PRESIDENT'S LETTER WCNY

Central New York is rapidly becoming a leader in high-tech manufacturing.

Following the announcement that Micron Technology—one of the world's largest semiconductor companies—is investing in a manufacturing campus here in Central New York, President Joe Biden said, “The region is poised to lead the world in advanced manufacturing.”

Our area has clean water, low-cost housing, outdoor recreation, and space on which to build the chip fabrication “clean rooms” and related facilities. Micron intends to create thousands of jobs, adding to those established by JMA Wireless’ 5G infrastructure and Wolfspeed’s silicon carbide fabrication. These will complement jobs at other companies that are planning to move here and contribute to the evolving supply chains.

Despite the tremendous promise, there remains an undeniable question: Where will the workforce come from?

"We want to hire locally," Micron's Senior Vice President for Frontend Manufacturing said in a recent conversation with WCNY.

WCNY is ready to assist. We’ve been selected as one of ten public media stations to receive the American Graduate: Jobs Explained grant. The station will collaborate with manufacturers and local schools to create a series of TikTok features and related activities/events to educate middle and high school students about the opportunities ahead and the skills needed to achieve them.

Recently, Micron signed a far-reaching community investment contract to build out the workforce development infrastructure needed to “cultivate the next generation of talent” in the advanced manufacturing industry. Given that WCNY has enjoyed longstanding partnerships with leading workforce development, economic advancement, and civic and cultural organizations, as well as private sector companies across our region, we are pleased to help prepare our youth for these new careers.

Using the technology and storytelling skills that you generously support, WCNY is excited to play a role in this historic opportunity—and to engage a new audience in the process.

Sincerely,

Spring into Gardening!

If you’ve always wanted to learn how to plant your own garden, now is the perfect time to do so! With Earth Day coming up on April 22, a great way to celebrate is by beginning to plan your garden. Whether you want to plant flowers or you’re looking to grow your own ingredients, this step-by-step guide will help you make the garden of your dreams.

STEP 1

PICK YOUR LOCATION

Before you plant your garden, make sure you find a spot that has enough exposure to sunlight, plenty of space for the plants to grow, and the right kind of soil for the plants you are planning to grow. Different plants require different types of soil, so you’ll want to check the consistency and pH. Visit your local garden center for help preparing your soil.

PLAN YOUR GARDEN

Once you have determined the conditions of your garden’s location, you’ll want to research which types of plants will thrive in the environment. Find plants whose preferred growing conditions closely match the location you’re able to provide. You may also want to consider your level of expertise, and grow plants that are suitable for your experience.

STEP 2

DECIDE YOUR PLANTING DATES

STEP 3

Since different plants should be grown at different times of the year, you’ll want to create a gardening schedule. After you've compiled a list of plants that you’re interested in growing, look at the back of each seed packet to plan out the planting dates.

PLANT YOUR SEEDS

Now that you've decided on where your garden will be located and what you want to grow, it’s time to plant your seeds! Follow the instructions on the back of the seed packets to ensure you're planting them correctly!

DID YOU

KNOW?

The color of hydrangeas depends on the pH level of the soil.

STEP 4

6

STEP 5

TEND TO YOUR GARDEN

Make sure you keep up with caring for your garden, and continue to check on the plants to ensure the conditions are adequate for growing. Remember to water whenever necessary, and weed the garden as often as possible.

PICK YOUR CROPS

If you've decided to plant something edible or you’d like to create a flower bouquet, keep an eye on your garden. Pick the crops when they reach your preferred size.

STEP 6

If you’d like to add some flair to your garden, check out the garden decorations at your local garden center! Adding a fence to your garden will not only make it look nice, it’ll keep pests out too! You can also scatter a few painted rocks around the garden to give it a pop of color. However you decide to decorate your garden, be creative and have fun!

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR CLASSIC FM MUSIC EDUCATOR AWARD HONOREES!

LINER NOTES

Greetings from all your friends at WCNY-FM! We have exciting things to share as we are now into our 51st year on the air throughout our region. March is Women’s History Month, and there’s no better time to check out a wonderful weekly program produced and hosted by our own Diane Jones. Feminine Fusion airs every Sunday afternoon at 2:00 on Classic FM. Every week Diane, herself an accomplished musician and composer, highlights the incredible contributions of women to centuries of classical music. For Women’s History Month, each Feminine Fusion focuses on women creating music (either through compositions or performances) all over the world. Diane will take us on a virtual journey around the globe… north, south, east, and west. She’ll highlight music from Canada and the Scandinavian region (North); Africa, Brazil and Antarctica (South); Asia and the Middle East (East); and the US and Europe (West). By the way, we are proud that Feminine Fusion is nationally-distributed. More than 20 radio stations across the country, from Alaska to Puerto Rico, now air Diane’s weekly show.

