Discovery Block Mondays at 8 p.m. on WCMU Public Radio – May is Mental Health Awareness Month -

Call to Mind: Spotlight on Rethinking Mental Health Care will present an honest critique of the nation’s mental health care shortcomings, while highlighting tangible solutions and models for improving access and quality of care. Hosted by Kimberly Adams of Marketplace, this two-part format will allow guests to deep dive into failures, challenges and opportunities, while also allowing people to question mental health experts to ground the issues in matters most pressing to the public. Monday, May 3: Our Mental Health Crisis, By Design America’s mental health system is designed to deliver too little care, too late. Current policy and care systems devote the most resources to treating people in crisis, but provider and bed shortages remain common. How are people still finding ways to connect with help? Monday, May 10: Reinventing the Future of Mental Health Care Preventative mental health care is effective and can prevent early symptoms from becoming chronic illnesses. What will it take to reform the nation’s care systems and policies so that people get the wholistic care they need to prevent a crisis?

2021 marks NPR’s 50th anniversary of its first on-air broadcast. NPR debuted with a mission (excerpted) to, “Serve the individual, it will promote personal growth, it will regard the individual differences with respect and joy, rather than derision and hate. It will celebrate the human experience as infinitely varied, rather than vacuous and banal. It will encourage a sense of active, constructive participation, rather than apathetic helplessness.” NPR will mark 50 years with looks back, celebration and an effort to use this moment as an opportunity to reimagine what public radio can be for the audiences of tomorrow. NPR’s commitment is to Hear Every Voice with an eye to the next 50 years.

On May 3, 1971, at 5 p.m., All Things Considered debuted on 90 public radio stations. In the five decades since, almost everything about the program has changed, from the hosts, producers, editors and reporters to the length of the program, the equipment used and even the audience. However, there is one thing that remains the same: each show consists of the biggest stories of the day, thoughtful commentaries, insightful features on the quirky and the mainstream in arts and life, as well as music and entertainment, all brought alive through sound. Join local host Amy Robinson weekdays from 5 to 7 p.m. or catch it for an hour at 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.

“I can’t even begin to express how grateful we are for the personal relationship that WCMU has established with our agency. They always treat us with individual care that makes us feel appreciated, valued, and brings education to the public about ways we can help grieving children and their families. It’s such a beneficial partnership for both of us.” - Camille Gerace Nitschky, Executive Director

Pulse Fuel Defend Sense

Thank You! To All Our Rachel Vredeveld I have had a wonderful time working for WCMU Public Media! I am originally from Grand Rapids, Michigan and have been a student at Central Michigan for the past four years. I will be graduating from Central Michigan University with Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degrees in both Accounting and Human Resource Management. I am planning to pursue a human resources position. WCMU and Central Michigan have help prepare me for the business world, and I am excited to see where life takes me.

Nick Westendorp I’ve been with WCMU since the summer of 2019. I started off working at WCMU as part of the Michigan News Group Internship as a reporter stationed with the Traverse City Record Eagle Newspaper. Since then I’ve been on staff continuing to report in-house (both in the sense of at the WCMU studio and working from home during the pandemic). Following graduation I don’t have any immediate plans but I hope to begin pursuing sound design as a career.

Christina Kallis I’m honored to have worked for WCMU for three years, now. I look at the people of WCMU as close mentors who’ve prepared me for a good future in live television.

Bryce Nummer While at WCMU, I have learned so much about what it takes to be in broadcast media. Seeing Chris, Adam, and Shawn dedication to their craft showed me what it takes to be successful in broadcasting. I can’t wait to take what I learned and apply it to my future career as a news producer.

Hunter Dood I worked for WCMU from May 2020 until I graduated in November of 2020. I got the opportunity through the broadcast/journalism boot camp internship. I wrote for print, broadcast and web. I loved turning spot news because it allowed me to work quickly. I have moved to California post-graduation and I have a job as a motocross photographer and writer for State of Ethos. It has been a great experience so far!

Graduating Seniors! Tess DeGayner Tess worked at WCMU Public Radio for just over two years. As a student reporter, she covered general assignments including COVID-19, environmental projects and local news. Tess plans on moving out of state after graduation. She says she hopes to begin her career working with a local news organization.

Stephen Andrews Working at WCMU has been such an incredible experience. Everybody has been so fun, understanding, and compassionate, and I wouldn’t trade my time at the station for anything! One of my favorite memories from my time at WCMU was the weekly potluck lunches that Shawn, Alex, and I organized in the summer of 2019. It was such a bright thing to look forward to each week and even got me to come in on my birthday! I’m currently planning on taking a year off before pursuing a master’s degree in Music Therapy!

Jacquelyn Lenoir I have enjoyed my time at WMCU and getting hands on experience with the camera and audio boards. In the future I will be running social media accounts for businesses.

Anna Rudnitsky I learn something new every day working at WCMU, whether it be from the programing, the music, or my coworkers. My favorite part of this job is the lovely people I get to work with. I will miss them all as I move on to a job in professional theatre next fall.

Mama Lidia Master the art of Italian cooking this Mother’s Day weekend when Create airs a special selection of episodes from Lidia’s Kitchen during the Mama Lidia Showcase starting Friday, May 7 at 9 p.m. Join Lidia Bastianich as she puts on a culinary master class while creating delicious Italian meals for the entire family. Traveler Samantha Brown hits the road to experience the passion of a destination through food and drink, arts and culture starting May 14 at 9 p.m. on the Places to Love Showcase. Her stops include: Quebec City, Sanibel Island, Charleston, Phoenix, Miami and Santa Fe, with special episodes devoted to her favorite culinary experiences and her tips on making travel count. Join award-winning chef Vivian Howard as she digs deeper into the lesser-known roots of Southern food, cooking and living throughout the Somewhere South Showcase starting May 21 at 9 p.m. Each episode explores the ways people of different backgrounds interpret the same dish — from dumplings to hand pies to barbecue. Create ushers in the unofficial start of summer with the Red, White and BBQ Showcase, featuring mouthwatering barbecue dishes from Steven Raichlen’s Project Fire beginning May 28 at 9 p.m. The grilling guru also share techniques that elevate the backyard barbecue experience — from ember-roasting and salt-slab grilling to fire-heated iron and high-tech rotisseries.
