President’s Letter If it is true that we move at the speed of trust, then PBS is on a rapid pace forward.

Co-Editors Amanda Hayden Lauren Easton

For the 19th year in a row, PBS has been named the most-trusted name in media. Based on a representative survey of more than 1,000 adults (18 years and older), the report showed just how much people value what public media provides.

The respondents stated that the investment going into PBS provides even more value for our tax dollars, than spending on agricultural subsidies, aid to college students, environmental protection, and highways, roads, and bridges. In addition, they ranked the value of PBS in a range with the return on dollars spent to provide for the nation's security, funding social security, and overseeing the safety of food and prescription drugs. Clearly, the programming and services that each of you – and our local, state, and federal government officials – support, resonates with viewers across the country. Parents said PBS is the network that best prepares children for success in school. Teachers said they appreciate PBS as a safe source for digital gaming and learning apps. Citizens across parties ranked PBS the most-reliable news and public affairs network. At WCNY, we are pleased to not only provide the full spectrum of PBS’s national programming, but to enhance that mix with our own locally produced shows. “The Reading League’s Reading Buddies” will bring 20 new episodes to the air this fall and will appear on other PBS stations, including Alabama Public Television. In the new season, our favorites, Dusty, Dott, and Alphabott, will even have some new human and puppet friends. We are exploring local angles to address broader economic trends in "On the Money," the region's premier finance and economic development show. Whether it is looking at improvements at the airport or the conservation of the Finger Lakes, this show is unique in how it addresses growth opportunities in Central New York. Coming out of the pandemic, we are pleased to be producing as much local television as any station of our size. WCNY is also collaborating with other New York PBS stations to focus on issues important to all of us, including suicide prevention, senior isolation, and treatment for opioid addiction. We are also looking to provide learning workshops this summer to help train a new generation of producers and documentarians. The respect that PBS has earned from the American public is made possible by your dedication and support for our shared mission. Thank you for your trust. Sincerely,

Meet Our Taste of Fame Chef!

Born and raised in Mexico City, Pati Jinich is the host of the 3x James Beard Award-winning and 4x Emmy nominated PBS television series “Pati’s Mexican Table.” The series is widely distributed in the U.S. through PBS and streamed worldwide on Amazon Prime. Pati is the resident chef at the Mexican Cultural Institute in Washington D.C. and author of three cookbooks, “Pati’s Mexican Table: The Secrets of Real Mexican Home Cooking,” “Mexican Today: New and Rediscovered Recipes for the Contemporary Kitchen,” and “Treasures of the Mexican Table.” A former political analyst focused on Mexican political institutions and U.S. - Mexico relations at the Inter-American Dialogue, Pati holds a master’s degree in Latin American Studies from Georgetown University. She switched policy papers for cooking pots, to make exploring and sharing Mexico’s cuisine her life’s work. The Council of the Americas named Pati one of the “Top 5 Border Ambassadors,” who have performed outstanding work bringing the United States and Mexico closer together in their Americas Quarterly (AQ) magazine. She was also named one of the National Immigration Forum’s “Keepers of the American Dream,” which honors individuals who embody the spirit of immigrant achievement, and contribute to the well-being of immigrants in the U.S. Pati was invited to cook at the White House for President Obama’s Cinco de Mayo and Easter celebrations. She was named one of the “100 Greatest Cooks of All Time” by Epicurious in 2017, and was profiled on the front page of The New York Times food section in October 2018 in the feature, “Forget the Wall: Pati Jinich Wants to Build a Culinary Bridge to Mexico.” She is a member of the Kitchen Cabinet for the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History, and her company, Mexican Table, has been certified as a Women Owned Business by WBENC. Pati is a regular guest on NBC’s “Today Show,” CBS’s “The Talk,” ABC’s “Good Morning America,” The Food Network,” NPR’s “All Things Considered” and “The Splendid Table,” and Univision’s “Despierta America.” She has been featured in The Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, and other national and regional press. In addition to writing on her website, www.patijinich.com, she contributes to a wide array of print and online publications, including The Washington Post and The New York Times. Pati has resided in the Washington, D.C. area for the past 20 years, where she and her husband are raising their three Mexican-American sons.

