FOR OUR MEMBERS ...

Though my career was spent as a professional photographer, mostly for Central Michigan University, I’ve been associated with WCMU Public Radio since 1980. I have reflected many times about how WCMU has improved our quality of life.

My wife, Peggy Brisbane, and son, Sam, moved to Mount Pleasant in December 1979. We discovered NPR while listening to WAMU in Washington, D.C. Imagine our surprise when we learned about WCMU’s “Our Front Porch” roots music concert series produced by now-retired John Sheffler. He booked singer-songwriters, bluegrass, Cajun, blues, Celtic and string bands and brought them to campus where they performed over the air “live.” What a treat!

In 1985 I felt like WCMU needed to offer a blues and soul music program so I offered to host a program, “The Juke Joint,” as a volunteer. John gave me the green light. It’s been a fixture on Sunday nights for nearly 40 years. Why has it lasted nearly 40 years? Because listeners value blues music and the history I share and they support it during our fundraisers. I never take their generosity for granted.

I’ve heard from listeners from all over North America and that is very satisfying.

As I say when I sign off on Sunday nights: “I’ll see you on the flip side!”

BACK TO SCHOOL

As summer winds down, it’s time to gear up for an exciting and successful fall term. Whether your child is starting kindergarten or heading back for another year of high school, preparation is key. Here’s your ultimate guide to make the transition smooth and stress-free.

1. School Supplies Checklist

Backpack: Sturdy and comfortable.

Notebooks and Binders: Keep subjects organized.

Writing Supplies: Pencils, pens, highlighters.

Tech Essentials: Calculator, tablet/laptop if required.

Art Supplies: Crayons, markers, glue sticks.

2. Health and Wellness

Immunizations: Check with your pediatrician to ensure your child’s vaccinations are up-to-date.

Sleep Schedule: Start adjusting bedtime routines a couple of weeks before school starts.

Healthy Snacks: Stock up on nutritious options for lunches and snacks.

3. Back-to-School Shopping Tips

Clothing: Shop for weather-appropriate attire and school uniforms if necessary.

Footwear: Comfortable shoes are a must.

Sales and Discounts: Look out for back-to-school sales and use coupons to save money.

BACK TO SCHOOL RESOURCE LIBRARY

The Michigan Learning Channel has everything you need to get a strong start and keep learning from September all the way until summer.

EASING INTO THE ROUTINE

Consistent routines provide comfort and a sense of safety to young children. Following a schedule each day makes children feel safer and happier, which often leads to better behavior and cooperation. When they know what to expect, and what’s expected of them, kids feel more comfortable and confident about what lies ahead. Switching from a summer to a school schedule can be stressful to everyone in the household. Avoid first-day-of-school mayhem by practicing your routine a few days in advance. Set the alarm clock, go through your morning rituals, and get in the car or to the bus stop on time. Routines help children feel comfortable, and establishing a solid school routine will make the first day of school go much smoother.

DONOR SPOTLIGHT: SHANNON & ANITA PATRICK

Shannon and Anita Patrick’s careers and dedication to community service have profoundly shaped their lives. Shannon, who holds a BA from Purdue University, spent over 40 years with the Social Security Administration, eventually becoming a District Manager in Mt. Pleasant. Anita, with a BA in Interior Design from Central Michigan University, worked various retail positions while caring for a child with disabilities. Hailing from Indiana, the Patricks blend rural and suburban influences. Shannon was raised on a farm, while Anita grew up in the suburbs of Indianapolis. Despite their Hoosier twang, they are now proud Michiganders.

Public radio and television play a significant role in the Patricks’ daily lives. WCMU radio is their morning companion, providing reliable information and friendly voices. Programs like All Things Considered and PBS News Hour offer thoughtful perspectives on global issues. The Patricks also enjoy stimulating shows like Ask the Specialists and Destination Michigan. Shannon was an annual guest on Ask the Specialists for twenty years, answering live calls about Social Security, Supplemental Security Income, and Medicare benefits. Both Shannon and Anita have volunteered for this program and during WCMU pledge drives. Shannon’s love for British mysteries brings both entertainment and humor. He enjoys the adventures of Father Brown and the high body count in Midsomer Murders Anita’s enthusiasm for shows like Finding Your Roots, Antiques Roadshow, All Creatures Great and Small, and period dramas like Downton Abbey reflects her appreciation for drama and storytelling. Her passion for cooking shows adds a delightful touch to their lives.

The Patricks’ support for PBS stems from deep gratitude for its role in their family’s life. PBS has been a constant educational and cultural presence for their children and grandchildren, with iconic programs like Sesame Street making a lasting impact. For the Patricks, the voices of Tom Ball, Robert Barclay, and Mike Johnston are more than familiar—they are treasures that reflect the essence of Michigan. “The many souls who produce and narrate local radio and television shows make us proud to be from Michigan and to support the rich and important local programming not found on commercial television or streaming services,” they said.

The Patricks have proudly supported PBS since 1971, recognizing it as a vital source of local and national content that enriches their community and lives. “We support PBS because it supports us,” they said. “PBS keeps ALL of us informed and sincerely tries to be even-handed in reporting. PBS provides important local news and programming not found on commercial television or streaming services. PBS shows us the world, the universe, and the microscopic. PBS drives us through Michigan, walks us through Europe, and lets us listen to bright and entertaining people. Most of us get all of that at minimal or no cost. That’s an unbelievable value! So, when PBS and WCMU need a little help, we try to help.”

DEAR WCMU LISTENERS,

On November 28, 2018, I showed up at the Public Broadcasting Center at Central Michigan University for my first day of what I will always call “the dream job of a lifetime.” I was the new host of “Afternoon Classical,” and given the awesome opportunity and responsibility of sharing the world’s finest music with listeners throughout central and northern Michigan. Wow!

Since March 1, 2023, my duties here at WCMU have included bringing important news, weather, information, stories and even gardening advice to WCMU listeners. Along the way, I have learned so much from my colleagues, from the many guests that I have interviewed here at the WCMU studios (or via Zoom) and from you. WCMU listeners are truly the best! Now it is time to “turn a page.” I will be moving to Michigan’s West Shore to be closer to family and to pursue other opportunities and interests. My last day at WCMU will be Friday, August 23.

It has been a great joy and honor to work with the top-notch team.

Sincerely,

WAKE UP TO THE WORLD
