Summer is in full swing at Washtenaw County parks and recreation facilities! Our team is committed to providing outstanding recreation activities for all ages. Take a look inside this Guide for opportunities to play, to learn, or to engage in nature. This Guide covers July and August offerings around the parks.

A few summer updates: •

Meri Lou Murray Recreation Center is back to regular hours and is welcoming returning members! Hours of operation are: Monday through Friday—6am to 8pm, Saturday— 8am to 6pm, and Sunday—9am to 4pm.

Looking for a fun-filled day of play? Check out the Water Park! Rolling Hills Water Park opened on June 21 and is open until Labor Day. Tickets this summer are available online only as we manage capacity counts at the Water Park. Get your tickets at parksonline.ewashtenaw.org.

Blue Heron Bay Splash Park located at Independence Lake County Park is expected to open for the summer the first or second week of July. The opening has been delayed due to the manufacture’s equipment being unavailable. Once the equipment arrives, staff is ready to open the splash park and welcome visitors for the summer! For the latest updates, visit our website at washtenaw.org/independencelake or the park Facebook page.

Pierce Lake Golf Course in Chelsea offers an exceptional value for 9 and 18 hole rounds.

Located conveniently off of I-94 and M-52 in Chelsea, the course is readily accessible to all Washtenaw County residents. If you haven’t tried Pierce Lake, reserve a tee time today and see why it’s a hidden gem!

Independence Lake Park PROGRAMS & ACTIVITIES

FAIRY DOORS

July 9 | 6:00pm - 8:00pm | $10 per Family/Household, Up to 4 Members Vehicle Entry Fee Required Create special homes for the park's small creatures! Start by decorating fairy doors to take home with you to create a fairy home at your own house. Then explore how to use materials with the nature around you to design and build a new fairy home.

Supplies will be provided as well as a section of the woods for you and your family to build and place your Fairy Door. The check in table will be at the Independence Woods Pavilion. Registration #IL461100.

NATURE SCAVENGER HUNT

July 23 | 6:00pm - 8:00pm | $5 per Family/Household, Up to 4 Members Vehicle Entry Fee Required Put your nature eyes to the test as we explore through the park in search of nature’s many wonders! Come with your family on a nature scavenger hunt at Independence Lake. Each child will be given a bag and a list of clues and sent out to explore the nature trail. As you explore, take time to notice things you may not have noticed before and make a note so you can share the cool things you saw on your scavenger hunt with us. The check in table will be at the Beach Center Pavilion. Registration #IL461100.

SPECIAL NEEDS SPLASH DAY

July 24 | 9:00am - 11:00am | Resident - $4.00/person & Non-Resident - $5.00/person Vehicle Entry Fee Required Blue Heron Bay Spray Park will be opening two hours early exclusively for children with special needs and their families to experience the splash pad in a stress-free and relaxed environment. Staff will have the slides open and gently enforce the rules to keep everyone safe on the spray pads. Concessions open at 11:00am if your family would like to stay to purchase lunch. Blue Heron Bay will be open to the public starting at 11:00am but families are welcome to stay.

STAR GAZING AND PERSEIDS

Aug 13 | 9:00pm - 1:00am | $5 per Family/Household, Up to 4 Members Vehicle Entry Fee Required Enjoy a night under the summer stars! Bring your blankets. We will gaze upon constellations and possibly see “shooting stars” from the Perseid Meteor Shower.

Park Naturalist, Kelsey Dehring, will be sharing various night sky objects. Plans are in place for a small fire and s’mores. If it ends up being a cloudy night, then we will go on a creatures of the night hike. Registration #IL461100.

FAMILY BOARD GAME NIGHT

Aug 27 | 6:00pm - 8:00pm | $5 per Family/Household, Up to 4 Members Vehicle Entry Fee Required Although board games can be planned any time, coming for a family night of board games under our beautifully lit pavilion is a sure-fire way for the whole family to have fun and create new memories. A variety of board and card games will be available for your family. Refreshments and treats will be provided. The check in table will be at the Independence Woods Pavilion. Registration #IL461100.

DISC GOLF NIGHTS

July 9 & Aug 13 | 9:00pm - Midnight | Vehicle Entry Fee Required $5/night or $30/Bag Tag (DG Nights included in annual fee) Come join us for Disc Golf Glow Nights at the park. Join us the second Friday in July, August and September as we illuminate Red Hawk west or Red Hawk course baskets.

This is the only time each month that you can disc golf in the park after dark. Bring your own glow discs, glow tape, and glow lights for your discs.

YOGA IN THE PARK (VIRTUAL CLASS) - 1 & 2

BIRDING BASICS Parker Mill County Park | Naturalist, Kelsey Dehring The magic of birds is they seem to be everywhere you go. Local parks, backyards, apartment balcony railings, quiet forests, and city streets. Birding can be enjoyed just about anywhere, but with so many species it can seem like a daunting hobby. Learn tricks to identifying birds based on habitat, markings, and sounds. We will also discuss what to look for in binoculars. No equipment needed. We will have basic binoculars for you to use. MORNING MINDFULNESS HIKE West Lake Preserve | Naturalist, Elle Bogle When the sun is warm but not hot and the grass is still stippled with dew, Mother Nature greets us with a loving embrace. We can feel it in the wind, see it in the flowers, and hear it in the bird songs.

Join naturalist Elle Bogle and Mindful City’s Julie Woodward for a morning meditation and mindfulness hike through beautiful West Lake Preserve to connect with the serenity of the natural world around us. STEWARDSHIP SATURDAY Watkins Lake State Park & County Preserve | Rec Passport Req. Stewardship Coord., Katie Carlisle Join us the second Saturday of every month to help the environment and explore new places. Learn about stiltgrass with our partners at the JLW CISMA. Stiltgrass is an invasive plant that’s new to the region. Early detection and rapid response are important to try and stop the spread of this aggressive grass. Volunteers learn how to identify and manage stiltgrass, and help map new populations throughout the woodlands. No experience needed.

Meri Lou Murray Recreation Center Hours The Meri Lou Murray Recreation Center will continue modified hours of operation. Beginning July 6, the facility hours will be:

• Monday through Friday; 6am to 8pm

• Saturday; 8am to 6pm

The goal of Washtenaw County Parks & Recreation Parent Tot and Preschool Lessons are to get toddlers and preschoolers comfortable in the water. These instructor-led classes help provide a solid foundation for swimming skills that will last a life-time.
