For over three decades, Harry Jefferson, Jr. mentored thousands of students as they walked through the halls of White Plains High School. However, before serving as a teacher, administrator, and assistant principal, “Coach Jeff” earned his tiger stripes on the track and football fields. After he graduated from White Plains High School in 1953, the Student Government Vice President, Captain of the Track Team, and member of the All-County, All-Metropolitan, and National High School All-American teams took his talents to the University of Illinois (UI). While at UI, #28’s stellar performance earned him recognition on the International News Service’s All-Midwest Unit, second-team honors on the All-Big Ten squad, and honorable mention All-America laurels. After earning a degree in physical education from UI in 1957, Jefferson played football for the Quantico Marines and was named to the All-Sea Service team as a commissioned Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps. Following his military career, Jefferson continued his football career with the New York Giants. When the door to his career with Big

The door opened wider after Jefferson earned a master’s degree from Columbia University, while coaching the White Plains High School varsity football, basketball, and track teams. With “Coach Jeff” at the helm, the 196566 Tiger basketball team captured the Section One County Basketball Championship and Jefferson was named Coach of the Year. After retiring from White

Star of Bethlehem Baptist Church Celebrates 133rd Anniversary By Yvonne B. Bert

Join with the Star of Bethlehem Baptist Church as they celebrate the 133rd Anniversary of the church, which was founded by the late Henry E. Duers in 1890. Born a slave in Windsor, North Carolina, after serving in the Union Army, Rev. Duers studied theology at Union Theology Seminary in Richmond, Virginia to become a Baptist minister. He moved north and established church missions in numerous communities in the Westchester community. During 1889, Rev. Duers moved to Ossining as a Missionary from Messiah Baptist Church in Yonkers and began holding Bible study and prayer service in various homes. On June 5, 1890, the church was formally organized. On November 12, 1890, as First Baptist Church of Ossining was celebrating its Centennial Anniversary, members of the Mission participated in the service. It was during this service that Star, sponsored by First Baptist Church, was recognized as an institution of God. The Church was originally named the Centennial Star of Bethlehem Colored Baptist Church, as it was established during the Centennial celebration of the First Baptist Church of Ossining and occurred during the Christmas season. After meeting in multiple homes and locations in the area, the first edifice was built in 1892 at 148 Spring

Street; however the small structure was torn down and a larger building was constructed to accommodate the growing congregation. Services were held at 148 Spring Street until the current building was constructed at 304 Spring Street, the site of the former Ossining Hospital. Rev. Duers served as pastor until he retired from the ministry in 1924, but his influence in the Ossining community was ever present until his passing in June 1940. The church has remained steadfast in shining as a spiritual beacon providing religious guidance to those seeking to know the Word of God. Star of Bethlehem has been lead by many dynamic leaders since its inception. Rev. Shaun Ellison Jones serves as the current pastor. Theme for the Anniversary is “133 Years of Being Deeply Blessed By God.” The celebration will commence on Wednesday with a Revival Service. Bishop Nicholas O. Parks showed him a tearsheet of an ad depicting the look he wanted for the title character. The model in the ad was Roundtree. While Shaft is among the best-known and most enduring example of the genre that became known as “Blaxploitation,” Roundtree himself rejected the term. “I’ve always viewed that as a negative. Exploitation. Who’s being exploited?” he said in 2019. “But it gave a lot of people work. It gave a lot of people entree into the business, including a lot of our present-day producers and directors. So, in the big picture, I view it as a positive.” The character of John Shaft – described in the film’s theme song as “the cat that won’t cop out when there’s danger all about” and “a sex machine to all the chicks” -- marked a turning point in the depiction of Black men on the silver

screen. As Roundtree said, “the image kids see of him on the screen is of black man who is for once a winner.” Roundtree also took part in the 1977 landmark television miniseries Roots, which drew the third-largest audience in television history and sparked a national conversation about race and history. “You got a sense of white Americans saying, ‘Damn, that really happened,’” Roundtree said in television special to mark the miniseries’ 25th anniversary. In the late 1990s, Roundtree embarked on a campaign to raise awareness and erase the stigma surrounding breast cancer in men, having felt pressured to keep his own diagnosis and mastectomy a secret for fear of losing work. “The industry doesn’t like sick people,” he wrote in Essence. “My mastectomy left me with

