Opening a New Door to Addiction Treatment Addiction affects all, regardless of background, race, ethnicity, gender, religion or socio-economic status. In recent years, communities across our nation — including Central New York — have experienced alarming increases in the number of people needing addiction treatment services. As the longest running treatment program in the region, Crouse Health’s Addiction Treatment Services remains committed to our mission to expand access to care and ensure delivery of high-quality addiction and mental health treatment in our community. We are proud of our new facility that matches the caliber of our staff and provides a nurturing, safe and uplifting environment that is already greatly enhancing our focus on holistic patient care: The Bill & Sandra Pomeroy Treatment Center at Crouse Health. If you, a loved one, friend or colleague is in need of treatment for substance use disorder, please contact us at 315-470-8304 or visit crouse.org/addiction.

PRESIDENT'S LETTER

Amanda Hayden

In March, we asked for your input on a strategic plan for WCNY, and we were overwhelmed by the more than 500 responses to our survey.

Designers Ting Germain Alexis Cleveland

I’d like to share key aspects of the plan’s recommendations as we continue moving forward in a shifting technological, economic, audience, and workforce landscape. Your guidance has allowed us to better understand what it means to navigate within the contours of a fluid media ecosystem.

In short, we recognize that it is essential to evolve from what has traditionally been public broadcasting and public media to become a public communications organization, allowing WCNY to embrace ways to serve as a regional communications center. This does not mean that we will stop presenting great PBS television shows, nor will we make any changes to Classic FM, which we agree is among the best classical music radio stations in the country. Rather, it means that in addition to what you already expect, we will aim to build a community radio station, engage in two-way conversations on social media, host more virtual and in-person events, open a café with workforce development opportunities, relaunch our civics and financial literacy program, Enterprise America, and emphasize local coverage and local expertise to highlight the uniqueness of our region. The plan will enable us to deepen WCNY’s connection with veterans, youth, recent immigrants, underserved communities, local music followers, and the loyal members who so passionately support the station. It will allow our outstanding television producers to deliver great television and provide dynamic, cross-platform programming. Finally, it will ensure our underwriting, marketing, auction, and membership teams can react quickly to shifts in opportunities by monitoring a more rigorous and flexible set of financial models. In all, this plan shaped by our Strategic Planning Committee Chair Diane Gayeski, who recently served as Dean of the Park School of Communications at Ithaca College, will provide the direction we need to continue to improve education, create economic opportunity, and enhance the quality of life in Central New York.

Summer Full Moon (Supermoon)

Stargazing

July 13 The closest Supermoon of 2022 will occur this summer on Wednesday, July 13. A supermoon occurs when the moon reaches its perigee, which is the closest point in orbit to Earth. This makes it larger and brighter than the typical full moon. The predicted distance between the moon and the Earth on July 13 is 222,089 miles, which is 16,811 miles closer to Earth than normal!

Perseid Meteor Shower Aug. 11-13 The Perseid Meteor Shower will take place from July 14 to Aug. 24. It is considered to be one of the most popular meteor showers, so you don’t want to miss it! Be sure to plan ahead and figure out the best time and location to watch it. The shower is predicted to reach its peak on Aug. 13, which is when the largest number of meteors will be visible. This will be the most optimal day to catch a glimpse!

The Summer Triangle The Summer Triangle is an asterism, or group of stars, that is formed by three of the brightest stars: Vega, Deneb, and Altair. Vega sits at the top of the shape, followed by Deneb in the lower left, and Altair in the lower right. In the Northern Hemisphere, the triangle is most prominent during the summer. It appears in the east at nightfall, directly overhead after midnight, and then in the west at dawn. This asterism is unique. Its vast size allows it to contain parts of three different constellations, Lyra the Harp, Cygnus the Swan, and Aquila the Eagle. The Milky Way also passes through Vega and Altair. Once you’re able to locate the Summer Triangle, you’ll easily be able to find the Milky Way! Although the Summer Triangle indicates the arrival of summer, its placement also marks the beginning of autumn. Once the asterism is overhead at dusk and in the early evening, the seasons have changed, and it is time to make way for fall. Public Relations and Communications Intern

Cycle of Health

Following the completion of the U.S. Census, New York’s state and federal districts were supposed to be crafted this year by a bipartisan redistricting commission, but a partisan deadlock sent the entire process into chaos. On this episode of “CONNECT-NY,” we’ll explore how New York’s legislative boundaries were written, what the new districts mean for this fall’s election, and how this experience should inform future efforts of redistricting.

