In September, we will launch Syracuse’s first 24/7/365 Spanish radio station.
Pulso Central will air across Central New York, the Mohawk Valley, and Northern New York on the HD-2 channels of WCNY (91.3 Syracuse), WUNY (89.5 Utica), and WJNY (90.9 Watertown).
The station will also stream at PulsoCentral.com, making it available to anyone anywhere, especially the growing Spanish-speaking population in our region. Currently, there are approximately 1,200 Spanish radio stations in the United States and about 100 in New York State. Thanks to an extraordinary group of community leaders, Syracuse and its neighboring cities, suburbs, and rural areas will now join that distribution.
This has been a passion project for dozens of people from organizations including La Casita, La Liga, the Mohawk Valley Latino Association, Syracuse University, SUNY Oswego, and Le Moyne College, who participated in a task force that met regularly over the past year. The group was chaired by La Casita’s Tere Paniagua and WCNY’s Ron Lombard, and coordinated by former Univision executive Jose Zamora, with guidance from Rita Paniagua, Elisa Morales, Francisco Suárez, Sonia Martinez, Hugo Acosta, Jesus Rolon, Eddie Martinez, Sandy Siquier, Gerardo Cummings, Fanny Villarreal, Ana Diaz-Diez, Javier Maymí-Pérez, Elizabeth Juarez, Emma Ticio, Bea Gonzalez, and many others (there are truly too many task force participants to thank in this short letter). Each brought insight to areas including programming, funding, production, and marketing needed to bring this media service to life.
Of course, Pulso Central starts with the music! We are thrilled that Renzo Quesada (DJ Lorenz) is facilitating the soundtrack. Renzo, originally from Lima, Peru, has lived in Central New York for more than 15 years. His day job is at the Food Bank, but his heart and soul are in the sounds that reverberate across the full range of Latin music genres.
The station will feature local programs about arts, culture, sports, and entertainment, as well as provide information on public services, immigration, family, faith, workforce development and other topics of interest. Brought to you by local hosts, these shows will complement national and international shows provided by Radio Bilingüe and other partner stations.
In addition to streaming on PulsoCentral.com, the station will be available on the Pulso Central app in your favorite app store, on smart speakers, and on TuneIn radio. The locally produced shows will be on-demand at wcny.org/pulsocentral and on your favorite podcasting service.
We are grateful for all your support that makes community-focused initiatives such as this one possible. Muchas gracias.

This month’s CONNECT Magazine cover story is about the upcoming launch of Pulso Central, the region’s first and only Spanish-language radio station. We could not be more excited to tell you about this great initiative we’ve been developing for most of the past year. Earlier in this issue, WCNY President and CEO Mitch Gelman talked about the genesis of the idea and why this is so important to our community. I can fill you in on what we’ve been doing to make Pulso Central a reality.
We first enlisted the help of a dynamic group of leaders from throughout Central New York’s Latino community. We have met regularly, and they have helped guide the project by advising us on the kind of audio content that will work best here to appeal to the greatest number of individuals of all ages and backgrounds. The first thing we decided was that a wide variety of Latino music would form the base programming for the station. We were fortunate to find a talented local Latino DJ with a broad catalog of music. Renzo Quesada, known professionally as DJ Lorenz, joined our volunteer team and has been busy producing hours of music of all genres: salsa, cumbia, reggaeton, bolero, Latin pop… you name it! “The Music of DJ Lorenz” will air several hours a day, seven days a week.
We also wanted to integrate programming provided by the nation’s only Spanishlanguage public radio network, the California-based Radio Bilingue. They produce some wonderful music shows, along with news, talk, and informational content. That programming will air live at various times in the morning, evening, overnight, and on weekends.
Nominate a music educator today at wcny.org/musiceducator.
The third major component for Pulso Central is original local Spanish-language programming. We initially expect to have as many as 6-8 monthly or bi-weekly programs in the mix, ranging from informational and public affairs content to local interest and entertainment shows. Those will air in the early evening hours on weekdays, and we expect to expand the local content hours as new programs come into the mix in the months ahead.
When it launches in mid-September, Pulso Central will be heard over the air on WCNY HD-2 in Syracuse, WUNY HD-2 in Utica, and WJNY HD-2 in Watertown. No HD radio receiver? No problem! Pulso Central will also be streamed live at wcny.org and pulsocentral.com. We will also make it available on live radio apps and Alexa devices.
With the addition of Pulso Central, WCNY will offer its listeners four separate radio stations, including Classic FM, Community FM, and Oldies HD. None of that is possible without your generous ongoing support, and we truly appreciate it! Stay tuned for more about the progress of Pulso Central in upcoming editions of CONNECT Magazine!
Ron Lombard FM Station Director
Join us for the Canine Jamboree on Saturday, Sept. 21 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Jamesville Beach Dog Park! Over 30 local shelters will be showcasing animals in need of loving homes. Be sure to catch the Classic FM hosts as they join in the adoptable pet parade.
The creation of Pulso Central marks a thrilling and significant breakthrough for the growing Spanish-speaking community of Central New York. As the first Spanishlanguage radio station in the region, Pulso Central is poised to become a vital resource, reflecting the vibrant mix of Hispanic and Latino cultures and effectively engaging these populations like no other local or regional medium does. This initiative brings the promise of representation, ensuring that the voices, stories, and experiences of these communities are heard and valued. The excitement surrounding Pulso Central lies in its potential to bridge a significant gap in regional and local media content, celebrate the cultural vibrancy of our communities, and foster a sense of belonging.
Pulso Central also has the potential to become a powerful catalyst for economic development. By promoting Hispanic and Latino businesses, artists, festivals, and events, the station can help boost the regional economy, draw businesses and visitors to the area, and enhance its appeal as a destination.
As a new channel, Pulso Central can be a transformative force within our media landscape by creating jobs, fostering a network of media professionals and creatives, nurturing talent, and encouraging innovation within the industry.
The launch of Pulso Central represents a bold step towards a more connected, informed, and culturally enriched region, making it an exciting and important development for all who live here.