Guest preacher for the morning worship will be Rev. Elgin Taylor. The community is invited to come out to help celebrate Star of Bethlehem’s 133 years of service to Ossining and the surrounding communities Star of Bethlehem Baptist Church is located at 304 Spring Street, Ossining, where Rev. a permanent scar that runs from where my left nipple used to be to way back underneath my armpit, and it ain’t pretty … I did a lot of tap dancing to hide my illness.” He later called his diagnosis “a backhanded blessing” after fans credited his candor with saving lives. Roundtree’s proudest work was the 1996 film Once Upon a Time … When We Were Colored, about a Black Mississippi family confronting inequality in the South. It was the first of Rountree’s films that his father, a Pentecostal minister, could be persuaded to watch. “And at the end, he looked at Richard, and he said, ‘Well done, my son,’” director Tim Reid told NPR. “And that’s the only time that his father had ever praised him for anything that he had ever done in his life.”

Biden Faces Eroding Support Among Arab, Muslim, and Black Americans, all Crucial Demographic Groups By Stacy M. Brown, NNPA Newswire Senior National Correspondent @StacyBrownMedia

From left to right: Rep. Nancy Pelosi, President Joe Biden, Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Rep. James Clyburn. / NNPA

Representatives Rashida Tlaib (D-Michigan) and Dean Phillips (D-Minnesota) have reportedly emerged as formidable critics of President Joe Biden’s bid for reelection, publicly displaying a split within the party as Democrats desperately attempt to hold onto the White House in 2024. Despite their ideological differences, the two lawmakers have independently voiced concerns about Biden’s policies, creating a unique challenge for the incumbent. Tlaib, known for her progressive stance on issues, has sharply criticized Biden for his unwavering support of Israel, going so far as to accuse him of enabling the “genocide” of Palestinians in a video statement. As a Palestinian American, Tlaib’s stance could potentially sway Muslim and Arab American voters, a crucial demographic in swing states like Michigan, which is Tlaib’s home state. Phillips, hailing from the centrist wing of the Democratic Party, has taken a further step by launching a primary challenge against Biden in New Hampshire. Advocating for generational change, Phillips has expressed doubt about Biden’s ability to defeat former President Donald Trump. He has also pledged to address economic concerns, vowing to “make America affordable again.”

The convergence of Tlaib and Phillips’ criticism of Biden is not entirely coincidental. Both represent various facets of the Democratic Party’s post-Trump landscape: Tlaib stands for the radical progressive movement through her association with the Squad. Phillips is a member of the Problem Solvers Caucus, which promotes nonpartisan solutions. Politico noted that both factions gained prominence during the Trump era, propelling Tlaib and Phillips to Congress in the 2018 elections. They later joined forces with Biden in the successful effort to unseat Trump in 2020. The fact that they are now voicing their discontent with Biden signals that the president may face internal challenges within his party. Recent polling data from The New York Times and Siena College indicates that Biden is trailing the twice-impeached former President Trump in five of the six crucial battleground states, just one year before the 2024 election. Concerns about Biden’s age – even though Trump is just three years younger – and dissatisfaction with his handling of the economy contribute to this decline in support. On average, Biden is trailing Trump by 48 to 44 percent across these states, all of which he won in 2020. And that’s despite Trump’s myriad of legal problems, which include facing 91 felo-

ny charges, having been found responsible for sexually assaulting a writer, and having a judge declare that he committed business fraud. The most recent poll also highlights a growing discontent among voters, with a majority feeling that Biden’s policies have personally harmed them. Additionally, the multiracial and multigenerational coalition that supported Biden in 2020 is showing signs of strain, as demographic groups that once strongly favored him are now more evenly split. Among voters under 30, Biden’s lead is marginal, and his support among Hispanic voters has significantly dwindled. In urban areas, Biden’s advantage is now half of Trump’s lead in rural regions. Notably, male voters are now favoring Trump by a significant margin, reversing a gender-based advantage that Democrats had previously enjoyed. Even traditionally strong Democratic demographics, such as Black voters, are showing increased support for Trump, reportedly reaching 22 percent in some states. Biden’s handling of the Israel-Hamas conflict has also generated controversy, particularly among Arab American voters, with support for the president dropping from a comfortable majority in 2020 to just 17 percent.

The poll also shows an uptick in support for Trump, who is likely to be the Republican candidate in 2024, with 40 percent indicating they would vote for him, a 5-point increase from 2020.

Politico and Axios have offered insight into the dynamics shaping the 2024 election. Politico’s analysis underscored the pivotal roles of Tlaib and Phillips. At the same time, Axios provided context regarding the ambitions of prominent Democratic figures like California Governor Gavin Newsom and Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker in the lead-up to the 2028 presidential race and their ignorance of Biden’s 2024 re-election efforts.