Host Dr. Rich O'Neill returns for the 14 season of “Cycle of Health,” with a fresh lineup of episodes. Learn more about programs in our area that are helping us stay active as we age, and dive into the cuttingedge technology behind surgical robotics. We'll also highlight a local baseball league for adults and children with disabilities, right here in our community. Tune in for all this and much more, starting Thursday, July 7 at 8:30 p.m. on WCNY-TV. th

After taking office following the resignation of Andrew Cuomo, Gov. Kathy Hochul pledged greater transparency and accountability in her administration. After a year on the job, has she delivered on this promise? We’ll try to answer that question as we evaluate how her administration is responding to records requests, engaging the media, and proactively disclosing information. We'll also examine changes to the state’s open meetings law, and the disclosure of police disciplinary records.

WCNY's Switch from Global Connect to WORLD In June, WCNY launched news, feature, and documentary programming from the PBS WORLD channel to enhance content previously distributed as Global Connect. The WORLD channel allows us to continue providing the shows you enjoyed on Global Connect, such as “Democracy Now!,” “Amanpour & Company,” and “PBS Newshour.” It also includes specifically curated content from our new partner. You can find the WORLD channel in the same places as Global Connect—over the air on 24.3, at 1276 on Spectrum, and 467 on Verizon Fios. WORLD is distributed by more than 100 stations nationwide. It provides powerful coverage connected to today’s headlines, scientific advances, historical revelations, and natural wonders. The channel also shares voices that too often go unheard. New TV programming coming up this year includes a view of the U.S. immigration system through the eyes of a Guatemalan teen, a tale of Chinatowns fighting to survive in Boston, Chicago, and Washington, D.C., and stories surrounding Native American heritage. From breaking news, such as all-day coverage of high-profile U.S. Congressional hearings, to in-depth exploration of critical issues, WORLD also helps bridge cultural divides. It offers programs from established, emerging, and diverse filmmakers, along with awardwinning original series. It also features specials that aim to bring audiences into the heart of their communities, which make up our diverse nation and interconnected planet. We are pleased to be able to bring this programming to you through WCNY.

Ray and Linda Straub

Modest beginnings laid the foundation for our lives. By working hard and being thoughtful with our spending, we have everything we need, while still maintaining a portion that is set aside for the Central New York community. As a professional advisor, I learned that there are three places your money can go: to taxes, people you care about and your community. That’s why Linda and I decided to support several community organizations through a designated fund, in addition to putting money aside for our heirs. It’s important to us to keep resources here to help charitable organizations continue their good work. We know that the Community Foundation is going to be here a lot longer than we are, and it feels good to know that what we’ve set up will continue under the professional guidance of the Community Foundation staff.

GIVING THOUGHTFULLY: RAY & LINDA STRAUB

Before & After School Care The JCC’s After School Program offers school-age children in grades K–6 a safe place to go for fun, educational and recreational activities. A variety of sports, enrichment classes, games, clubs, arts and crafts, homework, and more are available as well as sledding in winter and swimming in June! The JCC’s Before School care is a safe and comfortable place to go in the morning before the school day begins. We primarily serve Jamesville-DeWitt, Fayetteville-Manlius and the Syracuse Hebrew Day School.

Pack Your Car and Head to the 49th Bluegrass Ramble Picnic! Sunday, Aug. 7 | 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. | Dwyer Memorial Park in Little York

C

alling all Bluegrass fans and anyone who loves a good time during our Central New York summer! Mark your calendar for Bill Knowlton’s 49th Bluegrass Ramble Picnic, the longest-running bluegrass music festival in New York, Pennsylvania, and New England. It’s a time for people of all ages to enjoy a day filled with great bluegrass bands from far and wide, performing in a beautiful Cortland County lakeside setting.

