The holidays are a time we gather together with our families and friends to celebrate and recount the year. I was thinking about the past holidays I spent with my grandparents as some of the best times I ever had. We’d sit around after a big meal, looking at old pictures and laughing at stories we’d heard many times. Stories connect us to each other, not just as families and friends but also as communities. Whether it’s inspiring, funny or heartbreaking they’re always thoughtprovoking. I cherish the time I had with my grandparents, there’s nothing quite like it.

When winter weather limits your time outdoors, you can count on us to keep you company with a variety of stories. You’ll find drama, science, music, nature, news and the arts just to name a few. We share stories that matter to you and connect us to each other and our communities. We’ve got a great lineup of holiday television and radio programs this month. You’ll find treasured holiday traditions, some cozy classics and one of my favorites - NPR’s The Big Tiny Desk Holiday Special.

We’ll wrap up 2022 with the Call The Midwife Holiday Special which begins at 9 pm on Sunday, December 25. You won’t want to miss a moment!

So, gather your family, friends or neighbors, share some stories and enjoy all we have to offer. Raise a glass of cider or eggnog to usher in the New Year!

From our family to yours, thank you for your generous support and best wishes for a safe, healthy and prosperous 2023.

With appreciation,

first patient is a familiar face. Life in Poplar returns to normal after the tragic train crash, and everyone unites for a festive talent show.

Gene Tang was born and raised in North Dakota and has been living in Traverse City for more than 40 years. Gene had a long career as a pathologist and did his collegiate studies in North Dakota and Montreal, Canada. He is also an army veteran.

Gene has three daughters, one son and three grandchildren. His parents immigrated from Denmark and Gene has been lucky enough to visit relatives there throughout his life. Aside from traveling, Gene has had many hobbies over the years including skiing, boating and playing the euphonium in the Northern Michigan Brass Band.

A lover of good culinary dishes, Gene supports Lobdell’s: A Teaching Restaurant associated with Northwestern Michigan College. Not only does Gene support many organizations financially, he is also quick to lend a hand to a friend or neighbor in need, and has a knack for making others feel good.

Gene enjoys Masterpiece, science programs and documentaries on PBS, but there is no denying his passion and love of the musical arts. You can find him listening to classics by Beethoven or Dvorak as well as a mix of early jazz and tunes from the big band era.

Gene first began giving to Public Media to support great kids programing, like Sesame Street. He continues to give because of his passion for music and recognition that WCMU is a home for the arts. Gene says, “WCMU FM plays band and wind music I haven’t found much on other classical stations, and it feels as if they are playing just for me.”

A mother tracks down the first person ever diagnosed with autism, now an elderly man in rural Mississippi, to learn if his life story holds promise for her own autistic son. Her journey exposes a startling record of cruelty and kindness alike, framed by forces like race, money and privilege – but leads to hope that more of us are learning to have the backs of those who are “different.” Tuesday, Dec. 13, 9 p.m.

Coquito (Coconut Eggnog)

INGREDIENTS

1¼ cups water

3 cinnamon sticks

8 large egg yolks

1 (13½-oz.) can coconut milk

1 (14-oz.) can condensed milk

PREPARATION

1 (15-oz.) can cream of coconut (preferably Coco Lopez)

½ tsp. vanilla extract

Pinch of salt

½ tsp. lime zest

1 quart white rum, or to taste

In a small saucepan, combine the water and cinnamon sticks. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce the heat and simmer while you prepare the remaining ingredients.

Pour egg yolks into a blender and blend on high speed for 3 minutes, or until they thicken into a cream. Add coconut milk and blend for 1 minute, then add condensed milk and cream of coconut and blend for 3 minutes, or until thickened.

Remove cinnamon sticks from the water and reserve. Slowly stir the water into the egg yolk mixture. Add vanilla, salt, and lime zest and pulse to incorporate. Pour the contents into a pitcher or a punch bowl.

Pour in the rum, add the reserved cinnamon sticks, and stir to mix.
