PRESIDENT'S LETTER

In “Bloom: The Toxic Threat to the Finger Lakes,” WCNY Senior Producer Kevin Miller takes us beneath the waves into a world where the survival of one of our region’s most precious natural resources is being assaulted by a powerful force of nature.

“Bloom” is about the 11 Finger Lakes which have all experienced recent outbreaks of cyanobacteria—also known as toxic algae or harmful algal bloom. These blooms threaten drinking water, as well as a multi-billion-dollar tourism economy across Central New York.

In this film, Miller provides a primer on toxic algae. He digs into the causes of this terrifying scourge from Conesus Lake to Keuka Lake, Canandaigua to Otisco, and reports on what is occurring and what can be done to confront the spread.

“Bloom,” which debuts on WCNY on May 11 at 8 p.m., explores how residential housing, agricultural runoff, and management of roadside ditches, as well as climate change, rising water temperatures, and intense rainstorms contribute to this problem.

“Whether coming from the state, local entities, or residents of our beloved Finger Lakes, the heart of 'Bloom' keeps coming back to the notion that no matter how difficult, it is human nature to continue to seek solutions to this mounting dilemma,” Miller said when reflecting on the many months he spent researching, writing, filming, and editing this special report.

The project was catalyzed when WCNY Leadership Society member Jan Suwinski pointed out the work that the Finger Lakes Land Trust is doing to address this danger. Mr. Suwinski and his wife, Sue, live on a farm in Ithaca amid the lakes, and have dedicated time and attention to help with their preservation. We are grateful for him introducing us to Andy Zepp, Executive Director of the Land Trust, who also helped make this film possible.

The film looks at conservation efforts that the State of New York and the Land Trust are contributing to protect the lakes, while also exploring the studies aimed to help the lakes become more resilient. These studies are under way at institutions such as Hobart and William Smith Colleges, Cornell University, and SUNY’s College of Environmental Science and Forestry.

This report would not have been possible without the generosity of Jan and Sue Suwinski and the support of all our WCNY members. We are glad to be able to bring this coverage to our viewers. “Bloom” is in part a celebration of the wonders that surround us, and a reminder that we will need to be vigilant if they are going to last.

Sincerely,

Donkey Hodie’s Maze

Donkey is going to visit Grampy. Help her find her way through the maze to his house.

Designed specifically for middle school students (grades 6-8), Enterprise America provides educators with an exciting way to teach and introduce their students to the business world.

School administrators, teachers, and educators are encouraged to see how the investment in the program pays off. Transforming students’ understanding of how a community works, introducing them to a wide variety of career paths, and learning that making mistakes is invaluable. Perhaps most important is seeing students grasp the true relevance of education as they prepare for their futures.

LINER NOTES

Greetings from all of us at WCNY-FM! For the past several months, we’ve been encouraging you to LISTEN – LEARN – LOVE the amazing classical music we play every day. Our talented local hosts are all musicians and experts in their field, always sharing information and context to make your listening experience the best it can be.

We’ve also talked a lot about how listening to classical music can de-stress our lives. Numerous studies have made the connection between this great genre of music and numerous mental and physical health benefits, including fostering better social relationships, sounder sleep, pain reduction, memory improvement, and better productivity. A study by neurologist Dr. Michael Schneck of Loyola Medicine in Chicago found that classical music can even lower your blood pressure. So, as you tune to Classic FM to LISTEN – LEARN – LOVE… and RELAX, we asked each of our Classic Choices hosts to tell us about their favorite no-stress classical music piece of all time:

For me, it’s ‘Spiegel im Spiegel’ by Arvo Pärt. It’s deceptively simple—gentle arpeggios in the accompaniment, with the main instrument (usually a violin, but it has been played by a wide array of instruments) creating a deepening melodic mirror image, but always coming back home to rest.”

Rachmaninoff’s ‘Vocalise.’ Specifically, the recording featuring Anna Moffo with Leopold Stokowski conducting. It’s calm, quiet, wistful, and dreamy. And yet, I hear a hint of underlying mischief. It makes me smile.”

‘Song to the Moon’ from Dvořák’s opera Rusalka. In this aria, the water nymph Rusalka sings to the moon, asking where a love can be for her. It has beautiful, long melodic lines, and the orchestration sounds a lot like the moonlight on the water.”

For me, a piece of ‘no-stress’ classical music needs to be something that I can allow to fade into the background. One of the first that comes to mind is Tchaikovsky’s fourth symphony. It means a lot to me, because it was the first big symphony I performed in high school when I played the viola.”