A Note from Bill Knowlton

In 1973 listeners would often hear mentions of two Central New York Bluegrass communities, the “City Dwellers and College Attendees,” and the “Bluegrass Pickers,” while they listened to me on the air. I often touted their talents and amazing bluegrass sound. Because of this, I proposed we have a picnic somewhere to get together and “shake ‘n’ howdy,” and pick and sing, as our Southern musicians say.

This year WCNY Classic FM is proud to co-sponsor this great event, in honor of Bill Knowlton’s 50th year hosting Bluegrass Ramble on our station. Listen every Sunday night 9-Midnight, as Bill helps us explore and truly appreciate this uniquely American music genre. If you’ve never been to the Picnic, it is a community-friendly event that started in 1973, bringing the top bluegrass artists to one location for one special day each summer. Affectionately known as “Mr. Bluegrass,” Bill Knowlton emcees the event, and plays recorded performances from the Picnic on his Bluegrass Ramble shows.

We then needed a location to host our first Bluegrass Ramble Picnic. That venue came quickly when we found the perfect spot at the Hannibal VFW. From that year on, the “Up Country and Down City” Bluegrassers got together, forming life-long friendships, and even some new bluegrass and old-time bands. After bouncing around a series of sites and sponsors for a couple of years, we finally settled on Dwyer Memorial Park, home of the Cortland Repertory Theatre, in Little York, NY. Ever since that day, it has been the permanent home of the Bluegrass Ramble Picnic and we couldn’t be happier.

You can learn more about the history of bluegrass at www.ibma.org.

This year's picnic features: Host Band: The Delaney Brothers The Gospel Way Salmon River Boys Jo Davoli & Harvey Nussbaum Melanie & the Boys Joe LaMay & Sherri Reese The Cadleys

Every year, we have hosted the Bluegrass Ramble Picnic, making it the second oldest Bluegrass event in the Northeast, just after a Bluegrass event in Southern New Jersey.

Atkinson Family Band North Water Larry Hoyt & the Good Acoustics The Lonesome Road Ramblers Lake Effect And others!

The picnic always occurs on the first Sunday in August. We start early at 10 a.m. with some gospel singing, and then we have bands every half hour, until just before 7 p.m. Every band that attends donates their musical services free of charge. While attending the picnic, you can find many of the band’s tables set up selling their CDs and bluegrass souvenirs. While you get your merchandise, you will also be soothed by the non-stop jam sessions that pop up throughout the park. Also, don’t forget to grab some tasty food from one of the many food vendors. Attendees should also bring their lawn chairs to sit and relax while taking in the music. In the event that unwelcome rain arrives, there will be a large tent to keep everyone nice and dry. Admission to the picnic is always free. Picnic expenses are paid for by 50/50 raffles, t-shirt sales, and donations from the crowd.

Knowlton hosted the first all-bluegrass radio show in New York City in 1960. In 1997, he was named “Broadcast Personality of the Year” by the International Bluegrass Music Association. He emcees at least 13 bluegrass festivals every year and writes liner notes for bluegrass and old-time country music artists.

Further information is available at wcny.org, or by calling 315-457-6100.

For newcomers, Bill suggests the following:

1. Bring a chair, blanket, and your favorite snacks 2. Plan to arrive early if you want front row seats! 3. There will be food & beverage vendors, so be sure to bring cash! 4. Bring a camera to capture the day 5. Fun for everyone, from 1 to 100+!

Meet the Host

OF WCNY’S THE CAPITOL PRESSROOM AND CONNECT NY By David Lombardo Host of The Capitol Pressroom and CONNECT NY

W

hen my mom watches me on television, whether I'm hosting a panel discussion, moderating a debate, or serving as a talking head, she will often remark on the smile that I flash on screen. A smile that portrays just how much fun I’m having. It’s that same smile (with teeth that I don’t like to bare for posed pictures) that’s also on my face while conducting interviews as host of WCNY’s “The Capitol Pressroom,” a daily radio program covering state government.

In the ensuing years, whether as a newspaper reporter or as a radio host, I’ve tried to capture the significance of life at the Capitol. I’ve learned to not shy away from the seedy political underbelly, colorful characters, and human interests that drive our state’s policies.

