For Our Members ... Lucky us!!! We are heading into the very best three months anywhere – Summer in Michigan! A lot of us are here in the central and northern part of the state year-round, but soon, we will be joined by seasonal friends coming from down state and out-of-state, returning to enjoy the season and the outdoors! Even as school lets out for the year, you have ONE more homework assignment – spread the word about how loyal you are to WCMU and tell everyone you know how they can listen and watch and become big fans too. In March, I marked 32 years with WCMU, and our expanded family is great. But, when it is glorious outside, people want to be out in our summer paradise. No worries; we’ve come a long way with techno gadgets; you can listen or watch on a phone while you’re hiking or biking, on a tablet while you’re on a boat, or a laptop
while you’re relaxing in a hammock under two perfect shade trees! It’s great to be with you, weekdays from 9-noon on Mosaic and Saturdays from 1-4 on The Beat. If there is music that would sound just right for any time or place you may be, email me: nicho1d@cmich.edu Your support has built this family and your continued loyalty keeps us all together!! Thank you so much!
David Nicholas, Music Director Producer / Host of The Beat Producer / Host of Capitol Report
You’ll notice a few adjustments to your guide this month. After a complete review, we’ve combined all four of our television channel primetime listings, made it a self-mailer, and streamlined the information. Overall, this redesign provides more flexibility and cost savings. We are always looking for ways to be good stewards of your investment in WCMU.

Hiding In Plain Sight Follow the journeys of more than 20 young Americans from all over the country and all walks of life, who have struggled with thoughts and feelings that have troubled—and, at times—overwhelmed them. Hiding in Plain Sight presents an unstinting look at both the seemingly insurmountable obstacles faced by those who live with mental disorders and the hope that many have found after that storm. Real Books of Magic JUNE 15 & 22 6:00p
FIA Theater
The book of magic, filled with strange symbols and incantations, has become a core symbol in the history and folklore of sorcery. These volumes haunt the imagination of art, literature, film, and gaming—but what Dr. Justin Sledge do we actually know about Guest Lecturer the real, historical books of magic? In this two-part lecture, Dr. Sledge will trace the history of the magical book. Dr. Sledge earned his undergraduate degree at Millsaps College then went for a DRS in religious studies (Western Esotericism and Related Currents) at the Universiteit van Amsterdam and a MA and PhD in philosophy at the University of Memphis. He is currently a part-time professor of philosophy and religion at several institutions in the Metro-Detroit area and a popular local educator.

KEN BURNS PRESENTS
HIDING IN PL AIN SIGHT: YO U T H M E NTAL IL L N ESS
HIDING IN PLAIN SIGHT: YOUTH MENTAL ILLNESS features first-person accounts from more than 20 young people, ranging in age from 11 to 27, who live with mental health conditions, as well as parents, teachers, friends, healthcare providers in their lives, and independent mental health experts. The film presents an unvarnished window into daily life with mental health challenges, from seemingly insurmountable obstacles to stories of hope and resilience. Through the experiences of these young people, the film confronts the issues of stigma, discrimination, awareness, and silence, and, in doing so, help advance a shift in the public perception of mental health issues today. Part 1, Mon., June 27 at 9 p.m. Part 2, Tue., June 28 at 9 p.m. WCMU Public Television Join us for WCMU’s locally produced companion piece to HIDING IN PLAIN SIGHT
Resilience: Adapting to Adversity and Youth Mental Health Join local mental health experts as they weigh in on this crisis happening to our youth right here in mid-Michigan. They will speak about how we can better understand youth mental health as a community and how we can aid in the prevention of some cases. Plus, we will identity treatment options that are best for our young people. Tuesday, June 28 at 8:30 Sponsored locally by:

Meet Dan and Linda Cline Dan and Linda Cline have been watching and listening to WCMU Public Media for more than four decades. They retired from Midland and currently reside in Traverse City with their adorable cat, Annie. Before retirement, they would wake up with Mike Horace and Morning Edition; now their schedules are a little more relaxed, full of adventure and giving back to their community. The Clines enjoy trying new experiences, like taking art, cooking and ice skating classes. They love to travel the world and are also sailors active in The Great Lakes Cruising Club. Dan and Linda enjoy using PBS Passport so they can stay caught up on all their favorite shows. Being lovers of outdoor recreation, the Clines serve on the boards of outdoor centered non-profits in northern MI, including Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy, TART Trails and Grass River Natural Area. Linda says, “I know any time I engage with Public Media, it is going to leave me a better person than I was before I started. I will know something, I will have seen something, I will have heard something that I didn’t know before.” The Clines support the station as a whole but have also been supporters of specific programs, like Echoes and more recently the MI News Group Internship program (which pairs WCMU student journalists with community newspapers). “We have both made annual gifts to the station, but more importantly, we’ve left a gift through our estate, which we hope will be enough to provide some continued operational funding to the station in perpetuity,” says Dan. Linda adds, “I think it’s important to give enough money to public broadcasting to know that all the value I’ve received over the years will be there beyond my lifetime. And that’s important to me to know that I’m giving forward to people I haven’t met because other people did that for me.”

Welcome, Teresa Homsi! Join us in welcoming Teresa Homsi to WCMU! She joins us as a reporter June 1st. WCMU Public Radio was selected as one of 70 new host newsrooms this fall by Report for America, an initiative of The GroundTruth Project. This spring we had the opportunity to interview a slate of candidates to fill the role of our Report for America Corp Member. Teresa was a standout as a summer intern for us last summer reporting from the Huron Daily Tribune. In her new role, Teresa will be based in northern Michigan and will be covering environmental stories for WCMU. Report for America will cover half of Teresa’s salary over the next year, with the responsibility falling to WCMU to raise additional funds for the role from the communities we serve. This partnership allows for reporting growth for WCMU and paves a path of sustainability over time to maintain the reporting position. reportforamerica.org/

Originally produced by The Smithsonian in 2001, this series has been re-packaged by PRX with new narration from original producer Jacquie Gales Webb.
Every Monday night at 8 pm in our Discovery Block you’ll find an hour of special programming often dedicated to documentaries. June 6: Witness: Pride Month Remarkable stories of LGBT+ rights, told by the people who were there. We hear about the fight for trans rights in Indonesia, lesbian separatists in Washington DC, and an activist who stormed the office of a Côte d’Ivoire newspaper to protest their depiction of LGBT+ people.
June 13: True Colors: Sounds from the Heart Join us for a special that celebrates musicians from the LGBTQ community.
June 20: Juneteenth: Remembrance and Celebration Music from Black American composers highlights progress and the pain that has been held in the community at large. Using the commemoration of the emancipation of all those who had been enslaved in United States as a starting point, the special will face our country’s racist past and present a tapestry of sounds, somber to ecstatic.
June 27: Nixon at War: How Vietnam Led to Watergate June marks the 50th anniversary of the Watergate break-in. Writer, historian, and Peabody Award-winning Studio 360 host Kurt Andersen tracks the story of Richard Nixon’s spectacular fall back upstream, to a different, and much earlier, source -- the War in Vietnam. A one-hour distillation of the recent and acclaimed seven-part podcast on the same subject, that Nixon biographer Evan Thomas called “the smartest and clearest (and most entertaining) explanation of this tangled mess that I have ever heard.”
