For Our Members ...
It’s a beautiful fall with the leaves turning bright oranges and reds, the smell of apple cider and crisp mornings! We’ve been busy producing several local projects for you including a piece with four female sports coaches discussing Title IX, three new Destination Michigan programs, a new Window to the Arts on artist Alan Compo who created a mural featuring Native Americans, Meet the Candidates and Quiz Central where sixteen high schools compete against each other for winner status!
We’re excited to bring you this and all the news you depend on every day. Our local reporters cover important stories from our 42-county coverage area, plus you’ll hear essential reports from around the country and the world. All of this and so much more is possible because of your support. Truly we could not do this without you – your contributions are essential to our work. We’re honored to serve you and thousands more. Thank you!
November 17-21 we’ll have a special
On Our Cover Miss Scarlet & The Duke
Victorian London’s most delicious detective duo-witha-twist are back. Their story continues as aspiring detective Eliza Scarlet competes for cases. She even partners with her longtime friend/rival, The Duke, as their relationship delightfully and maddeningly simmers on. Sundays at 9 pm
fundraiser to support our radio programming. When you donate at various levels, you’ll also be supporting local food banks. We’re proud to contribute to our communities through these partnerships. Did you know 1 in 9 families in Michigan are food insecure?
This month we’ll celebrate Thanksgiving, the last couple of years have been difficult and yet we have so much to be thankful for – all of us at WCMU wish you a safe and happy holiday!
With appreciation, Debbie Hamlett WCMU Executive Director/General Manager

Sue Gamble was born in Evanston, IL and raised in New Jersey. A job teaching music education at Central Michigan University’s (CMU) School of Music brought her to Mt. Pleasant in 1978. Sue retired in 2016 and holds Professor Emerita status with the University. One of Sue’s favorite experiences since retiring was going to the Westminster dog show in New York City.
Sue has owned six golden retrievers over the years, and each holds a special place in her heart. Dexter and Dixie are her current companions. Upon retirement, Sue found herself with more time to do something she loves with her dogs: show them! In 2020, Dexter earned the title of #1 Golden Retriever and #3 Sporting Dog in Canada. Dexter is now a Canadian and US Grand Champion, and Dixie, who is just over two years old, has her Canadian Grand Championship and is working hard at earning her US titles.
Some of you might recognize Sue’s name. That’s because she is no stranger to our radio airwaves. Sue has been hosting Central Stage on WCMU Public Radio since 1999. It’s a monthly series showcasing performances by faculty artists and student ensembles from CMU’s School of Music. You can catch her program at 9am the first Friday of each month.
Sue has been a sustaining member of WCMU for decades and has also included WCMU in her estate plans. Sue says, “I’ve been listening to WCMU Public Radio since I came to Mt. Pleasant in 1978. It is the only radio station I listen to, and Morning Edition, Weekend Edition and All Things Considered are my primary sources of news. Of course, I especially love listening to Mosaic in the morning and Afternoon Classical in the afternoon! As a devoted listener, I feel it is particularly important that I support the station since so much of its funding comes from listeners like me.”

Susan Stamberg’s Cranberry Relish Tradition
NPR has been celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, and most of the past half-century has featured a Thanksgiving recipe from Special Correspondent Susan Stamberg.
Mama Stamberg’s Cranberry Relish
2 cups
T.
Grind the cranberries and onion together (I use an old-fashioned meat grinder, but you can use a processor – just keep pieces chunky). Add everything else. Mix. Put in a container and freeze. On Thanksgiving morning, move the relish from the freezer to the refrigerator compartment, to thaw. It will be thick, creamy, chunky, and shocking pink*. Makes 1 and ½ pints.
16
raw cranberries – washed 1 small onion ½ cup sugar ¾ cup sour cream 2
horseradish.

Program Changes
Fresh Air is moving to 7 p.m. on our main signal, with additional airings at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. on WCMU News & Talk.
All Things Considered is expanding to 4 p.m. starting Monday, October 31. The past several years have presented a growing need for breaking coverage - think back to the early days of COVID or the January 6th insurrection and subsequent committee hearings. The news of the day holds greater consequence for us all, so we want to be sure to maximize the reporting of NPR news and our WCMU news team.
There are a few other program changes you’ll see in our schedule grids highlighted inside.
Remember you can listen over the air, online at WCMU.org, through the free WCMU app, or by telling your smart speaker to play WCMU or WCMU News & Talk.

Foodraiser
WCMU Public Radio has partnered with the Feeding America food banks, covering central and northern Michigan, for the WCMU Foodraiser November 17 through 21. During this special drive you can support your favorite programs including the important news and music you listen to every day – and as a thank you gift you can select meals to be distributed through the food bank serving your region.
A dollar can help provide up to 3 meals, and more depending on a donor’s location, for families in need though the Feeding America network of food banks in central and northern Michigan.