She is a Jack and Jill of America, Inc. Associate Member (2018 and 2022 Distinguished Mother) And Go On Girl! Book Club NY2 Chapter Facilitator (2022 Phenomenal Women Honoree). She believes in self-care, giving back and connecting with loved ones. When asked, “which business tip has been the most helpful to you”, Kecia response was: My parents Leroy and Obie Palmer, homebased entrepreneurs who owned a moving business and day care center when I was a little girl, gave me the most helpful business tip, “Be kind, courageous, caring and treat others as you would like to be treated.” They taught me how to breathe, listen to my gut feelings and set boundaries when making decisions. They were my dream makers, telling me from birth that I was special and could achieve all that I believed. They encouraged me and my three brothers to “be in the “rooms” that we wanted to be in, put in the work and get our education, of which no one can take away from us. Several members of Kecia’s family, friends, clients and community organizations were in attendance to congratulate her on her accomplishment. She was humbled, thankful grateful and appreciative of their support, flowers and being in the room with her as she and 24 other women were recognized for a job well done. It takes a village! She is blessed to have a village each and every day as she advocates for minority and women owned businesses for their piece of the “pie”! Congratulations also to Woman Innovator Honoree Joanne Dunn, Executive Director, Youth Shelter Program of Westchester, on her recognition for her tireless, dedication to many youth throughout Westchester whom she advocates for daily!

Impending Shutdown: Political Rifts and Global Crisis Converge

By Stacy M. Brown, NNPA Newswire Senior National Correspondent @StacyBrownMedia

The recent appointment of far-right House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) follows a tumultuous three-week period during which Congress went without a Speaker, underscoring the deep divisions within the Republican Party. As the Nov. 17 deadline for a government shutdown looms, Washington grapples with a confluence of domestic political divides and escalating global conflicts. The recent appointment of far-right House Speaker Mike Johnson (RLouisiana) follows a tumultuous three-week period during which Congress went without a Speaker, underscoring the deep divisions within the Republican Party. Johnson, who desperately tries to endear himself to the twiceimpeached and now four-times indicted former President Donald Trump’s maiden legislative venture, a $14 billion bill aimed at fortifying Israel’s defense against Hamas, drew sharp criticism for its exclusion of aid to Ukraine and substantial cuts to IRS funding. The move, viewed as an overture to win favor with Trump, underscores Johnson’s conservative agenda.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) minced no words in his assessment of Johnson’s approach, emphasizing the bill’s lack of bipartisan support. “His first major legislative effort was not bipartisan at all,” Schumer stated. “And I think he’s going to learn the hard way that that doesn’t work.” He further pointed out that both the president and he had reservations about the bill, and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell also did not endorse it. Former Rep. Liz Cheney (RWyo.) leveled serious concerns about Johnson’s ascendancy to the Speaker’s chair, branding him as “dangerous” due to his support for overturning the 2020 election results. Cheney, a vocal critic of Trump during her congressional tenure, argued that Johnson’s actions contradicted his professed commitment to upholding the Con-

stitution. She remarked, “He was willing to set aside what he knew to be the rulings of the courts, the requirements of the Constitution, in order to placate Donald Trump.” USA Today political writer Rex Huppke provided a scathing assessment of the situation, calling attention to the perceived lack of direction within House Republicans. “If you haven’t already passed out from the vacuous stupidity of all that, you might be wondering: ‘Hey, what are these House Republicans doing about the rapidly approaching Nov. 17 deadline to keep the government open?’” Huppke remarked. He went on to paint a vivid picture of internal discord, referencing legal troubles Trump faces and characterizing the House Speaker with a “disingenuousyouth-pastor vibe” facing the challenges of avoiding a government shutdown right before the holidays.

In the Senate, a bipartisan effort led to the passage of three critical government funding bills covering areas such as military construction, veterans’ affairs, agriculture, transportation, and housing. The decisive 82-15 vote aims to break the deadlock and provide a path to avert a potential shutdown. Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.), a member of the Appropriations Committee, expressed hope that this progress will compel Congress to approve a short-term funding bill, affording the time needed to finalize a budget before year-end. “There is definitely uncertainty with regard to how the House will respond to our strong bipartisan votes on appropriation bills,” Baldwin said. “But we hope that they will conclude, especially seeing the strong bipartisan votes, that the only way forward is through bipartisanship.”
