In the September-October issue of CONNECT magazine, we were happy to give you a brief introduction to our newest radio venture, Community FM. All of us on the radio side of WCNY are thrilled that this edition of CONNECT magazine features even more details on this exciting project. Community FM started with a simple idea our CEO Mitch Gelman had about a year ago: can we serve our community as public broadcasters even better, by creating a new radio station featuring local people and local perspectives? We started by deciding that our HD-3 station, at the time playing 24-hour jazz programming, would be the best place to begin the experiment. Last winter, we added an hour or two a day of local programming; Syracuse University’s Thursday Morning Roundtable, plus the audio portion of WCNY-TV’s local productions, like Ivory Tower, Cycle of Health, CONNECT NY, and Behind the Woman. The station continued to develop through the spring, as we added The Capitol Pressroom, the daily political radio show anchored from Albany by WCNY’s David Lombardo. We also added a one-hour compilation of the Emmynominated WCNY-TV series SPD: Reckoning and Reform
By summer, we began to develop and produce original local programming. The first of these shows was produced in partnership with Central New York’s new non-profit news organization, CentralCurrent.org. Central Current Radio takes a bi-weekly look at the state of local journalism and issues of importance to our community. It’s hosted by Central Current Board Member and retired Newhouse School Professor Rick Wright and features Central Current Editor-in-Chief Julie McMahon, with a variety of guests.
Our New Neighbors tells the compelling first-person stories of refugees and immigrants who have settled in our region. That program is now being hosted by Ibrahim Mohamed of Catholic Charities’ Northside CYO, himself a refugee from Somalia. Built to Serve shines a spotlight on the critical work being done throughout our community by non-profit organizations. Every month, local physician Dr. Rich Kopecky offers thought-provoking findings from worldwide science journals in his show, Science Today Syracuse Stage’s Melissa Crespo hosts a monthly inside look at the local theater scene in Syracuse (On)Stage. In October, we launched Innovate to Educate, a monthly program hosted by well-known local educator Jody Manning, focusing on new, positive, and ground-breaking educational programs being utilized in our local schools. October also saw the addition of two weekly hours of programming geared toward our ever-growing Hispanic population, produced in partnership with Hugo Acosta of CNY Latino.
We have also begun to tap into the great work being done by local and regional podcasters. SUNY Oswego Professor Francisco Suarez hosts From Suarez’s Basement, featuring nationally-known entertainment figures from both TV and film. Shadow // Yaddo is the podcast produced by the renowned Yaddo artists’ retreat in Saratoga Springs. And Community FM is happy to be the home of a brand-new podcast for tweens, produced in Syracuse, called Funky Foodies. That’s part of an hour of children’s programming on the station every Saturday morning at 10, which also includes Check It Out, a new podcast for kids from WCNY and Onondaga County Public Libraries; and Reading Buddies, another Emmy-nominated program, co-produced by WCNY and the Reading League.
We are thrilled with the tremendous community support that has helped us quickly grow Community FM from a few shows airing a couple of hours a day, to a weekly schedule featuring more than 20 different shows airing over 5-6 hours each day! And this is just the beginning. Stay tuned as we continue to expand our programming, and our program day. Check out the Community FM page, www.wcny.org/communityfm/, where you can find a continually-updated program schedule, plus links to listen to all of our shows on demand. And as always, thanks very much for your support of WCNY!

My parents instilled in me from a young age that working hard, having good values, showing empathy and caring about others was what’s important. I am grateful to have had the opportunities I did growing up and feel a responsibility to give back to help anyone who didn’t have the same.
I set up a donor-advised fund at the Community Foundation to facilitate my giving and contribute to our community’s greater good. I believe that by helping to provide career pathways for young adults, we can work towards breaking the cycle of generational poverty early on. Everyone deserves the chance to be successful, no matter the circumstance they’re born into.
My wife, Heta, and I believe that if you make small acts of kindness a part of your day to day life, then it will be built into who you become. We have taught our children that giving should encompass all forms—gifts of time, talent and treasure. Our fund serves as a way to engage them in philanthropy and the decision-making process of where our money goes and where we volunteer our time.