Community-oriented programming, produced for and by Central New Yorkers.
the One LIVE! Ciao!
Jody Manning came to us with the idea for “Innovate to Educate,” his monthly show on Community FM designed to highlight unique, breakthrough educational programs being utilized in Central New York schools. He’s now produced and hosted nearly two dozen shows.
Jody is a seasoned school leader with more than 30 years of experience. He’s served in various capacities, including as a district superintendent. He is currently the Executive Director for the Syracuse City School District’s STEAM School, expected to open in 2025. Jody was also a long-time member of the WCNY Board of Trustees.
We appreciate his great expertise and his willingness to volunteer his time as a host for Community FM.

Say what you want about Facebook—and I do—but I find so many interesting “Zestful Aging Podcast” guests there. Case in point: Liezel Graham, an indie writer, poet and textile artist from Glasgow, Scotland. Her latest book, “The Velveting Bones: Poems,” is a gorgeous and vulnerable collection of poems. The main theme in her writing is that, despite a world plagued by pain and tragedy, beauty can always be found if you look for it.
Liezel is quite familiar with emotional challenges; her young son has chronic medical conditions, and her caregiving interferes with her ability to sleep through the night. She was raised in a house with domestic violence and endured intense bullying as a child. Her response? “Beauty is the antidote,” she says in her South African accent, the country where she was raised. She looks for it everywhere: moss, the steam from her cup of tea, and the designs she sees when she cuts open a cabbage.
Liezel uses her writing to support her mental health. She recommends this practice because it’s an accessible, effective tool for processing tough memories. In addition to writing poetry and producing meditations, she describes herself as an “intuitive stitcher.” Using vintage aprons and christening gowns destined for the landfill, she stitches words or phrases into the fabric to process some of her painful feelings. This simple embroidery is not for decoration; instead, her textile art takes what lives inside and puts it on the outside, she explains.
In her poetic way, Liezel describes her work as “lifting the rocks up,” which she does both literally and metaphorically. Find out more about Liezel and her pursuit of beauty at LiezelGraham.com.

National Estate Planning Awareness Week (NEPAW) takes place during the third full week of October each year. Established by the House of Representatives in 2008, NEPAW aims to educate the public about estate planning and highlight its importance as a vital component of financial wellness.
Estate planning is a crucial process that is often overlooked or postponed, leaving families and loved ones vulnerable to unnecessary financial burdens and legal disputes. As part of National Estate Planning Awareness Week, WCNY is dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of creating a comprehensive estate plan that reflects individual goals and values.
National Estate Planning Awareness Week is the perfect time to start thinking about your own plans. By engaging in thoughtful estate planning, individuals have the opportunity to protect their assets, ensure their wishes are honored, and provide financial security for their loved ones.
The goal of National Estate Planning Awareness Week is to empower individuals with the knowledge and tools they need to make informed decisions about their legacy. We believe that everyone deserves the peace of mind that comes with a comprehensive estate plan.
To learn more about National Estate Planning Awareness Week or to notify WCNY of your intentions, contact Katherine Keeney at katherine.keeney@wcny. org or call 315.551.6838. You can also visit wcny.org/ support-wcny/other-ways-to-give for additional details.
The process is simple, but your support lives well into the future.