Classic FM is also very pleased that our new Music Educator Award program has been so well-received throughout our listening area. We’ve received dozens of nominations since last summer and have presented the award to a deserving music teacher each month since September. Among our honorees to date: Maggie Dougherty of Cazenovia Central Schools, Shawn Hebert of Fayetteville-Manlius, Karen Seamans of Cicero-North Syracuse, Maggie Mercer of West Genesee, and Kevin Upcraft of Mexico Central. Go to www.wcny.org/radio/musiceducator to watch a video tribute to each honoree, and to submit your nomination for a deserving teacher of your choice! The Classic FM Music Educator Award is presented by Symphoria and Syracuse Friends of Chamber Music, with support from The Cheswatyr Foundation.

Finally this month, an update on our newest radio station, Community FM, WCNY HD-3. We’ve been telling you about the development of this station featuring Local People - Local Perspectives. Now, we are happy to tell you about two new original local programs that have joined the Community FM lineup in the past few months. CNY Heroes is hosted by retired NewsChannel 9 anchor Dan Cummings and is a monthly show for and about our local veterans. Checkup from the Neck-Up is also a monthly half-hour show, hosted by Cycle of Health’s Dr. Richard O’Neill offering great perspectives and advice for our good health. And we are pleased to now offer two more outstanding regional podcasts on Community FM: North Words from our friends at North Country Public Radio; and This Is Ithaca, featuring audio “portraits” of interesting people who call that Finger Lakes community their home. Also, starting with this edition of CONNECT Magazine, we will publish a Community FM Program Schedule. Please note, the schedule will change as we continue to add more and more local programming, but the one you see in this edition will give you an idea of when you can listen to our programming. For the most up-to-date schedule, a live stream, and to listen to any of our shows on demand, go to www.wcny.org/communityfm.

As always, we truly appreciate your listening, and your continued support for our WCNY radio stations!

Did you know? “Ciao Italia,” which first aired in 1989, is the longest-running television cooking show in the nation!

Torta Margherita by Mary Ann Esposito

INGREDIENTS

• 2/3 cup cornstarch

• 1/4 tsp baking powder

• 4 large eggs separated, at room temperature

• 1/2 cup plus 2 tbs vanilla sugar or granular sugar

• 1 tbs grated lemon zest

• 1 tbs fresh lemon juice

• 1 tsp salt

• Confectioners’ sugar for sprinkling

DIRECTIONS (SERVES 8)

1. Preheat the oven to 350ºF. Butter an 8 by 2 1/2-inch springform tube pan or two 9-inch round cake pans. Sift the cornstarch and baking powder together onto wax paper.

2. In a large bowl, using an electric mixer, beat the egg yolks until pale in color. Slowly beat in the sugar. Beat in the vanilla, lemon zest, and juice. Fold in the cornstarch mixture.

3. In a clean bowl, with clean beaters, beat the egg whites with the salt until stiff but not dry. With a rubber spatula, fold the whites into the egg yolk mixture a little at a time, taking care not to deflate the whites. Spread the batter evenly in the pan(s).

4. Bake for 20 minutes, or until the top is golden brown. Remove the cake(s) from the oven. If using a tube pan, invert the pan over a long-necked funnel and cool before removing from the pan. If using cake pans, let the cakes cool for 10 min., then run a knife around the edges and carefully turn the cakes out onto a cooling rack. Cool completely before serving.

PARTNER SPOTLIGHT

Girl Scouts is the preeminent leadership development organization for girls. Our story began in 1912 when our Movement was founded by Juliette Gordon Low. Today we continue to offer every girl the chance to practice a lifetime of leadership, adventure, and success.

Through the national realignment of councils, Girl Scouts of NYPENN Pathways (GSNYPENN) was chartered in 2009 by Girl Scouts of the USA to administer the Girl Scout Leadership Experience across the local area. Our legacy lies in the rich history of five former councils: Central New York, Foothills, Indian Hills, Seven Lakes, and Thousand Islands.

We serve girls in grades K-12 in Allegany, Broome, Cayuga, Chemung, Chenango, Cortland, Delaware, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, Ontario, Oswego, Otsego, St. Lawrence, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Tioga, Tompkins, Wayne, and Yates counties in New York, and Bradford and Tioga counties in Pennsylvania.

Girl Scouts work together to build a better world. Girls of all backgrounds and abilities are unapologetically themselves as they discover their strengths and rise to meet new challenges. Backed by trusted adult volunteers, mentors, and millions of alums, Girl Scouts lead the way as they find their voices and make changes that affect the issues most important to them.

We are proud to support WCNY and its mission to connect with the curious of all ages. Learn more about our mission of building girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place at gsnypenn.org.
