For 20 years, “Ivory Tower” has been a wallflower-free zone on WCNY. For the first episode, the chairs were set up in a horseshoe. Rubin opened by teeing up an exchange between Kristi Andersen and Bob Spitzer on whether Andrew Cuomo’s withdrawal from the 2002 governor’s race was petulant or prudent. The other panelists, Glenn Altschuler, Tara Ross, and Greene, sat ready to weigh in.

“At first, we wanted it to be like the McLaughlin Group. Poke each other with a sharp stick for half an hour,” Greene recalled. However, that changed when they realized that the audience preferred a thoughtful conversation among people who were not afraid to express different points of view.

The panelists started arriving early to get their arguing over in the green room. “That allowed us to be civil on the air,” Greene said.

By all accounts, “Ivory Tower's” lasting success is due to a couple of things unique to our region. Its location provides a safe distance from the frenzied pace and insular environment of the DC scene (what Rubin calls a “news cocoon”). And our diverse colleges and universities – including Greene's Cazenovia College and Rubin’s Syracuse University – make the area a center of intellect and perspective.

At the end of the week, Central New Yorkers can still sit back and hear intelligent analysis of the week's news. The panel may have new names and faces, and the set now includes a table and an occasional bookshelf. But WCNY’s Doug Moreau is a constant – he has deftly directed “Ivory Tower” for 16 years – and the show remains wallflower-free.

SEPTEMBER IS...

Suicide Prevention Awareness Month According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, suicide is the 12th leading cause of death in the United States. In 2020, there were an estimated 1.2 million suicide attempts in the U.S. alone. Suicide and thoughts of suicide affect more than just the suicidal person; they affect family members, friends, etc. It’s important to know the warning signs of suicidal thoughts, and what to do in the event of a crisis before anything occurs.

September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. During this month, people are encouraged to change the way the public views suicide/mental health, while also learning more about preventative measures. Everyone from parents to children and school staff should look into helpful resources to educate themselves on this important matter. There are countless resources online, as well as community programs that inform millions.

The best way to help those who are dealing with depression and/or suicidal thoughts is to communicate. Asking questions that elicit a more in-depth response instead of a simple one-word answer is a great place to start. It is important to build a trusting relationship, and to validate the person’s feelings rather than immediately shutting them down or making them feel guilty. People shouldn’t be nervous about getting further help for someone if it seems necessary. The community should actively train themselves in seeing the signs of suicidal thinking and prepare themselves to help those at risk.

Talking about mental health may be daunting, but it could be the conversation someone needs to have. The more people are aware of the signs of suicidal thoughts, the greater the chance they could save someone’s life.

“Ivory Tower” is a weekly round-table discussion that focuses on news and events from the perspective of academicians from across Central New York. Hosted by David Chanatry, Professor of Journalism, Utica College and Director of the New York Reporting Project.

“Reading Buddies” returns for its second season with all-new episodes on Sept.

Ever since 2020, there has been a persistent spike in violent incidents. While this trend isn't unique to New York, the situation has captivated New Yorkers across the political spectrum. Some politicians attribute the crisis to recent changes in the state's criminal justice laws, like restrictions on the use of cash bail, while others point to the arrival of COVID-19 and the fallout from the pandemic. On this episode of “CONNECT NY,” host David Lombardo will be joined by a panel of experts to cut through the noise and get to the truth about this tumultuous period in New York.

In season three, “Behind the Woman” will travel around Central New York to highlight the inspiring work being done by diverse women to improve communities across the region. Recently it became a dream of ours that every child, no matter their circumstances, would have the opportunity to visit Disney World. We believe that Disney World is a place that can inspire them as they begin making life decisions.

Our vision was set in motion when we created a donor-advised fund at the Community Foundation. Our fund provides support for the Dunbar Association to send its students, who exemplify the qualities of kindness and character, on an all-expenses paid adventure to Disney World.

We hope that continued support from our Dunbar Disney Dreams Fund will help spark curiosity and motivate our community’s young people for many years to come.

