The Sanford Voices Project Premieres Friday, September 24 at 7 p.m.

During Spring of 2020, the village of Sanford, Michigan was directly impacted by catastrophic flooding caused by two mid Michigan dam failures. In partnership with CMU’s College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, The Sanford Voices Project documents the personal histories of those affected by the disaster, and how they are recovering from it. When disaster struck this village, the community’s strength and resilience demonstrated that Sanford is Strong.

Attend an in-person screening prior to the premiere at Central Michigan University on Thursday, September 16. Details at WCMU.org/sanford

Discover how rivers play a huge role in the Great Lakes State.

In this NEW episode, Stefanie Mills introduces us to some of Michigan’s top river experts to take a closer look on how rivers impact and shape our lives. Plus, host Matthew Ozanich (pictured here) heads down to Lansing to paddle the waters of the Grand River. In Northern Michigan, we’ll meet a dedicated group of guardians on a mission to protect sturgeon in the river. We’ll also visit Torch River and meet acclaimed photographer Steve Jessmore, whose long hours spent on the water have produced incredible wildlife images.

American Veteran This multiplatform project examines the full range of experiences that the men and women of our armed services have lived through in the past and today. The series seeks to understand the powerful cultural identity that veterans from all five branches of the service share, the oftentransformative nature of their time in uniform, and their commitment to an ideal of service that often goes beyond their active duty. American Veteran begins with a 10-part YouTube digital series beginning Sept. 7, followed by a nine-part podcast starting on Oct. 19, and a fourpart PBS broadcast, Tuesdays Oct. 26 through Nov. 16. Plus, join WCMU for a community conversation and film screening around American Veteran — details at WCMU.org.

“Becoming a sponsor of WCMU has been one of the most satisfying business decisions I have ever made. In addition to getting our message out a very broad audience, we are investing in great programming and solid journalism. My staff and I regularly experience what we call “parking lot moments”, when passers-by hear our business name on WCMU as they are driving by and turn directly into our parking lot.” - Crooked Tree Breadworks

Discovery Block — An Hour of Special Programming Mondays at 8 p.m. on WCMU Public Radio September 6: The Uncertain Hour from Marketplace When Jerry Vasquez realized he was making less than minimum wage after buying a franchise janitorial business with a company called Jan-Pro, he joined fellow franchisees to sue the company. We’ll dive in and explore the origins of the federal minimum wage, why lawmakers wrote the law as broadly as they did, whom it applied to, and whom it excludes.

September 13: Amazon: The Prime Effect (Episode 3) Like everything with Amazon, its marketplace is big. Small businesses like Steve Chou’s Bumblebee Linens can soar. But is the marketplace also destroying main street brick and mortar stores? In the third episode of our Amazon series, a look at the peaks and pits of Amazon’s marketplace for retail.

September 20: Fading Beacon: Why America is Losing International Students This hour explores a sea change in the number of foreign students attending U.S. colleges. The pandemic, visa restrictions, rising tuition, and a perception of safety issues in America have driven new international student enrollment down by a jaw-dropping 72 percent. We team up with Karin Fischer of the Chronicle of Higher Education to trace America’s rise as a global beacon for higher education and examine what’s lost as that changes. September 27: Who Wants To Be A Teacher? Schools around the country are struggling to find enough teachers. Many quit after a short time on the job, creating a constant struggle to replace them. Each year, there are close to 300,000 first-year teachers in the nation’s classrooms. At the same time, enrollment in teacher training programs at colleges and universities is plummeting. We’ll look at the implications of these changes, both for the children and for the teaching force.

While the devastating images of the 9/11 attacks are seared into our national collective memory, most of the events that led up to that day took place out of public view. As the 20th Anniversary of this tragic moment in American history approaches, Blindspot: The Road to 9/11 brings to light the decade-long “shadow struggle” that preceded the attacks. Hosted by WNYC reporter Jim O’Grady, this 2-hour radio special draws on interviews with a range of sources — including CIA agents, security experts, and people who knew the terrorists personally. Thursday, September 9 from 7 to 9 p.m.; Saturday, September 11 from 3 to 5 p.m.
