This winter all trails lead to Washtenaw County Parks! Whether you’re looking for passive or active recreation, your local park provides activities for all ages and abilities. Independence Lake Park PROGRAMS & ACTIVITIES

YULE LOG MAKING

December 3 | 5:45pm - 6:45pm & 7:00pm - 8:00pm | Ages 10+ $10 per Family/Household, Up to 4 Members These yule logs bring the magic of winter into your home! A selection of greenery, pinecones, and ribbon will be available to create a yule log to display as a winter decoration in your home. Feel free to bring any additional items from home. Participants will be trimming greenery and hot gluing items to their logs. Check-in at the Beach Center Pavilion. Registration # IL461100.

ALMOST SOLSTICE NIGHT HIKE & CAMPFIRE

December 17 | 7:00pm - 9:00pm | $5 per Family/Household, Up to 4 Members Join us in celebrating one of the shortest days of the year. Our Indy Woods paved path will be lit with luminaries and lanterns for a self-guided walk. The walk takes approximately 25 minutes. There will be a campfire, s’mores and hot cocoa. Dog walkers welcome and if conditions are right there might be a special guest from the North Pole. *Note: Trail not plowed in event of snow. Check-in at the Beach Center Pavilion. YOGA IN THE PARK - WINTER YOGA PACKAGE

Sundays, January 2 - March 27 (no class 1/16) | 9:00am - 10:00am | $120 Slow flow yoga class, all levels welcome, no experience necessary. Emphasis is placed on core strength, flexibility, balance, concentration, and breath control. Registration # IL441104. Cannot commit to three months of yoga? Check out our Winter 1, Winter 2 yoga registration options. This package includes both Winter 1 and Winter 2 in-person/ virtual yoga. In person yoga will be held here in the park. If you would rather do yoga virtually then Zoom with us. The time and day are the same. If weather is not favorable in-person yoga may be substituted for virtual session for that day only.

Independence Lake Park PROGRAMS & ACTIVITIES

JANUARY NIGHT HIKE

Jan 7 | 6:30pm - 8:30pm |$5 per Family/Household, Up to 4 Members Explore the park on a lantern lit half mile and one-mile trail with a self-guided hike through the woods. Weather, trail type and trail conditions will dictate which trail will be lit. There will be a campfire, s’mores, and hot cocoa at our Beach Center Pavilion after your hike. Dog walkers welcome. Check-in at the Beach Center Pavilion. Participants must check in by 7:30pm to complete program by 8:30pm. Registration # IL431310.

WINTER FAMILY CAMPFIRE COOKING

Jan 8 | 10:00am - 2:00pm | $5 per Family/Household, Up to 5 Members The cold clear air is perfectly complemented by a crisp, crackling fire. Join naturalist Elle Bogle for a winter day of campfire cooking. Learn how to properly identify and gather materials and build a cooking fire, then build your own. Take in the beauty of the winter landscape while enjoying a tasty meal you prepared with your new knowledge! Matches, grates, and cast iron pans will be provided but bring your own food to prepare. All registrants will receive a list of sample menus in advance. Check-in at the Beach Center Pavilion. Registration # IL461100.

KIDS' ICE FISHING CLINIC

Jan 22 | 9:00am - 10:30am & 11:00am - 12:30pm | Recommended Ages 5-12 $10 per Family/Household, Up to 4 Members New to Ice Fishing? Join us for an informational, hands-on clinic to learn about this fun winter activity! Kids will learn about winter fishing, safety practices, and types of fish. Clinic includes receiving fish identification and logbook. Practice skills learned on the ice with staff and then warm up with hot cocoa and treats at the end. Bait and fishing equipment will be provided for use during event. Check-in at the Beach Center Pavilion. Registration # IL431321.

STARGAZING WITH YOUR SWEETHEART

Feb 11 | 7:00pm - 8:00pm & 8:00pm - 9:00pm | $5 per Couple (Adults Only) Enjoy an evening gazing upon the stars with your sweetheart by your side. We will learn what constellations are visible in the winter sky and tell their stories. After watching the sky enjoy some delicious treats next to a toasty fire sipping on warm cocoa. Program led by Park Naturalist, Kelsey Dehring. Check-in at the Beach Center Pavilion. Registration #IL461100.

ICE FISHING DERBY

Feb 12 | 7:00am - 3:00pm | $20/Adult & $15 for Kids 12 and Under Join us for a fun-filled day of fishing! For adult division First Place longest Northern Pike, Second/Third Place for Pan fish. For child division, the longest fish will win a prize. Bring your own bait and equipment. A Fishing license is required per DNR regulations. Lunch will be provided between 11am and 1:30pm. No alcohol, ATVs or snowmobiles. Vehicle entry fee is included. Check-in at the Beach Center Pavilion. Registration # IL431300.

Washtenaw County Parks and Recreation is offering

Lifeguard Training December 22, 27, 28, 29 2021 The Lifeguarding course will provide lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel take over. Upon successful completion participants will receive American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED which is valid for 2 years. A portion of this course must be completed online. Must attend all dates and times, complete and pass prerequisites testing, online portion and written exam to receive certification.

Class information:

Be at least 15 years old Swim 300 yards, continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. Tread water for 2 minutes, using only the legs. Complete a timed brick retrieval event within 1 minute, 40 seconds. Swim 20 yards. Surface dive, to a depth of 12 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object. Return to the surface and swim back to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

Join me, naturalist Elle Bogle, for a nature hike where we’ll leave a special treat for the local wildlife. ALMOST SOLSTICE MINDFULNESS HIKE Fox Science Preserve | Naturalist, Elle Bogle As we approach the darkest day of the year, we also approach the returning light. Celebration of the winter solstice dates back to ancient times as a start to the solar year and the rebirth of the Sun as well as marking the beginning of winter. Join naturalist Elle Bogle and mindfulness instructor Julie Woodward for a hike in the beautiful Fox Science Preserve to celebrate the returning sun and the transition into winter. In the stillness, we are able to listen to the songs of birds, breathe in the scents of the forest, feel the distinct texture of each tree's bark, catch glimpses of hawks, and see the tracks of animals out for winter wanderings. THE WINTER LIFE OF THE SKUNK County Farm Park - Medford Pavilion | Naturalist, Shawn Severance The first misty evening of winter, when fog floats above softening snow, the sleep-drunk skunks emerge. Their wandering trails may seem to go nowhere, but they are looking for love. Enjoy an evening hike looking for animal signs and exploring the winter forest through the eyes of a skunk. Perhaps we will try to call in an owl or two. This hike is the first in a series where we learn to appreciate the animals we love to hate. If you look past the slime, scales, stingers and stench you will discover the beauty and importance of every critter. Pre-registration is required. STEWARDSHIP SATURDAY Park Lyndon North | Stewardship Coord., Katie Carlisle Hike to some lesser-traveled areas of Park Lyndon and help improve the habitat by removing invasive shrubs with hand tools. This volunteer workday is also a great opportunity to explore and learn about different ecosystems in Southeast Michigan. No prior experience is needed; tools and know-how will be provided.
