutely nothing–no bed, no dresser, no nightstands, the basic things people take for granted. Assisting our vets would not be possible without people joining together to support one another. That’s the most important part, knowing we matter and that we make a difference every day. I’m extremely grateful to the Board of Legislators and know our veterans are grateful. Thank you.”
