For Our Members ...

There’s so much to watch, listen and participate in this month! Take a look back at Boblo Boats from Detroit, NOVA: Back to the Moon, The Threads Fashion Show at CMU and a fascinating show from NATURE all about woodpeckers. Listen to “From the Ground Up” a new series of audio shorts all about plants hosted by Judy Wagley. And join us this summer as we promote reading at libraries including Traverse City, Clare, Mt. Pleasant with Xavier Riddle and Molly of Denali. If you’d like your library to participate – have them call Renee Mahon at WCMU. All of this and so much more come your way largely because of your support – thank you!

This month we welcome six CMU interns who will serve as reporters paired with newspapers across our coverage area. They’ll be reporting from Alpena, Traverse City, Cadillac, Bad Axe, Midland and Big Rapids.

We’ll also be hosting Grandparents U at CMU – this is a day where we talk with students about the value of asking good questions, and then they put those skills to work by interviewing their grandparents.

As we count down to the end of the fiscal year on June 30th – you’ll see and hear messages as we rally support from others. We’ll be working towards raising $301,739!

On Our Cover

Boblo Boats: A Detroit Ferry Tale

For over 85 years, steamship Ste. Claire transported generations of Detroiters to Boblo Island, one of America’s earliest amusement parks. Boblo Boats explores the whitewashed history of amusement parks and one crew’s crusade to bring back the memories. Narrated by Motown Legend Martha Reeves.

“Long before I became an underwriter of WCMU Public Radio, I was a teenage listener of programs you couldn’t find anywhere else on the dial. I view my relationship with WCMU as a collaboration to help ensure alternative content remains available for those looking for non-mainstream media and entertainment.”

Here & Now reflects the fluid world of news as it’s happening in the middle of the day, with timely, smart and in-depth news, interviews and conversation.

Co-hosted by award-winning journalists Robin Young, Scott Tong and Deepa Fernandes, the show’s daily lineup includes interviews with NPR reporters, as well as leading newsmakers, innovators and artists from across the U.S. and around the globe.

Weekdays from 1 to 3 p.m.

Judy Wagley provides your Michigan news middays from WCMU.

Ease into your Weekend Mornings with music and news!

Saturday and Sunday 6 to 8 a.m. Echoes is a musical soundscape hosted by John Diliberto. Echoes is a sound that is cross-cultural and trans-millennial, merging cultures and forms, technology and tradition, the ancient past and the possible future. Diliberto provides interviews with the artists making the music and captures recordings for the Living Room Concert series.

Weekend Edition Saturday wraps up the week’s news and offers a mix of analysis and features on a wide range of topics, including arts, sports, entertainment, and human interest stories. Your host is NPR’s Peabody Award-winning Scott Simon. Simon brings a humorous, sophisticated and often moving perspective to each show. He is as comfortable having a conversation with a major world leader as he is talking with a Hollywood celebrity or the guy next door.

Saturday and Sunday 8 - 10 a.m.

Hosted by Ayesha Rascoe, Weekend Edition Sunday features interviews with newsmakers, artists, scientists, politicians, musicians, writers, theologians and historians. Every week listeners tune in to hear a unique blend of news, features and the regularly scheduled puzzle segment with Puzzlemaster Will Shortz, the crossword puzzle editor of The New York Times.

WCMU Classical

Stream through the WCMU app to your Bluetooth speaker or car stereo, and find all the ways to listen to WCMU Classical at radio.WCMU.org/HowTo.

Special Broadcast: Friday, June 2 at 10:40 a.m.

From the opening horn calls signaling unstoppable fate to the delirious ending full of cymbal crashes and orchestral fireworks, Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony serves, in the composer’s words, as a “faithful echo” of an intense emotional journey. Martucci’s Nocturne employs gentle, beautiful melodies to portray nighttime calm, and Dohnányi’s set of variations humorously transforms a familiar childhood melody through a variety of musical styles. Join us for the Detroit Symphony Orchestra live under the direction of maestro Jader Bignamini.