It’s been a busy time here as the station continues its year-long observance of WCNY Classic FM’s 50th Anniversary. Starting Labor Day morning, listen as we count down YOUR picks of the Top-50 Classical Music pieces of all time. We’d like to thank everyone that sent in a nomination ballot during July and August. This is your annual opportunity to directly influence the great music you hear every day on Classic FM. On August 7, Classic FM was thrilled to co-sponsor the 49th Bluegrass Ramble Picnic at beautiful Little York Lake in Cortland County. Every year, Central New York’s “Mr. Bluegrass,” our own Bill Knowlton and his committee put together the largest bluegrass festival in New York and New England, this year featuring 17 different bands! It was a terrific event, and we were pleased to do our part to make it a great success; and also to honor Bill, who is now in his 50th year hosting Bluegrass Ramble every Sunday night on Classic FM. We hope you take a few minutes to read the article in this edition of “CONNECT” regarding the launch of our new Community FM station. This is an exciting project for all of us at WCNY, and we hope you follow the progress as the station continues to develop in the months ahead.

Our goal is to provide an outlet to talk about all the things that make Central New York such a great place to live and work while also giving a voice to people in our community who have great stories to tell.

• Built to Serve. This monthly show places a spotlight on the crucial work being done by our local non-profit and charitable organizations. Listen to the first episode hosted by former local news anchor Tammy Palmer, featuring Beth Broadway of InterFaith Works, talking about how her organization settles immigrants and refugees here in CNY.

• Central Current Radio. In partnership with our region’s new non-profit news source, Community FM is broadcast on WCNY 91.3 HD-3 CentralCurrent.org, we are pleased to present a in Syracuse, on WUNY 89.5 HD-3 in Utica, and half-hour bi-weekly show focusing on the state of on WJNY 90.9 HD-3 in Watertown. In addition to these shows, Community FM also features the work of local podcasters, like SUNY-Oswego Professor Francisco Suarez, host of the bi-weekly entertainment podcast From Suarez’s Basement. We are also thrilled to partner with Yaddo, the renowned retreat for artists in Saratoga Springs, to broadcast their podcast Shadow // Yaddo.

But wait, there’s more! On top of all that, Community FM airs the audio portion of WCNY’s outstanding TV productions, including “Ivory Tower,” “Cycle of Health,” “On the Money,” “Behind the Woman,” and Emmy-nominated “SPD: Reckoning and Reform.” Starting with the new semester this fall, the station will begin a new season broadcasting Syracuse University’s “Thursday Morning Roundtable.”

DUSTY, DOTT, AND ALPHABOTT ARE RETURNING TO THE READING ROOM FOR SEASON TWO OF “READING BUDDIES!” The series focuses on improving children’s literacy while also promoting the importance of friendship and developing social skills. The trio teaches viewers about letter names and sounds, reading words, phonological awareness, and much more! It’s the perfect show for students in Pre-K through 3rd grade who are still learning about the components of reading.

Joining the crew this season are Mary and Marty. These two hilarious gnomes assist the Reading Buddies family by introducing new words throughout each episode of the season. They focus on using tier 2 vocabulary words to expose learners to more advanced terminology. Tier 2 vocabulary words are highfrequency words used across various topics that influence speaking and reading. When kids learn these words and their meanings, they are able to use their speech ability more efficiently.

Following the completion of classroom study, students spend a day in WCNY’s Enterprise America City, which they are responsible for operating. Students become entrepreneurs, employees, consumers, and citizens while practicing and applying financial and civic literacy skills. They learn how businesses, governments, and non-profit agencies depend on each other. And, often for the first time, students are able to understand that their career goals can become a reality.

With 14 different businesses to choose from, students are given the opportunity to pick a career path that interests them.

Since the start of the pandemic, we have been busy at work improving and modernizing the program. With new features and technology, the space is ready to host middle school students who are eager to learn about responsibility and accountability within a safe environment.

t was a warm summer day at the former studios of WCNY-TV on Old Liverpool Road and we had just finished interviewing some local professors to see if they’d be up for the challenge of discussing the news each week on a TV show.

“We’ll be lucky if it last six weeks,” mused David Rubin, then-dean of the Newhouse School at Syracuse University. He’d agreed to be the moderator of this new show.

Rubin taught a course about media and society and so he knew that many TV shows flop fairly quickly.

Here we are 20 years later, with new faces, a different set, and a city studio, but still featuring four professors (out of a panel of about ten regulars) to talk about local, national and world news each Friday night.

The genesis of the show came from the general manager of the station, Michael Fields, who wanted to showcase the intelligent faculty of the area’s colleges and universities. His goal: to add context and depth to the news, which Fields thought was missing from local TV.