LINER NOTES As Classic FM’s 50th Anniversary celebration continues throughout 2022, we ask you to LISTEN, LEARN, and LOVE the region’s only Classical music station! When we say LISTEN-LEARN-LOVE, we really mean it. Classic FM features local hosts with extensive knowledge of classical music, people who carefully choose the music they play, and who share with you interesting facts that enhance your listening experience, to help you appreciate this wonderful music even more. Let’s introduce you to our talented and knowledgeable hosts:

DIANE JONES is Classic FM’s Program Manager and hosts mid-day “Classic Choices” live 10 a.m.-2 p.m. She also produces and hosts the nationally syndicated “Feminine Fusion,” which airs Sundays at 2 p.m. on Classic FM. An active composer, Diane has received commissions from nationally and internationally recognized musicians and ensembles. She’s also completed five residencies in Syracuse area schools, introducing young musicians to composition. Diane is an accomplished flutist, performing regularly with Samba Laranja, the Central New York Flute Choir, and the 315 Ensemble. Her music has been featured on two SAMMY-award winning CDs.

BRUCE PAULSEN hosts “Classic Choices” live, 6-10 a.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. He also hosts “Concert Hall” at 8 p.m. on Saturdays. With degrees in music and theatre, Bruce has performed with many of the great musicians of our time, including Luciano Pavarotti and Placido Domingo. He brings more than thirty years’ performance experience to the microphone. WCNY is his second expedition into radio. Before Classic FM, he hosted opera programs and weekends for WGKA, Atlanta’s Voice of the Arts.

MARIE LAMB hosts afternoon “Classic Choices” live, 2-6 p.m. weekdays. She also hosts “Opera Encore” on Saturday afternoons. Marie is a Central New York native and a graduate of the Setnor School of Music at Syracuse University. She began in radio as the host of classical and opera programs at WIKE-AM, at the former Eisenhower College in Seneca Falls. Let’s Cook Together: Rice and Beans from Mexico WCNY is excited to announce this year’s Taste of Fame Celebrity Chef, Pati Jinich. We all know children learn best from the adults in their lives, especially when it comes to learning in the kitchen. Born in Mexico, Pati’s love for food began during her childhood, where she learned to cook alongside her family. Chef Pati shares her love for cooking with not only her three sons, but the families who watch her PBS shows, “Pati’s Mexican Table” and “La Frontera.” While cooking, children can learn new science and math concepts. Be sure to check out the variety of recipes PBS KIDS has to offer on pbskids.org/parents. Your family can have fun cooking at home together with simple and healthy ingredients, just like Chef Pati. Experimenting in the kitchen can be an exciting learning experience for children. Whether they are trying out new recipes or eating foods from other cultures, families can learn a lot together. Remember, it’s not the end of the world if your child makes a mistake while cooking. We were all young once, and the best chefs, including Chef Pati, learn from their mistakes. Take inspiration from Chef Pati’s passion for Mexican cuisine, and try this “Let’s Go Luna!” Rice and Beans from Mexico recipe with the children in your life. Rice is a key ingredient in countries all over the world, and there are numerous ways that each culture prepares their traditional version. In “Let’s Go Luna!” the main character, Luna the Moon, travels around the world with her friends Andy, Carmen, and Leo. They celebrate the diversity of each country's traditional dishes throughout their worldwide adventures!

Check out more PBS KIDS recipes at pbs.org/parents

Ingredients Directions

1 tbsp olive oil 1 onion 1 red bell pepper, diced 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 15.5-oz. can black beans, drained and rinsed 1 14.5-oz. can diced tomatoes, with juices 2 tsp. chili powder 1 tsp. cumin 1 cup long-grain white rice Salt Freshly ground black pepper Chopped cilantro, for garnish

In a Dutch oven or other heavy-bottomed pot with a lid, heat the olive oil over medium high heat. Add the onion and bell pepper and cook, stirring frequently, until the vegetables are tender, and the onion is translucent, approximately five minutes. Add the garlic and black beans and cook until the beans are heated through, for around two minutes. Stir in 1 1/2 cups of water, diced tomatoes and their juices, chili powder, cumin, rice, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Bring to a boil, cover, reduce the heat and simmer until the rice is cooked approximately 20 minutes. Serve garnished with chopped cilantro.
