Single-Port Robotic Surgery: EXPERIENCE MATTERS

As the region’s leader in robotic-assisted surgery Crouse Health is the only area hospital to offer the latest, minimally invasive technique for prostate surgery using a single, small incision. The da Vinci SP system uses advanced technology designed for access to tissue in the body with greater precision and enhanced mobility.

A pioneer in robotic-assisted surgery, urologist Po Lam, MD, is the first and only surgeon in the region to utilize the da Vinci Single Port robotic system for prostate removal. His experience with the SP system places him in the top tier* of robotic surgeons in the U.S. using this innovative technology.

President's Letter

As we start a new year, WCNY remains committed to aligning our coverage and service goals with the needs of the communities we serve.

We are pleased to have received a second grant from New York’s Empire State Development Corporation to continue the training of television, film, and production professionals to meet the demand for crew in our region. In the first phase of the program, we have been able to partner with I.A.T.S.E. Local 52 to graduate a diverse group of more than 50 men and women ready to take on these roles in a growing industry.

Our focus on inclusive sports continues, as well, with plans to build on the success of the “Syracuse Challenger Baseball Game of the Week” by providing more stories from New York State Special Olympics competitions and to work with WNED, the PBS station in Buffalo, to deliver more wheelchair football and other adaptive sports tournaments to our air.

We are excited to bring you—and 45 PBS stations in markets from San Bernadino to St. Louis—a second season of “Spatchcock Funk.” Host Matt Read and producer Alex DeRosa remain as outrageous as ever as they kick into gear the best ways to throw parties at ballgames, at the pool, in front of bosses and behind masks. Stay tuned for more Dope Food, Strong Drinks and Great Stories, and little bit of positivity on the side.

WCNY is working hard to see if bipartisan governance can make a comeback. That is why we ran a pilot series recently to develop “Balancing Act with John Katko.” The show, hosted by a former Central New York congressional leader with solid credentials for crossing the aisle to get things done in Washington D.C., aims to facilitate discussion, poke some fun at partisan politics, and make compromise cool again. We are now looking for more distribution and funding to consider whether there is an audience for a show that speaks to the center. We hope to learn whether there is an appetite among viewers for a show that seeks, as John F. Kennedy once said, not the Republican answer or the Democratic answer, but the right answer to challenges faced by people across the country.

Other upcoming efforts this year will highlight solution-oriented approaches to homelessness by digging into its root causes, a reflection on the Haudenosaunee Confederacy's contributions to the shaping of the United States Constitution aligned with Ken Burns' upcoming six-part, twelve-hour documentary series on the American Revolution, a look back at the 200 th Anniversary of Lafayette's Tour across upstate New York, and a visit along the Finger Lakes Film Trail where pioneers set the movie industry in motion.

We will also have new screenings and events coming up. So, keep an eye out for all the exciting things that your contributions and support for WCNY make possible.

Thank you, and Happy New Year!

Tips for Staying Healthy this Winter

You may have the best intentions when you create your health-based New Year’s resolutions, but when it starts to get cold outside, it can be difficult to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Here are some helpful tips to keep you motivated and moving toward your goals!

Did You Know?

Only about 9% of people successfully keep their New Year’s resolutions for the entire year. However, setting specific, realistic goals and tracking your progress can significantly boost your chances of success.

Eating Healthy

Discover New Recipes

Cooking the same meals each week can get tiresome—why not explore new cuisines this year? PBS offers numerous series and articles with fresh recipe ideas. Tune in to WCNY-TV and visit the PBS Food website to discover new favorites! Shows like “Sara’s Weeknight Meals” and “Fit to Eat” will introduce you to new healthy recipes that are easy to add to your daily routine.

Get Ahead with Meal Prep

For a busy week ahead, set aside some time over the weekend to plan and prep your meals. While it may feel tedious at first, writing down a list of your meals for the week can help you save time in the long run. Once you know what you’ll be making, preparing your meals and ingredients ensures the cooking process will be efficient.

Learn Quick-Fix Meals

When life gets hectic and time slips away, it’s easy to grab a quick snack and rush off to your next commitment. However, you shouldn’t sacrifice your health for convenience. Instead, explore this collection of favorite quick dinners and make-ahead meals from PBS Food to ensure you stay nourished even on your busiest days!

Exercise Routines

Exercise Outdoors

Ready for a winter adventure? Brave the cold and enjoy some invigorating snowy activities! On sunny days, bundle up and get some fresh air—head to a local ski resort to zip down the slopes, explore scenic trails while snowshoeing, or hit the rink for some ice skating.

Practice Yoga

Looking for a slower, mindful approach? WCNY offers a range of yoga programs that guide you through exercises to enhance posture, breathing, and overall wellness! Tune in to series like “Yoga in Practice,” “Yndi Yoga,” “Happy Yoga with Sarah Starr,” and more when they air on WCNY-TV.

Work Out at Home

No need to hit the gym to stay active! Plenty of exercises can be done right at home with no equipment. If you’re up for a challenge, try incorporating a resistance band or some light weights. And for gentle, accessible exercise, check out WCNY’s “Sit and Be Fit” program, offering easy chair exercises you can do from the comfort of home.

Intellectual Well-Being

Attend Classes

It's never too late to start learning! Is there something you've always wanted to explore, but never had the chance? Winter is the perfect season to dive into something new! While spending more time indoors, consider dedicating a few hours to online classes. From language learning and creative writing to music lessons and beyond, the possibilities are endless.

