For Our Members ...

It’s time to break out the sweaters and take in some fall color, friends. October in Michigan is incredible! Did you remember to winterize the plumbing in the cottage? Is the outboard on the fishing boat all set for its winter slumber?

There’s no shortage of work and play to be done outdoors this month, and in my opinion, no better time to work comfortably outside while taking in the wonderful fall smells and sights that we get to enjoy here in the Great Lakes State.

One of my favorite ways to enjoy WCMU while I’m working outside is to take my smartphone with me and use the WCMU app. Depending on my mood, I can choose to listen to WCMU Music and News or WCMU News and Talk. If you prefer a “real” radio, there are dozens of excellent portable radios on the market that can run all day on a single charge. When you’re done with work outside and the sun from the shorter days has shown its last, you can settle down on the couch (or anywhere, if using the app) to take in an offering from our television programming.

We’ve been doing our very best at WCMU to reach you, our members, wherever and however you want to hear and see us.

On Our Cover Destination Michigan

New Episode -

“Hometown Tours”

Join us for an adventurous trip around the state, this time on Destination Michigan we visit Lansing, Holland, Manchester, and more!

Oct. 27 at 9 pm

While we continue to offer our traditional broadcasts over-the-air via FM and TV transmitters, we are also happily accommodating an ever-growing number of online listeners and viewers with the WCMU app and PBS app – not to mention other services like YouTubeTV which also carries our programming. This year, we’ve spent 1.5 million dollars on necessary improvements to our television and video streaming infrastructure, with more improvements to audio and radio on the way! There have never been so many ways to enjoy WCMU!

Your generous contributions are truly what makes this all possible. THANK YOU for your continued support.

Barb and Joe Frankenfield moved to Mt. Pleasant, MI over 40 years ago from Columbus, OH. They didn’t plan to stay in Mt. Pleasant forever, but the town turned out to be everything they wanted in a community and more. The Frankenfields will celebrate 44 years of marriage in December.

Barb went to Ohio State and got a degree in Social Work. Joe has a Doctorate of Ministry. Barb enjoys watching various Ohio sports teams and is a big fan of Central Michigan University women’s basketball team. Joe likes to read, and they both love to listen to WCMU Public Radio. It’s typically on in their house all day. Some of their favorite programs are Morning Edition and All Things Considered and daytime music provides the background for their day.

Joe worked at St. Mary’s Catholic Church for 25 years. Barb spent most of her career at the Isabella County Commission on Aging. You may even recognize Barb from Ask the Specialist: Senior Care Specialists. She was a guest several times over the years. The Frankenfields are involved in Faith Weavers of St. Mary, a non-profit organization that serves others in their community as well as international communities.

Barb and Joe have supported special initiatives at WCMU over the years, such as sponsoring books for kids, the music library preservation program and being challenge grant sponsors for on-air radio drives. When they moved to the area all those years ago, they were worried they wouldn’t find a good public radio station.

The Frankenfields say, “We didn’t just find a good public radio station; we found an excellent one: WCMU Public Radio. We’ve learned to depend on WCMU for up-to-date news and all-around informative and entertaining programming. The staff, including many student broadcasters-intraining, is first rate. They are dedicated to enlarging the horizons of our ideas, our tastes and our awareness.”

Get to know Billy Henry, host of StarDate

Billy Henry, is the third narrator of the StarDate radio program in its 44-year history. He assumed the title from Sandy Wood, who retired from the program in 2019, and the segment’s original host Joel Block before her. Henry is involved in many creative fields. He is a lecturer at Texas State University in San Marcos, teaching classes in writing music for TV and film, mixing for TV and film, and an introduction to desktop production. He has also taught at The University of Texas at Austin and done sound design and other creative projects for the theater department.

Henry has written or mixed hundreds of pieces of music for commercial clients ranging from Chili’s to AT&T to Southwest Airlines. In 1999, he wrote the score for the film “American Detective,” and in recent years he has joined the world tours of The Court Yard Hounds, Shakira, and the Dixie Chicks.

Henry also describes himself as a “maker of things,” including musical instruments. He also has a pilot’s license and is working toward his commercial rating.

Discovery Block: Mondays at 8 pm

Every Monday night in our Discovery Block you’ll find an hour of special programming often dedicated to documentaries.

October 3: Standing in Two Worlds: Native American College Diaries

U.S government boarding schools were once used to erase Indigenous culture and force assimilation. But in the 21st century, education opens opportunities. In this documentary, Native American college students share their stories as they strive to use a college education to support themselves, and their communities, without losing sight of who they are.

October 10: No Excuses: Race and Reckoning at a Chicago Charter School

The Noble Street charter high school in Chicago followed a popular education reform model called “no excuses,” which promised low-income students better test scores and increased access to college in exchange for hyper-strict discipline. Some have called the practice “assimilationist.” Former students are asked about their time in the classroom, whether they believe they received a racist education, and whether, if given the chance, they’d opt for “no excuses” all over again.

October 17: Searching for Providers of Color

The mental health treatment field is disproportionately white. How important is it to find a care provider that can identify with a person’s culture and experiences? And how can systems be strengthened to provide acceptable mental health support to people of color?

“Searching for Providers of Color” explores how race, culture and language affect how people perceive and experience mental health conditions.