I just can’t help how happy it makes me to talk about politics and government. That’s why I feel so lucky to have been entrusted back in 2019 with the reins of “The Capitol Pressroom,” and given a chance to become the face of “CONNECT NY” earlier this year. For me, these are opportunities to satiate my natural curiosity. For the viewers and listeners this means these platforms will be a space for probing questions (and follow ups) that try to illuminate the intersection of government, and the lives of New Yorkers.

My goal is to instill that same spirit into “CONNECT NY," as we provide monthly coverage of broad topics through the lens of state government and New York politics. We’re going to have in-depth panel discussions with thoughtful legislators and stakeholders. We will also bring you one-on-one interviews with important decision makers, including members of the governor’s cabinet.

I feel so lucky to have been entrusted

back in 2019 with the reins of “The

At this point in my life, with everything that’s constantly happening in New York, I can’t imagine anything more fun than striving to deliver on that vision for “The Capitol Pressroom” and “CONNECT NY.” I hope you’ll be watching and listening along with me, so we can smile together, and all that important stuff about being informed too.

Capitol Pressroom,” and given a chance

to become the face of “CONNECT NY” earlier this year.

It’s all meaty substance, but if I’m being honest about why it’s fun for me, and why I have the energy to do about 20 interviews a week, it’s because of the political and personal drama, which New York is full of. My addiction to this recurring, real-life soap opera began in 2009 when I was an intern for the student-run Legislative Gazette. I had a front row seat to the debacle that was known as the “Senate Coup,” a political stalemate that was dominated by a cast of misfit politicians and surreal moments. State politics are still recovering from the experience, which was intriguing for me as a recent political science major from SUNY Geneseo.

It's the intersection with state government that is most meaningful to me, because it’s traditionally overshadowed by the political intrigue in Washington D.C., or the latest drama in our local governments. Both institutions are tremendously important, but it’s been my experience over the last 13 years that the state Capitol is where the rubber hits the road. It was policymakers in Albany who legalized samesex marriage, banned fracking in New York, overhauled the gambling landscape, green lit the Mario M. Cuomo bridge (that you might still call the Tappan Zee), approved the sale of recreational marijuana, curtailed the use of cash bail, set pandemic restrictions, and raised the minimum wage.

A

Regardless of whether you love these decisions or hate them, they have dramatically influenced life in the Empire State. Each weekday on “The Capitol Pressroom,” we dive into the weeds of these decisions, conducting in-depth interviews with state lawmakers, executive agency officials, activists, and my fellow reporters embedded in the Capitol. The goal is to understand the decisions being made, ideas being debated, and plans being formulated for the future.

FUN FACTS ABOUT

David Lombardo Host of WCNY’s The Capitol Pressroom and CONNECT NY

1

I repeatedly wore a child’s extra-large Batman costume (that I bought my senior year of high school) while running in the Saratoga Turkey Trot.

2

My Twitter profile name, @Poozer87, was inspired by an insult hurled in one of the Cruel Intentions sequels (yes, there are sequels).

3

I once made a very short cookbook for my close friends and family as a Christmas present. It included a Q&A with my butcher and a risqué cover.

4

I started scooping ice cream for the Saratoga Springs Ben & Jerry’s when I was 14, and worked there on and off for a decade.

5

During my senior year of college, I completed the Krispy Kreme challenge in North Carolina. I ran two miles, ate 12 doughnuts, and then ran two more miles.

6

I can make a very loud popping noise with my tongue, which came in handy when I was younger and got separated from my parents. Now, it’s just obnoxious.

7

I have a lisp that materializes with certain words or when I’m excited, so my career choice was an interesting one.

Directions

1) Find some trees! Take some blank paper, masking tape (optional), and crayons outside. Find trees with different types of bark and leaves. 2) Use tape or manually hold a piece of paper on the trunk of a tree. Lightly rub a crayon horizontally over the surface of the paper on the bark, just hard enough so that the bark’s texture shows. 3) Collect some leaves from different trees. Put a leaf on a piece of cardboard or a clipboard, cover it with paper, and rub the crayon over it. 4) Compare your crayon rubbings! Which bark is the roughest? Which leaf is the biggest? See if you can match the leaf rubbings to the actual leaves!