Watch the 1-Hour Anniversary Special on Friday, Sept. 16 at 8 p.m. on WCNY-TV. For 20 years, “Ivory Tower” has been appointment viewing for Central New Yorkers on Friday nights. The round-table discussion that focuses on news and events from the perspective of academicians from across central New York, has been the backbone of local programming on WCNY. Hosted through the years by David Rubin, David Chanatry, and Barbara Fought, “Ivory Tower” hopes to continue its run for another 20 years.

The show was named, tongue-in-cheek, “The Ivory Tower Half Hour.” It became part of a news series of local shows airing every weeknight on WCNY-TV at 11 p.m. The other shows focused on health, religion, minority issues, and the arts.

“Ivory Tower” is the only one of the five shows begun in 2002 that remains.

Because of its popularity, Fields soon moved the show to the 8 p.m. slot on Fridays. And now it repeats Saturdays at 5:30 p.m. and is streamed for viewing any time at wcny.org. Over the years the title got shortened to “Ivory Tower.”

The original theme music, which recently has returned, was Rubin’s idea. It’s from the 1938 Rodgers and Hart musical, “The Boys of Syracuse.”

We wrestled a bit with the format.

How to make talking heads, especially professors used to droning on and on, into an intriguing show. We decided we could keep the pace moving if we rotated through three different topics during the half-hour. My husband, Nelson Price, a former cable TV executive, said to Rubin and me, “you need some kind of quick lightning round at the end to keep the pace going.” Rubin immediately said, “we’re all professors, let’s give grades of A and F.” And that last segment is the one many viewers tell me they like the best—hearing who gets skewered or praised.

More than 23 faculty members from nine institutions have appeared as panelists on the show. Rubin stepped down as moderator in 2017, and Dave Chanatry from Utica University stepped in. I’ve remained the substitute anchor through the years. Of the original five panelists, Tara Ross and Kristi Andersen still remain.

The host sends out a list of about seven topics on Wednesdays and the panelists that week vote by email. After a couple rounds of email discussion, we have the three topics to discuss. Everyone preps on Thursdays and we roll tape at 8:20 a.m. on Friday mornings. The hardest part is often finding a good “A” for the last segment.

Professor Robert Thompson, who regularly opines nationally about TV and popular culture said he’s been a fan from the start. He believes the appeal of “Ivory Tower” is that it’s not a slick, high-voltage, flashy graphics kind of show.

None of us get paid, not even for travel.

It takes a good chunk of time out of the week but I think we keep doing it because we genuinely like talking with each other about what’s going on in the world. Or, as I sometimes tease them, it’s because they enjoy the flattery of being recognized every once in a while at the grocery store— “aren’t you on TV?”

“It’s like I wandered into some faculty conference room and listened to half a dozen smart people talk about things that happened in the news this week,” he said.

“It’s good TV.” “It’s easy to keep up on national news,” he added, “but the reason I kept watching is that most of what I learn about state and local news, I learn on Ivory Tower.”

Here’s how the show comes together. The producer/director, Doug Moreau, handles the scheduling, which sometimes is a challenge to find four professors who can make it that week.

Personally, I have found it a rewarding part of my career, but I never imagined when Rubin asked me to be his substitute that I’d be doing it for 20 years. I learn something new or gain a new perspective from the panelists every time I’m on. And I hope we have stretched the minds of our viewers, as well, over these 20 years.

The Alzheimer’s Association, Central New York Chapter, works with residents across a 14-county region to help those who have been impacted by Alzheimer’s and all other dementia. We offer support for caregivers and those who have been diagnosed with the disease by providing free, confidential services, including one-on-one care consultations, support groups, social engagement opportunities, and respite care. Every year, our organization hosts five Walks to End Alzheimer’s, each located in a region that we serve. The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the world’s largest fundraiser to fight Alzheimer’s and all other dementias. All funds raised through Walk to End Alzheimer's further the care, support, and research efforts of the Alzheimer's Association.

There are more than 410,000 people in New York State living with Alzheimer’s disease or another dementia, and that number is expected to grow to 460,000 by the year 2025. There are also more than 565,000 caregivers working tirelessly to support patients who have the disease. The majority of these caregivers are women who provide countless hours of free care to family members throughout New York.
