SPECTACULAR

For Our Members ...

Last year I had a chance to go travel to Europe for a few weeks. As I was talking to a former boss of mine about the trip, he suggested three things: Rick Steves, Rick Steves, and Rick Steves. If I wanted to know where to go, what to do, and what to eat, watch Rick Steves. I may have then gone and watched many episodes of his show immediately after that conversation. I knew where I was going but it was helpful to have a guide on my TV telling me some of the things off the beaten path or some festivals that I would have missed on my own. WCMU has our local shows just like Rick Steves. Under The Radar and our very own Destination Michigan program show us places and individuals doing some amazing things. I got tips from both shows on places to eat when travelling in our state. It is now a part of every trip I take. My List: #1 –where am I staying and #2 – where am I eating.

Our August schedule does have quite a few episodes of Under The Radar, Destination Michigan, and yes, Rick Steves. If travel isn’t possible in August for you, we have many great shows to watch. Grantchester and Ridley are all new shows. There also is a lot of focus

on music programs this month including a new concert from Billy Strings. Billy was born in Lansing and has had an amazing career including Grammy wins and Americana Music Award Artist Of The Year. Do check him out.

Thank you for being a loyal viewer to WCMU. We do appreciate your support, and because of that, we are able to bring you quality programs month after month. Now it’s time for me to sit back, watch some TV, and figure out where the best burger is in Ludington.

Thanks,

Billy Strings at the Ryman Auditorium

WCMU Reporter Rick Brewer has a passion for storytelling.

“The stories that fly under the radar attract me the most in my reporting,” he says. “There is nothing more satisfying than bringing a story to light for the first time, and interviewing people who’ve never spoken with a reporter.”

Rick loves talking with people from a wide range of backgrounds and expertise. “I feel lucky when people allow me to speak with them and explore their world,” he says.

Member support is the foundation for everything Rick does. “This support allows me to explore my curiosity, hold people accountable and explore places across central and northern Michigan.”

You can hear Rick’s reporting every day on WCMU.

22 WCMU Public Radio

Intriguing conversations. Essential Context. News that matters.

Every day, WCMU and NPR bring you essential news from across Michigan, and around the globe. We strive to bring you the full story – who, what, where, and when – and then we take a deep dive into the why. It’s an approach that creates stronger communities, and leaves you better informed about the world around you.

It’s radio that matters, every day on WCMU. Listen for the latest news, every hour, on the hour.

Here & Now announces environmental reporting partnership

A new partnership between climate solutions media nonprofit Grist and Here & Now will expand the national show’s environmental coverage. In weekly installments, Grist’s award-winning reporters will join hosts Deepa Fernandes, Scott Tong and Robin Young to help Here & Now listeners understand the far-reaching impacts of rising global temperatures. This collaborative venture has already sparked memorable conversations about western water brokers, green steel in the Rust Belt and foreign aid for climate change in segments that aired this spring.
