President's Letter Like many mid-size American cities, Syracuse is wrestling to define its future.

Rubin Wright

“Change is happening now. It is evident everywhere you look in the city,” says Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh. “It is incumbent upon us as public servants to make sure our institutions are evolving with our communities.”

To better understand this transition -- from its Salt City past to an unknown tomorrow -- WCNY dedicated a team of journalists to explore the changes being implemented at the city’s most visible institution – the Syracuse Police Department.

“SPD: Reckoning and Reform” is a six-part series produced over a two-and-a-half-year period that airs at 9 p.m. on October 4 through October 9. SPD is more than just a police drama; it illustrates the tensions pulling at a city in flux. We hope that it encourages people to reflect on these changes and their impact on our lives.

During the past 50 years, Syracuse has become more diverse and, arguably, more complex. Previously unfamiliar languages are now spoken easily in the city’s schools. Manufacturing jobs have migrated, leaving unemployment, poverty, and spiraling crime behind. Meanwhile, new industries have created jobs in technology, aviation, education, medicine, and data science. And a highway with a divisive past is being replaced by a new road to an uncertain destination. “Change is hard. It is for everyone," Walsh says. "Public safety is a foundational element of society. And if I look at all the departments where I made changes, hiring an outside police chief was among, if not the most significant change I made as mayor." Arriving from Little Rock, Arkansas, Chief Kenton Buckner was introduced at an emotional press conference in December 2018. “I prayed for this opportunity," he said, holding back tears as the mayor patted him on the right shoulder. "I am thankful that the city of Syracuse selected me." Since then, WCNY has followed Buckner as he has tried to acclimate to a new city and to manage controversy within the department. He describes his job as a tightrope-walk that places him at the center of a power triangle forced to balance the often competing demands of the mayor, the community, and the police union. “My job is to try to do the right thing,” Buckner says. We hope you will tune in starting October 4 to see if the chief can stay on the high wire, and then go to WCNY.org/SPD to learn where you can join us for community forums to discuss the public safety issues at the heart of our region’s future. Sincerely,

Lee Gatta & Joe Reddick at Syracuse University.

Joe and I feel blessed by the support we have received over the years from Syracuse and Central New York. It was the community’s support that inspired us to establish a charitable giving plan through the Community Foundation. Our life insurance proceeds will fund the Lee M. Gatta and Joe Reddick Fund, which will provide support for the causes within the community that are of primary importance to us: the support of women and girls through the work of the Women’s Fund, eldercare and cancer care coordination and caregiver support. We hope to leave a lasting legacy that changes lives and inspires others in our community to do the same.

PBS KIDS Announces ALMA’S WAY "Alma’s Way" is a new PBS KIDS animated series from Fred Rogers Productions, created by actor and writer Sonia Manzano- who positively impacted the lives of generations as “Maria” on Sesame Street. The Engaging modern-day series follows 6-year-old Alma Rivera, a proud, confident Puerto Rican girl who lives in the Bronx with her family among a diverse group of close-knit friends and community members. "Alma’s Way" celebrates and explores the thinking process- Alma’s “way” is to think things through! In every episode, "Alma's Way" aims to model self-awareness, responsible decision making, and empathy- encouraging kids to generate and value their own ideas and questions. As she uses "Think Through" moments to stop, listen, and process in the face of a tough decision, Alma reflects and takes action while demonstrating social awareness. WCNY News | 42

WCNY will premiere an inside look at the Syracuse Police Department. The series follows Syracuse Chief of Police Kenton Buckner as he adapts to his new role as Chief of Police. Buckner has to quickly adapt to a situation where many in the city are calling for massive reform and change to the police force. He will have to struggle with difficult decisions in an environment that keeps the pressure on 24/7, where one simple decision can have a massive impact. "SPD: Reckoning and Reform" is a six-part series that will be told across six days.

Premieres October 4 at 9 p.m. on WCNY-TV Made possible by funding from:

Tuesday, October 19 Many know the name Helen Keller, but few know the whole story of arguably the world’s most famous blind and deaf person. Viewers will follow the life of Helen Keller in an all-new documentary film produced by Laurie Block and a performance by actress Cherry Jones. The documentary will include neverbefore-seen photos, videos, and an adaptation of her story from the viewpoint of Keller and those who knew her. Keller’s story includes struggles and obstacles she faced that led her to push boundaries of human rights for the disabled community. It will illuminate her role in becoming one of the 20th century’s human rights pioneers. Also, the obstacles, abuses, and challenges she faced in a world that was against her from birth. Keller’s story is fascinating. Like many who would come after her in the civil rights movement, she was a crucial figure in the fight for human rights. “Becoming Helen Keller” will bring to light the struggle she faced in trying to achieve her life’s work of basic rights for the blind and deaf. “Becoming Helen Keller” will air as part of the “American Masters” series on Tuesday, October 19 at 9:30 p.m. WCNY News | 47