When I want to completely relax and listen to classical music, I usually turn to early music from the renaissance period (Composers such as Josquin, DuFay, Ockeghem, or Orlando de Lassus). I usually select a piece with which I’m unfamiliar and hope it will become a new favorite. If I have to pick one, it’s ‘Missa L’homme armé’ by Josquin.”

Also on the radio front, Community FM, WCNY HD3 has added three more programs to its ever-expanding lineup. We are very pleased to welcome Talk CNY, a new podcast just launched by CenterState CEO highlighting the programs and initiatives contributing to the economic growth of our region. Also new to Community FM, the award-winning Zestful Aging, produced and hosted by Psychotherapist Nicole Christina, with guests and stories that re-frame aging as a time of great opportunity. Finally, WCNY’s own political expert David Lombardo brings us Dispatches from Planet Albany, a new podcast offering a smart and often funny insider look at the off-microphone conversations taking place each week in our State Capitol.

Social Media Specialist for WCNY and Industrial Jobs Explained

WCNY Promotes Advanced Manufacturing Careers in Central New York

WCNY is proud to be a recipient of the "American Graduate: Jobs Explained" grant. The two-year nationwide program will deploy public media's infrastructure to introduce young men and women to tools and resources that will help them discover and explore well-paying, in-demand and civic-minded career pathways.

Central New York and the Mohawk Valley are rapidly becoming a leader in high-tech manufacturing, anchored by the decision by Micron Technology, a top semiconductor company, to invest billions in a manufacturing campus in CNY. In addition, the success of companies like JMA Wireless in 5G infrastructure, Wolfspeed and Danfoss in silicon carbide fabrication, and Indium Corporation in supply chain management is also helping create jobs and to catalyze an economic renaissance in the region.

This economic renaissance will introduce sustainable and exciting careers in advanced manufacturing. The development of a local workforce is critical to ensure that the coming prosperity will belong to all of the region's residents.

WCNY’s goal with the “American Graduate: Jobs Explained” grant is to help develop a committed, qualified, and local workforce that will support this job growth. Five key approaches will be used to achieve this goal:

Produce one to two-minute videos for use on social media platforms, including Instagram Reels and TikTok, focusing on careers and pathways to advanced manufacturing jobs. Topics will include using CGI (3D computer graphics) to "go inside a microchip,” understanding the 5G communications industry, offering an inside look at integrated supply chain management, and introducing STEM skills needed in these roles.

Host events and tours for students to visit the facilities at companies such as Wolfspeed, Micron and JMA Wireless in order to get a behind-the-scenes look at operations and to see the real-world job opportunities.

Partner with the Milton J. Rubenstein Museum of Science & Technology (MOST) in Syracuse to create awareness around their virtual reality exhibit that lets individuals experience the chipmanufacturing process.

Collaborate with Central New York and Mohawk Valley school districts and corporate leaders to recruit students, particularly young women and youth from underserved communities, to attend programs such as Micron’s “Chip Camp, a STEM-based learning experience for middle and high school students that introduces them to semiconductor manufacturing and engineering skills.

Host workshops and career fairs in WCNY’s Enterprise America city, a 10,000-square-foot hands-on learning center, where students will engage in activities that teach the basics of building circuits, programming robots, and more.

Finally, WCNY has assembled two groups to help collaborate on this exciting new program. First is a Business Advisory Group, which includes local leaders. Second is a Youth Advisory Group comprising of local students. We are excited to part of this national program and to be working with the Corporation of Public Broadcasting and the American Graduate sponsoring station, WNET, to help prepare our youth for success in these

careers.

PARTNER SPOTLIGHT

Symphoria is proud to partner with WCNY. Classic FM is an obvious partner for us, but the relationship goes much deeper. In WCNY, we see a collaborator with shared values. In addition to enhancing the vibrancy of our community, both organizations are committed to serving all members of our region. WCNY does this through storytelling on TV and radio, and Symphoria does this through shared musical experiences. WCNY and Symphoria are both deeply dedicated to supporting educators and students, and we are proud to support the new Music Educator Award.

WCNY does a spectacular job of highlighting the wonderful things happening in CNY, with local programming like "Behind the Woman," "Reading Buddies," and "Artist Profiles." The incredible new programming on Community FM provides resources for listeners and helps instill a sense of pride in CNY—as a great place to live and work. WCNY helps tell Symphoria’s story, too, with regular interviews with Diane Jones. Our principal bass player, Spencer Phillips, is one of Classic FM’s newest hosts!

There are so many positive things about WCNY’s work in our community. We have such gratitude for their amazing leadership and fabulous team, working hard every day to tell CNY’s story.