Do Puzzles

Stimulate your mind while completing puzzles! There is always a wide array to choose from, including jigsaws, crosswords, sudokus, and word searches. These enjoyable activities not only pass the time but can also boost cognitive function and enhance short-term memory.

Read Books

Expand your horizons indoors this winter! Dive into books, magazines, and articles to explore new topics and boost your learning. Whether online or from your local library, these resources can open up worlds of knowledge and keep your mind active all winter long!

Mental Health

Prioritize Self-Care

Dedicate some time just for yourself by engaging in activities that make you feel relaxed and refreshed. Whether it’s reading, journaling, watching movies, connecting with friends, or treating yourself to a spa day, doing what you love can greatly improve your mental health and overall well-being. Remember, a self-care day is all about you!

Stay Busy

With shorter days and colder weather, it’s easy to fall into a rut. Even if motivation is low, staying productive can boost your mood! Try planning your days in advance to keep yourself engaged and mentally stimulated. Be sure to schedule downtime as well, allowing moments for relaxation and activities you enjoy.

Take Time to Meditate

The start of a new year often brings a focus on resolutions and productivity, but it’s equally important to give your mind a break to avoid burnout. Taking a few moments to meditate and clear your mind can boost your mood and leave you feeling refreshed, revitalized, and ready to tackle new challenges!

Liner Notes

It’s truly been my pleasure to manage the wonderful professionals at WCNY’s radio stations over the past three-plus years. After a nearly 40-year career in local TV and radio news, I was honored in October of 2021 when CEO Mitch Gelman gave me the opportunity to come out of retirement to join the WCNY team. As I again enter full retirement, I’m pleased to reflect on the many important initiatives we’ve been able to accomplish in a relatively short period of time:

• Classic FM’s 50th Anniversary was celebrated with a number of events throughout 2022. Our region’s only classical music station remains one of the very best classical stations anywhere. I was privileged to work every day with our outstanding team of six local on-air hosts, all of whom have amazing background and knowledge of that musical genre. Continue to Listen, Learn, and Love that incredible music with them every day on Classic FM.

• As part of the 50th Anniversary, we launched the Classic FM Music Educator Award program in September 2022. To date, we’ve honored 21 local music teachers and have welcomed their ensembles to WCNY to record performances, which we’ve aired on Classic FM. We are so pleased to be able to recognize these amazing educators throughout our region.

• Community FM, WCNY HD-3, launched in the Summer of 2022 with two daily hours of local, community-oriented programming. Today, the station that promises to give voice to Local People and Local Perspectives offers 60 hours a week of programming, including 14 original local programs and 12 local podcasts. The topics are varied and relevant. It’s quality local programming you simply can’t find anywhere else.

• In the Summer of 2023, thanks to generous donors and funders who believe in the mission of public media, we were able to successfully upgrade our radio stations’ automation system. Our previous system was end-of-life and prone to frequent breakdown. So, this was a very real need. By contrast, our new system is fully featured and highly-reliable, ensuring that the WCNY radio stations you love are there 24/7 with the quality content you expect.

• Just this past September, we launched Pulso Central, our region’s first and only Spanish-language radio station, now airing on WCNY HD-2 and via live streaming. Pulso Central is the result of a year’s worth of hard work by both our staff, and by a highly dedicated volunteer task force drawn from the local Latino community. The creation of Pulso fulfills a huge need for one of the fastest-growing segments of the Central New York community.

None of these initiatives was the product of one person’s work. Each was a true team effort, requiring a great deal of time and dedication by a lot of outstanding professionals. I’m immensely grateful for the entire staff here at WCNY, along with the dozens of volunteers who step up every day to help ensure that this organization remains among the finest public communications entities in the country. I was privileged to be a part of it!

2024 was an Exciting Year for WCNY and Our Supporters!

In addition to traditional on-air fundraising programming and premiums, WCNY was able to offer 11 local ticket offers across four regional venues, that’s almost one per month! Additionally, we hope to reschedule the Daniel O’Donnell concert planned for November once he announces new dates for his U.S. tour.

Our programming and concert lineup had something for everyone—from Celtic Woman and Les Misérables to Jon Batiste and John Fogerty. We even managed to throw in some smooth Yacht Rock Revue, turned up the heat with Santana, and relived the 90’s with Train, Hootie and the Blowfish, and Counting Crows. We even got a little sciencey with Neil deGrasse Tyson, who was truly out of this world!

WCNY is grateful for our partnerships with LiveNation, ASM Global, The Landmark Theatre, Broadway in Syracuse, PBS National, Creative Artists International, and Waganer Entertainment. These collaborations allow us to bring some of our most beloved programming beyond the small screen and offer live experiences right here in Central New York.

None of this would be possible without our WCNY community. We would like to extend a heartfelt thanks for all who made gifts in response to our special pledge programming. It is our supporters who enable us to continue delivering quality programming and unique experiences that resonate throughout our community.

We are thrilled that, with much enthusiasm and support, our events unfolded into unforgettable evenings filled with exceptional performances that left audiences moved, inspired, and even dancing in the aisles! Thanks to your support, WCNY can maintain its dedication to excellence and innovation in programming. We can’t wait to see what 2025 has to offer!
