September always brings me so much joy! I remember as a child getting ready for the new school year… shopping for supplies, picking out my first day outfit, meeting my teachers and setting new goals. Walking into the school building with butterflies in my stomach, I could feel change was in the air! I still get that same feeling every September. It’s time to leave the chaos of summer behind and settle into a new routine! Whether it’s a goal at work, a fresh fitness plan or maybe just a pledge to cook more meals at home, this time of year gives you the opportunity to make a goal and go after it! This Fall, make WCMU part of your routine! Whether listening to Morning Edition on your way to the office, watching the new PBS Kids programming with your little ones or setting aside time to read our email newsletters… there are several ways WCMU can be a part of your routine! We have so much in store for you this month including… the new three-part series, The U.S. and the Holocaust: A film by Ken Burns, Lynn Novick, and Sarah

The ChaceElizabethReverends, andBrian , grew up in the same town in Massachusetts but didn’t start dating until they were freshman at different Universities. They have fond memories from dating long distance and visiting each other on weekends. The Chaces have been married for 53 years, have two sons, one daughter, two daughters-in-law and two grandchildren.

Brian’s first career was as an electrical engineer and Elizabeth’s was first as an OB nurse and then as a Certified Nurse Midwife. After 30 years, Elizabeth was called to become an Episcopal priest and was ordained in 2002. There was a need for priests in Michigan which is what ultimately led them to Grayling and Frederic, MI. Brian followed in Elizabeth’s footsteps 10 years later and was also ordained as an Episcopal priest. Although they are now both retired, they still find enjoyment in subbing for churches, when needed. Brian and Elizabeth enjoy spending time at their cottage and giving back to their communities by sitting on non-profit boards and supporting causes close to their hearts. Some non-profits they serve and support are the River House Women’s Shelter, the Crawford County Community Christian Help Center Food Pantry, the Crawford County Commission on Aging, The GRACE Center counseling center, and several boards and committees for the Episcopal Diocese of Eastern Michigan. The Chaces have also established endowed scholarships at each of their alma maters.

Brian and Elizabeth have been listening to NPR ever since it began over 50 years ago. The Chaces, “listen to WCMU because of NPR, certainly. But we also listen to WCMU for their local news coverage, and for the wonderful variety of music they offer, from Mosaic and Afternoon Classical, to Folk Alley, American Routes, Acoustic Café, Thistle and Shamrock, and especially The Beat, Homespun and Juke Joint!”

“Chippewa Nature Center became a sponsor of WCMU because we believe in their mission to educate, inform, entertain and engage the communities we serve through programming and partnerships. This is very much in line with our mission to provide educational, recreational and cultural experiences for all. Partnering with WCMU has been fulfilling in knowing that we are helping to support dynamic, relevant programming, while also educating people of the region about all CNC has to offer.”-

September 12: 988: A Call for Crisis Care

September 19: The So-called Mystery of Rapa Nui (Easter Island) Who moved the giant monolithic statues of Rapa Nui, a remote island in the South Pacific? And how did they do it? These questions have been at the center of much speculation and debate since Europeans first arrived there 300 years ago on Easter Sunday, 1722, and called it “Easter Island.”

Discovery Block: Mondays at 8 PM

September 5: Smarter Health Episode 4: People In Episode 4, the people working with artificial intelligence, developing it, and the patient receiving care involving AI. How can this technology thrive in our complex and broken healthcare system where doing the most good or giving more patients access to care isn’t always incentivized?

The federal government has transitioned the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline into an easyto-remember 3-digit number. 988 is a hotline for mental health emergencies like suicidal thoughts and life-threatening behavior—that anyone can dial or text for help. What actually happens when someone dials 988? What do people expect when they call to report a mental health crisis? And what does crisis response look like?

Every Monday night in our Discovery Block you’ll find an hour of special programming often dedicated to documentaries.
